In December, Newport News Shipbuilding produced the music video for Derek Wilson’s winning safety song, “I Wanna Be Safe.” Shot at the shipyard, the video highlights shipbuilders from USS Enterprise (CVN 65), Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and the submarine program. The song’s messages remind shipbuilders of the importance of safety at NNS and helps to set the tone for the New Year. “Filming the video was a lot of fun,” said Wilson. “I never thought I would be able to use my outside talents inside the yard. I hope that doing the song and making the video help people to watch out for their safety and the safety of others.” Shipbuilders onboard Enterprise previewed the music video at an all-hands meeting Jan. 12.
“It’s awesome to see the energy and enthusiasm going into the most important aspect of what we do here – taking care of each other,” said CVN 65 Program Director Dave Long. “Having the ability to have fun with it makes it that much more likely to help us to continue to improve our safety culture.“ Visit huntingtoningalls.com/safetysong to watch Derek Wilson’s “I Wanna Be Safe” music video. This year’s video was directed by Aaron Pritchett (O29), Carter Mahnke (O36) and Devon Artis (O36).
