Repurposed Facility Brings More Work Indoors Since November, Material Handling Supervisor Eden Jones (O53) and her team of 14 shipbuilders have moved more than 4.1 million pounds of steel indoors, to a new home in the repurposed Building 621. Facilities Engineer Eddie Zydron (O41) and Christa Riley (O41) led the construction and renovation project to ensure the warehouse met production needs.
“It was great that I was able to be involved in the decision making process,” he said. “I get so excited when my daughter asks me about what I do at the shipyard – I’m grateful to do my part in helping build these world-class ships.”
Material Planning Control Manager Larry Trevathan (O53) said the new facility and equipment bring greater efficiencies and improve morale. “It all boils down to engagement,” he said. “Now, with quite a bit of work inside, it makes shipbuilder’s lives at work better. It also gives our shipbuilders better equipment to perform multi-cut requests from customers and allows for better interchangeability of resources.”
“With the opening of this facility, we are able to move small steel shapes and pipe from outside storage locations throughout the shipyard to one indoor location,” said Rob Hogan, vice president of Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. “It improves the working conditions for our employees, eliminates or reduces many safety hazards, and improves the efficiency of our material operations.”
Material Support Specialist Harweda Knight Jr. (O53) was instrumental in the approach and setup of equipment, including a new steel-cutting saw that replaces a 53-year-old saw. He said he felt his opinion mattered throughout the process.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Feb. 9 to mark the occasion.

VCS Program Hosts Navy Crew for “Coaching Moments” On Feb. 8, the Virginia-Class Submarine Program hosted Navy crew members from Indiana (SSN 789) and Delaware (SSN 791) for its first joint Leadercast Coaching Moments event. Construction Supervisor Michael Brown (X82), a Sub Force Navy retiree, was among more than 50 attendees. “My service is to the submarine sailors that will sail on these ships,” he said. “Nothing else is more important to me than my fellow submarine sailors, so I’m thankful they were able to join.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

VCS Program Hosts Navy Crew for “Coaching Moments”
Have You Had a Great Experience at the HII Family Health Center?
CONTINUED FROM PG 1
The Coaching Moment featured a video presentation from author and former Navy SEALs Commander, Rorke Denver, whose topic was “Simply Lead at All Costs.” “What struck a chord with me was the idea that a leader’s behavior is contagious,” said Superintendent Stewart Welch (X82). “If you want your team to approach problems calmly and resolve them in a professional manner, then you as a leader, must model that behavior.” SSN 791 Chief Ricky Heering said the Delaware crew really got a lot out of the event and looks forward to the next. Program Manager David Vincent (X80) added, “Joint efforts like this will continue to build even better relationships between our shipbuilders and the Navy, and promote leadership growth in both organizations.” Leadercast Coaching Moments are sponsored by the Management Development Center.

Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE), in partnership with The Apprentice School Student Association and the American Heart Association, hosted this year’s “Go Red for Women” event Feb. 6. The event featured AHA guest speakers Tamika Quinn and Jennifer Stout. More than 40 NNS employees and their families attended the presentation to learn about heart health. “We were trying to do something different than all of our past Go Red events,” said Heather Smith (K75). “This time, we wanted the important messages to reach family members.” During halftime of the Lady Builders basketball game, 10 shipbuilder children talked about what their families do to practice good heart health.

Notice: New Traffic Pattern on Washington Avenue Bridge The City of Newport News is nearing completion of the first phase of construction of the Washington Avenue Bridge, located at 40th Street. As a result, vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Washington Avenue between 37th and 42nd Street will be affected through October 2017. Beginning Feb. 13, a new traffic pattern for the bridge will be in place. The new pattern will maintain two lanes of two-way traffic (one lane northbound and one lane southbound). Pedestrian traffic will also shift east. Due to the new traffic pattern, street parking between 38th and 42nd Street will be restricted during the construction period. Employees should expect potential gridlock in the area during heavy travel times and are encouraged to use alternative routes. Read the EH&S Notice for tips on pedestrian and driver safety when traveling in the area. For questions regarding the bridge replacement project, contact Omayra Orama (O41) at 374-0190.

King and other great African American leaders who have
shaped our country’s history.
Cele brating Blac k His tor y Month The Senior leadership team joins all NNS shipbuilders in celebrating both the significant contributions African Americans have made to our nation and the valuable role of our African American shipbuilders.
