NNS Conducts Catapult Testing on Lincoln On Feb. 10, Newport News Shipbuilding announced that it has begun testing the updated catapult systems aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), which is nearing the end of its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). Working with the U.S. Navy crew aboard Lincoln, NNS shipbuilders are testing the steam catapult systems through a process called “no-load” testing, during which the overhauled components in the catapult systems are operated with steam for the first time. “When an aircraft carrier undergoes its overhaul, we completely update and modernize the components in the ship’s catapult systems,” said Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. “Many of the components are tested at a land-based facility prior to being installed into the ship for final testing. It’s rewarding to see the hard work of the shipbuilders and the Navy culminate in ‘shooting’ the catapults with steam for the first time in over three years. The testing of the catapults is another signal that this great ship is coming back to life and will soon rejoin the fleet for another 25 years of service to our country.” Capt. Ronald Ravelo, the ship’s commanding officer, was on the flight deck and gave the signal to launch the first “no-load.” “To everyone involved in this huge and significant milestone, thank you,” Ravelo said. “The test reminds us that this is what aircraft carriers do: We launch aircraft to project combat power from the sea in support of our national interests.” The testing involves shooting the catapults about 20 times with less than two minutes of recovery time between operations. Lincoln is in the final stages of testing all of its steam-powered systems. Sailors signal steam catapult systems testing aboard CVN 72. “Lessons of Our Past Propel Us to Our Future” at AASA’s Black History Month Event The African American Shipbuilder’s Association (AASA) hosted its 7th Annual Black History Month Celebration Feb. 11 in the James River Room of Bldg. 520. The theme for the evening, “Lessons of our Past Propel Us to Our Future” was highlighted in an inspiring and dynamic message delivered by special guest speaker, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia Levar Stoney. Secretary Stoney, a native of Yorktown, is the first AfricanAmerican to hold the post and is the youngest member of Governor Terry McAuliffe’s cabinet. His message, which drew on examples from his own life, encouraged those in attendance to “not quit until they reached their goal.” He also said the shipyard has always been a place for opportunity and the Commonwealth is proud of the shipyard and its shipbuilders. Spoken word presentations, a mime performance and art exhibit featuring the work of talented shipbuilders and their families rounded out the evening. Marissa Hodge (E83), also a participating artist, said, “I couldn’t wait to go home and share Secretary Stoney’s message with my young daughter. His accomplishments are an inspiration for all of us. The art show, the mime performance and the other speakers were wonderful. I really enjoyed the entire event. Overall it was just a fantastic evening.” Visit the African American Shipbuilders Association Yardnet website often throughout the month of February to view various Black History Month features. The website also has information on upcoming events and information on how to become a member.

Nine Foremen Complete FQS Process In December, nine Newport News Shipbuilding foremen completed the final step in the Foremen Qualification Standards (FQS) process by completing the General Foreman’s Proficiency Board held in the Management Development Center. Implemented in 2012, FQS is a tool used by general foremen to mentor, track progress, and establish a framework for successful performance. Upon attaining proficiency on all tasks in the guide, the general foreman recommends their foremen to appear before a board of peer general foremen. The board evaluates the candidate through a series of questions related to how the foreman demonstrates the desired leadership and management behaviors on the job. The process is rigorous and requires a significant investment in time from all participants. Since the program’s inception, 90 foremen have successfully completed the process. The next FQS proficiency board is scheduled for Feb. 23-24.

I am not

EFFEMINATE. About Face Rethink what you think. “Some people think gay men are super feminine people who like to go shopping, but the majority of us are just regular people who do regular things, who can hold our own on the waterfront, with our tools or in an office. I’m comfortable with my sexuality, and I try to be respectful to everyone else as long as they’re respectful back.” Paul England
