2021-2022 EDITORIAL
Editor Fred Albert falbert@newportri.com Market Editor Rebecca Chace Food Editor Andrea E. McHugh
IN THE WAKE OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, Newport is both a changed city and still very much the same. Returning visitors might notice some adjustments in the way that stores and restaurants do business. Some of our attractions have closed temporarily or are operating on a revised schedule. And a few of the events that gave our City by the Sea its gilt-edged glamour are on hiatus while we wait for things to return to normal. But rest assured, the major attractions are still very much with us, from the sun-kissed shores dotted with sailboats to the marble-clad mansions and restaurant menus brimming with treasures from the sea. Whether you came for the culture, the coastline or the cocktails, Newport is happy to see you and is eager to make your stay as pleasurable as possible. This guidebook was assembled by the staff of Newport Life magazine, where our motto is “Helping you make the most of your Newport life.” For those of you picking up this guidebook as you pass through town, let me amend that to, “Helping you make the most of your Newport visit.” We hope it proves to be a memorable one.

A BRIEF HISTORY
of Newport
Perched at the southern tip of Aquidneck Island as it extends into Narragansett Bay, Newport has long been blessed with a stellar setting and storied past. But the Colonial landmarks and Gilded-Age mansions only tell part of the city’s rich and complex history.
1639
Newport was founded in 1639 by English settlers fleeing Boston in search of religious freedom. Many of those first settlers were Baptists who embraced the separation of church and state and wrote those principles into the town statutes.

The town became home to some of the most skilled craftsmen in the colonies, but it was trade that really fueled Newport’s economic growth. Boats loaded with rum, fish, candles, silver, furniture and other goods set sail from Newport’s harbor — many a part of the infamous “triangle trade” responsible for bringing slaves to America.

Those egalitarian precepts drew others, most notably Quakers and Jews, who arrived in the 1650s and helped transform the sleepy agricultural community into one of Colonial America’s most prominent seaports.
1776
By the mid-18th century, Newport’s prosperity had prompted a building boom, along with a fervor for independence from the British. But the British pushed back, taking over the city in 1776 and occupying it for the next three years as half the population fled. By the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, Newport’s economy was in tatters.
1815-1860
During the Antebellum period, Newport began its transformation into a summer resort and a center for influential writers, artists and intellectuals.
1865-1900
During the Gilded Age that followed the end of the Civil War, an increasing number of wealthy families built mansions in Newport. Their presence also spurred an interest in boating that continues to this day. Around this same time, the U.S. Navy began to develop a significant presence, eventually leading to the establishment of the Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Naval Station Newport and other divisions.
1970s
Gannett archive photos Top right: Jessica Pohl
When the naval fleet departed in 1973, Newport was forced to reinvent itself yet again. Building on the burgeoning historic preservation movement and a revitalized downtown, the city’s mansions were opened to the public, and tourism became a major driver in Newport’s economy, drawing millions of visitors each year thanks to the region’s scenic beauty, iconic architecture and abundant attractions.
1901-1962
The Navy played an increasing role in the life and livelihood of Newport — especially around the first and second World Wars — culminating in the decision to locate the Cruiser-Destroyer Force of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet here in 1962. NewportVisitorsGuide.com

MIDTOWN OYSTER BAR
Specialties OF THE HOUSE By Andrea E. McHugh
W
hen longtime eatery Tucker’s Bistro closed its doors on Broadway and Malt opened in the same location, the restaurant’s owners felt compelled to continue serving their legendary THAI SHRIMP NACHOS. This appetizer is known for its light-as-air wonton crisps drizzled with a creamy coconut sauce boasting hints of red curry. You’ll call dibs on the last few bites. For a more traditional starter that’s a twist on a New England favorite, try the SCALLOP CHOWDER from The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar. This longtime fan favorite took top honors at Newport’s Great Chowder Cook-Off many times over. The creamy creation pairs beautifully with the restaurant’s CHOPPED SALAD, which is anything but basic, with fingerling potatoes, sunflower seeds, a smattering of feta cheese and house-made ranch dressing. Over at Brick Alley Pub, arguably Newport’s most well-known restaurant with more than three decades at its Thames Street perch, locals and return visitors alike utter these same three words: AHI TUNA SLIDERS. First, this dish gets points for presentation: Pan-seared slices of rare ahi tuna, served chilled and crusted in pepper and herbs, rest side by side on a bed of crispy wontons. Three dots of wasabi grace the rectangular plate, flanked by dainty ramekins of soy sauce and pickled ginger. You can’t go wrong

— just make a reservation, because a wait is common at “BAP.” Down on Lower Thames Street you’ll find the towering Midtown Oyster Bar, which as the name implies, serves myriad varieties of the meaty mollusks (many from Rhode Island waters). But one of its best small plates is the CHAR-GRILLED OCTOPUS. These tantalizing tentacles (typically there are two) are prepared with a dry spice rub, grilled and served atop a citrusy chickpea salad. Landlubbers looking for a hearty snack should make their way to Wharf Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar on Bowen’s Wharf. Though famous for their fried chicken and

waffles, crawfish hushpuppies and other Southern indulgences, it’s their tater tots that pour out of the kitchen on any given night. You can go all out and enjoy them with pork belly and Guinness cheese sauce, or try tots smothered in country gravy and Creole spices. But you’ll be just as satisfied getting the CLASSIC TOTS, as they come with a twist on the standard condiments: rosemary ketchup and mustard aioli. they’ve left room for the restaurant’s STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING. The dessert, based on the same one Madonna served at her wedding to director Guy Ritchie, is served atop warm toffee sauce and house-made whipped cream. Meanwhile, down at Bouchard Restaurant & Inn, the GRAND MARNIER SOUFFLÉ is about as much of a culinary institution as the restaurant itself. Baked to perfection every time, its taut exterior hides a pillowy interior. Once it’s placed in front of you, your server (say “hi” to Dan!) will dramatically drench the puffy delight in Grand Marnier sauce. Pace yourself accordingly.

BRIDE OF CARLOS AND STANDARD MARGARITA FROM DIEGO’S
Broadway
Kick off your crawl in style at MALT (150 Broadway), where the bartenders can educate you on the varieties of scotch and whiskey available. Next door is NOREY’S (156 Broadway), where you can choose from over 100 beer and cider options. Just a few steps away is SALVATION CAFE (140 Broadway). Their authentic, seasonal mojito bar will quench your thirst on a hot summer day. Farther south on Broadway, you’ll find another cluster of watering holes. THE FASTNET PUB (1 Broadway) brings a taste of Irish lore to the menu. (We highly recommend a pint of Guinness to take the place of dessert.) Across the street, saunter into POUR JUDGEMENT (32 Broadway), which offers another immense menu of both mainstream and craft beer selections. Before you leave the neighborhood, double back to THE FIFTH ELEMENT (111 Broadway) and try a Cooper Union, enjoying some live music and a great crowd while you savor this blend of Irish whiskey, St-Germain and orange bitters.

Downtown
Start out on the southern end of Thames Street at ZELDA’S (528 Thames St.), known locally as a hangout for sailors. Begin your trek with a Dark and Stormy, the yachtsman’s drink of choice. Venture up the street just a bit and visit O’BRIEN’S PUB (501 Thames St.) for a frozen Mudslide on the outdoor patio (weather permitting), a great spot to people-watch. Continue north on Thames Street until just before Memorial Boulevard. Plan to have a Dance with the Devil at MIDTOWN OYSTER BAR (345 Thames St.), which features several bars, including a rooftop deck. Just a few short steps away you can dive into the basement of the Newport Bay Club and sample the signature mai tai at SURF CLUB (337 Thames St.). Next, take a break at SMOKE HOUSE (31 Scott Wharf), open seasonally from the end of April through Columbus Day weekend. It’s another great spot to watch the world walk past. Continuing on America’s Cup Avenue, take a turn toward the ocean and join the crowd at DIEGO’S (11 Bowen’s Wharf). Whether you’re on the patio or inside the bar, the jalapeño-infused tequila in the Bride of Carlos will give you a little kick. No downtown pub crawl would be complete without a stop at BRICK ALLEY PUB (140 Thames St.), where by this point you might need some food. Order a huge plate of Ultimate Nachos and wash it down with a cold Narragansett lager.

OVER THE
Bridge By Bob Curley
When downtown Newport gets a little too intense, it’s good to know that respite can be found just a bridge away.
JAMESTOWN
Jamestown has a lot of the best attributes of Newport, minus the crowds: an attractive coastal village, beautiful beaches, lighthouses, historic sites, and an assortment of shops and restaurants. “A lot of people who don’t know about Jamestown stop here on their way to the Cape or Newport and say, ‘Wow, what a great spot,’” observes island resident Dianne Grippi. Narragansett Avenue is the heart of Jamestown, which is actually the name of the town, not the island (which is Conanicut, but rarely used). The deck at the Slice of Heaven cafe is the best spot in town for breakfast, Village Hearth Bakery & Cafe is beloved for its baked goods and soups, and Simpatico Jamestown is a magical experience for dinner when its leafy courtyard twinkles with fairy lights. Evenings can be capped at the

Narragansett Cafe, one of the best live-music venues in Rhode Island. Outside of town, quiet lanes lead south to the beaches and north to Watson Farm, where you can tour a bucolic 18th-century farm maintained by Historic New England. Nearby is the picturesque Jamestown Windmill, built in 1787. Warding mariners from the southern tip of the island is the Beavertail Lighthouse, the third-oldest in the U.S., set on a rocky point popular with fishermen. The ruins of Fort Wetherill, a former coastal defense battery, are also open for exploration. The seasonal Jamestown Newport Ferry allows easy transit between the two seaside communities without having to deal with traffic or parking hassles. “Jamestown is really accessible to everything,” Grippi says.

TIVERTON
There are two distinct faces to Tiverton: to the north, the town abuts the urban streets of Fall River, Massachusetts, and is home to the Tiverton Casino Hotel, with 1,000 video slot machines and 32 table games. The southern half of Tiverton is a rural coastal community where generations of locals have stopped at Evelyn’s Drive-In for clams and lobster rolls on summer nights, and families cool off on the shores of Fogland Beach and Grinnell’s Beach. Beyond the beach, there’s plenty to do outdoors in Tiverton, from hiking the 7 miles of trails in Weetamoo Woods to climbing the observation tower at the site of Fort Barton, a Revolutionary War redoubt. Closer to the shore is the small-but-beautiful Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge, an Audubon Society of Rhode Island preserve with trails along the Sakonnet River. Tiverton has more than clam shacks to tempt the palate: two fine-dining options include the waterfront Red Dory and the elegant Boat House. Four Corners, a charming country crossroads, is home to the venerable Gray’s Ice Cream, Groundswell Cafe + Bakery, and a variety of charming shops and galleries.

LITTLE COMPTON
RHODE ISLAND RED MONUMENT
It says something that the most popular destination in Little Compton is a vineyard. The southeasternmost town in Rhode Island remains largely a coastal agriculture area — a combination that’s increasingly rare. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards remains a mandatory stop for wine tasting, live music and small bites at the Bar and Board Bistro. But the real heart of the community is its archetypal New England commons, a green triangle bordered by the town hall, library, post office, general store and “front porch” restaurant, the Commons Lunch. The Old Commons Burial Ground includes the grave of Elizabeth Alden, thought to be the first white child born in New England. If you go to breakfast at the Barn Restaurant in the village of Adamsville, be sure to try the lobster Benedict and pay a visit to the statue of the Rhode Island Red rooster across the street — it’s the state bird. From Adamsville, it’s just a short drive to the shoreline, where you’ll find the peaceful South Shore Beach, Goosewing Beach Preserve, Sakonnet Point with its ca. 1884 lighthouse, and the hiking trails of Wilbour Woods. Little Compton has but one hotel, but it’s special. The Stone House, built in 1854, has 16 guest rooms and faces the ocean near Sakonnet Point. NewportVisitorsGuide.com
