Over 21,000 pounds of food and $10,300 in donations were collected and donated to the Foodbank prior to the company’s annual shutdown period. Employees Recognized at 2016 Intellectual Property Awards Luncheon Twenty-three employees received invention disclosures and were issued patent awards during Newport News Shipbuilding’s Intellectual Property Awards Luncheon on Dec. 7, 2016. Award recipients discussed six new and useful inventions that will support current and future company business. Of the six new provisional patents, one was officially issued as a 2016 invention by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Don Hamadyk, director of Innovation and Engineering Solutions, kicked off the luncheon by congratulating the recipients. “Thank you for all that you do as we advance towards the future,” he said. “You each represent the very best of this company.” NNS’ Chief Engineer Charles Southall echoed those sentiments as he congratulated awardees and thanked them for their willingness to do more. “The human capital in this room is more than some nations,” he said. “Each of you and the people you teach will make a difference in this shipyard for the next 130 years and beyond.” Congratulations to the following awardees, pictured right: Front row (L to R): Steve Hollowood (E24) and Ricky Gilliam (M53). Second row (L to R): Chuck Smith (E24), John Vandenberg (E26), John Ralls (E30) and Daniel Hebert (E30). Third row (L to R): Joshua Taylor (E17), Jeff Oliver (E24), Zareh Soghomonian (E05), Clifton Edwards (X43), Kyle Wade (E26), Ken Evanson (X59) and Matthew Absi (E26). CVN 79 Program Collects Over 7,900 Meals
Shipbuilders Fights Hunger Together
The John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Program set a 2016 goal to provide more than 7,900 meals in support of the Newport News Shipbuilding 2016 Food Drive. Through the efforts of volunteers staged at the North Yard Gates and encouraging donations during departmental potlucks, the program was able to achieve its goal by collecting approximately 8,372 meals. The CVN 79 Program would like to thank all of its volunteers and supporters who helped make 2016 a record year.
Department E71 held its second annual food drive competition in support of Newport News Shipbuilding’s 2016 Annual Food Drive.
Pictured above: Tammy Smith (X91), left, and Ramona Johnson (X91).
Several employees and departmental managers worked together to beat the 2015 goal. This year’s theme was “The Ultimate Food Fight,” which refers to the fight against hunger. The E71 team succeeded in its objective by donating over 4,800 pounds of food during this year’s drive.

AROUND THE YARD
Holiday Reminder: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Newport News Shipbuilding will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to the nature of shipyard operations, it will be necessary for some employees to work on the holiday. Supervisors will notify employees if they are required to work.
Huntington Memorial Rock Turns 100 The Huntington Memorial Rock celebrated its 100th birthday on Jan. 1, 2017. The “rock” bearing the engraved words of Collis P. Huntington, the shipyard’s founder, was originally unveiled behind the Main Office (currently Bldg. 86) on Jan. 1,1917. The plaque on the monument reads, “We shall build good ships here; at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always good ships,” was attributed to Collis P. Huntington. Rumors say he “borrowed” the inscription from a bourbon distillery. Nonetheless, this monument continues to be a visible reminder of our commitment to quality at NNS. Pictured (L to R): James Kwasny (X36), David McBride (X36), X43 Trade Director Stewart Brenegar, Dennis Moss (X88), Morris Harrell (X36), Robert Smock (X36), Director of Enviromental Health and Safety Dru Branche and Director of X36 Waterfront Support Services David Vandegrift.
Ethics Moment: X36 Rigger Puts Safety First While recently working a systems test on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), Crane Rigger Specialist David McBride (X36) noticed an unsafe rigging process nearby and advised the team doing the work to stop. After further evaluation, it was determined that there could have been serious injury risks for the rigging team as well as ship damage if the team continued. Leadership from Trade Operations, Environmental Health and Safety and the CVN 78 Program, along with shipbuilders from X36, recognized McBride during a meeting on Dec. 19, 2016, and thanked him for his courage and prompt actions. “Attention to detail is critical in this line of work and it is not taught from a book but earned through years of practice,” said Construction Supervisor Dennis Moss (X88). “McBride’s’ ability to recognize, evaluate and control a hazardous situation was greatly appreciated by all of us but especially by the rigging team who were kept out of harm’s way.”
Pictured above: The Newport News Shipbuilding Huntington Memorial Rock returned to its pre-1969 position behind the main office building (Bldg. 86) in December 2009.

SAFETY
January 5, 2017 Dear Shipbuilders: As we begin 2017, I am extremely pleased to share that last year was our safest year on record with 946 injuries. While our ultimate goal is zero, this represents 159, or nearly 15 percent, fewer injured shipbuilders than in 2015. I’d like to commend each of you for making safety your top priority. Our injuries have been steadily decreasing over the past five years, and I am confident that together, we can reach our goal of zero injuries. Safety and wellness will continue to be our highest priorities for the year ahead. We will place additional emphasis on ergonomics and improvements to the work environment, and identifying and fixing the things that will prevent an injury before it happens. We’ll also begin offering prescription safety glasses services on site, and will continue our wellness activities with our Interactive Health program. Also very important to our business is our continued commitment to ethics and integrity, inclusion and diversity, and engagement. The work we do requires every shipbuilder to always make honest and ethical decisions. It is also critically important that we listen to diverse perspectives and create an inclusive environment for all people. You will continue to hear and see more throughout the year on these important topics. I believe that asking yourself ‘what should I have done?’ as opposed to ‘what would I have done?’ is a great way to start thinking differently about ethics, integrity, inclusion, diversity and engagement. We will know our journey is over when the answer to either question is the same. Quality, cost and schedule remain critical priorities as well. We will deliver USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and Washington (SSN 787) this year. We will also complete the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) inactivation, as we cut the first piece of steel for the next Enterprise (CVN 80). Construction is well underway on the John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) and on 12 Virginia-class submarines. Planning work continues on the USS George Washington (CVN 73), with the ship returning to NNS this summer for the start of her refueling and complex overhaul. We will also start a large submarine availability this year on USS Columbus – the first to be performed at NNS in a decade. Work is progressing on the new Columbia-class submarines, which will replace the current Ohio class. NNS is participating in the design and will manufacture major assemblies and modules, including the bow, sail, stern, auxiliary machinery room, superstructure and weapons modules. Many of these modules will be built between 2021 and 2039 in our new Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF), which is being constructed in the North Yard. We will continue to transform our company from paper drawings and work packages to a digital work environment. Our goal is for every shipbuilder to have access to a computer, laptop, tablet or smart device by the end of 2020 to support this effort. We are also coming out of the workload valley that began in 2015 and are hiring again. We are currently evaluating how and when to reinstate some of the programs that were impacted by our cost savings initiatives, like the tuition reimbursement program, and we are working on new ideas to our parking challenges. The year ahead will be challenging and exciting, and it will also provide us with new opportunities. Thank you for your dedicated service and your commitment to these important priorities. Sincerely,
Matt Mulherin President, Newport News Shipbuilding
