The support at both games was fantastic once again and I can only thank you all again for travelling in the numbers you do and reiterate how much it means to myself, the players and the club that you consistently provide us with such great away support even on the furthest of trips.
Quickly after the high of Tuesday we suffered disappointment at Bradford City on Saturday and it was a result that definitely had us all disappointed. We had positive moments and it was certainly an even game but overall it was a difficult result and one that the boys and I are itching to put right, starting with this evening.

We are back at home tonight after a week of contrasting emotions following two away trips.
We also have a new member of the squad who most of you may see for the first time this evening so please give Nathan Moriah-Welsh a warm welcome after he’s joined us on loan from AFC Bournemouth for this campaign.

Following two away games in a week, we are delighted to be back at Rodney Parade tonight and I hope that we can really pack out the stadium for the first evening fixture of the season here at Rodney Parade, I felt as though we made Rodney Parade a really intimidating place to come on evening games last season so let’s try and continue in that this year! Get behind the boys and enjoy the game.
I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for our first home Tuesday evening fixture of the new season.
Firstly, I thought the boys showed fantastic effort, desire and quality to head to the home of a Championship team who only just fell a little short of promotion to the Premier League last season and managed to come away with the win and a place in the second round of the Carabao Cup. It was a great result and one I’m really proud of. Hopefully we can create a great atmosphere for the upcoming home tie against Portsmouth and once again aim for a positive performance.

NEWPORTADDRESSCOUNTY AFC RODNEY PARADE RODNEY ROAD,
Rod was quite simply one of the most popular postwar players to have pulled on our shirt and was to a lot of County fans, including myself, our very first bona fide footballing hero. He played over 270 football league matches, and 323 in total, scoring 71 times; figures made even more impressive when you remember he was only ever a part-time player, often splitting his time between striker and centre-back and only training twice a week! County fans on the terraces and in the stands loved his rough and ready style; fully committed, he always gave 100% every game whether it was a crunch league match or a friendly. No oppositiongoalkeeper was entirely safe from a leading shoulder as they went for a high cross or corner, and indeed, more than a few ended up in a sorry heap on those muddy 1970s fields that masqueraded as football pitches. Goodness knows how long he would have lasted today without a yellow or red card being brandished in his direction!
It was with great sadness that the club and fans, especially those old enough to have witnessed him play, learned of the passing of Roddy Jones late last season.
I t was with great sadness that the club and fans, especially those old enough to have witnessed him play, learned of the passing of Roddy Jones late last season.
CHRIS SHINGLER ROD JONES
Rhiwderin born in 1946, standing 5’11” and weighing 12 stone, Rod worked as a Maintenance Fitter at the Alcan factoryin Rogerstone and also had a brief spell at sea with P&O. He first played senior football across our then town at Rexville, when he signed for Lovell’s Athletic for the 1968/69 season. Sadly, as it happens, it was their last ever season before they were disbanded in the summer of ’69. Tenacious as a tiger, as fierce as alion, Roddy was swiftly snapped up as an amateur by the grateful Ironsides and, by 1971, he had two welsh amateur caps to his name. An incredibly affable character off the pitch, Rod explained back in 2006 to Andrew Taylor in his“Look Back in Amber” book that he was going to sign for Caerleon after the turnstiles shut forever at Lovell’s, but a meeting with our then player-manager Bobby Fer guson significantly changed all that. Rod explained:“I went over the County training and Ferguson asked me to sign and play in the Welsh League team.”However, by January 1970, Rod made his football league debut in a 1-1 draw at Colchester United. He remembered how excited he was to be sitting in the away dressing room next to our legendary custodian, Len Weare: “He was a hero of mine! You can imagine how excited I was!”Asure sign of things to come developed in that first outing as Rod recalled how the home ‘keeper Gra ham Smith was yelling at the ref to “Get this nutter off the field” after Rod had left his customary welcome imprinted upon him, and he also claims a hand in our goal that day at Layer Road, as …“I put the wind up their centre-half and he volleyed the ball past his ownComekeeper!”season’s end, he had nine league appear ances in the bank, together with one goal that had

Many fans and former team-mates paid their respects.Long-time supporter Phil Harding wrote: “Rod was my first hero. Met him at the Hall of Fame evening and found out what a great bloke he was, loved talking about his time at County with him.”
Former midfielder Neil Bailey recalled the great man was in the side in which he made his County debut, against Wimbledon, and called him “A lovely man.”
Another big name to cross the warrior’s path was then Chelsea manager Dave Sexton during our heroic 2-4 league cup defeat at Stamford Bridge, in September 1974. “I gave Micky Droy and Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris a real battering that night and Dave Sexton came up to me afterwards saying … Well played Son.”
Roddy admitted that as he got older, he thought playing as a defender was easier for him and was still a regular choice under a procession of County managers that included Billy Lucas, Brian Harris, Dave Elliott, Jimmy Scoular and Colin Addison, but, as they say, all good things eventually come to an end and for Rod, that was the arrival of Len Ashurst. He recalled: “He didn’t like part timers, and I was extremely sad about it. ” Rod by now was 32 and was disappointed not to be a part of the success that was just around the corner for the Ironsides but joined Barry Town and had four good seasons with them. However, the Jones/County love story still wasn’t over yet as, during his second spell in charge, Newport boss Addison rang our cult hero out of the blue one day at the grand age of 36 to see if he wanted to return as a player-coach alongside John Macey, for our reserve team that graced the Welsh League.
Rest in peace Rod, and as former Newport AFC director Martin Greenham said … “A true County legend.”
come in a3-1 home win over Chester in mid-March. The following term he amassed 30 starts in league and cup with another three as substitute and netted an impressive 10 goals in a very difficult season for the club. One of those strikes was our scant consolation goal in a humiliating 1-6 FA Cup defeat at non-league Barnet, a record for a non-league vs. league club at the time. Nevertheless, as Rod remembered …“It got better after Ferguson was sacked and after the FA Cup debacle.” However, he did credit Ferguson in helping him become a football league player. He did lose his place in the side the following season after arranging to marry his sweetheart, Anne early on a Saturday morning with the intention of playing in the afternoon, but, alas, the wedding was delayed and …“I had to miss the game! We beat Bury 2-1 and it was quite a few months before I got back in the side.”
We won 5-1 with Roddy notching the fifth just for goodAftermeasure!thematch, he couldn’t help seeking out the future Liverpool and Ireland star and telling him …“You’ve had it now Ollie, I’m back for good!”
Perhaps another ex -teammate summed Rod up to perfection, however, when Wynne Hooper comment ed:“Very sad news, a very good player who had the heart of a lion. It was a privilege to play alongside him.”
Rod also had a great goal chalked off in that game when Willie had been flagged offside and, as Rod recalled … “It would have been allowed today as he was out on the wing not interfering.”
For Rod it was a no brainer: “I told him I’d love to! ”He even added another appearance at first team level when he deputised for John Aldridge in a Welsh Cup tie with Bridgend at Somerton Park.

Mike Powell, he was his hero and recalled many a Tuesday and Thursday night training session at Somer ton Park while another legend in amber, John Relish said …“Roddy was as tough as nails, would rather have him in my team than play against him. Off the field he was great company and had an infectious laugh.”
Roddy had not been in the best of health, sadly, for a few years but it was still a big shock when news of his death became known.
One of Roddy’s most treasured moments was scor ing both our goals in a 2-1 friendly win over Fulham and coming up against former England international Alan Mullery. “I remember going up to Mullery at the end of the match and shaking his hand and saying it was an honour to play on the same pitch as him.”
Rod finally left the club when he could see the writ ing on the wall with the finances and management all going a tad haywire; he recalled how sad he felt when his beloved club finally went under in 1989.
Another long-time fan, Mikey Desmond added:“ Definitely a 100% player and a great guy, a real hero to many of a certain age.” Brin Summerhill noted:“Roddy was the personification of Newport County, a real fight er and never accepted defeat without a proper battle.”
Rod, when eventually back in the side, started to form a potent partnership with Scottish striker Willie Brown and in the near miss 1972/73 season, they plundered nearly 40 goals between them. Rod as ever was quick to praise others and remembered that Willie “Worked his socks off.”
View From The Boardroom
It is a fantastic achievement in this day and age. Those that know Mickey will undoubtedly be aware that he and his family are very much part of the furniture at Rodney Parade. He has been terrific for the club both on and off the field. Our best wishes go to Mickey and his family on reaching such a milestone.
Sadly, we had a number of unsavoury incidents at our home game with Walsall. With the help of supporters and our colleagues at Rodney Parade we have issued a stadium banning order to one individual. It was really disappointing to have to be dealing with such things. We absolutely recognise we are talking about a minority who for whatever reason want to come and cause problems at our club. They are not welcome, and we will act according ly against those who appear intent on tarnishing the good name of the club. The vast majority of our supporters act in a supportive manner, and we ask that if you do witness behaviour that is not right, please do let a steward know. We have a responsibility to all our supporters to ensure Rodney Parade is a safe and welcoming environment. We are committed to achieving that and your help in that goal is much appreciated. Turning to today’s game Our club of the night is the Tredegar Park Wolfpack. The Wolfpack are just about to start their first full season with the FAW with two under 11s teams and an under 13s team. The Wolfpack pride themselves on being family orientated, hence the reason why they have grown so much in the last year with a brand-new team. The club receive many positive comments and support from the side-lines and have the motto, “For the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack.”
The charity of the night is Newport Veterans - please see their e-programme article to read about the fantastic work they do for Armed Forces veterans and their families in our local area.
I t was great to see the ground packed for the Walsall game and our thanks to all those that made the long trip to Bradford on Saturday. The support is much appreciated by everyone.
Tonight, our partners at Newport City Radio are holding a bucket collection to help them purchase some new equipment to keep the community-based radio going strong. Newport City Radio provide the warm-up in the FanZone marquee at each home game for us and provide local musicians a stage to play on. Don’t forget they are also our official PodCast partners with their enjoyable and informative ‘Look Back In Amber’ sessions. If you see the fabulous Newport City Radio team with their buckets, please do give generously. Thanks to all the 2180 supporters who purchased a season ticket for the 22/23 season. That is the highest amount we have ever sold and our thanks to everyone for the continued Congratulationssupport.toMickey Demetriou who played his 250th game for the club against Walsall last Saturday.
A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Salford City for this evening’s home game of the 22/23 season.
Welcome to Nathan Moriah-Welsh who joined on loan from AFC Bournemouth. Good luck to James and lads this evening. Gavin

The club’s first ‘golden era’ came in the 1970s when, as Salford Amateurs, theywon the Lancashire Amateur Cup three times and the Manchester Premier Cup twice. In 1980 ‘Ammies’ merged with Anson Villa, who had finished bottom of the Cheshire County League Second Division,to become Salford FC, adding the City suffix nine years later.
2021-22
In the summer of 2014, the consortium of former Manchester Unit ed players known as the ‘Class of ‘92’ - Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary and Phil Neville – assumedcontrol of City in conjunction with billionaire Singaporean businessman and majority shareholder Peter Lim, owner of La Liga high fliers Valencia CF. The former players said they wanted to put something back into the game in an area where they had themselves learned their trade. Four-and-a-half years later, David Beckham joined the Salford project, with the ex-United stars each owning 10% of shares and the 69-year-old business magnate, entrepreneur, philanthropist and investor owning 40%. The new owners swiftly changed City’s traditional tangerine and black playing kit to the red and white synonymous with Manchester United. However, Ammies had briefly experimented with red and white in the early 1980s, while for a few campaigns at the start of the millennium, the historical football kits website lists Salford as wearing various combinations of blue and white.

ANTHONY JOHNSON and BERNARD MORLEY were synonymous with the Salford City project in the early years of the new era at the
Record Defeat: 1-7 v St Helens Town, FA Cup Prelim inary Round, September 2001.
PAST MANAGER …
This evening’s visitors came into being in 1940 as Salford Central Mission, taking their namefrom an iconic local landmark. As well as serving asa non-conformist church, the enormous building also hosted an orchestra, junior rugby league team, a drama society and a Boys’ Brigade before its eventual demolition as part of the Salford Quays redevelopment in 2010. In 1947 the club apparently severed its relationship with the mission and became Salford Central FC.
The following season, Johnson and Morley led their charges to a famous victoryover League Two Notts County in the FA Cup First Round as City, complete with the Manchester United connection, became regulars on national television, reaching the National League North in 2016-17, the highest position in their 76-year history. The managerial duo celebrated a century of games in charge in November 2016 with a 3-0 victory over Worcester City, signing new two-year contracts five months later as the club finalised plans to go full-time. Salford secured promotion to the National League as National North champions with one game of the season still to go, though in May 2017, a club statement announced that Johnson and Morley had left by mutual consent, citing irreconcilable differences regarding performance and contract length.
Current Motherwell boss Graham Alexander was appointed new manager, with Johnson and Morley next surfacing at Chester, where they remained for three years prior to their departure nine months ago after winning just four of their opening 15 National League North fixtures. Now in charge of Spennymoor Town, who they led to a 10th place finish in the same league last term, the duo are unlikely to enjoy the same level of media spotlight as their time in charge at the Peninsula Stadium. However, with Morley back in the dug-out alongside his co-manager following a few medical issues in the spring, it could be a lively season for Spennymoor!
MANAGER’S VIEW … NeilWood replaced Gary Bowyer in the Ammies hot seat three months ago and the former Manchester United Under-23 coach spoke recently about his philosophy and vision for the future of Salford City. ‘I am really excited for the challenge. I think it is going to be really good going forward. I like my teams to attack. I hope people will say we are a well-coached team. I like to improve players and improve the team. I aim for us to be hard to beat. I think it is important to get home grown players and young players into the team, my career so far has been getting the best out of young players. It is important for them to know that there is a clear pathway and platform for them if they perform well and train well and I think fans will identify with those players. We now have to create a culture of everyone pulling in the same direction as that is important for the club. We want the fans to be proud of this club and what they are watching.’

He later scored twice in 23 games for Barnsley, moving to Doncaster Rovers before rejoining former Tykes boss Daniel Stendel in France at Nancy.
FAN’S VIEW … Ammies fan Andy Thurston in positive mood talking to ‘FourFourT wo’ magazine in the publication’s ‘Season Preview’ edition. ‘Last season was frustrating. We had a slow start but were in with a chance of making the play-offs right up until the final game of the season. The big talking point (at the end) was the sacking of Gary Bowyer as manager. The fanbase was pretty split on him leaving and many thought he had more to give. But the fans’ opinion of the new gaffer is positive so far. Giving the opportunity to a young upand-coming manager in former Manchester United academy boss Neil Wood, is refreshing. I think we will finish third.’
Simões is clearly excited at the next stop in a so far nomadic career and is hoping to settle at his new home, telling the club website: ‘First of all it has been very nice meeting the lads, I have felt welcomed and everyone has been really nice to me, showing me around. I am just happy and ready to get going!I would say I am a very direct player, I like to just run at players, one-against-one, dribbling, get on the half turn, so hopefully looking to get some goals and assists to help the team.I have known of Salford; I have livedin Manchester and I have always looked at Salford games. I looked at the pre-season games and I liked the way Salford try to play football.I am looking forward to working with the manager. I think we will get along and he will get the best out of me.’
