A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
President Trump Visits NNS President Donald Trump visited Newport News Shipbuilding March 2 to give remarks centered around his plans for a major build of the nation's military. The trip came two days after his speech to congress, where he proposed a boost in defense spending of $54 billion. When the President arrived at NNS, he held a round-table discussion with shipyard leadership, Navy officials, shipbuilders and sailors and was given a tour of aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
Prior to his remarks, shipbuilders presented the President with a steel paperweight with a raised "45" machined into it. The backside of the weight was engraved with the following words: "Aircraft carrier steel to commemorate President Donald J. Trump on board USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) March 2, 2017." Shipbuilder Juanita Bivens (O82) led the pledge of allegiance and the CVN 78 Choir sang the national anthem.
Ship Sponsor and former first daughter Susan Ford Bales introduced President Trump to a crowd of 4,000 guests. As President Trump took the stage, he said, "The soon-to-be commissioned Gerald R. Ford USS -- what a place. Congratulations to all of the men and women who helped build it. This is American craftsmanship at its biggest, at its best, at its finest. American workers are the greatest anywhere in the world..." CONTINUED ON PG 2
Onsite Prescription Safety Glasses Program Coming to NNS Newport News Shipbuilding's Health and Safety Department has arranged an opportunity for employees to purchase prescription safety glasses onsite. Beginning March 15, 2017, NNS will grant onsite access to Walman Optical, a provider of prescription safety glasses, at various locations across the yard to provide convenient access to personal protective equipment (PPE) for employees. All prescription safety glasses styles available from Walman Optical have been approved for use at NNS. View a flier about the program or read the EH&S "Take 5" for times and locations. More information about the program will be available in future editions of Currents. For questions, contact Brittany Dorsey (O27) 688-6077.

President Trump Visits NNS CONTINUED FROM PG 1
"... This warship, and all who serve on it, should be a source of shared pride for our nation." "After years of endless budget cuts that have impaired our defenses, I am calling for one of the largest defense-spending increases in history," Trump said. "Our military requires sustained, stable funding to meet the growing needs placed on our defense. In these troubled times, our Navy is the smallest it's been since World War I. That's a long time ago. In fact, I just spoke with Navy and industry leaders and have discussed my plans to undertake a major expansion of our entire Navy fleet, including having the 12-carrier Navy we need." Following his remarks, President Trump shook hands with shipbuilders and sailors before leaving the aircraft carrier.

"After hearing the President speak, I was very encouraged about the financial future of the shipyard," said Shipbuilder Jennifer Harris (T56). "It was a proud day for shipbuilders to have him come here and thank us for what we do every day." As we celebrate Women's History Month in March, take time to recognize the great achievements and contributions of women at NNS and throughout our nation's history. NNS Trailblazers Mabel Harris (X18), Shirley Langston (X74) and Danyelle Saunders (O41) are featured on this year's company-wide poster commemorating the month. NNS to Be Featured on CNBC March 10 CNBC visited Newport News Shipbuilding on Feb. 24. During the visit, reporters interviewed HII President and CEO Mike Petters and filmed shipbuilders working in the Foundry. Video taken during the visit will be used in conjunction with video taken at Ingalls Shipbuilding for an upcoming segment of "Where the Jobs Are," a CNBC series that highlights various companies and employees. The shipbuilding segment is scheduled to air this Friday, March 10.
NNS Hosts 6th Annual Engineering Career Days Newport News Shipbuilding’s Career Pathways, in collaboration with Peninsula Engineers Council, hosted its sixth annual Engineering Career Days Feb. 23-24. Representatives from NASA and Jefferson Lab also showcased potential opportunities in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. More than 550 students from 59 Peninsula and Southside middle and high schools participated in the event. Green Run High School Physics Teacher Brian Meechan was selected for NNS’ teacher internship program last summer and wanted to bring his students to learn more about shipbuilding. “I didn’t truly know who Newport News Shipbuilding was until last summer,” Meechan said. “That experience helped me to understand the bigger picture and the importance of what you all do, and I want my students to be able to make those same connections.”
It was also the first year that NNS featured staff from the Emergency Response Organization. “When we talk about engineering, it seems like a defined end result for your education, but the reality is that engineering leads to so many other things,” said Larry Trantham (O67). It’s reassuring to know that bright young kids are coming in and are going to someday change the face of engineering.” Ben Becker, a sophomore at Cox High School in Virginia Beach, said that he enjoyed NASA’s Drag Race to Mars activity, which challenges students to create a landing device for a marshmallow. “It’s so complex, but it’s also really cool and accessible,” he said. Norfolk Public School Superintendent Dr. Melinda Boone is thrilled that companies like NNS invest the time and energy into

STEM outreach and was excited to see the passion on students’ faces during the event. “Tomorrow’s careers aren’t even being thought of right now,” Boone said. “But programs like these are critical to fill the needs of careers in our community and our country. For students to be able to get their hands on challenges like these, it fuels the future workforce of America.”

Job Family Promotion Changes Effective today (March 6, 2017), in an effort to increase career opportunities for employees, employees that are salaried individual contributors (levels 1-2) will have the ability to apply for a higher position within the same job family (e.g. Accountant 2 to Accountant 3) as long as they meet the basic qualifications for the job and have been in their current position for at least six months. This change is for new job openings (levels 1-3) that are posted on March 6 or after. Employees are reminded to search the "Current HII Employees" portal at www.buildyourcareer.com for the latest job openings. The Job Family Promotion (JFP) process still affords eligible employees the opportunity for promotion each year without applying for an open position. If you have a question concerning the changes to the JFP process, contact your HR Business Partner, visit the Compensation website or send an e-mail to buildyourcareer@hii-co.com.
