JAMES ROWBERRY

I would like to begin by offering you all a very warm welcome to our final fixture of the 2021-2022 EFL season.

I was really pleased following Monday’s performance away at Port Vale as I felt as though we really demonstrated a lot of our good qualities, mixed with the hard work and determination that this group has. To win away at Port Vale is no easy task and they are where they are for a reason, so it was a thoroughly positive performance and one we were delighted to be able to give to all the travelling away fans and those of you watching at home. Today will provide a tough game, as we experienced when facing Rochdale in December, they have some talented players and can put teams under real pressure so it will take a good performance for us to end this season how we want too in front of you all. On that note, I’d like to welcome Robbie Stockdale, the technical staff, the directors, players and fans from Rochdale and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade. This may not have been the end to the season we had all hoped for, but as a club we will go away, learn, work hard and come back stronger next season. Our work ethic and desire to succeed will never waver and myself and all the club staff will be working tirelessly over the summer to make sure we can approach next season in the best possible manner. Hopefully we can say goodbye to you all for this season in front of a packed Rodney Parade and sign off our season with a positive performance, and one which can hopefully have you counting down the days until you can return for next season and give us more of the fantastic support you have given us this year, even during spells when things haven’t been going our way. I personally want to thank you all for the support you’ve shown towards me, my staff and players this season. You really are a credit to the football club and as I’ve said before, whether it be the long trips as away fans, or the great atmosphere you create at homes games at Rodney Parade, you really are our twelfth man and your unwavering support really helps us through tough periods, and makes the good periods feel even sweeter. I hope you all have a great summer and look forward to welcoming you back next season. Get behind the boys and enjoy the game. James O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 3

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC WITH CHRIS SHINGLER

Hello and welcome to Rodney Parade for this afternoon’s final curtain call; a warm greeting we extend to Rochdale once again in particular, and that of course gives us yet another excuse to raid the programme vaults all over again…

O

ur time ride today takes us to the opening home game of the season, rather than the last, and we land on Saturday August 28th, 1965, where Sonny & Cher were at No.1 with “I Got You Babe” as we welcomed the Dale to Somerton Park. We had already played two away matches, at Chesterfield where former Busby Babe Kenny Morgans’ double saw us open with a good 2-1 win at Saltergate. However, a midweek trip in the opposite direction to the seaside in Devon at Torquay United saw us come unstuck by a single goal to nil. Our 6d priced programme opens on page two with ‘Pen-Pictures of Rochdale’where ten players are featured; none of which I can say ring, jog, or even stir anything cloudy in the old memory bank. I do however note centre-half Ray Aspden had been signed from the Forces in the summer of 1958, and inside-right George Morton had once played for Everton. The busy third page neatly brings us three pieces and up first is the boss, Mr. Newport County himself, Billy Lucas in ‘From the Manager’s Desk’ and it seems we have suffered a few injuries in pre-season, but Billy was sure the “Utility” players covering the missing “Key” men would do a sterling job. As ever, Mr. Lucas 4 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E

was confident that the team could make a few critics eat their words and enjoy a good start to the season. He also touches on the decision of the Football League to allow substitutes and claimed that this will “Make the game more fluid.” In Fred Beare’s ‘Editorial’ he names the injured players in Granville Smith and Jimmy Singer and hoped he would see both “In the County jersey again before long.” Fred also noted that the majority of clubs in the Fourth tier were from up north and claimed the situation made for a “Great financial embarrassment for the remaining southern clubs in this division.” A welcome to Rochdale and a brief potted history of the Spotland club is also provided, thus ending this chocker page, and it’s noted here that they did the double over us the previous

season winning 2-0 in Lancashire and 3-2 in Monmouthshire. The blighters! Laurie Sheffield and Len Hill got our goals, for the record. After the team line-ups, as ever cemented in those days on the middle pages, we have last season’s table printed in full. County finished in 16th place with 42 points, and, seeing as you asked, Brighton & Hove Albion were champions with Millwall, York City and Oxford United also escaping the clutches of the bottom division. Alongside the table is ‘Supporters’ Club Chatter’ and this even spills over onto page seven. As ever, there is an appeal for fans to join up for this new season and it was hoped that last season’s record-breaking number of 1,551 members would be broken, hence a new lofty target being set for 2,000 this time around. Agents were also sought for the new “Ironsides Sweep” which offered prizes of £300 a week and, as per, Bingo was to be played on Wednesday evenings in the “New social club.” The piece ends with a surefire sign of the times, as it was hoped “Miss Josephine Pugh, the reigning Football Queen 1965” would be “Present and travel around the track in an open car.”I can almost hear those shrill wolf whistles from here! Miss Pugh indeed won the competition representing Newport County, and the Supporters’ Club were “Extremely proud” and frankly, why not?! A little info-panel gave fans the chance to note upcoming fixtures at Somerton and up next were Gwynfi in the Welsh League, for our reserves, whilst Barrow were to make the long trip south in the English. The programme’s back page brought us the ‘Fixtures & Results’ and County had a decent season in finishing in 9th spot, this time gaining 48 points from the 46 played; however, Dale finished in the bottom four along with Lincoln City, Bradford

City and bottom-of-the-pile Wrexham and had to apply for re-election. At the champagne end, corks were noisily popped aplenty at Doncaster Rovers (champions) Darlington, Torquay United and Colchester United, who all went up. This match ended one apiece with our goal scored by Graham Reynolds, one of six the popular Newport schoolmaster would pilfer for us that season. Top scorer, however, was Waterford-born Alfie Hale with a not-too-shabby 24 league and cup strikes. Teams: County: Len Weare, John Frowen, John Bird, Malcolm Cook, Graham Rathbone, John Rowland, Ken Morgans, Derek Tapscott, Graham Reynolds, Len Hill, Dai Jones. Sub:David Pugh. Rochdale (as printed): Simon Jones, Roy Ridge, Laurie Calloway, Brian Birch, Ray Aspden, Jim Thompson, Neville Bannister, George Morton, George Stephenson, Reg Jenkins, David Storf. Sub: John Hardman. Attendance: 3,673.

View from the

BOARDROOM A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Rochdale A.F.C. for our last home game of the 21/22 season. As it’s the last game this is going to be a lengthy piece! Firstly, lets focus on today’s game and what is going on. There is a considerable amount to get through and we start by welcoming our charity of the day, The Samaritans. Every 10 seconds, Samaritans responds to a call for help - day or night, for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure. Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis, but also take action to prevent the crisis. They give people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others and encourage, promote, and celebrate those moments of connection between people that can save lives. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. They cannot do that without support, and we are proud to engage with them at today’s game. Please do take a look at their website to see the fantastic work they do and maybe offer some of your time

6 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E

to support them? www.samaritans.org/wales Our Club of the day is Villa Dino FC. One of Newport’s largest and fastest growing grassroots football clubs offering fun football for hundreds of boys and girls aged 4-16 and a pathway into their senior teams. They have brought a few hundred of their eager players today to help us bring the season to a close. I hope everyone has a memorable day that is enjoyable. Before today’s kick off the club will sign the Armed Forces Covenant. We sign this today with representatives from the City’s Armed Forces Community. By signing the Armed Forces Covenant we are demonstrating our intention to support the Armed Forces community and provides us with the opportunity to be recognised by the Employer Recognition Scheme award. This award shows that we are delivering tangible support for the Armed Forces community. The Ministry of Defence, as the representative of HM Government, welcomes these commitments and is grateful for the support being pledged and provided. I will be joined on the pitch by

Lt Col Kevan Thornber (160 Wales Brigade). We also welcome a number of the armed forces community who have come to watch the game as well as supporting the pre-match day entertainment on the “cabbage patch”. Welcome to everyone. We will also have a minute’s applause before the game today to mark the sad passing of Marc Williams, one of the founding Directors. Marc’s brother Dale has written a piece for the programme paying tribute to his brother and the work he undertook over many years in support of the club. Our thoughts are with Marc’s family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Marc. Today we say thank you and farewell to two volunteers who between them have over 70 years’ worth of service to the club. Firstly, the “voice” of the club Tim Thraves will be hanging up his microphone and stepping down as match day announcer and away commentator on I follow. Glyn Neale, the man behind the camera will also be turning off his camera. There are two lovely articles that have been written about Tim and Glyn. As you would expect they will still be around the club but will now be enjoying games in a slightly different way. Our thanks to both of them for all they have contributed over many years. Following today’s game, the manager, staff, and players will undertake a lap of honour to thank supporters for their fantastic support throughout the season. As is often said, all the first team value the support provided by our superb fans. From Carlisle on a Tuesday night to packing the Parade, the support is second to none. We will also have our annual awards event after today’s game. We have been advertising this for a few weeks and it is a ticketed event. Various areas of the club are represented from

the Community right through to the Disabled Association and Exiles together. Our thanks to those who are presenting the awards and well done to the players, supporters and staff who will be the recipients. Now for some heartfelt thank you’s - as you can imagine there are plenty. Firstly, a thank you to all the supporters - all 93000 (minus todays gate) who have come to support us throughout the season at Rodney Parade. We have averaged 4,245 this season which is magnificent and much appreciated. Our volunteers, who are integral to the running of the club, have been terrific as always. The match day would not function in the way it does if it wasn’t for those people giving up their time to contribute. Even away from a match day there is tremendous work undertaken by people throughout the week to allow the club to function and prosper. Why? Because they love the club. On behalf of the Board, our thanks to everyone! Our thanks to all the office staff who work tirelessly to keep the club running smoothly; Rodney Parade staff and match day stewards for creating an excellent facility; County in the Community for the work they do in our community and the match day experience; our partners who enable the club to function – Newport live and FAW to mention a few. There are many of them and we are appreciative of the role they play. Thanks to all our sponsors who have supported us throughout the season and continue to do so for the forthcoming season. Reflecting on the season both on and off the field. Let’s start with on the field. Whilst everyone was disappointed we didn’t manage to keep our promotion ambitions going, there have been

some notable highlights in a year of change and transition: • Having two players, Finn Azaz and Dom Telford in the EFL League two team of the year •

Finn Azaz winning young player of the year for League two

Dom Telford nominated player of the year for League two and winner of golden boot award

Now having clubs approach us from the premier league and championship with a view to offering us players due to our brand of football and facilities

Style and brand of football has been exciting and energetic and hopefully we are only seeing the start of it!

our 18/19 season points tally and will be only one point behind our record points tally of 73. Let’s hope that can be achieved, and we build on our strong performance and excellent result at Port Vale. Off the field we have seen the club progress once again. Here are some of the highlights • Match Day Visits: In the season 2021/22 we have had a match day visit for every match. With the smaller teams, we have been able to offer two teams to be our official club of the day. In total 1068 Team members and coaches have visited us this season…in addition to that the accompanying adults and children brought in with the team have totalled 1512! •

Huge credit must of course go to the community team for their continued support. Spytty the dog who is pawfect for the children. The match day experience has given us nothing but superb feedback. This is so we can give young children in Newport and the surrounding area a chance to see what we are about, particularly where they may not have had the opportunity to see live football before and enjoy a match experience.

Further to our match-day experience, County in the Community have also run a ‘Community Corner’ headed by Logan Busuttil, where they have entertained over 200 participants in 22 sessions this season.

All of our FunZone (in the Marquee) and more recently the FanZone (with big screen showing live football) has been greatly supported by The Welsh

This all enabled by the playing surface which having been to every away game this season is the best surface in League two. I know I am biased but given it has been nominated for best playing surface in League two, I am not alone!

It would be remiss of me not to mention the change and as we know any business that goes through a change creates an element of uncertainty and instability. The transition from previous manager Michael Flynn, who as we know was here for a long time and had many memorable moments has been managed in a manner that has allowed the club to continue to progress. The continuity provided by previous assistant manager Wayne Hatswell has supported that transition. We look forward to welcoming them both back to Rodney Parade next season. If we do win today, we would have beaten

8 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E

Sweet Co (thewelshsweetco.com), R&N Inflatables and our partners at Newport City Radio who, led by the brilliant Lamsie, have entertained our many audiences with their player Q&A, all request discos and live music acts amongst all the other things they do for the pre-match warm up! •

Our work in the area of Safeguarding is being recognised by the EFL as an example of best practice and we thank Kelly Anderson for her work in this area. We have recently trained a number of staff as mental health first aiders as well.

My personal highlight was hosting the visit of the Bradford Bantams to Rodney Parade. This was organised by our Exile Together group. We were then honoured to receive a warm welcome when we visited Bradford at the return fixture

One mention about the accounts for this year that declared a modest profit for the fourth year running.

There is lots to be proud of at the club and that gives us a solid foundation to progress. As we look forward to next season there is an “air of excitement” as our planning is significantly progressed and also the close season is shorter than normal due to the season starting at the end of July. Next seasons fixture list will be released on the 23rd June – always an exciting day. We will be following a close season plan that will cover our retain and release list, kit launch, season ticket launch, and a number of events where we will be engaging with sponsors and supporters alike. We will keep everyone informed through our normal channels. Good luck to the lads this afternoon and once again thank you to everyone for their unrivalled support throughout the campaign. Gavin

THANK YOU GLYNN

Today we say a fond farewell to Glynn Neale who many fans will know for being the ‘man behind the camera’.

G

lyn has been a volunteer for Newport Count y AFC for over thirty years operating in a variety of roles! Most notably he has been the person responsible for all work seen by our supporters for over 16 seasons, recording, editing and publishing the match-day footage and interviews for the various online outlets we have. In addition, Glyn had also previously volunteered for support duties and even in the club shop. Glyn certainly has been part of the 'Vision' of Newport County AFC. This season Glyn has also been co - commenting on Ifollow with Charlie Brown at home games and Tim Thraves at away games. Glyn was asked about his memorable moments in his time with the club and his highlights were the Havant and Waterlooville game at Spytty which sealed our promotion to the Conference

National. The victory over Wrexham at Wembley which meant a return to the Football League. The "Great Escape" game against Notts County and of course all the Cup matches against Spurs, Man City, Leeds, Leicester,

2 2 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E

Middlesborough etc. as highlights of his time at our club. We’d like to thank Glynn for all his hard work over the years. He will be greatly missed but know as an avid supporter of the club he will not be going far.

THANK YOU TIM

Today we say a fond farewell to the ‘voice of the club’. Tim Thraves has been the voice of home games as the match day announcer and away games being the commentator on iFollow.

T

im started to support Newport County at the age of 6 and his late father was a director of the club in the early 1960’s. His passion and love for the club added to by being Newport born and bred were what made him join

as a PA announcer in 1975/76 (a 3-1 Home victory against Lincoln City) and he carried on as a PA announcer or match commentator for Gwent hospitals. During his time with Newport Count y, Newport AFC and Newport County AFC he has

supported and volunteered his services for many thousands of games with the Wembley fixture against Wrexham, where we won back promotion to the Football League, being the highlight. Being able to have the radio mic at pitch level and being able to address the fans at Wembley finals on three occasions remain something special to him. So, let’s get behind Tim Thraves....and make some NOISE!!! Tim’s voice will be greatly missed but after 40 years of service I’m sure everyone would agree he more than deserves a break to spend time with his family! Thanks, Tim, for your great service to the club. Now you can enjoy the games without the pressure of preparing for every game.

MARC WILLIAMS

On behalf of Marc’s family, I would like to thank you all in advance for remembering him and his contribution to this football club through your applause today.

Midnight Ramadan football

idnight Ramadan football is a project that we only started this year in the Holy of month of Ramadan, it is a project that has been in discussion for the last couple of years but with unfortunate events of COVID 19, it has not been possible. The project has been funded by the Premier League Kicks and Fans Fund programme, the aim of the project is to help give young Muslim men fasting during the month of Ramadan the opportunity to still be able to get involved in football and enjoy themselves. The sessions were held every Saturday in the month of Ramadan at Newport Indoor Football Centre 12:15am- 1:30am, for the first year of

2 8 | O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E

running this programme the feedback has been very good with multiple participants saying how much they loved it and how beneficial it was during this beautiful month. We engaged the young and the old during these sessions with two pitches available, we had 16–18-year-olds on one pitch and over 18s on the other pitch, the atmosphere during the sessions were amazing with everyone enjoying and being able to socialise while they were resting waiting to play their next match. This a project we will look to run every Ramadan to be able to give Muslims this opportunity to still be able to play and enjoy themselves.

W

e have lost a son, brother, husband and father. The birth of Newport AFC involved many people and many hours, great ingenuity and above all, belief that somehow it could be done. When the original County folded, Marc (just 28 and “only” a fan until then) spent hours on his own initiative making calls to leagues and associations, trying to understand what could be done to get senior football back to Newport. He usually rang me afterwards to recount the “Who on earth are you?”reactions from many of his conversations. Marc then contacted David Hando, who asked him to speak at the Lifeline meeting on 14 April 1989, to argue for setting up a new club. Marc was as eloquent that evening as ever – I was so proud of him - and it was he who later came up with Football with a Future, perfectly capturing the spirit of the moment. Marc was a founding director of the new

club and its first club secretary, a role that took up huge amounts of time, and which had to be learned on the job as he found out how to navigate the wiles of football administration. He had wit and humour and was always able to see the funny side of football. He played for a team in Reading, where regular opponents were Broadmoor (who played home games only…). He recounted that he was told not to upset the opposition centre half, nevertheless “…he hacked me down, picked me up and said to me, “Sorry mate, you can get away with murder in here” . From his first County game in 1969 to his last a few weeks ago, he lived the highs and the lows like the rest of us. Marc is no longer with us but his place in the history of this club is there forever. Rest in peace my brother. Dale Williams O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 2 9

ENGLISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE - LEAGUE TWO SPOTLIGHT Stevenage boss Steve Evans has never lost against Tranmere in the Football League, winning one and drawing two of his three such games.

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough has only lost 1 of his 6 meetings with Crawley in the EFL (W3 D2), and is looking to do the league double over them for the first time here.

Colchester have lost on each of their last two visits to Newport in the Football League; the U’s haven’t lost three such games in a row since October 1969 (run of five).

S' TRUST?

The Newport County AFC Supporters' Trust is one of more than 140 Supporters' Trusts that exist under the umbrella of Supporters' Direct, a national body that provides assistance to supporters "who wish to play a responsible part in the life of the football club they support". The Trust was originally formed in 2001 and took a controlling stake in the football club in October 2015 following a community share issue which saw County supporters raise a magnificent £236,000 in just a month. Since then, Newport County AFC has been a supporter-owned, community-based club. The primary purpose of the Trust is to provide funding to the club. Our aim is to donate at least £100,000 a season to the club. As well as being owners of an EFL club, Trust members receive a range of benefits depending on their membership tier. All members have guaranteed priority tickets for cup matches. More details about the Trust can be found on our website: www.ncafctrust.org

IN THE BEGINNING …

The present club arrived on the scene in 1907 following the demise of Rochdale Town, formed seven years earlier to replace an earlier Rochdale AFC who played in the Lancashire Combination and Lancashire League between 1896 and 1900. The new outfit spent their inaugural season in the lower ranked Manchester League, before joining the Lancashire Combination where the competition included reserve sides of several local Football League teams. After winning the title for a second successive season in 1912, ‘Dale’ applied for a place in the Football League themselves, though received just one vote. A second application seven years later also proved unsuccessful before they finally reached the promised land in 1921 as founder members of Division 3 (North). They have remained in the organisation ever since.

HIGHLIGHTS

Rochdale’s League Two promotion winning season of 200910 ended a record 36-year run in the Football League’s lowest division. However, Spotland regulars had a few nervy moments before finally securing the treasured third place as Keith Hill’s side won just one of their final nine games! However, with twin strikers Chris Dagnall and Chris O’Grady netting 42 goals between them, and current West Ham United defender Craig Dawson also reaching double figures, they finished nine points clear of fourth placed Morecambe. Rochdale’s secured fourth tier promotion again in 2014, once more in third spot, with current Scunthorpe United boss Keith Hill back at the helm for a second spell after returning from Barnsley. Their final match of the campaign was a trip to Rodney Parade, where County secured a 2-1 victory despite playing the last six

minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Ryan Jackson. Fourth Division Dale reached the League Cup Final in 1962, losing 4-0 on aggregate to Norwich City, who included Chepstow born former County wing half Ollie Burton in their starting line up for both legs. Manager Tony Collins was the first black manager in the Football League and received the Service to Football Award at the 2017 League Managers Association Awards. He died four years later at the age of 94, with former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday boss Howard Wilkinson describing him as ‘a true pioneer of the sport’.Our visitors remained the only fourth tier outfit to reach the final of the competition until Bradford City repeated the feat against Swansea City in 2013.

DON’T MENTION

•T he 1977-78 and 1979-80 campaigns, as Dale finished bottom of the fourth tier for the only occasions in their history. In those pre relegation days, our visitors survived the dreaded re election vote but on the latter instance by just one vote over north west neighbours Altrincham, who had attracted support from their FA Cup exploits. Nevertheless,Bob Stokoe’s Rochdale still managed to almost derail the promotion ambitions of Len Ashurst’s Newport County, by defeating thev Ironsides 2-0 on the penultimate game of the Fourth Division season. Second half goals by Jimmy Seal and Nigel O’Loughlin and a less than auspicious refereeing performance by George Courtney – who refereed the FA Cup Final between West Ham United and Arsenal 11 days later – left County with it all to do at Walsall the following Saturday. That’s another story! • The 1973-74 season was instantly forgetable for our Greater Manchester visitors, who won just two games as they finished 21 points from safety at the foot of the Third Division. Managed by Walter Joyce, father of future Burnley and Bolton midfielder Warren, Rochdale managed just two victories all season; 2-1 at Southend United in September and a 3-2 home win over Shrewsbury Town four months later. Shrews joined Dale in Division 4 the following season, as our visitors began their 36-year stay at that level.

scored more goals with the opportunities that we had. Every goal that you concede is preventable, in my view, and some are more preventable than others, and we did gift them a couple I think.’

FANS’ VIEWS

Some views on ‘The Rochdale Forum’ following last weekend’s disappointing defeat to Bristol Rovers. Thanks to the posters named. ‘Robbie has some big decisions to make next week; I hope he is ruthless and efficient.Such a shame the first half display was very good, and Dale really should have been out of sight with some better decision making with the final ball.Onto Newport, then over to the management to put us in the best possible position to compete next season.’ ‘Dale 4 Life’ on the future. ‘Unless there is a massive change from somewhere, then I fear non-league beckons next season.’ ‘todmordendale’ is not so positive. ‘All in all, I think the Manager and Board can be relatively satisfied with their work. We stayed up, played pretty well against some of the better teams and have had to overcome a lot of injuries which must have made life much more difficult. Let’s all hope we get the new players we need in early enough for them to have a proper close season and we can start to look up the table next season instead of looking at who is behind us.’ While ‘49thseason’ has high hopes for the 50th!

DALE’S TODAY

Making progress Chairman Simon Gauge believes that there is plenty to look forward to next season as the club are in ‘a stable financial position’ and working hard to maximise all available commercial revenue opportunities. The board are also planning for ‘a significantly increased playing budget for next season’. In a message on the club website last week, the chairman added: ‘Whilst the 2021/22 season will go down in the history of the club for many non-football reasons, we end this season as a fan owned club with over 500 different fan shareholders, including both the Rochdale AFC Community Trust and Dale Supporters Trust who are our largest recognised shareholder. I promised from my first day as Chairman that we would be a club focused on our supporters and we are very proud to be a sustainably run club set at the heart of the local community. Our motivation next season is to continue serve that community as best as we can as an EFL member club.’

MANAGER’S VIEW

Robbie Stockdale after last week’s dramatic 4-3 home defeat to Bristol Rovers. ‘The Gas’ scored four second half goals, including an injury time winner, after the home side led 2-0 at the break. ‘I would have been really disappointed to have drawn it, so to lose it in the manner that we did isnot good enough on our part. I thought the players, performance wise, for the main, were very, very good. I thought the game plan worked - we should have

MEET THE PLAYERS

ROCHDALE AFC WITH PHIL TANNER 01 Jay Lynch

04 Jimmy McNulty

First joined Dale in the early weeks of the 2019-20 season and has since twice extended his contract. Jay, 28, came through the ranks at Manchester United and also spent time at Bolton and Accrington, but most of his career appearances have come during successful spells at Salford City and AFC Fylde, totalling almost 200 games across both clubs and helping Fylde win the FA Trophy in 2018-19.

Arrived in June 2015, rejoining Keith Hill who managed him at Barnsley. He has since played more than 200 games and now also coaches. Jimmy, 37, played Championship football at Barnsley before helping Bury to L2 promotion in 2015. Starting with Wrexham, as well as loans he went on to play for Macclesfield, Stockport - another promotion from L2 - and Brighton. Scotland U17 and U19 cap.

02 Corey O’Keeffe

05 Max Taylor

Started the season on loan from Mansfield Town with the move made permanent in January. Corey joined the Stags from Birmingham City the previous summer. Equally at home at fullback or in midfield, he spent 2019-20 on loan at relegation-bound Macclesfield Town and had a half-season stay at National League side Solihull Moors in 2018-19. He has represented Ireland at youth levels from U16 to U19.

An outstanding example for young sportsmen who lost a year of his early career to treatment for testicular cancer. Mancunian Max, 22, began in his home city in the academy at United and appeared twice as a sub for their U21s in the EFL Trophy. He also spent time on loan at Stalybridge Celtic and Kidderminster and joined Dale last summer when he was one of six youngsters released from Old Trafford.

Began with Newcastle United but never played for their first team, although he was a regular for the U21s in the EFL Trophy. 10 Alex Newby MIDFIELDER

Signed in August 2020 from Chorley. The 26-year-old started his career at hometown club Barrow in 2014 and spent two seasons at Holker Street before moving to Chorley, via a spell with Clitheroe, in February 2018. We are an Army Reserve unit located in Newport and Abertillery, South Wales. We are equipped with the 105 mm ‘Light Gun’ and we are ready to conduct a range of missions, including responding to emergencies in the UK, firing Royal Gun Salutes, and deploying people on military operations overseas. When you join us, you get involved in everything the Regular Army does, and you are paid for the time you serve. Close Support artillery offers a unique sense of teamwork and camaraderie. We rely upon the skill and determination of our people – there’s nothing quite like belonging to a close-knit team and firing the Light Gun, in all weathers, by day and night! Being a Close Support artillery soldier demands resilience, determination and a sense of humour. It will develop you in ways that no civilian role can. From the start, you will achieve a sense of fulfilment, experience adventure and get paid for your time. And as your Army Reserve career progresses and your knowledge, experience and leadership develops, you can achieve promotion.

We train our people to develop highly valued skills and qualifications, such as: • Digital Communications • Information Technology • Operational Planning • Logistics Planning and Delivery • Equipment Care and Maintenance • Driving (including Heavy Goods Vehicles) • Leadership • Teamwork • Problem solving • Fitness and Healthy Living

We are actively recruiting, so if you would like to join the team, visit: apply.army.mod.uk/register or email one of our recruiters for more information: 104RA-recruiting@mod.gov.uk O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 4 3
