JAMES ROWBERRY

I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for tonight’s game.

We are into our final 3 games of the season and our penultimate game at Rodney Parade for the 2021-2022 season. I was pleased with large aspects of our performance away at Sutton on Monday however it was disappointing to come away from Gander Green Lane with no points to show for it, especially when I think it is a fair assumption that we had the better of the game on the day. Small margins can count for a lot in football and ultimately, we came up a little short. However, as always, we have dusted ourselves down from any disappointment and are ready to go again this evening. As always, the away support was fantastic and was really appreciated by the players and staff. This evening will prove to be another competitive game, Colchester have been in a real battle to stay in the division and they certainly won’t be resting on their laurels. They’ll be coming here looking to get a positive result and we’ll have to perform well in order to get a good result for ourselves. On that note, I’d like to welcome Wayne Brown, the technical staff, the directors, players and fans from Colchester United and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade. Our last few results have been disappointing, but I must stress that, as always, we must not dwell on them and we have certainly spent this week solely preparing for tonight’s game. I know at this point of the season it can be easy to look elsewhere at other results however we can only control our own performances and that is what our entire focus is on. We are heading into our final few games looking to perform the best that we can in each game. Whatever happens from here on in will happen but we will focus on controlling what we can control. Hopefully you can pack out Rodney Parade tonight and really give your support to the boys. Our evening games this season have been full of atmosphere and passion and I hope that is the same again tonight so that the boys can feed off you and transmit that into their performance on the pitch. Get behind the boys and enjoy the game. James O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 3

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC WITH CHRIS SHINGLER

We extend a warm Friday night welcome to Rodney Parade to our visitors Colchester United and once again raid the cobweb-strewn attic, wistfully delving into the pages of an old programme from a previous U’s trip to Newport…

T

he issue we dig out is from Saturday 12th October 1968; the day the Mexico Olympic games opened. This programme would have cost the Sixties fan 9d in old money, roughly equating to 65p today. It opens on page two with ‘Editorial’ written by Cliff Hiscott and looked back at recent results. These included an exciting 5-1 win at Bradford Park Avenue (greedy Tony Buck got all five!), a home 3-4 defeat to Aldershot, a 1-1 drawat Brentford and a 0-1 defeat at Darlington. Cliff is full of praise for the Shots in particular, noting the “Effective brand of football they play.” To balance things out, he also reports that the Aldershot chairman had been “Full of praise for our lads” citing County had pressed them “More than any other team this season.” Mr. H reckons today will be a hard encounter against a team that were relegated from Division 3 the previous season and picks out ex Fulham goalkeeper, the Gibraltar-born Tony Macedo, former West Ham player Dave Bickles, a former English youth international centre-half, and ex Spurs forward Terry Dyson, who boasted FA Cup and league championship medals in his repertoire, as the men to watch from the Essex club. The page three ‘Pen Pics’afford us more detail on the men in the visiting changing room and another name I can recall is Roger Joslyn, who went onto serve Aldershot, Watford and Reading 4 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E

in a prosperous football league career. After the team line ups hog the issue’s c e n t r a l b e r t h , w e come to a page advertising forthcoming home fixtures and our next three opponents at Somerton Park were Abergavenny Thursdays and Merthyr Town in the Welsh League, with York City being the meat in the taffy sandwich, who of course we played in Division 4. Also on the same page are all the details your County “statto” would need covering our last four outings, both first team and r e s e r ve s . We’ve already mentioned the Aldershot, Brentford and Darlington results, but for the record our second XI had also lost 1-2 at home to Ton Pentre. Gerald King netted our goal from the spot. Details are also given of the

last time the Ironsides and The U’s clashed in the1965/66 season. We lost at Layer Road 2-3, but goals from Len Hill and Kenny Morgans gave us a 2-1 home win in the return fixture. Fred Beare is along next with ‘Supporters’ Club Notes’ and opens by welcoming Dutch Newport County fan Chris Unekenof Eindhoven, who was watching us in action for the first time that day. Chris apparently wasa fully paid-up Supporters’ Club member to boot, or even clog! News also, that a County junior supporters team had beaten their Aldershot counterparts 10-1 in a match before the main event recently. Our team was Peter Woodford, John Bowden, Paul Kelly, Edwin Cox, Phillip Burgess, Denis Bates, Ian Blackborrow, Paul Donovan, Phillip Price, Jack Dalimore and Phillip Bunce. How many of these names are familiar to County fans here today? A few I bet?! The back page is where we pore over the up-to-date league table and we find ourselves occupying 15th spot after most teams had played 12 matches. We had 11 points on the board while Colchester, some three places above us had a baker’s dozen of 13. For some reason, Exeter and bottom club Bradford Park Avenue had played 13 times. Darlington were unbeaten at the time and had 20 points racked up and the crowds were responding too, with 8,885 turning up at Feethamsto witness their narrow win over us. Our Cromwell Road social club had Saturday night entertainment in the shape of a “Grand Hawaiian Night” with prizes for the best dressed male and female, bingo at 8.15, a prize draw plus music from “The Somertones” the resident band; heck, who needs Ant and Dec, eh?! There was also a quick piece that pin badges from various clubs including Sunderland, Coventry City, Leeds United, Birmingham City, Derby County, Bristol Rovers,

Rotherham and Aldershot were available. Graham Jarvis was the man at the kiosk to see. So that was your match day programme bonanza to cover this 1-0 homewin, and John McLellandscored the winner, much to the delight of the vast majority of the 3,262 crowd. McLelland, who scored 10 goals for us in 40 league and cup matches retired at the end of this season. The Bradford-born centre-forward had previously served Manchester City, Lincoln City, Queens Park Rangers, and Portsmouth beforejoining us. Sadly, our season turned into an all-toofamiliar re-election one; we ended with only Park Avenue and Grimsby Town below us, and York one place above us, who also had to canvass votes come June. Colchester finished in 6th spot in a league won by Doncaster Rovers. Halifax Town, Rochdale and Bradford City won promotion with early season pacesetters Darlington missing out in 5th. Teams: County: Len Weare, David Williams, Mike McLaughlin, Tony Jones, Allen Wood, John Rowland, Harry Robinson, Len Hill, Tony Buck, Ken Wookey, John McLelland. Sub:Terry Cooper. Colchester United (Printed XI):Tony Macedo, Denis Mochan, Brian Hall, Roger Joslyn, Dave Bickles, Brian Wood, Owen Simpson, Brian Gibbs, Danny Light, Jim Oliver, Terry Dyson.

warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Colchester United for this evenings EFL League Two home fixture. We are pleased to welcome Melin Homes as our Team of the evening. Melin Homes are partners of County in the Community. County in the Community undertake fantastic work out and about in our community. They run a number of programmes around mental health and well-being, walking football and engage multiple schools throughout the region. Having a partnership with Melin Homes allows County in the Community to deliver such programmes and it is great to have them with us tonight. Enjoy the game! Tonight, we welcome back to Rodney Parade Sparkle at the Serennu Centre. The charity is celebrating their 10th anniversary, after opening in April 2011. Since then, it has provided vital care, treatment and activities for children and young people with disabilities and/or developmental difficulties, as well as support for the wider family. For more details, please see www.sparkleappeal.org. Staff from the charity will be in the marquee before the game and happy to answer any questions. Please do go along to the marquee and say hello and of course enjoy the entertainment provided as part of the pre-match build up. Supporters would have undoubtedly seen the communication advertising our end of season awards. As always there are multiple awards across all areas

of the club, once again representing our one club one county approach. The event will be held in the Bisley Suite following our game with Rochdale. Tickets to the event are free although get in early as they are limited given the capacity of the Bisley. This is the first awards event we have held for a number of years given Covid and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. On the subject of awards our congratulations from everyone at the club to Finn Azaz and Dom Telford who have been shortlisted for the EFL League 2 young player of the year and player of the year respectively. What a great achievement for both players to have been selected and fingers crossed they can both win the coveted titles. Whilst it is both Finn and Dom who are up for the awards, I am sure they would be the first to acknowledge the contribution of their fellow teammates and all the staff within the first team environment. Lastly, at half time the whole academy will undertake a lap of honour around Rodney Parade. It is great to see our academy being recognised in such a manner. Our thanks to Damien Broad (Academy Manager) and all the staff, players and the parents for making the Academy an environment to be proud of. Please show your appreciation! Good luck to the lads this evening and thank you for the continued support. Gavin

ACADEMYUPDATE T

With the season drawing to its conclusion, it’s a great time to look back and reflect on another busy but successful Academy season.

his season saw the club introduce our development squad, where the club highlighted and wanted to support the challenges an 18-year-old faces when leaving Academy football and having to go straight into a senior footballing environment. The club identified that in order to help our young players reach their potential we needed to ensure we supported the Academy talent and hold onto our top talents. This has certainly helped the young pros transition into senior football from Academy life and will no doubt have aided their development going forward in senior football. With the benefits being well highlighted the club and the manager have again supported it for the 22/23 season by offering contracts to three of our current Academy scholars. These will all be announced in due course and will be great additions to the talent who have already benefited from the experience gained from training and playing with the first team, having development games and going out on loan to nonleague clubs this season. The Academy has also expanded across all age groups with nearly 400 players representing the club under the Academy badge, within our Pre Academy, Shadow squad, Academy schoolboys/scholars and in our newly formed girls centre. Academy Schoolboys U9-U16: 105 players Academy Scholars U17-U19: 20 players Pre Academy U7-U8: 48 players Girls Centre U10,U12,U14,U16: 82 players Shadow squads U9-U16: 120 players Sports Science provision has improved through the Academy partnership with Carbon Fiit and club legend David Pipe working week in week out with our Academy players from U9 to U18. David has not only focused on the physical development of our players, but also taught them what sacrifice, dedication and

hard work it takes to make it to the top and stay there. The safeguarding, player care and education of our Academy players has also been aided by the appointment of Kelly Anderson who has been not only a great help to our players, in ensuring their safety and welfare but also that of our staff and parents across the whole Academy. Players at all ages have benefitted by Kelly’s experience and also through the workshops, guest speakers and club visits that have been arranged across the season to support their development off the pitch. This is vital for us as an Academy as we want to help all our young players be the best version of themselves, being good people and portraying themselves, their family and the club in a positive light in whatever they go on to do in life. Our training and playing performances have also improved greatly this year and this is no doubt down to the recruitment, retention and coaching of our staff who work with the players across every night of the week. Results across all age groups have given a good indication of the age groups developing further, with weekly performances against higher ranked and more established Academies being very pleasing. A big thanks must go to our Phase leads, medical team, sports scientists, analysts, scouts, heads of departments and age group coaches who all do a fantastic job in helping our players week in week out. Over 200 players and 30 members of staff will be in attendance from the Academy, for tonight’s game and I hope you are able to join in with celebrating their contribution to the club this season by giving them a clap or a wave as they pass by your seat on their lap of recognition around the pitch at Half time tonight. COUNTY IN THE Newport County AFC join Amnesty’s Football Welcomes campaign to welcome refugees

E COMMUNITY N

ewport County AFC is joining football clubs across the country this month (April) to welcome refugees and people seeking asylum, as part of Amnesty International’s Football Welcomes campaign. The campaign is now in its fifth year and celebrates the contribution players from a refugee background make to the game as well as highlighting the role football can play in bringing people together to create more welcoming communities for refugees. Football Welcomes comes this year during the biggest refugee crisis Europe has seen since the Second World War. Images and stories of people fleeing Ukraine have once again shown the plight of refugees, the trauma they face when fleeing conflict, and the need for countries and communities around the world to welcome them. To mark the month, which is supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, we are Newport County AFC & County in the Community are working with Newport City Council - Children and Young People Services, providing opportunities to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children aged 16/17 years of age. At tonight’s match a first for all the young people they will play friendly matches on the grass area at Rodney Parade 6.30pm-7.15pm. Then watch the first half County v Colchester, they will then have an area to pray before

breaking their fast at around 8.30pm half-time. At County in the Community we would like to thank the Premier League Fans Fund & Premier League Kicks programmes for supporting this valuable work and allowing us to provide opportunities to people within the community of South East Wales. Newport County AFC is one of many clubs from across the Premier League, English Football League, FA Women’s Super League, Championship and National League, Cymru North and South, and grassroots teams that have signed up to take part in Football Welcomes. Naomi Westland, Head of Football Welcomes at Amnesty International UK, said: “The current refugee crisis in Ukraine shines a light on the importance of welcoming refugees wherever they are from, whether it’s Ukraine, Afghanistan, Eritrea or elsewhere. Football Welcomes is a great initiative to do this. “It’s heartening to see clubs like Newport County AFC using football as a powerful force for good, bringing people together and a providing a sense of belonging. “With the support from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, Amnesty will continue to welcome refugees alongside football clubs across the country to show there is more that unites us than divides us.”

S' TRUST?

The Newport County AFC Supporters' Trust is one of more than 140 Supporters' Trusts that exist under the umbrella of Supporters' Direct, a national body that provides assistance to supporters "who wish to play a responsible part in the life of the football club they support". The Trust was originally formed in 2001 and took a controlling stake in the football club in October 2015 following a community share issue which saw County supporters raise a magnificent £236,000 in just a month. Since then, Newport County AFC has been a supporter-owned, community-based club. The primary purpose of the Trust is to provide funding to the club. Our aim is to donate at least £100,000 a season to the club. As well as being owners of an EFL club, Trust members receive a range of benefits depending on their membership tier. All members have guaranteed priority tickets for cup matches. More details about the Trust can be found on our website: www.ncafctrust.org

HOW CAN YOU

PTHETR

The membership packages are as follows... Bronze: £5 a month; Silver: £10 a month; Gold: £20 a month; Platinum: £50+ a month. Corporate membership is available at £1,000 a year or £600 for six months. It won't cost you a penny extra. Just start your online shopping first at www.eosyfundraising.org.uk/causes/ncafctrus t/, then shop as normal. Retailers will then make a small donation to say 'thank you'. There are more than 3,200 retailers to choose from and so far this scheme hos raised almost £18,500 for the Trust.

The Board of the Supporters' Trust currently consists of eight elected directors and two coopted directors. As the Trust is the majority shareholder in the club, all Trust directors ore also registered with the Football League as directors of the club having passed the EFL's Owners and Directors Test.

VOLUNTEER: The Trust and the Club appreciates the many outstanding volunteers who give up their time to help in a variety of ways. If you have the time and skills you think could benefit the club, then please email info@ncafctrust.org

IN THE BEGINNING …

Whereas U’s are comparative newcomers to the football family, formed in 1937, football in the Essex town has a much longer history, with the amateur Colchester Town established in 1873 and the first ever winners of the Essex Senior Cup 11 years later. With their eye-catching pink and black kit, ‘The Oysters’ won successive North Essex League titles around the turn of the 20th century and later won the South Essex and Middlesex Leagues before becoming founder members of the Eastern Counties League in 1935 and the Essex County League two years later. However, club officials’ refusal to turn professional angered a section of supporters, who felt that Colchester’s football team should challenge the supremacy of neighbours Ipswich Town who had recently started paying players. In March 1937, the fans’ group formed Colchester United, who immediately joined the Southern League and ground shared at Town’s Layer Road. By the end of the year, with many of their players joining United, Town folded with reported debts of £300, leaving United as the ‘town’ team and blue rather than pink as the football colour.

HIGHLIGHTS

Colchester can lay claim on arguably the greatest FA Cup shock not involving a non-league outfit when they famously defeated Don Revie’s all-conquering Leeds United 3-2 in the FA Cup Fifth Round in February 1971 in front of a euphoric, but scarcely believing, 16,000 Layer Road crowd. A Ray Crawford brace and a Dave Simmons goal were enough to sink the First Division leaders, who were missing just Billy Bremner and Eddie Gray from their starstudded line-up. Seven days later, just under 10,000 fewer were in attendance at the same venue to see Crawford and Simmonds on target again, as Dick Graham’s U’s recovered from a two-goal deficit, courtesy of George Young and Willie Brown, to defeat County 4-2. U’s best-ever season was their 10th place finish in the Championship in 2006-07, above neighbours Ipswich Town and Norwich City, both of whom they defeated at their then Layer Road home. Southampton, Queen’s Park Rangers, and Wolverhampton Wanderers were other notable scalps, while Leeds United again fell victim to the Colchester curse, though this time the 2-1 victory

W W W. N E W P O RT- C O U N T Y. C O. U K was less than seismic as Dennis Wise’s Whites were sliding into the third tier for the first time in their history. U’s manager at the time was Cwmparc born Geraint Williams, a former Bristol Rovers, Ipswich, Colchester, and Wales midfielder, who later managed the Wales U21 team, while prolific strikers Jamie Cureton and Chris Iwelumo managed 43 goals between them.

DON’T MENTION

•1 989-90. As the newly formed Newport AFC were charging to the Hellenic League Premier Division title in their inaugural campaign, this evening’s visitors were ending 40 years of Football League history with relegation to the Football Conference. Financial difficulties and boardroom changes had dogged the club since the mid-1980s and, despite a brief upturn under legendary Rangers manager Jock Wallace, U’s dropped to the fifth tier. The story had a happy ending however as, after finishing runners-up to Barnet in their debut season, they raced to the title in 1991-92 with Roy McDonough at the helm, winning 17 consecutive League and Cup matches at Layer Road from 21 December to the end of the season. • Wycombe Wanderers. Ask Colchester supporters of a certain age the club they love to hate, and the Adams Park outfit some 100 miles to the west would be the unexpected response. The unlikely rivalry dates back to the 1985-86 season when nonleague Wycombe surprisingly defeated fourth tier Us 2-0 in the FA Cup though the animosity intensified during the previously mentioned 1991-92 Conference championship season, when Us and Wanderers went toe-to-toe at the top of the table for much of the campaign with the former securing the title on the last day via a superior goal difference. Writing in his autobiography, player-manager Roy McDonough said of his illustrious Wycombe counterpart Martin O’Neill: ‘I told the newspaper that I believed Colchester was a more attractive destination for potential signings as we were the ‘professional club’. O’Neill took it the wrong way, thinking I was questioning his professionalism as a manager. But I couldn’t care less about how upset he was, and as soon as I learned about the newspaper leak, I fanned the flames as often as possible, questioning O’Neill’s bottle, the quality of his players compared to ours and forecasting how we were going to batter them at Layer Road. And the boys helped me keep my word, as we hammered them on home turf 3-0.’

U’S TODAY

Confident keeper Goalkeeper Shamal George believes there is a ‘good chance’ that he will still be playing his football for Colchester United next season upon the expiry of his two-year contract. The 24-year-old has impressed since arriving as a free agent after leaving Premier League giants Liverpool and explained to the Essex based ‘Daily Gazette’: ‘The situation is quite tough to talk about. Of course there is a good chance (of playing for Colchester next season). I love it here; it is just that we have to get results. I have to pay a lot of credit to the club - I love playing here so we will see what happens in the summer. We are not safe yet and the boys need to switch on. We have more very important games left that we need to get points out of, because it is not over yet.’

ASSISTANT MANAGER’S VIEW

Interim assistant boss John Dunne, who steered Colchester to League One survival on the final day of the 2012-13 season, is looking for a positive end to the campaign. ‘There is still a lot of football and a lot of points to play for. It is very important that we stay focused. Our focus is still to finish as high as we can having preserved our Football League status.

We are in a strong position to do that, but we need to improve our performances.’

FANS’ VIEWS

Colchester fan and season ticket holderSi Collinson offering his views to ‘The Daily Gazette’ and ‘Essex County Standard’ in his regular column earlier this month: ‘We have done enough to allow us to enjoy the last fixtures and hopefully end on a high. There are positives to take from what (interim manager) Wayne Brown and his team have brought; we are scoring goals and seem harder to beat. But there will need to be a big debrief after the curtain falls as to how we are to ensure we do not have a third season at the wrong end of the table. Until then, let’s carry on our support and cheer the lads to as many points as possible between now and early May.’

MEET THE PLAYERS

COLCHESTER UNITED WITH PHIL TANNER 02 Miles WelchHayes DEFENDER

05 Tommy Smith DEFENDER

Signed a deal until the end of this season in February 2020 when he secured an early release from failing Macclesfield Town. Miles made his debut for Oxford United in 2016 before dropping down to Bath City - where he was named in the Conference South team of the season for 2017-18 - with a brief loan to Oxford City. He signed for Macclesfield in the summer of 2018 and made 47 league appearances there.

Club captain. The Ipswich Town academy graduate, primarily a centreback, topped 240 games for them before moving on to MLS side Colorado Rapids, Sunderland in February 2020 and Colchester in August that year. Tommy lived in New Zealand as a child and after England youth caps became the All Whites’ youngest ever captain, featuring for them at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 London Olympics.

03 Ryan Clampin

06 Brendan Wiredu

With United since he was eight years old, coming through the club’s development centre and academy. Before his debut off the bench in September 2018 Ryan spent all of 2017-18 on loan locally at Maldon & Tiptree where he was an almost ever-present and scored 10 in 41 appearances. The left back is closing in on 50 appearances but is still working on a return to fitness after sustaining a serious knee injury in November.

Rejoined on a permanent basis after leaving Charlton Athletic in the January transfer window. Brendan had previously spent time on loan at Colchester at the start of the 2019-20 season, making 10 appearances in all competitions. He came through the academy at Charlton and made six appearances for them between 2018 and 2020. A versatile midfielder, he can also play at fullback or wingback.

His professional career began in 2003 in his home county with Northampton. He joined Nottingham Forest in 2007 and had a five-year stint at the City Ground before nine years at Ipswich, for whom only eight players have made more appearances.

08 Cole Skuse

14 Noah Chilvers

One of numerous experienced former Ipswich Town players in the squad. Cole was United’s first summer signing of 2021, on a two-year contract, after spending eight years at Portman Road. He began his career at hometown Bristol City and made his debut for them as a sub - against Colchester - in 2005. He went on to clock up more than 300 appearances for the Robins, followed by almost 300 for Ipswich.

Local lad with the academy since he was playing at U9 level. Noah signed on as a scholar in July 2017, captained the U18 side in 2018-19 and became a regular in the U23s. He made his senior debut off the bench against County in March 2019. After a loan to National League South side Bath City in 2019-20 he nailed down a regular place and he is now nearing a century of appearances, including some 40 this season.

MIDFIELDER

10 Alan Judge MIDFIELDER

Another ex-Ipswich man signed last summer. Dubliner Alan’s career began at Blackburn, then in the Premier League, in 2008-09 with loans to Plymouth and Notts County followed by a permanent move to Notts, then back to Blackburn for a further season. He was then a regular at Brentford, helping them reach the Championship and making almost 150 appearances, and joined Ipswich in 2019. Nine caps for Ireland.

11 Freddie Sears STRIKER

Rejoined in July after almost six years at Ipswich Town where he made more than 200 appearances. Freddie, 32, started at West Ham where he scored on his debut off the bench in the Premier League in 2008. After loans at Crystal Palace, Coventry and Scunthorpe he initially joined Colchester on loan in 2011-12 with the move made permanent that summer. He netted 36 goals before making the switch to Ipswich.

12 Owura Edwards MIDFIELDER

Former County youth player on loan from Bristol City. Owura joined after spending the first half of the season on loan at Exeter City and making 17 appearances in all competitions for the Grecians. He has made four appearances for his parent club, with loan time to gain first-team experience at Bath City and Grimsby Town. The speedy winger netted three minutes into his Colchester debut at Sutton in January.

MIDFIELDER

15 Tom Dallison DEFENDER

January arrival from Crawley Town, where he made almost 100 appearances. Tom was with West Ham and Arsenal as a junior before spending five years at Brighton from 2013. His EFL debut came on loan with Crawley in 2015, with other loan spells at Cambridge and Accrington. Leaving Brighton in 2018, he spent half a season with Scottish Championship side Falkirk before rejoining Crawley on a permanent basis in 2019.

16 Corie Andrews MIDFIELDER

On loan since January from League One side AFC Wimbledon, where he is yet to make his debut. Corie had spent the first half of the campaign on loan at struggling Aldershot in the National League, where he netted nine times in 20 games. The 24-yearold came through the youth ranks at Crystal Palace and had spells at non-league Whyteleafe and Kingstonian before signing for Wimbledon last year.

17 Myles Kenlock MIDFIELDER

On loan from Ipswich Town, one of a big influx of players in the January window. Myles went straight into the team and scored on his debut in a 3-0 win away at Salford City. He had spent his entire career up to that point with Ipswich, making 103 appearances across seven seasons with the club in all competitions including four campaigns in the Championship.

18 Tom Eastman

24 John Akinde

Having signed in the summer of 2011, Tom is by far the club’s longest serving player and has made almost 450 first-team appearances while still only 30. He began with the academy at Ipswich Town, where he started aged eight and came through the ranks to play 10 league games. Soon after joining United he had a brief loan to Crawley Town. He has collected the Player of the Year award four times.

Netted what would have been the fastest ever goal here - timed at 23 seconds - for Barnet in 2016, only for it to be expunged as the game was abandoned. John scored 87 goals that did count for the Bees and helped win promotion to the EFL. He joined in January after three seasons at Gillingham, preceded by promotion to L1 with Lincoln. His previous substantive clubs include Crawley, Portsmouth and Bristol City.

19 Armando Dobra

27 Cameron Coxe

Loanee who played for his parent club against County when we won 1-0 at Ipswich in the first round of this season’s EFL Cup in August and for Colchester in the reverse fixture in November. Armando, capped by Albania at U21 level, has played 30 times for Ipswich in all competitions but has been out of the picture at United since January because of the rule restricting matchday squads to five loanees.

Joined the U’s on an initial sixmonth loan from National League side Solihull Moors last summer, the move made permanent in January after a successful first half-season. The Welsh U21 cap began his career at Cardiff City, staying at his boyhood club for more than 10 years and making five appearances. Cameron was released by the Bluebirds in the summer of 2020, joining Solihull where he made 30 appearances.

WAYNE BROWN

Assumed the role after the departure of Hayden Mullins and Alex Dyer on 19 January. Wayne is no stranger to the position, having stood in as caretaker in 2015 and 2021. As manager of Maldon & Tiptree, who put up a mighty struggle against County in the FA Cup in 2019-20 before succumbing to a late Padraig Amond goal, he has had a strong connection with the U’s with many Colchester youngsters spending time on loan there. Wayne played as a defender for clubs including Ipswich Town, Watford and Hull City and made more than 100 appearances for Colchester in three separate spells
