Detail Pipe Shop Bends First Production Pipe on “Big Dave” On Dec. 16, the Pipe Shop held a ribboncutting ceremony to celebrate the world’s largest all-electric pipe bending machine’s first official bend. The production piece bent during the event was a 6-inch pipe for John F. Kennedy’s (CVN 79) jet fuel system. “This machine represents the latest in bending technology,” said Lead Project Engineer Nick Brady. “It can bend up to 20,000 pipes per year for submarines and carriers and it utilizes lasers to measure bend angles to ensure that cuts are precise.” Brady also said that safety was at the forefront of all decisions from design to build of the new machine. “Trip hazards were eliminated during the installation of the machine by routing air,
electrical and lubrication lines underground or overhead,” he said. “The machine also has a long list of built-in safety features. The machine is capable of moving a completed bent part to a safe position for removal and a laser detection system is built into the machine, so that if personnel get too close to the machine while it’s in operation, the machine will sound an alarm and shutdown.” Pipe Bender Mike Walters (X42) operated the first bend during the ceremony. “I’m really excited about this new machine,” he said. “It is safe and it provides us benders with ways to do our job more efficiently and with higher quality.” General Foreman Kenny Quinn stressed...

HII, NNS and AMSEC Employees Support Local Charities During the Holiday Season In December, Huntington Ingalls Industries, Newport News Shipbuilding and AMSEC employees partnered with local organizations to donate to those in need during the holiday season. HII’s corporate office and NNS hosted a holiday food drive in partnership with the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. From Nov. 24 through Dec. 12, employees collected 25,451 pounds of food and $7,400 that will help feed families during the winter season.

DESIGN NNS’ WATER STATION FOR THE ONE CITY MARATHON NNS is looking for teams of shipbuilders that want to work together to design a shipyard-themed water station at mile marker 24 for the One City Marathon on March 15. The winning team will set up its water station along the marathon course on race day. Entries will be accepted through January 30. The top five proposals will be voted on in a public poll. Teams are encouraged to submit drawings, proposals or anything else that will help the judges make a decision. ALL WORK MUST BE COMPLETED ON PERSONAL TIME.
