JAMES ROWBERRY Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today’s game against Barrow. I extend my welcome to Mark Cooper and his staff. It’s great that you will all be back in the ground after two home games behind closed doors. We missed you here and your brilliant support at Scunthorpe and Leyton Orient was hugely appreciated by the whole group. Speaking of those two games, they were both well-fought 1-0 victories that were against teams hard to break down thanks to the management of two coaches who have been in the game a long time and who I have the utmost respect for. So I’m proud to get maximum points from two hard games. Barrow will pose a similar challenge this afternoon and, although they are not where they might not want to be in the table, we will need to be at our best to get the win today. Welcome back to Rodney Parade and enjoy the game. James

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler

All being well, we once again gather here at Rodney Parade after being excluded for the last two matches and warmly welcome Barrow FC and their hardy supporters, who have made the lengthy trip down the M6 and M5.

This afternoon, we look back to the 1964-65 season and our Cumbrian friends’ visit to Somerton Park on Saturday the 20th of February, through the pages of the 4d priced programme that was issued that day. The eight-page effort opened on page two with ‘Today’s Visitors’ and a look at their squad. Most of the nine players featured are either local lads or born “Oop North;” in fact, the most southern-based club mentioned in the pen pics that a player had played for by my reckoning was Notts County! On that same page we have a panel showing forthcoming matches where Rochdale and Bradford City were up next for our first XI in the English league, while Gwynfi were the next opponents lying in wait for our second string in the Welsh version. On page three, the obligatory ‘Editorial’ was taken up with some topical non- County gossip in the shape of the government’s announcement that the stadiums being used to host the 1966 World Cup in England were being given an improvement in their facilities ahead of the tournament, the winners of which escape me for now….

There is also a plug for a new “Wales Supporters’ Club” that was being set up by a chap from Llanelly (Llanelli) by the name of Mr A. Rowcliffe. It was intended to encourage more people to support the Welsh side and hoped that the enthusiasm generated could help Wales in their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Greece, in March in Cardiff. There may have been something in it mind as Wales won 4-1! In ‘Supporters’ Club C h a tte r ’ t h e re w e re nods towards “Grand Stopwatch” competition draw tickets, Car stickers (priced at 2d) and team photographs (9d), aswell as old programmes that were priced at 1d. Oh my,as a programme disciple myself I do wonder what absolute gems could have been picked up back then! The current membership of the club was 1,500 strong and Ron Jones was the gentleman to see to join or re-join.

Of course, no programme would be complete from this era without a cursory reminder that Bingo was held in the club every Wednesday evening. House! After the team line-ups lodged in the issue’s central berth, we come to the league table that was bang up to date and County found themselves in 14th position, with 31 points from 32games played. The Barrow boys were fairing less well however and found themselves down in 22nd spot with just 21 points gleaned from 34 matches. Top of the pile were Tranmere Rovers on 47 from 33, whilst bottom were Stockport County who had struggled toamass just 14 points but had only played 30 times. For the brave-hearted Cromwell End boys (and girls), there is an announcement of train times for our upcoming away clash at Millwall! For the record, it was a 4-0 defeat, which I’m pretty sure was celebrity broadcaster and partisan Lions’ fan Danny Baker’s first ever trip to the Den, taken as a young lad by his father. The inside-back page was where we found the players‘Appearances and Goals’ chart and eight players had appeared in over 30 league and cup games, with goalkeeper and record appearance holder for the Ironsides, Len Weare playing in a maximum 38. Leading scorer was Laurie Sheffield with 21 goals from 32 matches, while he was ably supported by Ken Morgan, the former Busby Babe and Munich survivor as well as being current player

Aaron Lewis’ uncle. Kenny had netted 14 in 36 for the record and finished on 20 from 50 starts. Back page was where we found the‘Results and Fixtures’and it showeda very mixed bag indeed, but we had reached the FA Cup Third Round where, after home wins over non-league Spalding United (5-3) and Mansfield Town (3-0), we then drew at Elm Park Reading (22), but alas slipped to a single goal defeat in the Somerton replay in front of a healthy 13,118 crowd. So, onto the game and a Ray Brennan strike in the first minute certainly gave our visitors a great start but they were pegged back nine minutes later when future Welsh cap Gil Reece equalised. Not content with scoring in the first minute once, Barrow repeated the trick in the first minute of the second half as well though Roy McCarthy! However, John “Polly” Rowlands got our second leveller of the afternoon just after the hour mark, and 2,057 fans had an entertaining few hours out for their shilling. We finished in 16th spot, while Barrow had to seek reelection finishing i n 2 1 s t p l a c e. Halifax Town and Lincoln City were the others sitting precariously on the trap door with, not surprisingly, the still bottomp l a c e d Sto c k p o r t . At the champagne end of the table, corks were popped at Brighton & Hove Albion, Millwall, York City and Oxford United, all of whom were promoted. Teams:

County: Len Weare, George Walters, John Frowen, John Rowland, Graham Rathbone, Len Hill, George Smith, Ken Morgan, Laurie Sheffield, Jackie Swindells, Gil Reece. Barrow:Lionel Duffin, Jimmy Nelson, Malcolm Edwards, David Worthington, Garbutt Richardson, Keith Eddy, Roy McCarthy, Bobbie Tait, Ray Brennan, Don Watson, Brian Pilkington.

View from the

boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Barrow to this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. I am delighted to welcome you all back to Rodney Parade today. It is so important on so many different fronts having fans back in the stadium. On the note of supporters and how important they are, many thanks to those that travelled to Scunthorpe taking advantage of the coaches the club provided. It was really pleasing to see the pictures and hear the many positive stories. The noise on the day certainly made a difference to the team. It was really enjoyable day. Then followed very quickly by our evening fixture in East London. Again, many thanks to those that made the journey on a cold Tuesday night. Another great victory with another clean sheet! We welcome two local clubs to today’s game, Llanyrafon AFC and Ysgol Griffithstown U8’s. I hope you all have an enjoyable day. The charity at today’s game is The Samaritans (116 123 free from any phone or 0330 094 5717 local call charges apply) #ExilesHereToListen. In addition, our friends at Newport City Radio will be providing the entertainment in the marquee before the game. NCR have recently become our official podcast partner and will be producing a podcast with officials and players of the club. I recently had the pleasure of

being invited on to the podcast with Ian, John, and Luke. It was really enjoyable, and I know the NCR team have a whole host of people lined up for the rest of the season. The work undertaken on a match day by NCR, County in the Community, our partners and not forgetting Joe Crocker (and most of his family 😊) was recently subject to the EFL “mystery shopper” Family Excellence scheme. The feedback was really positive, and we have managed to maintain our good rating which is tremendous. Well done all and thank you! There will be a minute’s applause before the start of today’s game to remember former player Lee Brown (Beaver) and lifelong supporter and sponsor Matthew Wulf. Our condolences and thoughts are with both families at this difficult time. Welcome to Rob Street who has joined the club this week on loan from Crystal Palace. I am sure the Amber Army will give him a warm welcome! Good luck to the lads this afternoon. Thanks for your support as always. Stay safe everyone. Gavin

www.kidscape.org.uk Kidscape are really pleased to have been invited to be at the home game against Swindon this weekend to mark the end of anti-bullying week, and to continue to send the message of One Kind Word which is the theme this year. Kidscape has been a charity partner with Newport County AFC since 2019 and we have delivered some of our training programmes to their coaching staff and we continue to be proud working with them. Founded in 1984, Kidscape are passionate about working with and supporting children and families who through no fault of their own, have been faced with bullying and the trauma felt when going through it, which can last for several years. Through our work, we have been fortunate to meet so many children who we have helped deal with negative behaviour and who have gained strength, confidence, and resilience after attending one of our ZAP workshops. The workshops are about having fun but throughout the workshops, we deliver a set of Kidscape tools which we share with children in learning how to deal with and manage conflict and behaviour that has negative connotations and teach them that responding in a negative way, only serves to escalate the problem. When bullied, children lose all sense of worth, value, confidence, feel lonely and isolated and the pandemic has heightened the sense of segregation as children are unsure where they fit into previous friendship groups and as a result, feel distant from friends. Kidscape also deliver online ZAP workshops, as well as face to face which gives families a diverse way in which they can engage in our workshops. I am pleased to say that we can return to delivering our Community ZAP full day workshops in Newport on Monday 21st February 2022, venue yet to be confirmed, that we would encourage families to access, free of charge.

The objectives of the Community ZAP workshops are:

• Raising self-esteem

• Exploring bullying roles • Assertiveness skills • Positive body language • Cyberbullying e run alongside the children workshop, a session for W parents which has the following objectives:

• Assertiveness training • Open discussion

• Understanding modelling behaviour • Support sources. If you feel your child would benefit from attending one of the Community ZAP workshops, please do get in touch. carole@kidscape.org.uk Please look at our website and get in touch if you want to access any of our training, and be part of the journey of Kidscape in Wales, as we are always welcome volunteers to support and help us deliver our message of hope and courage to all children and young people who have been bullied. We strive to make children feel wanted, loved, valued and be a part of the Kidscape family. The Kidscape Team

FOUNDATION PHASE & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PHASE As the penultimate week of January comes to end, we would like to share some of our stories from our Academy Schoolboy Programme (U9 – U16) from this month. Our Academy age groups have competed extremely well within fixtures against the likes of Cheltenham Town & Bristol City FC. Which is credit to the collective hard work of everyone involved in each player’s journey, from parents, to staff and of course the player themself. Our U15 age group has continued to represent the Football Club, Academy and themselves well within the U15 Floodlit Cup Competition, competing against the likes of Cardiff City & Swansea City, Plymouth Argyle & Exeter City FC. Recently our U9’s & U10’s were extremely lucky to have the opportunity to support our first team in their behind closed doors, 4-0 win against Harrogate. Our Academy players came in as ball boys, they did an fantastic job and were fortunate enough to meet some of the players (picture left). Ryan Morley (FDP Lead) & Bobby-McKenzie Black (YDP Lead)

The Academy scholars had a special visitor last week as Kevin Ellison popped in to work with the group. Kevin is currently undertaking his coaching badges and it was brilliant for the players to learn from his experience on the day.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

BLUEBIRDS’ LAST 10 SEASONS …

04 Dec:

Ipswich Town (FA Cup Round 2)

11 Dec:

IN THE BEGINNING …

With thousands flocking to Barrow in the 1880s for employment in the iron and subsequently steel industry, the demand for organised football grew. A football club was established around that time on the site of the current Furness Cricket Club, though by 1894 it appears to have disbanded. With more and more people arriving from nearby Scotland, interest in football continued to grow, with local publican, Mr Hinds chairing a meeting at the town’s Drill Hall in 1901, resulting in the formation of the present club.. With limited opportunity locally, Barrow joined the Lancashire League and initially attracted crowds of between three and four thousand to their then Strawberry Ground home. After a couple of other ‘ground hops’, they settled at Holker Street eight years later and have remained ever since, becoming founder members of Division 3 (North) in 1921.

Barrow’s sole promotion as a Football League club came in 196667, when Don McEvoy’s side, containing the likes of goalkeeper Fred Else, defender and record appearance holder Brian Arrowsmith and 18-goal striker Jim Mulholland, finished third in Division 4. Our visitors confirmed promotion with a 1-0 victory at Somerton Park on the penultimate day of the season, a repeat of the score line in Cumbria seven weeks earlier. Bluebirds achieved national fame on the opening day of the 1965-66 season, when Bobby Knox became the first substitute to score in the Football League as he netted in the 4-2 victory over Wrexham at the Racecourse.Three months later, the locally born player again made the headlines in the role of ‘super sub’ as he replaced injured goalkeeper Lionel Duffin and saved a penalty at Doncaster Rovers, as goals from Keith Eddy and Keith Hartland secured a battling 2-1 victory in South Yorkshire.

Dallas businessman Paul Casson completed a takeover at Holker Street in May 2014, and the Bluebirds won the Conference North title the following season. Within months, manager Darren Edmondson was dismissed after a mediocre start to the 2015-16 campaign, and subsequent bosses Paul Cox, Micky Moore and Ady Pennock also lost their jobs as the American targeted a Football League return for the club who lost that cherished status in 1972. Casson sold the club in October 2018, though his last managerial appointment, current Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt, delivered the coveted prize as Barrow led the National League for the vast majority of the Covid-curtailed 2019-20 campaign, ending 48 years of hurt as the final league table was decided on a points-per-game basis.

DON’T MENTION •

he 1971-72 campaign. Barrow may have applied for re-election T on 11 occasions, one more than County, though they felt hard done by on losing their Division 4 status, as both Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra finished below them in the table! The conspiracy theorists felt that Bluebirds’ remote Cumbrian location went against them in the Football League’s AGM at Lancaster Gate, plus there was a desire to accommodate media darlings Hereford United following their Ronnie Radford inspired FA Cup heroics against Newcastle United. arrow’s nickname may not win them too many fans in this part B of the world, though more mature fans of our visitors will think it preferable to its alternative. In the late 1960s, club mascot Jimmy Caldwell and friends manufactuired a ‘Zigger’, essentially a stuffed army kit bag painted blue and white. The group paraded their creation pitch side for several seasons prior to Barrow’s demise as a Football Leaguie outfit, encouraging the chant: ‘Zigger-Zagger-Zigger-Zagger-Oi-Oi-Oi’. Older fans have never quite forgiven the Zigger, which is presumably burioed deep within a Cumbrian rubbish tip! arrow’s first season in the Northern Premier League in 1972-73 B saw them attract a crowd of just 143 for a home fixture with South Liverpool. However, those dark days paled into insignificance compared to the chaos of ther late 1990s, when a liquidator was appointed because of the club’s debts accrued under a previous regime. Despite finishing outside of the Conference relegation zone, Bluebirds were demoted to the Northern Premier League where they remained for the next five years.

BLUEBIRDS’ TODAY

Wetherby Road return? Barrow went into Tuesday’s home clash with Salford City two places and seven points ahead of Scunthorpe United. Three days earlier, Mark Cooper’s side lost 3-1 to in-form Mansfield Town at Holker Street, despite the Stags playing 51 minutes with 10 men following the first half dismissal of defender Farrend Rawson. However, there is some cause for cheer in Cumbria with the decision of midfielder Ollie Banks to commit his long-term future to the club. Bluebirds’ 10-goal top scorer penned a new two-and-a-half year contract with our visitors having arrived from Tranmere Rovers in January 2021, and told the club’s You Tube channel: ‘I am delighted. The season we have had has been positive in a lot of ways. Results have not always gone to plan, but we have seen that we can put in some really good performances. I struggled without fans last season as I love playing in front of a crowd. Football is nothing without fans as we have seen. There are a great bunch of lads here too, and everyone is pulling in the same direction. Hopefully, we can show that results wise this next part of the season.’

MANAGER’S VIEW

Mark Cooperhoping for a positive end to the campaign. ‘I have said to our players this week that if we can win three or four on the trot then we will be looking at an entirely different end to the season. Of course, we want to make sure we get enough points that we are not involved in a scrap at the end, so if we can do that early then different things can open up. That is what we have to be looking at – we have to test ourselves and we have to believe. I think we play better against the better opposition; we seem to rise to the occasion.’

FANS’ VIEWS

A quick peak at ‘www.barrowafc.net’, Bluebirds’ unofficial fans’ forum, with thanks to the posters named. ‘It is not that long ago that we put in a tremendous second half performance to beat Newport, capped off with a fantastic strike from Josh Gordon. All was looking very promising at that stage. How did we slip from that sort of performance?’ ‘pjdaly’ getting nostalgic for that September Saturday in Cumbria that proved to be Michael Flynn’s last game in charge at County. ‘Courtney Baker-Richardson has put Newport ahead at Scunthorpe.’ ‘SKIPPER’ keeping tabs on former Bluebird Courtney, who spent last term at Holker Street, ‘With a 2-1 lead and with 10 men, Mansfield decided to sit back, give us all the possession and see what Barrow had to offer. Nothing, as it turned out! We were devoid of ideas in the final third.’ SayitagainSam’ commenting on the Harrogate travelling support at Luton Town last weekend.

MEET THE HEAD COACH

MARK COOPER

One of our most regular adversaries in recent years, Mark has been in charge at Holker Street since May last year. Until the previous month he was in charge at Forest Green Rovers for just short of five years, a very unusual length of tenure at this level of football. Mark was in charge of Darlington when County visited for the first game after our return to the Conference in 2010. More recently, as well as with Forest Green he was here with Notts County during a brief spell as manager at the end of 2015-16 and in charge of Swindon Town when they won on penalties here in the EFL Trophy early in the same campaign. The son of Leeds and England left back Terry Cooper and father of former County loanee Charlie, Mark made more than 400 appearances as a midfielder in the 1990s, taking in clubs including Exeter City, Birmingham City and Fulham and a long career outside the Football League. Among other clubs he played for Forest Green and Tamworth, where he made the jump into management in 2004. His later CV includes managing Darlington to an FA Trophy win at Wembley in 2011.
