NNS Holds First Annual MLK Day Event On Friday, Jan. 13, Newport News Shipbuilding held its first annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. A total of three celebrations were held – one on each shift. The theme of this year’s event was, “We have the Power to Make Change,” and hundreds of shipbuilders gathered to hear inspirational messages from company leaders. Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, kicked off the event. “Dr. King once said that our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” he said. “I believe we all have the power to make change, and I hope you believe you have the power to make change.” HII Vice President and General Counsel Kellye Walker and NNS President Matt Mulherin spoke about the legacy and impact of Martin Luther King Jr. and discussed how shipbuilders can be the change for good, both at work and in the community. Walker’s keynote message centered around life-defining moments, such as Dr. King’s “I have a dream” moment. “I ask you to think about your moment,” she said. “We all have them, and if you seize your moment to do the right thing, you might change someone’s mind about something – you might change an attitude for the positive. And if you, seizing your moment, change someone’s attitude for the better, then it can in turn change a community, which can in turn change a nation, which in turn can change the world.” Watch a highlights video on MyNNS. The video is also available to share with family and friends on the company’s external website, the NNS to Go app (currently only Android devices) and HII’s social media pages.
Shipyard Artifacts: Plant Engineering Turns 100 Jan. 15 marked the 100th anniversary of the formation of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Plant Engineering (O41) Department. From 1917 to 1924, plant engineers at NNS were responsible for purchasing and installing machinery, and designing jigs and fixtures. Today, the department’s responsibilities touch virtually every square foot of NNS’ footprint and include architectural services, maintenance engineering, waterfront services and more. To mark the occasion, the department held a special celebration Jan. 13. See the Jan. 15 Huntington Ingalls Industries Facebook post to read, “The Plant Engineers” from the 1934 Shipyard Bulletin, or view it at issuu.com/newportnewsshipbuilding.

Career Pathways Supports STEM in Local Schools Career Pathways volunteers recently served as judges during a science fair held at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School in Hampton. Eighth grade students provided presentations that demonstrated their understanding of insulation and heat transfers. Presentations were judged on scientific thought, engineering and clarity. HII’s Executive Vice President of Strategy and Development Michael Smith served as one of the judges. “I have to admit, I was a bit of a science geek growing up,” said Smith. “I loved competing in science fairs and participated in them from middle school through high school. More often than not, I’d come home empty-handed, but always came away with a deeper understanding of my work. For that, I was and still am thankful for the individuals who volunteered to teach and judge. The opportunity to participate was a fantastic way to spend an evening – I can’t wait for the next one.” Career Pathways volunteers Cametrice Butcher (X89) and Lewis Fisher (E25) also participated as judges during the event. Both employees were top volunteers last year, each dedicating more than 90 hours of volunteer service with Career Pathways at local schools in the Hampton Roads area. For more information about becoming a volunteer visit the Career Pathways website or contact Pierrette Swan (K18) at 688-2201.

Use Current Employee Portal to Apply for Jobs Due to recent enhancements to the HII Careers website and job applicant system, Newport News Shipbuilding Talent Acquisition would like to remind current employees to apply for job openings through the “Current HII Employees” option listed first on the careers home page. To search and view jobs, go to www.buildyourcareer.com and click on, “Search Internal Only Jobs & Apply.” New jobs are posted every week. The majority of jobs accept applications for five calendar days. Some IT, management or hard-to-fill jobs may be posted for 10 days or longer. The professional, trades/crafts, and students and new graduates portals are for external applicants. For questions, email buildyourcareer@hii-co.com.
As a reminder, company identification badges are meant to prove identity and provide access privileges at work. They should never be worn outside of the facility (i.e. going to lunch or walking outside shipyard gates). Exposing a company badge in public permits identity thieves to see your name, place of work and possibly your level of security clearance. In addition, if the public now knows what an employee badge looks like, it increases the chances of a successful forgery. When leaving work, employees should always remove their badge and put it away. For additional guidance, refer to policy NN 12-202 – “Access to Company Premises.”
