TIPS & TRENDS

Four Silhouettes You Should Know Bridal trends come and go. But when it comes to bridal gowns, there are four hallmark silhouettes that never really change. Understanding those key silhouettes will give any bride more assurance when she shops.

he ball gown dress is ideal for virtually all body types, as the full tulle skirt flatters nearly all shapes and sizes. Whether you are a skinny legend, a curvy queen or something in-between, this princessy silhouette may be right for you. If a full tulle skirt isn't your thing, consider the A-line dress. Flattering for most brides, the A-line is fitted to the waist, allowing the fabric to flow effortlessly to the floor. Brides can add or eliminate sleeves, go strappy or strapless, or even add a train.

If you’re a bride who wants to celebrate her curves, the mermaid gown is probably the best choice for you. These dresses are fitted to the knee, then flare to the floor, making them ideal for hourglass figures. Last, but not least, is the sheath dress. This gown fits close to the body, making it superb for showing off one’s figure. If you’re a bride who doesn’t like flare, this gown is for you. It’s also a petite girl’s best friend. — N C W

PAYING A PRICE

for Happiness

LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS? MARRIAGE IS A GREAT START.

A recent survey of the British public found that 72 percent of respondents reported feeling happier in the months after tying the knot. Ironically, they also felt poorer: Almost half said they spent more money in the months after their nuptials than they did before the blessed event. But they were richer in other ways, with three in 10 saying they had expanded their circle of friends through their merger with their spouse, and from old friends coming out of the woodwork in the wake of their wedding. The takeaway? Before you pick out a ring, pick out a financial adviser. — F A 10

duBirdie is an online business that specializes in writing essays for college students. Now they’re branching out, offering to write wedding vows for tongue-tied brides and grooms. For around $18, their EduBridie division (note the subtle transposition of letters) will produce a speech for the bride, groom, maid of honor or best man that promises to “make wedding guests cry, laugh and gasp” and turn you into a YouTube sensation. While we’ve sat through a lot of wedding toasts that could have benefited from a ghostwriter, the wedding officiants we talked to were less enthusiastic about having an outsider write your vows. All of them offered the same advice: “Just speak from your heart, and you’ll do fine.” For more information, visit edubirdie.com/edubridie. — FA

FLOWERS

FLOWER

Power By Fred Albert

lowers are as much a part of a wedding as brides and grooms. But in recent years, the role of flowers has changed — in terms of their impact as a design statement, and their impact on the environment. “Clients are certainly more cautious about where flowers are coming from and how many flowers there are,” says florist Sayles Livingston of Sayles Livingston Design in Tiverton. As a result, many couples are shifting from blooms to greenery, thinking it’s more environmentally friendly — although in truth, Livingston points out, greens are no more sustainable than flowers. No cheaper, either. That hasn’t stopped couples from adopting an increasingly lush look, with greens and blossoms blanketing arbors, tables, chairs, and even the bride herself. “We get asked for wearables a lot,” says

18

NewportWeddingMagazine.com | 2020

Livingston. “It can be anything from a shawl of flowers to a hat of flowers to a necklace of flowers. We’ve done a ton of floral dresses — which is literally a dress made of flowers.” J e r i ly n G a g n o n o f J a s m i n e & Geranium in Newport has seen a boom in floral tattoos. Despite the name, they are not actual tattoos, but garlands that are affixed to the skin and travel across the top of the back and down one arm. Like floral crowns, they integrate flowers into the bride’s attire while leaving her hands free. Of course, bridal bouquets are still the most popular choice — although not necessarily in the size we’re accustomed to seeing. Most brides that Livingston encounters are opting for either very small bouquets or very large ones (again, with lots of greens), usually in palettes of green and white with a hint of blush. Flowers also figure prominently in the

wedding decor, starting with the arbor framing the couple during the ceremony. Here again, Livingston says the trend is to use more greens instead of flowers, and to make things really lush. That same approach can be seen at the reception, where “hanging installations” are taking florals to new heights — literally. Armatures are suspended from the ceiling and embroidered with masses of greenery, filling the void above the tables so the space feels more intimate and less commercial, and the floral display looks more cohesive. L i v i n g s to n s ay s t h a t h a n g i n g installations are part of a trend to have one floral showstopper at a wedding — whether it’s a wearable floral piece, a wall of flowers, or a knockout escort table display. Not only do they make a big impact, but they can save money, since you’re investing in just one impressive piece. When it comes to tabletops, Livingston

says more couples are opting for tall, lush centerpieces, or loose greenery that’s strewn atop the table and interspersed with candles. (Just don’t use scented candles, as they interfere with the taste and aroma of the food.) Then there’s the matter of what happens to the flowers after the wedding is over. “At midnight, you have to leave, and there’s $10,000 worth of flowers sitting on the floor,” Livingston says. “That’s a huge amount of waste.” In Newport, where many people travel to weddings on a trolley, it’s not always easy to carry a centerpiece home. That’s why Livingston recommends paying an additional fee to have the leftover blooms repurposed into floral arrangements for nursing homes, women’s shelters, and others in need. The few hundred dollars it costs is a small price to pay to make someone else’s day.

FOOD STATIONS INSPIRE A FREE-FLOWING, INTERACTIVE ATMOSPHERE.

A

s modern brides and grooms break free from the structure and tradition of weddings past, one portion of the celebration that’s stuck around and evolved is catered stations. Stations lend themselves to a variety of options, allow for a looser structure than a sitdown meal, and can serve as a way for the bride and groom to express their personalities through the selections. This is not your run-of-the-mill self-serve buffet we’re talking about, but rather an interactive dining experience. Interactive stations offer food as entertainment, allowing guests to ask questions like, “What grade sushi is that?” as they watch their spicy tuna roll being assembled. According to Barbara Behan Howlett, the owner of Glorious Affairs catering in Middletown, raw bar stations are a popular option in the Ocean State. Howlett says they often have a local oyster farmer behind the counter who can tell guests about the family farm while shucking. “They can get more educated in what they’re eating,” she says — a subject in which people are becoming increasingly more interested. “I wouldn’t even say it’s a trend; it’s here for good,” Howlett says. “It’s an important piece everyone wants to know: what am I putting in my body?” Stations also ensure that vegetarian cousins, gluten-free BFFs, and picky nieces and nephews can all find something suitable to eat, given the variety and options available. In addition, Howlett says, “the host or bride and groom can be a guest at their own party while they’re enjoying the stations.” With this format, structure can be thrown to the wind. Well, maybe not completely. You’ll want to hold onto that schedule. But it does allow guests to eat, mingle and dance at their own pace. “I find that at every event — whether it’s a cocktail party or especially wedding receptions — you have a window of time and it’s precious, and you need to utilize every moment,” Howlett says. In her 28 years in business, she notes, “I’ve never had someone regret the stations.” Glorious Affairs offers a wide variety of stations, from tacos to pad Thai, sushi, Southwest and New England, which includes lobster rolls and chowder. “It depends on the season, too,” Howlett says. “If you came [to me] in the winter, I would say, ‘Why not do a soup and salad station, or soup and grilled cheese?’” Blackstone Caterers in Middletown also offers a number of 2020 | Newport WeddingMagazine.com

stations which are interactive, in that wedding guests can select the proteins and toppings for their plate. For example, the caterer’s macaroni and cheese bar includes toppings like sautéed mushrooms, crumbled applewood-smoked bacon, diced tomato and more. The build-your-own ramen noodle bar allows guests to choose broth, proteins and toppings, as well. Blackstone also offers a carving station, seaside Rhode Island station and slider bars, among others. “We are very customized, so we love to execute them to the client’s vision,” says Karen Tungett, co-owner of Blackstone Caterers. Oftentimes, custom stations are inspired by the newlyweds’ home state, which is a fun way to showcase the couple’s personality, Tungett adds. “We also decorate stations beautifully with signage and props, such as lanterns and crates [that are] specific to the wedding décor,” she says. If you’re leaning toward the idea of stations, but don’t want to give up the structure or tradition of a sit-down dinner, there’s the option to do a little of both. “You don’t have to do a sit-down throughout the reception,” Howlett says. She suggests doing a first course and entrée while sitting, and then moving desserts and other things later on into the station format to get people up and moving. “I do find that most brides and grooms are looking for foods or atmosphere that’s much more comfortable and not as formal,” Howlett says. This concept stretches from the reception back to the rehearsal dinner. Howlett says that many couples are leaning toward welcome parties that include everyone — either in addition to or instead of a rehearsal dinner with just the bridal party. Stations can be a great fit there, too. Actually, when it comes right down to it, where don’t stations fit?

utting the cake together is a time-honored wedding tradition for couples. But in recent years, reception desserts have expanded into new territory: cupcakes, doughnuts, or multiple tables showcasing an assortment of sweets. While many still opt for the tried-and-true vanilla cake with buttercream frosting, some in-the-know couples have been choosing gemlike geode designs, rustic tree trunk styles, and even gravity-defying chandelier cakes, where the largest tier hovers on top and smaller layers are hung underneath it. The “rustic birch tree” look has been all the cake rage lately, according to Brittni Rea, who opened A Piece of Cake, her specialty cake studio, in Warwick four years ago. “Natural” looks incorporating real flowers and tree-inspired vibes have been highly in-demand, with some weddings choosing fall colors even in the height of summer. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Rea also receives tons of requests for sparkle and glitz. “Of course there’s some in-between, but everyone’s either going superglam or really, really rustic,” says Rea. She’s also seeing couples opting for more full cakes “to feed all the guests, rather than a small cake and cupcakes” — although multiple dessert tables are definitely still popular. received countless requests for multiple dessert tables during the height of the 2019 summer wedding season. She responded with an assortment of options, such as lemon or brownie squares, crème puffs and macarons, mini-cheesecakes and cinnamon buns — even strawberry shortcake and key lime pie shooters. Wingate says that geode cakes, whose split exteriors reveal a cache of simulated crystals, were more popular a couple of years ago — but she still receives some requests for them. She has fewer couples asking for chandelier cakes, but admits they certainly make an impression. They were inspired by the masterpiece that The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco commissioned for her wedding to Karl Cook last year — although hers hung under an actual chandelier. In terms of flavors, Wingate’s undisputed winner is her “Rosé

All Day” cake: a pink vanilla bean cake soaked in rosé sparkling wine with a strawberry cream cheese buttercream frosting. “A couple of years ago, I asked myself, ‘What do ladies like?’” Wingate recalls. “They like rosé. I’m gonna make that.” Of the 150 flavors that A Piece of Cake offers, Rea also cites pink champagne as “a super popular wedding choice,” along with lemon drop. But occasionally guests get creative: she recently made a wedding spread comprised of cupcakes flavored like strawberry éclairs, chocolate éclairs, strawberry shortcake, cookie dough and pancakes and bacon. For Rhode Island weddings, both lemon and coffee cake flavors are in-demand, too, thanks to Ocean State institutions like Del’s Lemonade and Autocrat coffee syrup. What’s up-and-coming for cakes? Rea is starting to see requests for very muted, “industrial” concrete or spacklelike textures, with colors like dusty rose or dark grays and a touch of gold. Wingate, meanwhile, will be separating cake tiers with clear plexiglass circle rounds, to make the layers appear as if they’re floating. It’s an experimental look she plans to debut at wedding shows in the coming year. Whether your cake dreams are more traditional or cuttingedge, local bakers will find a way to make them a reality. 2020 | Newport WeddingMagazine.com

h e n i t c o m e s to choosing a wedding dress, brides have to battle a sea of contradictions. There are differing opinions among family and friends, between bridesmaids, and in the fashion proclamations pouring from the pages of bridal magazines — not to mention the simple matters of fit and price. Where does a bride even begin? First things first: When choosing a gown, the wedding’s location, time of year, time of day, and the bride’s personality should all be primary considerations. Then there’s the issue of what kind of silhouette the bride prefers, and what cut works best for her body. (See our cheat sheet on the four basic gown types on page 10.) Beyond that, there are trends to consider. Lucia Aguiar of Lucia Aguiar Bride has noticed an increased interest in dresses that are light and easy to move in. She attributes this to Newport’s popularity as a wedding destination in the warmer months, and to the numerous receptions that are held outdoors. A lighter dress usually translates into something that is feminine and romantic. At the same time, Aguiar also emphasizes the creative streak in the brides she meets, many of whom are interested in princessstyle gowns, beading, different colors, daring costume jewelry and other bolder moves. Laura Zabbo of Spark Bridal Outlet notices a move to more traditionally inspired looks in her market viewings and her clientele. Seemingly everything she

previewed at market had a sheen or sequined layer beneath a sheer layer, which gave the gowns a bit of sparkle. Silver threading and silver beading also instilled a subtle shine. Most of the brides in her shop favor simplicity, with clean lines, plain white fabrics and simple accents. Brides are embracing the philosophy that less is more, Zabbo reports. She also predicts that the ruffled bottom — a trend that has moved in and out of popularity over the years — will enjoy a resurgence in the coming wedding season. Both boutiques noted that brides are taking an “all-or-nothing” approach to the bridal veil. Either they’re interested in long, traditional veils known as cathedral veils, or they’re not interested in veils at all. Aguiar and Zabbo noted that if classic veils are not worn, brides often choose to wear flowers such as baby’s breath in their hair, instead, for an ethereal look. Both women also noted the increasing popularity of lace in the coming year — but not necessarily the conventional lace one might expect. Look for floral and leaf patterns to overshadow more intricate, traditional designs. Shoes are becoming a n oth e r p o p u l a r m eth o d o f s e l f expression, even if the bride is wearing a traditional gown. Look for footwear in a variety of colors and patterns, as brides attempt to reveal a hint of their creative, artsy side, even within the context of a formal wedding. So what’s going out of style? Aquiar believes that classic strapless gowns are becoming a bit less popular as sleeved gowns gain a following. High-neck gowns and spaghetti-strap gowns both enjoyed a resurgence recently but are already beginning to fade. And while some simpler, lighter colors are retaining their popularity, deeper colors (including darker nudes) are bowing out gracefully after a few years of success. These days, brides are more focused on cleaner colors and the time-honored, irreplaceable white. Here’s the bottom line: While being chic is an admirable ambition, the best thing a bride can do is invest in something that makes her feel beautiful. And find a darn good tailor! 28

n the Newport County area, where humidity can be unforgiving and precipitation can show up like an uninvited guest any time of year, creating beautiful — and weather-defying — wedding hairstyles is an art best left to the professionals. Core styles like updos, down dos, half-up/down, buns and twists never really go away, but minor variations and tweaks can create a surprisingly dramatic difference in your overall look. Here’s what’s current and fresh in wedding hair design. The bohemian, tousled and loose hair-down look that’s so popular now is transitioning toward a more modern, unstructured style with plenty of texture. Similarly, the extremely coiffed buns and side-swept bangs of a few years ago are being replaced by top-to-bottom updos of large braids with plenty of pulled-out “loops” for texture, and pieces pulled out around the face for softness. Smaller adjustments can make a big impact, but can be tougher to describe. “It’s hard to say because it’s art,” says Kristen Moshiek, the owner of Salon Moshiek in Portsmouth. “Twists have always been in, so maybe it’s taking twists to a different look, with the hair half up and half down.” She’s seeing women with shorter hair wear their hair with a kind of whimsy, using the curling iron to pull the curls out and make them loose and beachy looking, with lots of middle parts and tousled curls.

Looser hairstyles are paired with jewelry (above), while pulled-out “loops” give large braids texture (left). SALON MOSHIEK. STEPHANIE VEGLIANTE PHOTOGRAPHY

Emily Leialoha, who is a manager a n d we d d i n g c o o rd i n a to r a t Natural Creations Salon in Newport, says that her clients run the gamut in terms of style requests. The loose, natural boho look is definitely in, but she agrees that trends are moving toward more of a simple, unstructured and modern look, with lower buns and fewer braids — “not too overwrought,” she says. Hairpieces and extensions are still popular, but natural flowers are being replaced by more hair jewelry, like tiaras. “Today’s bride is a much more modern bride and is much more wellversed in what they are looking for,” Leialoha says. “They usually come in with a [style] portfolio. They’re just very informed about everything.” Brides are encouraged to submit a Pinterest board of ideas before discussing options with the salon. “Anything you see on Pinterest is probably what we’re doing

in the salon,” Leialoha says, citing Cranston native and 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo as a major style and hair icon for many of her clients. Some brides still wait until much too late to contact their stylist — or skip professional hair and makeup altogether. This is a big no-no according to both salons. Hair and makeup are a “huge aspect of weddings that really have to be solidified; they should always be one of the first things you’re thinking of,” Leialoha says. “Don’t leave it to the last minute.” Moshiek agrees. “My advice is to always have a trial. If you’re unsure with your stylist and you’re picky, then you might want to start earlier versus a few months before.” She advises reaching out to your stylist at the same time you reach out to your photographer, to check availability, decide if you should be trialing, and how many trials you should have. With the right planning, you’ll be able to avoid wilted, uninspired tresses in your wedding photos. 2020 | Newport WeddingMagazine.com

W

hen it comes to a couple’s big day, grooms arguably get the short end of the sartorial stick. Yet grooms in Rhode Island are routinely proving that on their wedding day, they can look sharp, cool and collected. Thanks to the internet, today’s grooms are exposed to a plethora of inspiration, from traditional to crazily colorful — and anything in-between. Roger Gross of men’s formalwear retailer Franklin Rogers Ltd. has noticed that “explosion of creativity,” receiving orders for suits in every color under the sun, including blue, green and burgundy. He even gets requests for velvet ones and traditional Scottish kilts. Gross recognizes that while that isn’t for everyone, grooms are more imaginative than ever before — and he doesn’t see that changing anytime soon. Gross notes that a few key trends are coming this year, most notably the ascension of the blue suit. Many grooms are abandoning black in favor of navy or royal blue. This often stems from a desire for a lighter-colored suit for a spring or summer wedding. Grooms are also enjoying the benefits that customization offers: very slim styles fitted to the body, and a soft shoulder with little padding — a look that James Bond himself would wear with pride. Even grooms opting for a more conventional route are making tweaks to stand out. Kenny Teng of Marc Allen Fine Clothiers notes that more often, men are interested in the little customizations possible to make a classic suit feel fresh. For instance, wider lapels are making their way from Italy to New England, while traditional cuff links are giving way to smaller or concealed ones that lend suits a cleaner finish. Though beautiful year-round, Newport is an especially attractive wedding destination in the warmer months. To ke e p f ro m s we a t i n g through the ceremony, opt for a half-lined or unlined jacket. Wool and mohair blends offer both a subtle sheen and the coolness of linen — without the wrinkling. Both retailers agree that tuxedos are less popular now. Teng notes that men “want a piece that is multipurpose,” that can go from their wedding day to a day at the office. Suspenders are also passé, as are large cuff links and studs sets. Linen suits were collectively acknowledged as a bit of a wrinkly mess, and with the new alternatives mentioned above, no longer necessary. So the next time you’re at a wedding, don’t overlook the other person standing at the altar. And if you’re a groom, be yourself — and find the fit that is best for your day!

ou see them in nearly every rom-com: the mother of the bride (MOB) or the mother of the groom sobbing in her tightly fitted column dress with matching bolero jacket and big corsage. This has become the classic uniform for MOBs over the years, but now there are many different choices for your big day. “Mothers want something that doesn’t look like everyone else, and they don’t want to look matronly,” says Stacey Downing of Stalise in Portsmouth. “They also want to be comfortable.” If you have to wear three pairs of Spanx to put on a dress, you might want to think about alternative choices. So how do you find the balance between comfort and style? “I don’t stick by the dress-for-your-body-type rule,” explains Christina Carlson of the Bridal Garden in East Greenwich. The majority of the MOB dresses she carries come in sizes 0–32 and in 30 different colors. “If you feel beautiful and confident in something, then it’s for you,” she says. “I’ve sold every style dress to every different body type. If you can rock it, you can wear it.” A good rule of thumb to follow is to start with what you know. Are you at home in a tailored suit or sundress? Do you like to show a little skin or dress more conservatively? Do you like structured fabric or something with a little more give? Carlson suggests buying from a local shop instead of shopping online or at department stores because you can get personalized attention and the salespeople know the different Rhode Island venues, which can help dictate dress styles and fabric choice. Knowing the venue, the formality of the wedding and the MOB’s personal style all aid Carlson in her search. “You’ll probably dress more formally for a mansion wedding than an outdoor ceremony,” she says. You won’t want to wear a heavy taffeta sheath and jacket during the hottest month of the year, nor a strappy chiffon number in the dead of winter. Both Downing and Carlson point out that while you don’t want to outshine the bride, you do want to look special. “It’s a very important event and you will be out there in photographs and socializing,” says Downing. “You don’t want to spend the day pulling and adjusting your dress, so don’t wear something you don’t want to wear.”

Flowy, A-line or full dresses — whether in full-, knee- or tealength — are universally flattering, Downing notes, offering ease of movement that also makes them suitable for dancing. Unless you have a fairy godmother who can bibbity-bobbityboo the perfect frock at the last minute, you’ll want to start looking at least six months in advance. “A dress can take threeto-four months to come in, and then you can expect one-to-two additional months for alterations,” Downing suggests. “If you order a dress rather than buying off the rack, you can do things like add a sleeve or strap and take in the bust. If your weight changes, you’ll be able to address that, as well, so it fits your body perfectly.” On the other hand, don’t shop too soon! “Don’t shop for your dress before the wedding dress and the bridesmaids have a style and color direction,” Carlson says. “Then the mother of the bride chooses her dress, followed by the mother of the groom.” Downing concurs that starting to look early is very important to finding the right fit. “You may want a dress with a drape in the front to hide your tummy, or you may want to cover your arms,” she says. “Starting early gives you time to find what works best.” By scrambling at the last minute, your options are limited and you may end up wearing something that not only feels uncomfortable, but looks it, too. Downing saves her final bit of advice for the bride. “Let your mother wear what she wants to wear! It’s her big day, too.”

“IF YOU CAN ROCK IT, YOU CAN WEAR IT.”

he last thing Sarah Dennen wanted to say when she saw Middletown resident Daniel Heaney dancing and singing NSYNC was Bye Bye Bye. “We met in November 2014 through mutual friends the first week I moved here,” she recalls. “I saw him and that was it. He was the one!” It didn’t take long for Daniel to introduce Sarah to his family. On their first date, the couple headed to Malt on Broadway, where they unexpectedly ran into Daniel’s parents and their friends. The family affair continued on Martha’s Vineyard years later, when the groom-to-be popped the question on the jetty at Menemsha Beach, where they were surrounded by family and friends. – Tracie Seed

“We live in Newport County, and since I work in the wedding industry, I didn’t want to feel like I was at work on my wedding day. So we decided on a private residence.”

The father of the bride received an inscribed fishing lure to commemorate the event.

GOING TO THE DOGS (BUT IN A GOOD WAY)

The couple chose to have their first look photos taken at the Elms and also along Ocean Drive. “We had Moose and Roo, our two Bernese mountain dogs, take photos with us at the house in front of the Redbone antique truck,” says the bride. “That was a hoot trying to get that photo. You can imagine with a white wedding dress and two 147-pound dogs!”

THE SWEETEST

To complement the wedding’s rustic-elegant theme and sweet color palette of greens, whites and light blues, the couple treated their guests to a tower of doughnuts. The confections also found a special spot on a doughnut wall, which the bride custom-built with her father.

IT’S A GUY THING

To mark his special day, Daniel had an inscription embroidered in the inside breast pocket of his custom-made suit from Jos. A. Bank: “I love you. 9/1/18.” The groomsmen followed suit with their own custom-made attire.

They first met when Lena was coaxed out of bed by their mutual friend (her roommate) to spend a Saturday night on the town. After she put on her party clothes, she entered the kitchen where her friends were waiting, and Hunter was struck by Cupid’s arrow, falling “in love at first sight.” After a six-month long-distance courtship, the couple took a trip to Nantucket, where, after a day of hiking and biking, Hunter popped the question in front of a picturesque lighthouse. A 13-month engagement culminated in a Roaring Twenties Great Gatsby–themed wedding at Glen Manor House in Portsmouth. –TS

On their nine-year anniversary, after reaching the summit of their favorite hike with a stunning view of Mt. “St. George’s Chapel is incredibly important to us. Rachel was in the chapel choir and Chad was the lead trumpet in the brass ensemble.” SUSTAINABLE VOWS

The couple considered the environment when planning their wedding. “The bridesmaids’ dresses were from a company which aims to cut down on waste by custom-making every gown to order,” Rachel explains. The centerpieces were created from herbs, such as lavender, lemon balm and rosemary, which guests took home to use. Votives were made from recycled yogurt jars.

There wasn’t a love connection. That weekend, they had their first date. Five years later, Margaret went on a girls’ trip which, unbeknownst to her, was really a ruse so that Torrence could propose. “There was soft music, a photographer, and the room was beautifully decorated in my favorite colors,” she recalls. The couple opted for a soft palette of lavender and gray, with pops of gold for the reception. Bridesmaids wore lavender asymmetrical cocktail dresses, and the gentlemen sported gray suits with iris ties and pocket squares. The groom’s suit had a touch of elegance with satin lapels.

A HOLE LOTTA TREATS

In lieu of cake, the couple offered their guests a variety of sweets, including a doughnut hole station. “Flavors included vanilla brioche, cinnamon brioche and chocolate cake. We added custom to-go bags for guests who wanted to save their treats for later,” says the bride.

The couple maintained a long-distance relationship until they were able to be together during Renee’s graduate school years. In 2016, the pair went on a well-earned night away during a busy Christmas season. Anthony popped the question at the firepit at the Chanler at Cliff Walk, then whisked his new fiance to a romantic stay at Castle Hill. — TS

“We’d both always dreamed of having our wedding in Newport, but never thought it would be a reality! We wanted to make it a destination that had meaning to our love story. Newport was and always will be our happy place.” FIELD RESEARCH

In addition to attending the Newport Bridal Show, Renee used Newport Wedding magazine and its social media pages to get inspiration for her wedding. She also incorporated the Newport Best Read Guide into guests’ welcome bags.

THE SONG

The couple couldn’t come up with the perfect song or their first dance until they listened to a playlist assembled by Renee’s late father. “When Someone Like You by Van Morrison came on and I was singing along in the kitchen, Anthony came over, gave me a hug and said, ‘I think we just found our wedding song,’” she recalls. “I had goosebumps and he had tears in his eyes. We danced and enjoyed a special moment.”

RUSTICALLY ROMANTIC

The couple chose any ays to reflect their rustic-romantic theme, which was brought to life with a color palette of navy and burgundy. They used ginger jars for centerpieces, ivy and eucalyptus to surround the fireplace and doors and key bottle openers for place cards.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

After celebrating with a honeymoon in Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Spain, the couple returned to Hanover, Massachusetts, where Renee is an occupational therapist and Anthony works as a sales director.

“P

arrot” is the operative word in the love story of Newporters Emily Kelleher and Nathan O’Connor, who met and fell in love at the Red Parrot, where she was a hostess and he was a bartender. Nine years later, the lovebirds found themselves taking photographs with their cherished dog on Ocean Drive, when Nathan dropped to one knee and presented his bride-to-be with an engagement ring he had designed out of his grandmother’s diamond. She said yes, of course, and they started planning their Newport wedding, which came full circle with their rehearsal dinner at the Red Parrot. —TS

“There is nowhere else we’d want to get married than Newport! The 50th anniversary celebration of the Newport Bridge was the night of our wedding, and included fire orks that e had a great view of.” AMONG THE WHISPERINGS

In addition to having a quote on the seating chart from The Great Gatsby that read, “The whisperings and the champagne and the stars,” the couple also had vintage-style handkerchie s at the ready or their guests with tags that said, “For happy tears.” They added to the romance with a guitar player during the ceremony and a jazz trio during cocktail hour The dusty blue and pale blush color sche e reflected the ro antic eeling

T

he love story of Ami Pathak, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Rutul Davé, of Baroda, Gujarat, India, began before they were born. According to the tale’s long version, the groom’s uncle and the bride’s father were friends in their 20s, so the couple met several times while they were growing up until, finally, sparks flew. The short version? Ami’s sister Nisha claims the role of Cupid, because she set up a dinner that led to a love match. The couple got engaged in a lavender field in Provence, and tied the knot in Newport. —TS

“We chose the Newport Beach House because of its warmth, elegance, and the chance for our guests to party on the beach!” AND THE COUPLE WORE …

COFFEE, TEA OR CHAMPAGNE

The celebration’s soothing palette was dominated by blush, champagne gold and pistachio green. Ami’s obsession with tea and Rutul’s deep affection for coffee prompted the gifts for their wedding guests: Harney & ons ose cented Black Tea and icaragua old ountain o ee ro Brooklyn oasting Company.

O

ne thing that Rhode Island natives Allison McDonald and Zachary Fleet have in common is the gift of gab. “From the moment we met, we haven’t stopped talking,” says Allison, who was introduced to Zachary by his sister. “We had an instant connection and have been inseparable since.” When it came time to pop the question, Zachary surprised Allison with a trip to Stowe, Vermont. “He planned every single detail — skiing and shopping during the day, creating a special playlist for the actual proposal with ‘our’ songs, and planning a romantic dinner,” Allison says. —TS

“We wanted our wedding to be by the water. What better water views than Castle Hill?” ALLIE + GREGG = TRUE LOVE

At the reception, the couple cut into a small gold leaf–bespeckled cake, but their true love was reserved for other sweet choices. “Zach’s absolute favorite cake is Death by Chocolate from Gregg’s,” says the bride. “We served it to all our guests.” For favors, guests received an Allie’s Donut labelled “DONUT MIND IF I DO.”

TWO WEDDING TENTS AND A BAR

Prior to dinner and dancing to their song, Tangled Up in You by Aaron Lewis, the couple held a cocktail reception in a tent separate from the main venue. It was furnished with a beautiful lounge area and included the bar, to keep the main celebration area from getting too crowded.

IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY AT CASTLE HILL

“We had a spot of rain right before walking down the aisle. I saw the umbrellas pop up and thought we were doomed,” recalls the bride. “But the sun burst out from behind the clouds just as Zach and I were walking down the aisle after being married. By chance, our recessional music was Here Comes the Sun!”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

After a honeymoon in Florence, Rome and Ravello, Italy, the couple returned home to Coventry, Rhode Island, where Allison is an attorney and Zachary is a technology operations manager.

NewportWeddingMagazine.com | 2020

L

unchtime has a special meaning for Connecticut residents Erica McNeil and Jeffrey Napoli. The teachers met at work in 2010 and spent years sharing lunch until, eventually, they shared a loving relationship. In 2017, Jeffrey sent Erica out on a scavenger hunt in Newport. It began at a nail salon and wended its way through various meaningful places, with clues signifying the next stop. The final location was the Forty Steps off of Cliff Walk, where the bride-to-be found notes that family members and friends placed on each step. At the bottom was Jeffrey with a ring and a question. The celebration continued at — you guessed it — lunch, with family and friends at the Mooring. —TS

Artist Vesna Longton captured the first dance on canvas, while it happened.

“Planning a wedding in six months can be stressful! We needed a location where everything fell into place, and that was Newport. We were fortunate enough to go to the Newport Bridal Show, where we chose all of our vendors.” NOW, THAT TAKES THE CAKE

“When we saw the hanging cake at the Newport Bridal Show, we knew it was a ‘must have’ at our wedding,” beams the bride. The confection in question was a three-tiered hanging chandelier of chocolate ganache and strawberry shortcake with Chantilly cream. uests ere also o ed by a agnificent display of Italian cookies.

HISTORY HAS ITS PLACE

The bride took “something old” to a modern level by having one of her grandmother’s dresses turned into a cocktail dress for her rehearsal dinner. Her bridal shower dress was made from her mother’s wedding dress. At the reception, she displayed wedding photos of the guests, who had sent them in before the big day.

ANOTHER KIND OF WEDDING PORTRAIT hile sharing their first dance to d heeran s Thinking Out Loud, a live wedding painter captured the moment. “This offered entertainment for the whole reception,” Erica says, “as guests watched the painter start the canvas during the cocktail reception and end by the last song.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

After a honeymoon in Scottsdale and Sedona, Arizona, the couple jetted back to Shelton, Connecticut, where Erica is a science teacher and Jeffrey is a physical education and health teacher.

HIDDEN

Gems By Fred Albert

Newport County is blessed with a spectacular assortment of popular wedding venues. But sometimes you’re looking for a place that’s not as familiar — one that offers all the comforts and character of the big players, but is a little unexpected. (And, in some cases, a little more affordable.) So we asked an assortment of event planners and other insiders to share their hidden gems — those places that aren’t on everyone’s radar, but still offer a charming, only-in-Newport setting for your nuptials.

While Newport has its share of opulent wedding venues, not everyone can get married in a Gilded Age mansion. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style and character at your reception: Even a conventional tent or banquet hall can feel special when you apply a little imagination.

If you’re planning a Newport wedding and don’t actually live on Aquidneck Island, there are special considerations you might want to keep in mind. We asked a few event planners to share their insider tips for a successful destination wedding. Here are their suggestions.

Timing

Newport is a popular wedding destination (as indicated by the title of this magazine). Book your venue, rehearsal dinner, br unch, house of worship and transportation as soon as you know your date. If you’re planning a summer wedding, competition will be fierce, and you may pay more for venues and services.

Accommodations

Find out when your hotelier of choice starts accepting reservations for room blocks and jump on them as soon as they’re available. Hotels will usually accept reservations one year in advance, while inns and B&Bs might only accept them six months out. When you book, make sure you reserve rooms at a variety of price points, as not everyone may be in a position to splurge. And a lot of guests use Airbnb and VRBO these days, so you may not have to hold as many rooms as were needed in years past.

Welcome Bag

Many of your guests will turn the wedding into a mini-getaway (lodgings often impose a two-night minimum stay in high season, so they may not have a choice), so be sure to provide everyone with a welcome bag that includes a list of recommended attractions, restaurants and bars. Or slip in a copy of the Newport Best Read Guide, produced by the publishers of Newport Wedding magazine, which lists all of the major attractions, dining and entertainment options in Newport County. You can obtain bulk quantities free of charge by calling (401) 380-2313. If you’re feeling generous, add a gift certificate for a mansion tour, trolley tour or coffee shop.

Childcare

If any of your guests are traveling with children, provide them with the name of a childcare provider. Every event planner we spoke to recommended Newport Nannies (newportnannies.com).

Trafic

To help you anticipate traffic problems, Erica Trombetti of Infinite Events in Newport suggests checking the events calendar at discovernewport.org to see what’s happening on the day your wedding is scheduled. Even better: If you know your date more than a year in advance, come to Newport on the equivalent date (i.e. second Saturday in July) and check out what’s happening in town and how long it takes you to get from one place to another.

Transportation

One way to deal with traffic and parking problems is to arrange transportation for your guests. Wedding trolleys are a popular option. Barring that, you might include an Uber code in your welcome bags, offering guests free or discounted rides. (Keep in mind, however, that not everyone is app-savvy.)

RSVPs

A destination wedding asks more of your guests. They need to make travel plans, book accommodations, rent a car, arrange child or pet care, etc. Sherry Scott of Ruby Collaborative in Newport recommends asking your guests to return their RSVPs six to eight weeks in advance, instead of the usual four. That will give guests more time to make their arrangements, and will give you more time to chase down the slackers. Because of the expense involved, you should also expect a lower acceptance rate: it’s not unusual for 10–15 percent fewer guests to attend a destination wedding.

Marriage License

Not all “Newport weddings” take place in Newport. Your ceremony could actually be in Middletown or even Portsmouth, and you will need to obtain your marriage license in the municipality where the wedding is held. So confirm the ceremony address, then contact the town hall there to find out what, precisely, they need in terms of identification. (For example, they may only accept an actual birth certificate, not a photocopy.)

Town and Gown

How do you plan to get your wedding dress to Newport? Depending upon the fabric and the bulk of the gown, it might be hard to get it here without sustaining massive wrinkles — or worse. If you’re flying, consider booking an extra seat on the plane just for the dress (we’re not kidding), or purchase your dress from a Newport-area bridal shop and pick it up when you arrive.

Event Planner

Lastly, consider hiring a Newport-based event planner, even if your venue offers a wedding planner as part of their package. That person’s focus will just be on their venue, notes Katie McLaughlin of Leila Ryan Events in Newport, and their services generally won’t include help with transportation, scheduling, off-site rehearsal dinners, and the needs of your guests when they’re not at the venue. 2020 | Newport WeddingMagazine.com

PLANNING

MATRIMONIAL

Mishaps By Tracie Seed

You’ve planned your wedding down to the last petal in your flower girls’ baskets, but life has a way of subverting even the best-laid plans, turning “I do” into “now what?” Stephanie Frazier Grimm, founder and creative director of Couture Parties, is here to help visiting wedding parties navigate some common matrimonial mishaps. YOU FORGOT YOUR WEDDING PARTY GIFTS! Slip on a pair of sneakers from Sole Desire and run to Primavera for some thoughtful trinkets. Visit Newport Sweet Shoppe for local indulgences, such as lobster-shaped cookies and chocolates. “I love anything ‘classic Newport,’” Grimm notes, “so I would suggest anchor pearl earrings from Kiel James Patrick, and for the guys, anchor cuff links from Style Newport.”

YOUR FUTURE MOTHER-IN-LAW GIVES YOU THE COLD SHOULDER. Warm her up with a Water Journey at the Bodhi Spa, where she can experience a 104-degree Epsom salt pool, eucalyptus steam room and infrared sauna. (Tell her that the 50-degree water plunges will give her energy for the dance floor ... wink, wink.)

YOUR MAID OF HONOR IS 12 WEEKS PREGNANT AND CAN’T FIT INTO HER DRESS! If Mery’s Tailor Shop or Rosa’s Dry Cleaners & Tailor Shop can’t squeeze her burgeoning figure into the outfit, grab a pair of Spanx (or two) from Deborah Winthrop Lingerie in Portsmouth.

YOUR BRIDESMAIDS CHIP THEIR PERFECTLY PINK PEDICURES. Make a beeline to Envy Salon and Spa or Star Nails & Spa for indulgent mani-pedis.

AUNT BETTY HUGS YOUR BEST MAN AND GETS BRIGHT PINK ROUGE ON HIS SHIRT. Try your luck at Polo Cleaners , which offers same-day service. If that doesn’t work, Marc Allen Fine Clothiers, Royal Male and Michael Hayes offer fashionable replacements.

YOUR 5-YEAR-OLD NIECE LOSES HER NEWPORT CREAMERY AWFUL AWFUL ALL OVER HER NEW DRESS AND RUINS HER FLOWER CROWN. Head to The Secret Garden or Chaves’ Gardens for alternative posies, and Bellevue Kids for a new frock. YOUR FUTURE SISTER-IN-LAW TIES ONE ON AT THE REHEARSAL DINNER. Nurse her hangover with the hair of the dog at the Brick Alley Pub, whose Newport Jerky Mary features a blend of housemade mix, Absolut Peppar Vodka, Newport Jerky Roadkill hot sauce and a skewer of beef jerky. 74

R A I N T H R E AT E N S Y O U R O U T D O O R WEDDING. “Leave wiggle room in your budget for a rain plan,” Grimm says. “If you’re having a tented wedding, make sure it is big enough for your ceremony and cocktail hour.” Download the Dark Sky app to formulate a wedding weather plan, and if rain is in the forecast, stock up on umbrellas, coat racks and bins to place umbrellas in. Newport Tent Company is your one-stop shop to help you prepare, and Newport Mansions Stores carry a wide assortment of beautiful umbrellas and rain ponchos.

FIDO FROLICS THROUGH THE MUD BEFORE THE CEREMONY. Go to Wag Nation for a shampoo, new collar and matching leash, and consider hiring a dog handler. “Pets must leave right after the ceremony because venues do not allow them at the reception,” cautions Grimm. “I recommend Lucky Dog Resort; they can be the handler and board your dog for the night.”
