Shipbuilders Prepare for Washington Christening This week, shipbuilders around the yard will continue final preparations for Washington’s (SSN 787) Christening Ceremony on Saturday, March 5. Sheet Metal Shipbuilder Arlene Quinn (X32) and other shipbuilders working in the company’s Sail Loft Shop have been working around the clock to complete Washington’s bow flag that will be placed over the submarine’s bow unit during the christening ceremony. “The pressure is on, but the final product is worth it,” said Quinn. “Everything has to be just so... because the flag is so big, everyone will see it.” The Communications Division is currently in the process of distributing tickets to employees who requested tickets to the event. Employees who did not get tickets to the event, can watch a live webcast of the ceremony at www.washingtonchristening.com beginning at 11 a.m. During the ceremony, Ship’s Sponsor Elisabeth Mabus, daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, will perform the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship’s bow during the christening ceremony. Use #SSN787 on Twitter and Instagram to follow the event and congratulate the shipbuilders. Watch a highlights video on Yardnet of employees in the Sail Loft sewing Washington’s bow flag.
