Shipbuilders Honor Fallen Heroes for the Holidays Members of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) spent time away from work on Dec. 16 to honor fallen veterans during the Wreaths Across America (WAA) ceremony held at the Hampton National Cemetery (HNC). Shipbuilders joined 300 volunteers from Wounded Warriors, Veteran Foreign Wars and other civic groups from Hampton Roads to prepare more than 8,500 wreaths ahead of the noon-time wreath laying event. VERG Community Coordinator Beth Hoss (E89), whose Air Force veteran grandfather rests at HNC, said the team of volunteers spent several hours fluffing, counting and prepping 1,500 live and 7,000 artificial wreaths before they were placed in front of 8,500 headstones. “It’s my opportunity to give back to those who gave so much to protect my freedom and the freedom of many,” said VERG Chair Marcia Stewart-Downing (O36). “It’s significant for me because I’m able to remember my uncle who was killed in the Vietnam War.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

U.S. Navy Goes for Gold with Selection of Sponsors for Enterprise (CVN 80) On Dec. 20, 2016, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced via Twitter that the Ship’s Sponsors of future Newport News Shipbuilding-built USS Enterprise (CVN 80) would be United States Olympic-goldmedalists Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles.
OSHA Recognizes NNI On Dec. 21, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that Newport News Industrial (NNI), part of HII’s newly formed Technical Solutions division, has been awarded the SHARP (Safety and Health Recognition Program) certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. “The safety of our employees is our number one priority, so receiving the SHARP certification is a testament to this commitment,” said NNI Vice President Steve Napiecek. REMINDER: JMAF Construction Impacts North Yard Parking Construction of the new state-of-the-art Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF) located at the northern end of the shipyard is currently underway. The first phases of the facility are scheduled to open later this year and will feature multiple worksites, advanced technology, automated equipment, heavyweight cranes, large transportation doors and specialty paint bays to support the construction of aircraft carriers and submarines. “When construction of this facility first began in June 2015, no loss of employee parking was expected,” said Lucas Hicks, director of Facilities and Real Estate. “However, as the design of this facility has continued to mature, the footprint necessary to meet the increased aircraft carrier and submarine work has grown from 19 to 26 acres.” As a result, approximately 396 spots in the North Yard have been lost to accommodate JMAF construction (a map detailing the affected areas is pictured above). As the construction progresses over the next four years, the Facilities and Real Estate team will continue to evaluate the parking impact and will look at ways to add spaces to offset parking spots being lost as a result of this facility’s construction. “We know that parking continues to be an issue for our employees, and we apologize for this inconvenience,” said Hicks. Employees affected by this parking change are encouraged to park at the following locations: • North Hidens (approximately 360 spaces were recently added to the south side parking lot located off Warwick Blvd.) • Top Decks of Bldg. 902 and Bldg. 903 parking garages These locations are serviced by the company’s Park-and-Ride Shuttle Service, which offers free rides to and from the North Yard and to and from the Bldg. 903 Parking Garage and 31st Street Bus Stop. Additional information regarding loss of parking will be communicated in future editions of Currents. For questions regarding these changes, contact Dan Bieker (X53) at 688-5292.

Shipbuilders Honor Fallen Heroes for the Holidays CONTINUED FROM PG 1
WAA began in 1992 when the owner of Worcester Wreath Company found himself with a surplus of more than 5,000 wreaths. Remembering a childhood visit to Arlington National Cemetery, he knew he had the perfect opportunity to honor fallen heroes. The annual tribute has grown rapidly, and this year more than 1.2 million wreaths were donated and placed at headstones in more than 1,000 cemeteries across the nation. The theme for this year was ‘Say Their Names.’ “Just by calling out their name before you lay that wreath on the grave allows your thank you to be more personal for that soldier, allowing their legacy to live on,” said Audrey Davis (X70). A U.S. Army veteran, James Wallis Jr. (O36) was among shipyard volunteers who participated in the event. His parents both served during WWII. “The memorial wreath is a simple symbol that allows us to tangibly reset our personal values as we think of what sacrifice and liberty mean,” said Wallis Jr. “Giving up personal time for a solemn reminder like this is a way to stop and reflect on deeper, lasting values.” The event was also very personal for Dianna Shoemaker (E44) who lost her best friend, a U.S. Navy veteran, in a helicopter crash on Jan. 16, 2008. “Every gun salute I hear still brings chills down my spine and rings my heart,” said Shoemaker. “Even the quiet solitude of the national veterans cemeteries deserve every bit of grace and holiday cheer.”

Ensuring HII Decision Makers Speak with One Voice
”Adopt an Angel” is one of several programs O68 developed to give back to the community.
O68 Gives Back to the Community The O68 Dimensional Control department pulled together as a team to give back to the community with several new programs the team hopes will become a holiday tradition. The team worked with Newport News Court Appointed Special Advocates to identify 22 children for a special “Adopt an Angel” gift drive, and partnered with Palmer Elementary School to select a family of four for a special “Adopt a Family” program. The O68 Safety, Engagement, Communication, Action Committee (SECA), department director, managers, and associates purchased over 75 toys and gifts and contributed $585 in monetary donations. “We look for different organizations that can use our help at different times during the year,” said Dimension Control Technician Paula Young. “It doesn’t just enforce what we’re trying to do here as far as safety and engagement. It’s also giving back to the community and providing hope to others when they need it most.” The group continues to look for new ways to give back. In January, the team will be donating hats, gloves and scarves to Peninsula Rescue Mission.
Huntington Ingalls Industries maintains an extension of its corporate office in the nation’s capital. HII’s Government and Customer Relations (GCR) office is the point of contact with D.C. customers in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Department of Energy, and other federal offices and Congress. The GCR office is responsible for ensuring that HII always speaks with one voice when interacting across a diverse landscape of decision makers in the district. The GCR office, headed by Mitch Waldman, is responsible for: all interactions with the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard customer to help execute programs; engagement with Congress in support of HII priorities; interaction with other federal branches, independent “think tanks,” academic institutions, and the many business and trade associations, to help understand and contemplate future trends in technology, customer requirements and business practices; and administration of HII’s political action committee, SHIPPAC, in conjunction with eligible employees. Corporate Policy CP A7, “Employee Political Activity,” and Corporate Procedure A402, “HII Government and Customer Relations Office,” detail the requirements for employee and company political engagement at the federal and international level. Permission from the head of the GCR office is required before engagement for, related to, or on the company’s behalf with any federal political official. Questions about the scope of GCR or corporate policies and procedures should be directed to your manager, Human Resources, the Law Department, the GCR, or the ethics office. E82 Helps Local Families During Holidays Employees from the E82 Reactor Services Department sponsored families this past holiday season. The team worked with the Newport News Department of Human Services to provide gifts, food and grocery gift cards to local families. E82 Reactor Services employees sponsored two families and three senior citizens. Groups from Engineering Operations and Manufacturing Engineering set a goal to raise $2,000 for 2016, and surpassed that goal by raising a total of $2,442 to support sponsoring the families. “Our hope was to make a difference to local families who can’t afford a Christmas celebration on their own,” said Engineering Manager Wayne Urban.

Congratulations FQS Graduates In 2016, 21 new foremen completed the final step in the Foreman Qualification Standards (FQS) by completing the General Foreman’s Proficiency Board held in the Management Development Center at Newport News Shipbuilding. FQS is a program used by general foremen to mentor, track progress and establish a frame work for successful performance. Upon successful completion of all tasks in the guide, the foreman appears before a Board of peer general foremen. The candidate is then evaluated through a series of questions related to how the foreman demonstrates the desired leadership and management behaviors on the job. The process is rigorous and requires significant time investment from all participants. Since the program’s start in 2012, 111 foremen have successfully completed the process.

Healthy Success: Samantha Abbott Since March 2015, Planner Samantha Abbott (X73) and her husband Jeff collectively shed more than 200 pounds by changing simple things about their health and lifestyle. She was a size 16 going on 18 and is now a size three. “I think everybody who starts gaining weight—you kind of know you are but life is happening,” Abbott said. “It’s like, oh there’s five pounds and there’s 10 and so forth. You’re out raising your kids or you’re out in the community doing things. So you don’t really notice.” But they did eventually notice. Abbott admittedly did not like to be the center of attention and would choose to fade into the background in most family photos because she didn’t recognize herself anymore. During last winter’s snowfall, the couple decided to take some photos out in the snow. “I was so proud of those photos of us because we were being crazy in the photos, but at the same time I was like, ‘who is that and how do I stop this?’” While her husband was very active growing up and throughout their marriage, Abbott said that she had never been an athlete, so she had to learn. “My husband said something to me that stuck with me,” she said. ““The desire to change must be greater than the desire to stay the same.’” Abbott lost 25 pounds within four weeks by switching to fresh fruits and vegetables instead of binging on what was in the pantry. She and her husband also started walking five days a week, which progressed into short runs and then longer ones. The couple has registered and participated in at least one race every month this year. She admits the food changes were easy. It was the running part that was most challenging because it’s so easy for other chores and activities to get in the way. “Nobody can run for you. It’s all you. It may be hard during it, but it’s so exhilarating when you can say that you completed a run.” The couple will be running the One City Marathon’s 8K on March 12, 2017. “When you’re out there with these large groups of people, everyone is of the same mindset. Everybody’s encouraging you. People are clapping the whole way for you. It’s very motivating.” To learn more about the race or to register, visit www.onecitymarathon.com.
