F ollowing on from Tuesday, everyone was disappointed, and it was a result that definitely stung after all the hard work we’d put in to pull ourselves back into the game. However, Tuesday reaffirmed one thing to me and that was that we have a group of players who will give their all each game and have the grit and determination to never give up.

I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for our second home game in a row.

I’ve said recently that I’d be more worried if we weren’t playing well and aside from perhaps the first 45 minutes on Tuesday, I feel as though we’ve not been far away at any point this season. Today will prove to be another competitive game. I want to welcome Mickey Mellon, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Tranmere Rovers and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade.

Chairman: Gavin Foxall Directors: Bob Herrin, Joe Crocker, Kevin Ward, Mark Crook, Mike Everett, Paul Marks, Peter Madigan, Shaun Johnson.

Honorary Club President: David Hando Manager: James Rowberry

The fact that we were able to put ourselves in a position from two-nil down to where it probably felt most likely that we would be the team to come away with three points was something that really pleased me.

We have been waiting for today since Tuesday night and we have been desperate to get back out on the pitch and rectify the recent results. I really believe in what we are doing here, and I know the players, staff and club do too. We haven’t been far away in any games this season and if we can just tighten up in a few areas I know that the results will come. I said it post-match on Tuesday, and I want to say it again, the fans were fantastic on Tuesday night and the support you gave the boys throughout the game really drove us on and especially once we were two-nil down, the way you stuck behind the lads really gave us a platform to build from and helped us fight back to 2-2. I hope you can come back in your numbers today, with more of that fantastic support and atmosphere, and once again drive us on to a positive performance.

Assistant Manager: Carl Serrant First Team Coach: Jarred Harvey Goalkeeping Coach: James Hollman Senior Physiotherapist: Tom Gittoes

Welcome to Tranmere Rovers for today’s encounter here at Rodney Parade and we can once again retrieve an old programme from the loft to pore over, but this one is not for the faint hearted regarding us home fans. I t was the old Newport County’s penultimate home game as a Football League outfit and it took place on Saturday 30th April 1988 at our old Somerton Park ground. The‘Amberscene’ would have cost the hardy fan a shiny fifty-pence piece as he, or she, plodded down Cromwell or Somerton Road ready to witness another nail being driven into the club’s coffin, this time cour tesyof the men from the Wirral lead by John King.

FROMAMBERTHE

Several of their players are well remembered in the likes of goalkeepers Eric Nixon and Billy O’Rourke, who had a very brief trial with us in the Len Ashurst era, striker-turned-defender Ronnie Moore, as well as big Jim Steel who was in their attack.

Must admit, I strangely have no recollection of 25goal man Ian Muir however.

CHRIS SHINGLER

Things don’t get much lighterhere in truth, as the first item is one confirming that our 0-6 hammering at Bolton Wanderers has indeed made our relegation into the GM Vauxhall Conference a mathematical certainty.

Hmmm, perhaps it’s best to turn the page at this point where we find Ray Taylor’s‘Inside Somerton.’

A lot of it centres around talks of a takeover, but also gives details of people getting in touch with fundraising ideas as well as offers of help that sadly included several hoaxes, including one from a patient in a “Wiltshire Psychiatric Hospital.”

The chap featured on the cover was Anthony Hopkins - no not that one! -but a Cwmbran-born midfielder who made just two league appearances in that troubled campaign. In ‘From the Boardroom’ Maurice Salway gives us the full rundown of a press statement that was released on the 22ndof April, and it makes 12 points about the dire situation of the time.

News also that former Ironside, John Aldridge, also rather well known to our visitors today of course, had bumped into our team at a hotel where his beloved Liverpool side had also been staying, on that Bolton trip.Programme editor Ray also gives fair warning that our Amberscene issue for our final league match verses Rochdale would be a special edition and would be double the size, costing £1.

It’s unfortunately a tale of woe with thumping’s at Cambridge and Tranmere (both 0-4), Stockport (1-5), Wrexham (1-4), plus Torquay and Bolton (1-6 & 0-6 respectively).Theseaway

defeats were in fine company being coupled with 0-4 drubbings at home to Peterborough and Scarborough, not forgetting an embarrassing Welsh Cup exit at home to the West Walians of parttime Haverfordwest County (2-4)!

However, to balance things out a little, we had knocked promoted Cardiff City out of the League Cup on aggregate by a score of 4-3 with both matches being played at Ninian Park and had also won 2-1 at the Vetch against Swansea City; one of only six league

Overleaf, we have a near two-page look at Tranmere.

The double paged ‘When, Where, Who?’ continues the grim theme by making for desperate reading.

However, always the pragmatist, Ray manages to find a glimmer of hope in that the match signalled the return to action of central-defender Darren Peacock, who went onto bigger things with QPR, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.

Subs: Eddie Murray, Gary Williams.

The diminutive Nigel Vaughan had scored both goals - one from the spot - and it was the start of our 10-match winning run that set up our last day promo tion party at Walsall. We do learn though that both goals had an element of luck involved and referee Peter Willis (the first ref to send a player off in a Wembley FA Cup final–one Kevin Moran of Manchester United) was centre of attention again as he gave a soft penalty for a foul by Rovers’ custodian Dickie Johnson on that man Aldridge. Adding insult to injury, no flag was raised against Nigel when by all accounts he was yards offside for hisWesecond.certainly weren’t complaining, mind! One last bit of evidence of just how difficult the season had been is served when you look at the ‘Appearances & Goals’ chart.

Tranmere (as printed): Eric Nixon, Dave Higgins, Mark McCarrick, Dave Martindale, Ronnie Moore, Steve Vickers, John Morrissey, Jimmy Harvey, Jim Steel, Ian Muir, Steve Mungall.

County: Paul Bradshaw, David Abbruzzese, Darren Peacock, Kevin Hamer, Richard Jones, Steve Tupling, Glynne Millet, Andy Thackeray, Richard Thompson, Robbie Taylor, Sean Bennett.

Forty players had been used and nearly half already bore a cross next to them denoting they had left the club. However, when you look at some of the players we had at one time orother that season, there are some decent names with the likes of Paul Bodin, Paul Bradshaw, Phil Brignull, Wally Downes, Roger Gibbins, Simeon Hodson, Richard Jones, John Lewis, Darren Peacock, Paul Sugrue, Andy Thackeray and SteveNevertheless,Tupling.

wins all Wallaceseason.Brown was along to kick-start the backend of the issue with ‘4 Sight’and Wallace, a future Newport AFC chairman, reported on the other clubs in Division Four and noted that Steve Bull had notched up 48 league and cup goals so far for Wolves who, unsurpris ingly, were top of the league and had attracted over 30,000 fans to their last two home fixtures!

it wasn’t to be and in this match Rov ers eased to a comfortable 3-0 win in front of 1,110 die-hard souls. For the record, we finished in 24thplace with 24 points, with our visitors in a comfortable 14th with 64 on the board.

Far happier times are remembered in ‘Look Back in Amber’and namely our 2-0 win at Prenton Park during our promotion season of 1979/80.

Subs: Norman Parselle, Anthony Hopkins (Thackeray).

Wallace also points out that a John Thomas treble for Bolton was the thirteenth time an opposition play er had netted a hat-trick against us, these included future Manchester United star Lee Sharpe recently for Torquay, too. Mike Everett is up next with ‘Supporters’ Club News’ and mentions that despite the heavy loss at Bolton, the small band of fans who had made the trip on the official coach had enjoyed a “Highly entertaining night at Manchester City FC Social Club” and makes mention that one of our fans, Lorraine Cording had to assist a magician with a guillotine trick! On a more serious note, Mike reported that despite the torrid time we had faced on the pitch, the Support ers’ Club committee felt it was important to maintain continuity and have a player-of-the-year vote. In ‘Amber Angle’ Amanda Bolt takes a look at 19-year-old former YTS player Ryan Preece, who was tragically killed in 1996 in an incident at a sewage pumping station near Swansea. Briton Ferry-born Ryan played in seven Football League matches scoring twice against Wrexham and Carlisle United. A former Welsh youth international, Ryan had said a high point (despite a 0-4 result) was playing Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in a League Cup tie. “One min ute I was playing in the Welsh League at Panteg and the next I was playing against a top Second Division side. ” It was indeed and boasted among others, Ian Wright and Mark Bright.

• To improve care and support for people with MND, their families and carers.

• To fund and promote research that leads to new understanding and treatments and brings us closer to a cure for MND.

Finally, welcome to Thierry Nevers who has joined on loan from West Ham United. I am sure the Amber Army will give Thierry a warm welcome.

t’s been a busy week behind the scenes with multiple issues ongoing. We are busy preparing for our Carabao cup game with Portsmouth next week; the launch of our third shirt is in its final planning stage – more news on that soon; Aaron Wildig and Robbie Willmott attended a young carers event; EFL launched their Equality, Di versity and Inclusion strategy with Director Kevin Ward and Kelly Anderson attending the launch – we will be playing our part in implementing the strategy building on the work already undertaken. Finally, we welcomed a group walking in support of inclusion in Football who started at Wrexham FC, visiting Shrewsbury FC, Newport County AFC, Cardiff City and then finishing at Swansea City, Again, I have to regrettably write about incidents of coin throwing at our game on Tuesday night. It is really disappointing, but I am pleased that supporters played a part identifying the culprits. They have now been banned from the stadium and are subject to the authority’s in vestigation. We need all supporters to play their part in identifying incidents of this kind as we do not want these individuals tarnishing our good name. Turning to today’s game Our club of the day is Newport Saints, offering football to the community of Newport from Age 6 to Seniors. The club has a 5-year plan and aims to become an established Ardal Southern Tier 4 team offering a clear pathway into senior football for the youth players. Like a lot of grassroots clubs, the backbone is volunteers who are committed to the success of the club. Through these volunteers the club has built great local partnerships with businesses ensuring funds are re-invested back into the club making football accessible to all irrelevant of their background. Welcome and enjoy the day. Our charity of the day today is the Southeast Wales Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association who are a local charity that fundraises to help support people with MND and their families, within the region.

• To campaign and raise awareness so the needs of people with MND and everyone who cares for them are recognised and addressed by wider society. Please pop in the marquee and see them pre-match. The pre- match entertainment has a full programme before today’s game. We have the fantastic County in the Community in the marquee entertaining our younger supporters with some exciting activities as well as The Welsh Sweet Company selling their American candy and drinks. Newport City Radio will be hosting the pre-match warm-up with player interviews.

RICHARD TAYLOR INTRODUCING TRANMERE ROVERS

This afternoon’s visitors came into being as Belmont FC in 1884 as an offshoot of the established cricket club bearing that name. With a Tranmere Rugby Club already existing, the round ball newcomers took the name of Tranmere Rovers a year later at the instigation of club president James Hannay McGaul, who felt that it would attract wider support from the area’s 35,000 inhabitants. In the late 19th century, Tranmere was the second most populous settlement on the Wirral, although it was soon to become absorbed into the County Borough of FounderBirkenhead.membersof Division 3 (North) in 1921, Rovers were the best supported club in that section in 1935-36, with an average attendance of 8872.

Previous Name: Belmont FC (1894-95). Ground: Prenton Park, Prenton Road West, Birkenhead, Merseyside CH42 9PY.

One theory attributes Tranmere’s traditional blue kit to the riverside location of Birkenhead. However, upon taking the managerial reins in 1961, legendary Dundee born boss Dave Russell, who served the club for eight years as manager and nine years as general manager, swiftly changed the playing strip to all white, explaining ‘as Liverpool are red and Everton are blue, then Tranmere should be white.’ Apart from a five-season spell in the 1980s, white has been the main shirt colour ever since.

Record Appearances: Harold Bell, 633 (1946-64).

ROVERS TODAY … Friday football It is a case of back to the future again this season, as Rovers are once more planning on a few Friday evening fixtures. The idea was originally the brainchild of manager Dave Russell and the board of directors in the 1960s to avoid fixture clashes with the Merseyside clubs and became a staple feature of Rovers’ fans’ footballing diet for the next decade or so. Next month’s visit of neighbours Stockport County marks this season’s first Friday fixture, while Crewe Alexandra and Harrogate will also now make the trip to Birkenhead a day earlier than scheduled.

PAST MANAGER … There are few names more synonymous with Tranmere Rovers than RONNIE MOORE, who enjoyed two spells as player and two as manager with this afternoon’s visitors. His first stint in the former role saw him converted to forward for the 1975-76 campaign by new boss John King and he responded in spectacular fashion, with 34 goals as Tranmere secured promotion to Division 3. He managed four-goal hauls on three separate occasions, including a 5-1 win over County at Somerton Park in early January 1976 as Jimmy Scoular’s managerial reign drew to its agonising close. He was back in these parts on a more permanent basis three years later at Cardiff City, though he found goals harder to come by at Ninian Park. His first spell in the Prenton Park hot seat came in 2006, though he had served as assistant to his former mentor John King for nine years from 1987 after a brief stint as temporary gaffer. He led Rovers to two top half League One berths before leaving for another of his former clubs, Rotherham United, in September 2009, only to find the allure of Birkenhead irresistible, rocking up again in March 2012, a year after his Millers departure. His second spell in the managerial hot seat brought successive mid table third tier finishes but ended in controversial fashion in March 2014 as the FA charged the Liverpudlian in relation to alleged multiple breaches of rules regarding betting on matches. His final role as a Football League manager was an altogether happier experience as he led Hartlepool United to their own ‘Great Escape’ in 2015, as they clawed back a 10-point deficit to escape the bottom two, eventually ensuring Football League survival in the penultimate game at the expense of, in the ultimate irony, Tranmere Rovers! Now 69, Moore recently spoke to ‘The Rotherham Advertiser’ about his dream of one more managerial role: ‘I would like one more chance as a manager because I am only 50 games short of a thousand. I had nearly 700 league games as a player and to get 1,000 as a manager would be great. It would take one good season really. I am still fit and I still know a player when I see one, but I don’t think that is going to come now’.

Key signing Rovers boosted their playing options earlier this month with the prized capture of central defender Jordan Turnbull on a two-year deal from League Two rivals Salford City. The 27-year-old, who helped Northampton Town to promotion from the fourth tier in 2020 and was part of last term’s League Two team of the season, told the club website: ‘I am over the moon; I am really excited to be here.I had a chat with the manager and he really opened my eyes as to how big of a club this is. I have played here a few times; I have seen the stadium with a great fan base. The training facilities and the infrastructure is fantastic too. This is a really ambitious club with a really exciting group of players so I am really excited about the project.’

FAN’S VIEW … Rovers supporterSam Robinsonoffering his views on his side’s prospects to ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine: ‘Last season was disappointing. We started well and finished up with the second-best defensive record in the division, but our lack of goals cost us. Our key player will be forward Kane Hemmings, but look out for Reece McAteer joining from Norwich after an impressive loan with Inverness. We have been crying out for a creative, goalscoring midfielder. The fans’ opinion of the gaffer Micky Mellon is good, if mixed. He still has the backing of most, but there is some clamour for him to take the handbrake off and show more attacking intent.’

RECENT RESULTS ……

MANAGER’S VIEW … Micky Mellon with his thoughts on close season transfer business and the season ahead. ‘We are pleased with the recruitment and we have done very well to get a lot of talent into the building, as the players have shown in training and in the games so far. There is a lot of quality out there. But we still want to be improving as a group and to get to know each other better. The early signs are very good, but these things take time.’
