Firstly, I want to pass on my thoughts to Her late Majesty after her passing late last week. On behalf of all at Newport County, I thank her for her years of service and reiterate our appreciation for her diligence and endeavour during her reign.
Chairman: Gavin Foxall
I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for today’s EFL League Two fixture against Barrow.
Following on from your great support at Stevenage on Tuesday, it’s good to be back at Rodney Parade and hopefully we can get another good atmosphere which definitely pushes us on in important moments. You can be a real driver to myself and the lads on the pitch when you create the great atmosphere you do so often.

Today will prove to be another competitive game. Barrow have started really well this season and are coming here off the back of another really positive result on Tuesday night, so we will have to be sharp and focused in our minds and in our play if we want to be successful against a team who will be full of confidence. On that note, I want to welcome Pete Wild, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Barrow and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade.
Supporter Liaison Officer: Donna Linton
With Saturday’s fixture at Swindon postponed out of respect for Her late Majesty, we travelled to Stevenage on Tuesday having not played since Grimsby Town the Saturday previous. We were all disappointed leaving Hertfordshire on Tuesday night especially after handling Stevenage’s threats pretty well first half and restricting them to half chances without really having a shot at our goal. Unfortunately, the first time we didn’t deal with them in the way we should have, we were punished and from then on it was always going to be much harder to get a positive result from the game. They will be a strong side at home this season and I think we did well first half and could even have gone in at half time a goal ahead. The moment when they took the lead is just another demonstration that we have to be right in everything we do at all moments of the game or teams can punish you.

I do want to say a huge thank you again to the fans who made the long journey on a Tuesday night to support us.

Back we go again in time, to review an old programme against this afternoon’s opponents and that today of course is Barrow, whom we welcome warmly to Wales…
T
he issue we are looking at was from an 11thof Sep tember 1965 clash that saw a 3-2 County win and was in fact our first home success of that season. Opening up for us on page two of the 6d-priced, eightpage ‘Official Programme’ are the ‘Pen Pictures ’of Barrow and I must confess, right now, that none of the players spring out from my old memory However, bank.Inote Larry Carberry at right-back had played “Regularly” for Ipswich Town in their championship season, while on the other flank left-back Malcolm Ed wards was born in Wrexham and had served Tranmere Rovers, Chester and Bolton Wanderers. Edinburgh-born inside-right Robert Tait had been last season’s top scor er with 14 strikes from 45 matches.Pagethree gives us details of the fixtures between the two clubs from that‘64/65 campaign and we had been
tary Fred Beare is up next with his ‘Editorial’ column and poses the question:“Will we be treated to our first home win of the season today?”He laments the op position in our last two home games scoring late equalisers to steal a share of the two points on offer in Rochdale’s case (1-1) or by forcing a replay in the Southend League Cup tie that ended 2-2.

We had duly lost the League Cup replay in Essex against the Shrimpers by three goals to one and didn’t fare much better in the FA Cup later in the year either, when we meekly bowed out 0-2 to non-league Bath City
County: Len Weare, John Frowen, John Bird, Malcolm Cook, Graham Rathbone, John Rowland, Ken Morgan, David Pugh, Graham Reynolds, Len Hill and David Jones.

For the record, we had ended the 1964/65 season in 16th spot with Barrow having to apply for re-election by virtue of a 21st place finish.
finish come late May wasn’t to be sniffed at during these austere times, I guess, and Barrow also enjoyed an improved 12th place finish.
er interesting snippet was a letter he had received from an exiled County supporter, a Mr. B. John, formerly of Cwmbran who now resided in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
That busy chap Fred Beare happens along again next with ‘Supporters’ Club Chatter’ and, as usual at this time of the year, there were calls for fans to renew their memberships. Some 1,551 had joined up the previous season and a call also went out for agents to sell tickets for the new “Ironsides Sweep” where for six old pennies you could win up to £300 every week. No mean sum back then. Lastly, it was hoped that the 1966 Club diaries would be in stock in time for this Barrow clash priced at 1/- each.
Forthcomingdefeat.fixtures to look forward to over the next week included a Monday night visit of Torquay United, who we also overcame 3-2 in front of a 3,814 crowd, and the following Saturday our Welsh League Premier side were hosting Llanelly.
Former Busby Babe and Munich air crash survivor, Kenny, also netted our consolation at Kenilworth Road, Luton in a 1-2
Leading Newport County scorer was Waterford-born Alfie Hale, the Irishman notching 24 goals in League and FA Cup with Morgan hitting a mean 20, including one in the Welsh Cup where Swansea Town had ended our interest early (2-3) at home.
The penultimate page was a neat roundup of the County teams from three recent matches; our scorer in that Rochdale match had been Graham Reynolds, with the former Hartridge teacher also netting alongside Ken Morgan in the drawn Southend cup tie.
After the teams printed out in all their splendour upon the middle pages, we have the league table from the pre vious season; a hark back to the past when tables weren’t always published until well into September, usually after teams had played maybe the best part of ten matches.
at Twerton However,Park.aninth-place
The back page was gobbled up by the obligatory ‘Fixtures & Results’ section.
Mr. John, who by Fred’s reckoning was the most distant fully paid-up member of the Supporters’ Club wrote not only to wish County luck for the season ahead, but also to comment on the fact that every player on the books of Port Elizabeth City F.C. was British born. It transpires that agents in the UK had been most successful in recruiting players from here to go out to South Africa to play. He names some of these, including Andy Malcolm formally of West Ham United and Chelsea, ex Manchester United player George Spires, and also George Scott a formerly of Leeds United and Chesterfield.
Teams as printed:
That man Morgan was on target again against the Bluebirds of Barrow in this 3-2 win with David Pugh and Reynolds also scoring. A satisfied 2,741 had watched on maybe a few clutching their new Club Diaries.

and as always, the support is much appreciated.
veryone at the club was truly saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96. Over a 70-year reign, Her Majesty served the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with distinction. The thoughts of everybody at the club are with the Royal Family at this sad time. Today we pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II with a minute’s applause.
I recently attended a meeting with the EFL exploring how Football can play a part in the current challenges associated with the cost-of-living crisis. There are several options being considered as part of the wider Government strategy in this area. Football plays an important part in the society, and this is recognised by Government as well as the Football Family. As always, as a community owned club, we will play our part. As a business we are not exempt from the challenges being encountered by businesses and families, and supporters will recall we priced our season tickets to reflect the environment. As a responsible business we will continue to ensure we are acutely aware of the rapidly challenging environment. More on this very soon.
Our Charity of the Day is The Samaritans. Every 10 seconds, Samaritans responds to a call for help. No judgement. No pressure. They are there for anyone who needs someone. As the cost-of-living crisis leaves people struggling the Samaritans can offer support to those who are struggling to cope. Please pop in the marquee prematch and have a chat to them and see what fantastic and valuable work they do in our local community and wider. You can find out more about their work and also how to support them via a donation at www.samaritans.org. Good luck to James and lads this afternoon.

Many thanks to those supporters who travelled to Stevenage in the week. They were a credit to the club
Today we welcome our Junior Trust members – Clwb Spytty and TeenExiles – as our Guard of Honour. The jun ior packages that the Newport County AFC Supporters’ Trust offer are great value at only £15 per season where the members would get two free games per season as well as an opportunity to become a match-day mascot and take part in the Guard of Honour. There are other excellent benefits of being a member and more details can be found at www.ncafctrust.org or by speaking to our volunteers in the marquee pre-match. Membership forms are also available in our club shops. Enjoy the experience and game today.
On Sunday I will attend a service of commemoration for Her late Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II at Newport Cathedral on behalf of the club.

The weekly session is delivered in the heart of the community making use of Ringland Playing Fields. The session takes place every Friday including half terms. CitC have chosen a Friday as previous work has shown young people will come in their numbers on a Friday and are usually out a little later as the weekend is approaching. Young people have told us that they want the provision on a Friday night, and it has shown with the amount of engagement in the area until now.
County in the Community are delighted to be delivering Premier League Kicks in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner in Ringland.
For the regular attendees, there will also be opportunity within the programme to travel to different areas of the United Kingdom and participate in competitions. The impact of regular attendance will also see young people progress to volunteering, educational opportunities, placements, and employment opportunities where possible.

Barnardo’s Cymru believes that every child deserves a happy and healthy childhood, no matter who they are or what they have been through. We work with vulnerable children, young people, families, and communities across Wales, helping them to build a better future.
Around 1 in 3 children in the UK are now living in poverty and we continue to support families across Wales with advice and support such as food vouchers and specialist support through our partnership with Citizen’s Advice. Following Newport County from 1912 to the late 1980s was never for the faint-hearted but supporting this afternoon’s visitors was arguably even tougher! In over 50 years of Football League membership up to 1972, the Cumbrian Bluebirds achieved just one promotion, to Division 3 in 1968, just 12 top half finishes and applied for re-election on 11 occasions. County, in comparison, managed to survive three applications for re-election between 1969 and 1971, with the unfortunate Barrow harshly voted out of the Football League in place of Hereford United in 1972 after a second successive application, despite Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra finishing below them in the Division 4 table.

A football club was first established in Barrow-in-Furness in the early 1880s as thousands flocked to the town, many from Scotland, in search of employment in the iron and later steel industry. Unfortu nately, the initial club, despite the backing of a Tartan Army, seem to have ceased trading by the mid 1890s and in 1901, local publican Mr Hinds chaired a meeting for interested parties in the town’s Drill Hall to form a successor. The Scottish influence was again strong, and the fledgling outfit soon attracted crowds of three and four thousand for home fixtures in the Lancashire League. They moved to Holker Street in 1909 and, despite their Cumbrian location, remained in the more competitive Lancashire Leagues prior to joining Division 3 (North) as founder members in 1921.

Barrow-in-Furness born BRIAN ARROWSMITH is the ultimate Bluebirds legend, having spent his entire professional career at his hometown team, holding the record for club appearances – 512 – and serving as player-manager during the 1974-75 season. Predominantly a right-back, he captained Barrow to Fourth Division promotion in 1966-67, featuring in his side’s two 1-0 victories over Billy Lucas’ County that season. He left Holker Street four years later for Netherfield but returned in 1974 to the then Northern Premier League side as play er-manager. Barrow had struggled to adapt to non-league football following their controversial failure to gain re-election in 1972,despite finishing two of the foot of the Fourth Division, and hoped that the return of their popular defender would rekindle playing fortunes. Unfortunately, the then 35-year-old could only emulate the previous campaign’s 22nd place finish and resigned a few months into the 1975-76 season. Ever the club man, Arrowsmith remained as a player for a further three years before opening up a DIY shop in his home town and attending matches as a supporter. His son Mark played for the club briefly in the 1980s, while in 2017 the main stand at Holker Street was renamed ‘The Brian Arrowsmith Stand’. Sadly, the Bluebirds icon never saw his beloved team back in the Football League, passing away in hospital of Covid-19 on Easter Sunday 2020, aged 79.

‘There is a massive opportunity to do something exciting here. I said it the other week, but the work that lies ahead really enthuses me, so hopefully we can get the foundations in place as quickly as possible. I am going to give this club everything I have got.’

Pete stepped aside when Paul Scholes was appointed but within weeks was handed the reins temporarily once more when Scholes quit in March 2019. He was appointed substantively, but only until the end of the season, and left Oldham that May.
