Delivering Freedom The Virginia-Class Submarine Program held “Delivering Freedom” town halls at various locations throughout the yard Feb. 21-22. Matt Needy, vice president of Virginia-Class Submarine Program and Fleet Support, led the events to congratulate shipbuilders for recent accomplishments in safety, quality, cost, schedule, but also to motivate shipbuilders to continue to find new ways to improve. The Apprentice School Graduates 184 Apprentices On Saturday, Feb. 25, The Apprentice School held commencement exercises for 184 graduates. The ceremony was held at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton. Rear Adm. Mat Winter, the U.S. Navy’s deputy program executive officer for the F-35 Lightning II, delivered the commencement address. "Congratulate yourself and congratulate and thank those that have helped you get to where you are today and continue to move forward to be a better person, to strive for that next level. Lead from the front and make a difference,” he told the class. Eighty-eight apprentices completed an optional, advanced program, which includes coursework in subjects such as marine design, production planning, modeling and simulation, and marine engineering – culminating with an associate's or bachelor’s degree. Seventy-nine apprentices earned honors, which combines academic and craft grades to determine overall performance. Fifteen graduates completed the program

AASA Hosts 8th Annual Black History Month Celebration The African American Shipbuilders Association hosted its 8th Annual Black History Month Celebration Feb. 22. This year’s theme was, “Power to Make a Change: Follow Your Dream.” Jack Ezzell, chief executive officer of Zel Technologies, LLC, served as the event’s guest speaker and in his remarks he spoke about embracing dreams and not being afraid to take risks. “You will never get to second base if you never leave first base,” Ezzell said. The after work event also included a performance by the company’s choir and and art exhibit featuring work of talented shipbuilders and their families. Roslyn Long (E83) has been coordinating artists for the annual event over the last four years, and not only does she call for local artists that work at the shipyard but she also reaches out to their family and friends. “Overall, the program was very inspiring as it demonstrated our history from where we were, how far we have come and where we are going. There was a diverse group of people in attendance, which helps us bridge

a gap to understand and respect each other’s differences and cultures,” said AASA Event Co-lead Robin Lee (O53). Emmanuel Onafeko (E47) added, “I learned that you can achieve your dreams by standing tall and being confident in what you believe – always being persistent and determined to do more than what is just required." Candice McDougald (O74), granddaughter of participating artist Sherman Watkins, also attended the event. "I was so happy that my grandfather was able to showcase his award-winning artwork," she said. "Since I was a little girl he has inspired me with his artistic visions and I was extremely proud to have him share his art with my fellow shipbuilders.”

Corporate Credit Cardholders - New Replacement Cards To improve service and increase card security, J.P. Morgan is moving to another processing system, which will require replacement cards to be issued to all cardholders. All cardholders should remember to update their profile in the Adtrav online booking tool under "payment options." For additional details on the changes and delivery information visit the Travel website on Homeport.

Last week, more than 100 company leaders met for a business forum hosted by Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin. Topics discussed during the meeting included 2016 financial performance, the long range strategic plan, a recap of a recent leadership meeting attended by company vice presidents, and the specific goals and objectives for 2017. “This year, our priority will remain on our four pillars of safety, quality, cost and schedule,” said Mulherin. “We will also continue our commitment to being an ethical, inclusive and diverse workplace.” Information discussed during the forum will be cascaded to employees in the coming weeks, including an aspirational message about the future direction of the company, which was crafted by NNS vice presidents during their leadership meeting: Newport News Shipbuilding is leveraging innovative 21st century technologies to digitally and physically redefine shipbuilding – dramatically changing the way we and our Navy customer design, deliver, operate and maintain future ships. We will attract, develop, and retain the best people and leverage the power of their diverse ideas to change the way we work, creating as yet unimagined new opportunities to make shipbuilding simpler, safer, smarter and more efficient. Our transformation will enable us to more quickly and effectively respond to our nation’s call for the world’s most capable naval warships – building on our 131 year legacy of ALWAYS GREAT SHIPS!

Job Family Promotion Changes Are Coming There are now two paths for Newport News Shipbuilding employees to be promoted to a higher level position.

Employees are reminded to search the "Current HII Employees" portal at www.buildyourcareer.com for the latest job openings.

Effective March 6, 2017, in an effort to increase career opportunities for employees, employees that are salaried Individual Contributors (levels 1-2) will have the ability to apply for a higher position within the same job family (e.g. Accountant 2 to Accountant 3) as long as they meet the basic qualifications for the job and have been in their current position for at least six months. This change is for new job openings (levels 1-3) that are posted on March 6 or after.

In addition, the Job Family Promotion (JFP) process still affords eligible employees the opportunity for promotion each year without applying for an open position. If you have a question concerning the changes to the JFP process, contact your HR Business Partner, visit the Compensation website or send an e-mail to buildyourcareer@hii-co.com.

... complex as the ones we build, it takes everybody across the yard – each trade, each shop and each crew, working in unison to deliver that ship and maximize performance,” he said. Nuclear Insulator Annie Ricks attended the event and said that it’s great when leaders come out to talk to shipbuilders. “You’ve got to put your all into everything and be proud of what you do,” she said. “It’s rewarding when I see the ships on the news. I can tell my grandchildren, ‘that’s what grandma does.’” Capt. Mike Stevens, who oversees the VCS Program for the Navy and has taken ships to sea as a former commanding officer, said that the quality of the ships built by Newport News Shipbuilding brings him and each Navy sailor peace of mind when they are halfway around the world. “It’s really comforting when you’re out there on a nuclear-powered submarine so far from home and so far from any safe harbor, and the only thing you’re worried about is if the ice cream machine works or not. That’s because of the quality you impart in these submarines.”

VCS Program Director Justin Byrum reminded shipbuilders to continue to take ownership of their work. “All 5,000 shipbuilders in the VCS program, whether you’re designing a product, procuring a product, warehousing a part, manufacturing a part, installing, building or testing,” said Byrum. “Whatever your role is, your role is vital. Every piece or part you touch, each piece of paper or hardware you deliver for the ship is just as important in delivering freedom to our nation.” Watch a highlights video of the event on MyNNS or the NNS to Go app. The VCS Program has established the Virginia Performance Acceleration Program (VPAP) to capture and track implementation of shipbuilder ideas. VCS employees who have ideas for improving safety, quality, cost or schedule, should contact Rob Gies (X80) via email or at 688-6446.

NNS President Matt Mulherin addressed the graduates as the shipyard’s newest leaders. “Leadership is not a title or position,” he said. “It is an action—a responsibility. A leader produces results and sets examples. You, indeed, are all leaders, and I commend and applaud you on this defining moment in your shipbuilding careers and in your lives.”

“As we continue on in our careers, we have become specialist, leaders and innovators," he said. "We will for now and always be Apprentice graduates and we will continue to master our craft. We will apply all of the experiences we have to whatever challenge we face.”

Rep. Kay Granger Tours NNS On Feb. 24, Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas) toured Newport News Shipbuilding with NNS President Matt Mulherin. The tour included progress updates on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and Enterprise's (CVN 65) inactivation. Granger also learned about Newport News’ role in the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs. “The exceptional shipbuilders at Newport News are vital to building our Navy’s future fleet,” Granger said. “It is their skill and expertise that ensures our nation’s nuclear shipbuilding enterprise delivers what is needed to support our national defense. In addition, I am pleased by the shipyard’s efforts to control costs on these complex warships because we must increase the size of our Navy in these dangerous times. This shipyard and other advanced American manufacturers across the country are absolutely critical to keeping us safe.” Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com to read the entire release.
