I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for today’s EFL League Two fixture against newly promoted Grimsby Town.

Firstly, I was delighted following Saturday’s result and felt as though it was proof that, once again, we are beginning to get what we deserve this season. Harrogate have not had a bad start to the season themselves and to go there and keep a clean sheet whilst scoring four times and looking really dangerous whenever we had the ball was really pleasing and testament to the hard work that we’ve been putting in throughout pre-season and training so far this season. A huge thank you again to the fans who made the long journey up to Yorkshire to support us, it was great to be able to give you a performance that would send you home happy after travelling that far.

Following on from your fantastic support at Harrogate on Saturday and then Exeter on Tuesday, it’s good to be back at Rodney Parade and hopefully we can get another good atmosphere which definitely pushes us on in important moments. There will be times this season where things aren’t going our way, just as there will be times that things are going really well and having your support and knowing that we are all in it together really does have a huge impact.

We then travelled to Exeter on Tuesday for a Papa John’s Trophy fixture, where we again came away with a great away result and likewise, performance. Participation in any competition is exciting and this is one that we certainly want to perform in and progress as far as possible. It does also give players the opportunity for more minutes and to come in and stake their claim for a position in the side, which is exactly what I feel players have done so far in cup games this season. We’ve played three teams in higher divisions than us and to be so competitive against teams above us in the pyramid is really pleasing.

FROMAMBERTHE ATTIC

We travel back to the 1968/69 season this afternoon as we welcome our guests Grimsby Town to Rodney Parade. The Mariners included two very well-known names in their ranks that evening, in John Macey and Newport-born Graham Rathbone….

I t was Friday night under-the-lights at Somerton on the 28thof February 1969 - presumably to avoid a clash with a Welsh Five Nations rugby match the following day - when Grimsby arrived in South Wales and were seen off by two goals to nil.Inour 1/- priced ‘Official Pro gramme,’ a 12-page issue, we open to find‘Presenting Grimsby Town F.C’ on page two and discov er that they had been relegated the previous season from the Third Division and were struggling somewhat this campaign too; in deed, at kick-off time they found themselves having just Bradford Park Avenue below them! However, they had turned us over on the opening day of the season (3-0) at Blundell Park in front of 4,746 Goalkeeperfans.Macey of course was to join us in June 1970 and made 220 league and cup appear ances between our sticks, and the incredibly popular custodian, who was born in Bristol, even returned to the County in the early 1980s to manage our Welsh League (reserves) outfit. The sports shop he estab lished on Caerleon Road in the city is still going strong today.

Both were home wins with Peterborough United (4-2) and Exeter City (2-1) being our victims.Gates however were poor with just 1,649 present for the Posh fixture and a paltry 1,427 for the Grecian’s clash. Our cup form wasn’t anything to brag about either

Rathbone, who was a no-nonsense centre-half, had 218 Ironsides appearances in his locker and had moved north in November 1966 for a fee of Following£10,000. seamlessly on, page three brings us our ‘Results & Fixtures.’It had been a difficult one for us too, but we were in a fairly comfortable 15th spot yet had won only twice since the turn of the year.

Rogers was lamenting “Atrocious” weather, key players injured, not to mention“Other matters which brought the glare of unwanted publicity,” although no explanation as to what those matters might be is offered, unfortunately.Second-hand car trader Cyril posed the question: “What could possibly go wrong next?!” I can’t help but think that’s a statement a fair few of our chairman must have muttered over the years!

Mr. Rogers also acknowledges the support given from neighbours Cardiff City who had also sanctioned the loan spell of Bryn Jones to us. Tony Buck had been sold recently to Rochdale, and the directors wished him good luck and pointed out that the sale was out of “Absolute necessity.”Swiftlyfollowing was a round -up of recent team ‘Line ups’ and in our last home match, just over 1,500 had been bothered to watch a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe United. For the record, midfielder Len Hill scored our goal from theInspot.‘Supporters’ Club Chatter’ notice is given in bold type of a “Special General Meeting” to be held in the Social Club with the directors on Monday the 10th of March; the meeting was described as “Extremely important for the present and the future of Newport County Football Club.”

Page four brings a round-up of ‘Diary Dates’ and as well as two cabaret dances to look forward to - one at the Ebbw Bridge Club the other at Tito’s in Cardiff - we had John “Polly” Rowland’s forthcoming Testimonial match against Portsmouth to get excited about, as well as a visit from table-topping and champions-elect Doncaster Rovers. Heady days, my friends! Club chairman Cyril Rogers is up next and as usual, there was a financial crisis looming menacingly over theChairmanclub.

Three days later we also played against Cardiff City in another hastily arranged “Fund Raising” friendly where 3,846 watched an entertaining encounter that the Blue birds won by five goals to three.

with Bristol City giving us the elbow from the League Cup, 0-2 at Ashton Gate, while Exeter knocked us out of the FA version (1-3) at Somerton Park following a hard-fought no-score draw at St James Park. A consequence of that early exit was an away friendly arranged at Home Park, Plymouth on the date of the Second Round with the Pilgrims spanking us 5-1.

Lastly, younger fans are reminded that pennants from other clubs are available tonight and “A fresh supply of Manchester United, West Ham United and West Brom wich Albion” had been ordered.

On the inside-back page there was another reminder of Polly’s benefit match and a list of ‘Ball Donations’that included Newport Automatics, British Home Stores, The South Wales Argus, aswell as Cardiff firm M&W Shopfitters and the Patrons of the Lyceum Tavern. Well done all! The back page is taken over by ‘Mon Referee’who looks at a few laws of the game and, rather topically for this day and age, the debate is mainly over the interpretation of the hand-ball law! Some things never change, I guess! This Friday night feast turned into a rather decent one for us as we saw off the Mariners 2-0 as mentioned, with Len Hill and Ian Hamilton grabbing the all-important goals. However, after this match we only won two more games, with Lincoln City (2-1) and rock-bottom Bradford PA (1-0) being the hapless pair and we slumped to a final finishing spot of 22nd– just one place above Grimsby by three points.

Teams:County:Len Weare, Terry Cooper, Mike McLaughlin, Tony Jones, Mike Deacy, John Rowland, Len Hill, Ian Hamilton, Ken Wookey, Bryn Jones, Jeff Thomas. Sub: George Young. Grimsby (as printed): John Macey, Dave Worthington, John Dunclisse, Bobby Ross, Graham Rathbone, Keith Jobling, Stewart Brace, Mike Hickman, Gordan Walker, Dave Boyoen and Brian Oates.

Our Club of the Day is Monmouth Town FC who offer girls and boys from the ages of 6+ a chance to play the beautiful game all the way to first team level. First and foremost, MTFC is about the kids. They endeavour to build a warm supportive club where every child’s de velopment is important and as such follow some basic principles as a grassroots club, namely welcoming all children regardless of skills and ability and helping build the community through volunteers. Find out more from them at www.monmouthtown.co.uk. Enjoy your day.

A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Grimsby Town for this afternoon’s home game in League Two. A s they say, a week is a long time in football, and that has certainly been the case with a fantastic away win at Harrogate last week, closely followed by the away win at Exeter in the Papa John Trophy. Thanks to all the fans who made the long trip to Harrogate and those who went to Exeter. I wanted to reflect back on James’s decision to share publicly the operation he had before the season started. Whilst very much a personal decision, James felt it was important to live out the club values of openness and honesty. It is remarkable to think he had an operation one day, was back in observing training 48 hours later and then taking the game on the following Saturday. That reflects how determined James is to make the club successful. As you can imagine, there were multiple conversations over this period and indeed the lead up to the operation. James is keen to not allow his pacemaker to define him, he wants to define it. He is certainly doing that and wants to show others at a young age you can still live a normal life, be a manager or whatever you want to be, even after such an operation. Credit to him for doing so. One of the things that was particularly pleasing was that James was afforded the respect to decide when the time was right for him to share his condition. Whilst many within the club were aware they respected the confidentiality. That speaks volumes of the club. Now James has shared it publicly I know he is humbled by the level of support he has received. Again, this speaks volumes of the community we serve. Thank you for the support in what was a difficult time for James, his family and indeed everyone at the club. Turning to this week and the closure of the transfer win dow. We have brought in our last signing of the window. Welcome to Haydn Lindley who joins us from Aston Villa. As we have relayed on a number of occasions, Darren and James have been implementing the agreed plan. As with all plans they have to be agile to reflect ever changing circumstances. This has been no different. Please give Haydn an Amber army welcome. Focusing on today’s game

Our Charity of the Day is Abbi Thomissen, on behalf of the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Both Newport County AFC and Abbi have strong reasons to support the BHF. Abbi is running the London Marathon on the 2nd of October raising money for BHF in memory of her cousin who sadly passed away in 2021. Abbi will have a bucket collection around the entrance gates for today’s match goers to give generously, as well as selling some BHF charity pins and wristbands in the Marquee prior to the kick-off. Good luck with the marathon Abbi. The pre- match entertainment has a full programme before today’s game hosted by Newport City Radio. We have the fantastic County in the Community in the mar quee entertaining our younger supporters with some exciting activities as well as The Welsh Sweet Company and R & N Inflatables. Good luck to James and lads this afternoon. Gavin

First team coach Jarred Harvey led the side, supported by Academy staff for their first game of the season.

A great test for the young exiles against senior opposi tion. The next game for the development side is later in September with final details to be confirmed.

The Development team were in action last Wednesday 24th August,

P laying against Welsh Premier league opposition Cardiff Met at their Cyncoed Campus.

a fairly even affair all evening with chances for both teams being few and far between. As the game wore on, a number of enforced changes lead to a lack of cohesion in the back line and met taking the lead in the 85th minute. The young exiles tried to get themselves back in the game but a swift counter-attack lead to the Welsh Premier league side going 2-0 in the 90th minute which put the game to bed.

Our visitors’ origins can be traced to a September 1878 meeting at the town’s Wellington House, with members of Worsley Cricket Club suggesting the formation of a football ‘branch’ to occupy their players in the winter months. The proposal proved popular and Grimsby Pelham FC was formed, taking their suffix from a significant local landowning family. Within a year, the more mundane ‘Town’ replaced Pelham and the club spent the next nine years playing friendly matches prior to joining the short-lived Combination in 1888. While at their original Clee Park home, Grimsby experimented with floodlights in the 1882-83 season, spacing eight pylons around the playing surface and pumping tar from a barrel to each pylon to create a gas light. Nearly 80 years later, in September 1960, a more sophisticated system saw electric floodlights purchased from Wolverhampton Wanderers switched on for the first time for the Division 3 encounter with Newport County, who could not quite darken the mood of the 12,000 plus home supporters as Mariners edged to a 2-1 victory. Town have spent 12 seasons in the top flight of English football, with a best placed finish of fifth under Frank Womack in 1934-35, whenSwansea-born Welsh international forward Pat Glover netted 34 goals. With their relegation to the Conference in 2010, Grimsby became the fourth club to compete in the top five divisions of the English pyramid, following in the footsteps of Carlisle United, Oxford United and Luton Town. The ‘club’ is gradually growing, with Leyton Orient, Notts County and Oldham Athletic its more recent members.

PAST MANAGER … LENNIE LAWRENCE is guaranteed a special place in Newport football history after arriving as First Team Management Consultant to Michael Flynn in March 2017, with County 11 points adrift of safety at the foot of League Two. One ‘Great Escape’ two FA Cup runs and a League Two play-off Final later, Lennie left to pursue a similar role at Stevenage, though the 74-year-old has been out of the game since leaving Boro in December 2020. Some 20 years earlier, in August 2000, Brighton-born Lawrence was appointed manager of second tier Grimsby Town, who eventually finished 18th, avoiding relegation with a run of three victories in April and a final day 1-0 win over already promoted Fulham. The following season saw the gaffer win the season’s first manager of the month award after guiding Town to the top of the league, following that up with a 2-1 League Cup Third Round victory over holders Liverpool at Anfield, courtesy of a last minute extra time Phil Jevons winner. However, just two months later the former Middlesbrough boss lost his job with Grimsby one off the bottom of the First Division table. A club statement read: ‘Grimsby Town Football Club have terminated the contract of Lennie Lawrence with immediate effect. After a disappointing run of results, both parties have agreed that a change may be beneficial to the club.’ Club Captain Paul Groves took charge and steered Grimsby to safety, though Mariners were relegated to the third tier at the end of the following campaign.

MANAGER’S VIEW … Paul Hurston his side’s promising start to the season: ‘Points are precious; we are new to the league, and we want to try and get as many points on the board as possible early on to give us a bit of a cushion, so you are not chasing the pack right from the off.’

MARINERS TODAY …

Versatile Harry Harry Clifton earned the plauditswith both goals in his side’s 2-1 victory at Michael Flynn’s Walsall seven days ago, as Town came from behind to return to North East Lincolnshire with all three points. The 24-year-old actually played in three different positions at the Bescot Stadium, explaining to ‘Grimsby Live’: ‘I can play in multiple positions. I am happy that I am contributing to the team while doing that, and when I have to move positions, I am still affecting games, and that is the total aim wherever I play.Being reliable in multiple positions is a good trait and reputation to have as a player, and I think it shows that I have a good read of the game, and the level of performance is not going to drop if I switch to a different position. We had to change the formation in the game, so it is good that I am known for being versatile because the manager trusted me to continue in the game, and I am glad we sent the 807 travelling fans home happy in the end.’ The 12th Man With record season ticket sales and over 8000 Town supporters in attendance for League Cup tie with Nottingham Forest, the feel good factor is certainly back at Blundell Park following their dramatic National League Play-off Final victory over Solihull Moors last term. Summer arrival from Burton Albion, Bryn Morris,is certainly appreciative of the backing of the Mariners faithful, revealing that it has been a big part of manager Paul Hurst’s team talks. ‘They made some great noise at Blundell Park against Forest. The gaffer has always said that it is “our house”, and we have to use the support to our advantage, and it does give us a massive push.I am sure everyone around the club will see the benefits of the support as the season continues. So far, they have turned out in their numbers for every game, and of course, it helps us on the pitch. It gives you that extra five or ten percent, even more so away from home when we are in difficult situations in unfamiliar surroundings, the noise levels are just an extra boost for us as players.’

FAN’S VIEW … Mariners fan Thomas Sargenttells ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine he is not looking forward to visiting Rodney Parade! ‘Last season was epic! Paul Hurst has probably cemented his place in the top five Grimsby managers ever. His strength is finding good players who embody the team ethic, though his weakness is being too cautious at times. However, I am least looking forward to playing Newport away. We have a terrible record at their place.’
