Shuttle Drivers Keep Shipbuilders Moving Many Newport News Shipbuilding employees depend on the company’s shuttle service to get to and from their work sites every day. The shipbuilders who pilot the shuttle service’s buses and vans are unsung heroes at NNS, according to Matt Needy, vice president of Operations. “You play an extremely important role in terms of getting people to and from their jobs safely,” he told shuttle drivers during a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 30. Needy thanked the drivers for their commitments to safety and service, as well as the positive attitudes they present to employees. “You are the first face of the shipyard that many people see every day, and I have received many unsolicited positive comments about the work you all do.” Facilities Director Jim O’Brien said he has taken rides on shuttles to see what drivers and riders experience. “I want to thank you personally for what I’ve seen,” he told drivers. “I’ll continue to get out there to ride the buses and see what’s going on with the parking lots as we continuously try to make improvements for everybody.” As the company works toward short- and long-term employee parking solutions, shuttle drivers will continue to play an integral role at the shipyard. Many shuttle drivers – like Michael Abrams (O43) – drive before and after their regular NNS shifts. “It’s very interesting. You deal with a lot of challenges. We look out for the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other drivers on the road. We all try to work together as a team and help people as best we can,” he said. “We want to make sure everybody gets to work safely and on time.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

Training the Trainers Four shipbuilders – representing different departments – make up the inaugural cohort of Instructor Development and Certificate Program (IDCP) certified instructors at Newport News Shipbuilding. “Several years ago, we started looking at how to create a more formalized and consistent training program for our instructors, regardless of where they work in the company,” said IDCP Manager Susan Goss. The NNS-piloted IDCP is the result. Christopher Metcalf (O39), Benjamin Smail (O22), Michelle Avery (O25) and David Hewlett (E86) have successfully... CONTINUED ON PG 3
