JAMES ROWBERRY
I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for this afternoon’s game.
We start another busy period where we once again play 3 fixtures in the space of a week, culminating in our fixture at home to Colchester next Friday night. I was delighted after the game away at Swindon last Saturday and was so proud of the team as they gave their all and came away with 3 points against a good Swindon side. The boys showed some fantastic characteristics that really pleased me, mixing some moments of real quality, driven from the base of hard work, desire and commitment. Once again, a massive thank you to all of the fans that sold out our away allocation and really showed the boys fantastic support and we were delighted to send you back home along the M4 happy. Today will prove to be another competitive game, Crawley are a very solid and difficult team to beat, performing consistently at home and away and it’ll take a strong collective performance for us to get a positive result. On that note, I’d like to welcome John Yems, the technical staff, the directors, players and fans from Crawley Town and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade. Our message of taking each game as it comes can’t be epitomised more than this week. Of course, we enjoyed the feeling of the win on Saturday, but our focus immediately shifted to today’s game and our preparation has been completely focused on Crawley. Even with the quick turnaround with our fixture on Monday at Sutton, it’s vital we don’t look past today until the game is over. I’m really hoping we can have a bumper crowd today at Rodney Parade with a fantastic atmosphere to match. I can’t reiterate enough how important you will be in spurring us on in matches in the run-in to the end of this season and you can really be the difference in games when the boys need a boost. I firmly believe that clubs in this league dislike coming to Rodney Parade and that’s in part down to just how intimidating you can make it when you’re loud and proud. Get behind the boys and enjoy the game. James O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 3

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC WITH CHRIS SHINGLER
Good Friday football is always a special Easter treat, as is the thumbing though old football programmes;so, we can combine the two pleasures today with a look back at Crawley’s visit to Newport just over 19 years ago on April 12th, 2003, for a Dr Martens Premier League clash at our old stomping ground,Spytty Park…
T
he famous ‘B Block Amber Army’ are featured on the cover, although this photo was in fact taken by then club photographer, the late Colin Jerimiah at an FA Cup clash at Woking the previous season when our fans had parked themselves in the big, behind-the-goal, impressive stand. ‘The Exile’ as the programme was known back then would have cost our loyal fans £1.50 and in return, they had a good value 36-page issue for their lolly. Following a note from Club President David Hando, regarding the 200 Club, the society set up to raise funds for the then much needed social club Bar Amber, we have the Peter Nicholas column. The Newport-born former Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Chelsea, Aberdeen, Luton town, Watford and Wales man was currently parked in the hot seat of his home-town club and he was happy that last time out we had beaten Stafford Rangers at Spytty with a solitary Matt Rose goal. Nico also reported that striker Mark Dickenson had been given the go ahead to resume full-time training and he was hopeful that the ex-Cwmbran Town man would be available for the last few games of the season. However, it seems that Stafford win came at a cost with Jason Perry (who may well be here today in his role as a BBC Radio Wales summariser),Steve Benton and Andrew Thomas all picking up injuries. Indeed, none of the trio would take part in the day’s proceedings. A few pages on and we find ‘Club News’in which a plethora of results of various draws were announced, 4 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E
andtypically, as per, I’m not mentioned anywhere in the round up of Golden Gamble, Subscription Draw, Letterbox, Lifeline and Lucky Programme winners,! Bah! There is even the result of the players’ Grand National sweep in which the popular Garry Shephard had walked away with the spoils that Matt Rose apparently had been in charge of. The‘Player Spotlight’in this issue was on goalkeeper Gareth Wesson, a recent emergency signing from Welsh League Newport YMCA,due to an injury to Pat “The Cat” Mountain, who had been crocked in a recent home match with Cambridge City. Gareth was grateful to the YM’s manager Mark Coldrick (a big County supporter) who did not prevent him from answering our SOS for him to
turn out at Halesowen, a match we won 2-1. However, we do learn that Gareth had in fact played for us three years earlier too, in a 2000 3-0 win in a Gwent Senior Cup tie with Tredegar Town. Newport-born Gareth had also experienced a twoyear YTS spell at Plymouth Argyle but had returned to Wales six months early due to homesickness. He also played his part in our recent FAW Cup penalty shootout victory over Cardiff City, when the match itself had ended 0-0. Up next was ‘Side at Spytty’and we have two pages on Francis Vines’ reds and, to be honest, only Peter Fear, the ex-Wimbledon and Oxford United midfielder is a name I know and remember. Fear at the time was in fact Fulham’s Football in the Community Officer. Leading scorer for them was Nic McDonnell who had bagged 20 goals and Crawley lay one place in front of us in the table in 7th spot. In Spytty the Dog’s ‘Junior Page’ the loveable old mutt takes a look at some of the players who had left the club during the season. Some well-known names are featured too with the likes of Leon Jeanne (what a talent he had), Scott Walker, David D’Auria, Darren Ryan, Darren Robison, Stuart James and Steve Cowe, as well as the somewhat less r e m e m b e r e d Ju l i e n Luntala and Tim Hart. For the record, Luntala was a Belgium-born player who made three Exiles appearances and netted once verses Hinckley. The last Spytty had heard of him was that he’d had a trial Kidderminster Harries. Hart was a backup goalkeeper who had made two starts and was now No.1 at Evesham United. This match ended in an exciting 3-3 draw. Kristian Diamond, James Fox and Neil Davis got our goals but given this was a dead rubber fixture that these pre-play off days often brought after Christmas only 583 could feel bothered enough to find their way to the stadium. Count y eventually
finished in 10th place with 56 points from the 42 matches played, with Crawley a little higher in 7th spot with 64 points. Tamworth won the division with 88 smackers on the board. County did have an FAW Cup final to look forward to, however, Wrexham who had just won promotion from League two to League one certainly celebrated in style at our expense by drubbing us 6-1 at The Racecourse. Teams: County: Gareth Wesson, Richard French (Raith Plant), Chris Collins, Billy Clarke, Michael Fowler, Jeff Eckhardt, Matt Rose, Kristian Diamond, John Phillips (JamesFox), Garry Shephard (Neil Davis), Nathan Davies. Subs not used:Lloyd Stone, Allen Stevenson. Crawley (PrintedXI): Andy Little, Stewart Holmes, Ian Payne, Ben Judge, Marc Pullen, Peter Fear, Mo Harkin, Ernie Cooksey, Nic McDonnell, Warren Bagnall, Nigel Brake. Subs:Danny Hockton, Neil LeBihan, Kevin Hemsley, Ellis Cooper, John Timlin.

BOARDROOM A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Crawley Town for this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. We have two local teams joining us today. A warm welcome to Cwmbran Celtic AFC U7s and Bargoed YMCA. Cwmbran Celtic AFC U7s are enjoying their first season in the Torfaen Junior League. Their coaches have been with them since they were 4 years old, and they are all excited to be returning to Rodney Parade for their first visit since March 2020. Bargoed YMCA are a family club committed to making football an enjoyable experience for all. Their latest group of little superstars are coached to understand the importance of learning key skills that will help them in school, at home and generally in life - not just about scoring goals and saving shots. Our charity of the day is our very good friends at Kidscape who provide practical support, training, and advice to challenge bullying and protect young lives. They have a vision that is for all children to grow up in supportive communities safe from bullying and harm. The club has worked in partnership with Kidscape for a number of years and our Head of Safeguarding Kelly Anderson has been a champion of the charity for some time. Thanks to the Amber Army who travelled to Swindon last week. The support was magnificent and clearly helped the players gain the win. The club are aware there were a number of issues encountered and we have shared these with Swindon. On this note supporters would have witnessed the behaviour of a minority of Exeter fans at our game. We have again
6 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E
been in dialogue with Exeter along with the Police given some of the issues outside the stadium. We would encourage supporters to report any challenges they encounter home or away as we strive to create a safe and welcoming environment. Today, at half time, we will have a presentation of a cheque for £2k in support of Ukraine. The money has been generously donated by fans from the bucket collection at the Exeter game along with a donation from the club and trust. Our thanks to Darren Bourne, Korky Young, Andrew Floyd and the rest of the lads that collected the monies. I recently wrote about the work James Ward is doing in the Czech Republic to help Ukraine refugees who have fled the conflict. Supporters would have seen our promotional game against Colchester on Friday 22nd of April. This is a thank you from the club for all the support given throughout the season and we hope to “Pack the Parade” to support James and the team. We will soon be communicating the plans for our end of season awards. Please look out for these on all our social media channels. Today we say farewell to our media assistant Sydney Davis who is leaving us to go off travelling around Europe before she starts University later on this year. Our thanks to Sydney for all her hard work and best of luck for the future. Good luck to the lads this afternoon and thank you for the continued support. Happy Easter everyone. Gavin

ur scholars recently attended the LAPS careers event that was held in conjunction with the LFE. The boys had the opportunity to attend Manchester United’s World famous Old Trafford stadium, there they had the opportunity to speak with employers in and outside of the game and look at potential career opportunities for when they transition from the Academy. A great event that gave a real insight into the endless opportunities and options available to the boys. The team then travelled straight from the event in Manchester to Finch Farm training ground where they faced Everton scholars in a friendly game. What an experience it was for the young exiles who went on to put in a performance they’ll never forget, coming out on top 4-3 on the evening. The Exiles goals were scored by Lewys Twamley 3 Tom Stokes 1 Academy Manager Damien Broad ‘We were very pleased with how the lads conducted themselves and represented the club throughout the day, their engagement at the event in Manchester will no doubt put them in good stead with whatever they choose to do next in life. There was something for everyone and it certainly is something we will continue to do for our young players. It is great to attend these kind of events as it only assists with the planning and preparation that needs to go into the next steps of their life, whether they have a career in the game or not.’ ‘The game was just the cherry on the cake, we decided to make a full day of it as playing against Premier league opposition at their own training facility is not something the lads experience every week. It was a hardworking, disciplined and mature performance, the players proved they can do it, it’s now important they are more consistent and take this approach towards every game they play. It was not only just a fantastic result, but a great day of learning for all those in attendance.’

KIDSCAPE
W
e are delighted to welcome our official charity partners Kidscape for their charity awareness match against Crawley, where you can meet the team in our family marquee prior to the game and young people can participate in some fun activities. ‘Tinty and the Bucket Hats’ will also be performing their songs that they have recorded to raise funds for the charity. Kidscape gives hope and help to thousands of children and families each year. They provide practical support, training, and advice to challenge bullying and protect young lives. It’s a sad truth that at least one child in every classroom experience bullying every single day. Bullying can follow children home on their phones and devices. It can affect self-esteem, and it can make going to school a misery. Kidscape ZAP workshops teach a range of practical tools (the ‘ZAP tools’) for handling a
bullying situation. The workshops are delivered both in the community and through schools. They significantly empower and support children – with 92% of children saying they now feel more able to handle a bullying situation. Kidscape also runs a Parent Advice Line, which offers friendly, impartial, non-judgemental information, advice and support to parents, carers, family members or professionals who are concerned about a child - either because they are being bullied, or because they may be involved in bullying others. With a range of training – from safeguarding to online safety – Kidscape supports parents, carers, and schools to create communities safe from bullying and harm. You can find out more about Kidscape on their website, or sign up to their newsletter for practical tips and advice, and opportunities to get involved!
If you wish to donate to Kidscape, you can by texting NEWPORT to 70560 to donate £5. Texts will cost the donation amount plus one standard network rate message, and you’ll be opting into hearing more from Kidscape. If you would like to donate but don’t wish to hear more then, please text NEWPORTNOINFO instead.

COUNTY IN THE COMMUNITY Easter Fit & Fed – in partnership with BBC Children in Need
Easter Half Term Fit & Fed has proven extremely popular in the community of Alway since CitC received funding from BBC CiN back in 2021, confirmed for 3 years. This half term we’ve delivered three days of Fit & Fed at Alway Centre providing nutritious lunches, positive environments, and many different sports. Through these sessions young people are encouraged to make more positive choices in their everyday life, while also tackling the physical inactivity they may face during the half term periods. This week we have provided 7 hours of physical activity over 150 nutritious meals and over 300 snacks to 85 young people. The summer break is only set to be busier; we cannot wait to see you again!

S' TRUST?
The Newport County AFC Supporters' Trust is one of more than 140 Supporters' Trusts that exist under the umbrella of Supporters' Direct, a national body that provides assistance to supporters "who wish to play a responsible part in the life of the football club they support". The Trust was originally formed in 2001 and took a controlling stake in the football club in October 2015 following a community share issue which saw County supporters raise a magnificent £236,000 in just a month. Since then, Newport County AFC has been a supporter-owned, community-based club. The primary purpose of the Trust is to provide funding to the club. Our aim is to donate at least £100,000 a season to the club. As well as being owners of an EFL club, Trust members receive a range of benefits depending on their membership tier. All members have guaranteed priority tickets for cup matches. More details about the Trust can be found on our website: www.ncafctrust.org

IN THE BEGINNING …
Recent research suggests that the club may have played friendly matches before their officially recognised formation date of 1896. Minutes from a Sussex County FA meeting of that year confirm that Crawley had been given permission to change their colours, stating: ’A discussion arose as to the club colours, the Secretary pointing out that in league contests the club must play in distinctive colours and ultimately the old navy blue shirts were thrown over in favour of scarlet.’ ‘The Surrey Mirror’ suggests that a Crawley club may even have been playing – presumably in navy! - as early as 1890, with its 29 November edition from that year reporting ‘the first match played by Crawley since its formation came on Saturday, ending in a win for the home team (against Lingfield) by four goals to two.’ However, 1896 was certainly the year that our visitors were accepted as founder members of the West Sussex League, and they remained at district level until stepping up into the Sussex County League at the end of World War Two.
HIGHLIGHTS
The current campaign is Town’s 11th as a Football League outfit following their Conference championship success under recently appointed Stevenage boss Steve Evans in 2010-11. That title, with a Conference record points total of 105, was the icing on the cake for this afternoon’s visitors, who also reached Round 5 of the FA Cup, losing 1-0 to nickname namesakes Manchester United at Old Trafford. The West Sussex Red Devils, backed by considerable investment, were clearly on a roll and completed their first fourth tier season in third place, securing League One football, while again reaching the last 16 of the FA Cup. Reds remained in League One for three seasons, with a best ever position of 10th in 2012-13, just six points off the play-offs. Future County loan striker and current Port Vale hot shot Jamie
•A dministration! Reds suffered this fate in the late 1990s and again in 2006, when players and staff were made to take a 50% pay cut and the entire squad was put up for sale. Supporters started a ‘Red Card’ campaign to remove the club chairman and formed a Supporters’ Trust. Reports revealed that the club was around £1.4million in debt with nearly £400,000 due to HMRC. The financial uncertainty rumbled on for around four years, with a 2010 High Court appearance, before the arrival of majority shareholders Bruce Winfield and Susan Carter attracted overseas investment and signalled an exciting new era for the club. • The 1969-70 season. Hopes were high at the start of the campaign following Red Devils’ promotion from the Southern League First Division in fourth place behind Brentwood Town, Bath City and Gloucester City the preevious campaign. Unfortunately, only Burton Albion finished below Crawley in their debut Southern League Premier Division season and they remained in the league’s second tier until their promotion as runners-up in 1983-84.
RED DEVILS’ TODAY
Takeover complete All talk at the People’s Pension Stadium in the past week has been on the takeover of Crawley Town by American investment group WAGMI United LLC, who have purchased controlling shares. The company specialise in cryptocurrency and co-founder Preston Johnson is clearly excited about the potential in the new venture, stating: ‘Crawley Town Football Club is a club with more than 125 years of rich history that we revere and respect. However, a conventional approach to ownership hasnot worked and the club is losing hundreds of thousands of pounds while its fans suffer through year after year of uninspiring results on the pitch. We are going to shake up the status quo, try out some new ideas, and build a worldwide community of fans new and old that can be excited to cheer on the Red Devils together - stretching from West Sussex to anywhere in the world with an internet connection.’ Johnson and fellow co-founder Eben Smith will assume roles as club directors and have also pledged to allow fans to decide if they continue in those roles, should they fail to achieve promotion to League One by the end of their second season - a target which they say is ‘about 50/50’.Daryl Morey, president of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, businessman Gary Vaynerchuk and TikTok personality Bryce Hall are all part of the group. First team manager John Yems, 62,is enthusiastic about the takeover: ‘This is an exciting time for the club.Let’s hope that we can continue the good progress we have made and take the club forward.’
MANAGER’S VIEW
John Yems talking to the pressafter last weekend’s victory over Barrow, praisedthe character his squad have shown in recent weeks, despite injury problems. ‘Once again, we nick a 1-0 and on the balance of play, we deserved it.It shows you the heart, the desire and the drive from whoever we play. Quality sometimes goes out the window but give me ten players like George Francomb and Hessy (Jake Hessenthaler) and Payney (Jack Payne) and you won’t be far off
winning things. Then you have creative players like Kwesi (Appiah), Nico (Tom Nichols), and Nadders (Ashley Nadesan) -with his pace you are always going to be a threat - but it is getting that balance and hopefully we might be able to play everybody again which makes my job double hard then.it wasnot bad for a team who is supposed to be unfit and give games away and all the old monsters that come back to haunt you!’
FANS’ VIEWS
Many posters on ‘CTFCFansForum’ are debating the merits of the recent club takeover, though there is some chat around today’s Good Friday clash. Here is a quick look, with thanks to those named. ‘We now only have 5 seats available for Friday’s game at Newport County.’ As of Sunday afternoon, ‘Alain’ was hoping to fill all 53 seats on Crawley’s supporters’ coach to RP. ‘If you had offered me 1-1 against a team I would be very surprised to not see in the top seven at the end of the season I definitely would have taken that.’ ‘steve98’ reflecting on the 1-1 draw in West Sussex five months ago. ‘Newport probably among the top 4-5 teams in the division given how they stroke the ball around.’ ‘steve’ (without the 98) complimentary about County’s passing style. ‘They do have good players when they attack.’ ‘philb’ agrees. ‘Salford show that if an owner puts in the money any size team can survive in League Two and I would expect that could continue up the leagues, but you will have to overpay for players (straight choice, Sunderland v Crawley). That is hardly fitting into the profile of shaking up how things are done. We need fans through the gate.’ ‘jim’ with some thoughts on the takeover.

He was assistant to Exeter manager Paul Tisdale for 18 months from 2009 and then spent six years with Bournemouth. He played an important part in their rise from League One to the Premier League in his role as Football Operations Manager under Eddie Howe, with responsibility for coaching and recruitment. John has also worked at Fulham, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Torquay and Gillingham and was scouting for various clubs including Newcastle United when he took the reins at the People’s Pension Stadium. He is assisted by Lewis Young, who was promoted in February when Lee Bradbury left to manage National League side Eastleigh. Lewis’s 13-year playing career included more than 200 EFL games for Town.
