We’ve been looking forward to this tie since our fantastic result away at Luton in the first round and hopefully we can put on another good performance this evening and give ourselves a chance of progressing into the next round. It was pleasing to be drawn at home for this round as it gives us the chance to play in front of you and your fantastic support which always manages to give us that extra boost.
Chairman: Gavin Foxall Directors: Bob Herrin,
Today will prove to be another competitive game, against a team performing well in the division above. I want to welcome Danny and Nicky Cowley, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Portsmouth and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade.
Following on from your fantastic support on Tuesday, you were once again a real driving force on Saturday and stuck with the boys even after we’d gone behind, which is a credit to you and the fantastic support you give us. When you do stay behind us, even through the tougher periods, it really embeds the feeling that we are all in this together and makes those moments to celebrate, such as turning Saturday around and getting the three points even sweeter. We look forward to hopefully seeing a packed-out Rodney Parade again this evening.
James
I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for tonight, our second round Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth, following on from two consecutive home league fixtures. I was delighted following Saturday’s result and felt as though we finally got what we deserved this season. Tranmere are always a difficult team to play against and the way we managed to cause them lots of problems and largely nullify their key threats was really pleasing. I’ve been saying all season that we haven’t been far away and I think Saturday was clear evidence of that. My only issue with Saturday was that we didn’t go on and get the third goal to make things slightly more comfortable, which again would have been thoroughly deserved based on our performance.
Get behind the boys and enjoy the game.

JAMES ROWBERRY Joe Crocker, Kevin Ward, Mark Crook, Mike Everett,
Overleaf we have all the info you ever needed on Pompey.Theirsquad was strong, as you would expect, with names like Peter Mellor, a cup finalist four years previously with Fulham in goal, our very own Newport-born and for mer County centre-half Steve Aizlewood, Kenny Todd, a £200,000 signing from Port Vale, and forward Jeff Hem merman, now a Newport resident himself. It was a squad that be fitted their club status and tremendous support.
To set the scene: we had won an incredible Tuesday night encounter down on the south coast on the 23rd of October by two goals to nil, with Steve Lowndes and Keith Oakes on However, target.thenight and cel ebrations were dampened by the horrific leg break suffered by our star striker, the very popular Howard Goddard. So, needless to say, County gaffer Len Ashurst was in re flective mood in his opening ‘Amber Talk’ column. Noting that the incident was a complete accident, he urged our fans not to carry out any “Witch-hunt” against the Pompey players. He went onto acknowledge the fact that Portsmouth had “Bent over backwards to help us and Howard” giv ing fans who idolised our blonde centre-forward – who, unbeknown to most at the time was on the verge of a big money move to Luton Town, then of Division Two (Championship) - reassurance that Howard was com fortable at home.

This enticing cup draw that sees Portsmouth coming to Rodney Parade tonight gives us a great opportunity to examine an old programme and look back at what’s widely regarded as one of the best games to have ever taken place at our old Somerton Park ground.
Len also brings news of a new signing in Peter Howey; a 21-year-old who had “Lost his way a little bit,” and also of a knock to winger Kevin Moore that had kept him side-lined, although the magical Moore was now back after missing the previous two matches.
However, our 2-0 win at Fratton Park had been followed up with an identical loss at Doncaster Rovers; so, evidence then of a little slump in their form that saw them arrive in Wales occupying second spot.
CHRIS SHINGLER
I t was the delicious filling in an enthralling Ironsides/ Pompey sandwich; a triple-header of matches in just under a month as the FA Cup draw had also paired the two clubs. The three games were watched by an aggregate just shy of 47,000 fans, with County doing a league double and Pompey ending our Wemb ley dreams, during that epic 1979/80 season.
Another familiar face pictured a page or so on is Steve Aizlewood, who of course was brought up within a good defender’s hoofed clearance from our former home ground and still often watched us in action when he could.
So, the fireworks came a day late this November in 1979, as County completed the league double with a tremendous 4-3 win in front of 7,115 wildly excited fans.

Most fans who watched us back then will recall most of Keith’s goals for us as headers from set pieces, I’m sure, but there is a photo with this article of him driving home the winner in that Wigan game from the edge of the box!
In ‘Inside Somerton,’ Richard Shepherd’s round-up of all the latest news from around the club, Howard’s catastrophic injury was again mentioned, likewise the response from Pompey getting praised via “Thank yous” to their staff, ambulance men and the medical team at the Queen Alexandria hospital in Cosham.
Indeed, our former Peterborough defender was joint top-scorer with six goals, along-side the now injured Goddard.Mindyou, there was a young lad by the name of John Aldridge who already had netted five times in just seven starts!Inthe article, Keith looked back on his time with us so far and recalled breaking his arm in his ninth County start, during a match against Rochdale the previous season.
Howard, by all accounts had even received cards and letters of good wishes from “Fratton Enders” who had also sent along a gift to our stricken striker.
As mentioned, Pompey pipped us on November the 24th, 1-0 at Fratton Park in the cup, and the two sides were to play each other regularly over the next few years in the Third Division.
Both clubs of course were eventually promoted, with us going up in third place to Portsmouth’s fourth spot.
Pompey (As printed): Peter Mellor, John McLaughlin, Archie Styles, Terry Brisley, Steve Aizlewood, Peter Ellis, Colin Garwood, Joe Laidlaw, Jeff Hemmerman, Steve Bryant and Ian Purdie.
The scoring, I believe, went 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3 and finally 4-3 in your archetypal “ding dong” battle!
Teams:County:Gary Plumley, Richard Walden, John Relish, Grant Davies, Keith Oakes, Neil Bailey, Nigel Vaughan, Steve Lowndes, Tommy Tynan, John Aldridge, Kevin Moore. Sub: Dave Bruton (Oakes).
ager of our neighbours Cardiff City.
Nevertheless, his form at the start of this campaign had been magnificent and, given the way we were playing, Keith was confident of our chances in this quick-fire return match mentioning that even when in our last home match, when visiting Wigan had taken a two-goal lead, he wasn’t too worried and knew we would win when Tommy Tynan pulled a goal back not long after the Latic’s second.
Elsewhere, good wishes were sent out to a group of fans who had been injured in an accident on the way home from Fratton Park in David Lewis, Roy Fairclough, John Lavender and Terry Lloyd. The player featured in the ‘Spotlight’ was our captain and still regarded by older supporters as our finest cen tre-back, Keith Oakes. Which was rather fitting as Keith was on the scoresheet in this match with a thunderous header that I can still see flying into the Railway End net.
If tonight’s Carabo Cup tie reaches anywhere near the heights of Tuesday the 6th of November 1979, we will be in for a rare treat!
As well as Keith’s goal, Tynan nabbed a brace, including the winner, and Aldridge also a vital strike as white-hot Somerton reached fever pitch!
There was also a round-up of news from the previous week’s Rod Jones Testimonial fixture, one that saw Derby County bring a strong squad to Somerton to honour our former part-time hero.
Over the page, funnily enough, is a snap of Tynan’s second in that Latic’s match with Tommy coolly slotting home to make it 2-2 from close range.

A fter our victory in the first round against Champion ship Luton Town, it was nice to be drawn at home in this round. I often hear and read that there is no money attached to this competition, like there is with the FA Cup. Well, that is not strictly correct. The competition is a really important source of revenue for the EFL. Whilst there is not any direct prize money in the early rounds of the competition, each of the 72 EFL clubs benefit significantly through their basic award that they receive from the EFL each month. This award derives a significant contribution from the sponsorship of this competition. Hope that helps put the record straight.
Aaron Wildig and Robbie Willmott enjoyed a special day at a Barnardo’s Life Beyond Caring event where young carers were given a voice and celebrated for the great work they do, often very much unnoticed, in OUR community.
The pre- match entertainment has, as always, a full programme before today’s game. We have the fantastic County in the Community in the marquee entertaining our younger supporters with some exciting activities as well as The Welsh Sweet Company and R & N Inflatables.
Finally, I must mention the atmosphere on Saturday, which was terrific. The noise generated really did help the players get the result everyone wanted. The manager, staff and the players really do value the support from everyone. So please do keep that noise coming. Enjoy the game!
Good luck to James and lads this evening. Gavin

Turning to today’s game
The club were very conscious of having 3 consecutive home games in a short period of time coupled with the cost-of-living challenges, As a result we have priced the game accordingly. It is important when we are able to do so we take a considered approach of the ever-changing climate. At times there is not a great deal of flexibility with ticket pricing so when the opportunity arises its important, we try and reach a balance. Well done to James and the team on the home win Saturday. It was nice to get that win at home.
A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Portsmouth FC for this evening’s home game in the Carabao Cup.
Our guests as charity of the evening tonight are Bar nardo’s Cymru. Our club and Barnardo’s have a close relationship and we are thrilled to have some of their representatives here at Rodney Parade tonight. Last week

For many of the team, this will be their first trip to Rodney Parade to see the Exiles in action this season. Welcome and enjoy the game!
There will be a special video from Barnardo’s on the big screen at half-time and you can find out more about their work at www.barnardos.org.uk/wales. Welcome and keep up the great work.

Welcome … F or our third home match in eight days, we welcome Danny Cowley’s PORTSMOUTH to Rodney Parade who make their second visit to South Wales in the Carabao Cup following their 3-0 win at Cardiff City two weeks ago.
… Season
This evening’s visitors are not the first club to represent the island city, with that honour belonging to Royal Artillery Portsmouth FC, who were FA Amateur Cup runners up in 1895-96. Unfortunately, ‘Royal ’lost its standing three years later after being suspended by the Football Association for violating their amateur status by taking players away for a week’s special training before an Amateur Cup-tie. Portsmouth FC were formed in 1898 at the offices of local solicitor Alderman JE Pink, who gathered together a group of football enthusiasts to buy a patch of land in Fratton. Said ‘patch’ has been home to ‘Pompey’ever since. Twice Football League champions, Blues’ first title success came a few months after they defeated County 3-2 in an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Fratton Park in February 1949. Away supporters boarded eight special trains more in hope than expectation as County, third from bottom of Division 3 (South), faced South Coast opponents unbeaten at home for 14 months. Incredibly, Newport took their illustrious hosts to extra time, though that would have been averted had Eddie Carr’s 75th minute ‘goal’ not been disallowed in the most bizarre of offside decisions. The home side’s winner came five minutes from the end of extra time, as future County boss Jimmy Scoular set up the opening for England international Jack Froggatt to score. The last League Cup meeting between Newport and Portsmouth came in the 1977-78 campaign, with ‘Blues’ edging out County 5-4 on aggregate. Ironsides’ 3-2 second leg win at Somerton Park, 45 years ago this month, was overshadowed somewhat in newspaper dead lines by the death earlier in the day of the King of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, at the age of 42. Portsmouth have reached the Fifth Round of the competition on five occasions, including its inaugural year in 1960-61, when they lost to Rotherham United in the quarter finals.

PAST MANAGER … Newport-born TONY PULIS left Bristol City to manage this evening’s visitors in January 2000. However, despite guiding Blues from the bot tom three to mid-table, the former Bristol Rovers and County midfielder, who made 89 appearances for his hometown club between 1984 and 1986, was replaced by Steve Claridge after 10 months. At the time of his appointment, chairman Milan Mandaric said:‘Pulis strikes me as someone who is tireless, dynamic and achieves things the old-fashioned way, through hard work. I want the kind of guy with the Portsmouth

According to ‘The News’, former Braintree Town, Lincoln City and Huddersfield Town boss Cowley was locked in lengthy talks with U’s Director of Football Ben Strang following the game, with the attacking duo offering the versatility and adaptability that the Blues’ boss seeks. Eleven players have arrived this summer, including former County loanee Joe Pigott on a similar arrangement from Ipswich Town, with Cowley explaining to ‘The News’
Pompey have spent £11.5million on upgrades, though in the event of promotion to the Championship, the CEO says the capacity of the ground, which hosted its first match in 1899, is likely to be increased: ‘If we can create the demand through the club progressing through the leagues or by more seats being sold - we can start to consider the next stage of development. That would begin with a much bigger North Stand, meaning a capacity of over 25,000. Depending on different models, it could be as high as 30,000.’
MANAGER’S VIEW … Danny Cowley with his thoughts on the League Cup victory at Cardiff two weeks ago. ‘It was a really good evening for us after making the number of changes we did against a Championship club. That level of performance bodes well and shows the depth of our squad – we wouldnot have been able to do that last season. There were five players in the starting 11 who are aged 21 or under and that is great for the future of this football club.’
‘We would like to bring in an eighth attacking player, that would be really important to us. We have to see if that is possible. We want them to be like an iPhone 13. When we were young, you used to have a Walkman, a camera and a phone. Now you get an iPhone 13. So I want an iPhone 13 - one who can do a bit of everything!’
FAN’S VIEW … Supporter Brendon Boneassessing Pompey’s progress and prospects with ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine: ‘This season is our sixth running in League One. It is the Cowley brothers’ third transfer window and more serious questions will be asked if they fail this time. There is genuine hope that we might sustain a promotion push. We have got Marlon Park back this season, which is brilliant as he can smash midfields in League One but our most underrated player is Joe Morrell, our World Cup-bound Welsh midfielder. If we can get him firing, he will take the league by storm. We will finish in the play-offs. Anything less is a failure.’
Patient Pigott Danny Cowley has spoken highly on the club website of striker, Joe Pigott, who was on target in the 3-0 First Round victory over Cardiff City two weeks ago. The 28-year-old, who scored three goals in 10 games for County in 2014, arrived on a season-long loan from League One rivals Ipswich Town earlier this month, but has had to bide his time at Fratton Park thus far, returningto the bench for last week’s 4-1 League One win over Cambridge United: ’We have a player who is really hungry - he loves football and was starved of that a bit last season. He hasn’t moaned, hasn’t whinged and came on and made a difference for us.There are a lot of unselfish boys who are willing to put the team first here. That gives us a real collective strength.’
TheDEFENDERPompey academy graduate signed his first professional deal with the club just before Christmas2019. Right back or centreback Haji, born in Portsmouth, is a rare Tanzanian in the EFL with three full caps after representing England at U17 level. He has spent time away from Frat ton Park on loan to Bognor Regis, Bromley and Weymouth where he played 22 games in the National League last season.
