Shipbuilders Participate in 2nd Annual One City Marathon More than 100 Newport News Shipbuilding employees participated in the One City Marathon, hosted by the City of Newport News, Sunday, March 13. NNS employees participated in each of the four “One City” events – the marathon, Maritime 8K, marathon relay and nautical mile.

Process Improvement Analyst Laurel Easterson (X27) ran the marathon alongside her husband Bruce Easterson, CVN 72 program director. “I think it’s very important that Newport News Shipbuilding participates in events like the One City Marathon – it’s one of the reasons we decided to run. Sailors began moving aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Feb. 26. The move marks a major milestone for both the crew and shipbuilders, bringing the ship one step closer to completing its refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) and returning to the fleet. “This is a major milestone for the CVN 72 RCOH team because it symbolizes the ship’s first step toward its return to an operational status,” said Bruce Easterson, CVN 72 program director. “We could not be prouder of the NNS and Navy team that worked together to make this happen. Our shipbuilders are excited about this because now the ship’s crew will eat, sleep and work onboard for the remaining nine months of the RCOH.” David White (X70) said, “Crew move aboard is important... This is a team effort by Ship’s Force, the government, and Newport News.” Sailors settled into berthing spaces and enjoyed a special meal in the ship’s newly refurbished Aft Mess Decks to mark the occasion. “It’s remarkable that we’re here today, cutting the ribbon on the crew’s mess decks and... NNS Shuttle Service Reaches its 1-Millionth Passenger Milestone Every morning around 4:30 a.m., buses operated by Newport News Shipbuilding drivers and Newton’s Bus Service are staged in the North Yard to begin the morning shuttle run. Shipbuilders are safely transported to and from several convenient locations throughout the shipyard. On March 3, the bus service transported it’s 1-millionth passenger, James Elliott. “I’ve been using the service since August 2015 and have had a great experience. The buses are very dependable and always on time,” said Elliott. For more information, visit the Park-and-Ride Shuttle Service website.

Meet NNS’ Fire Marshal As Newport News Shipbuilding’s Fire Marshal, Troy Long is responsible for administering the company’s Fire Prevention and Control Program, which includes developing and implementing fire safety policies, procedures and best practices to protect all personnel, facilities and ships from fire hazards. Long also promotes overall fire prevention operations, enforces fire codes, and performs fire inspections and investigations. Currents staff recently interviewed Long. Read his responses below: What do you enjoy most about being NNS’ Fire Marshal? Helping to keep the employees of this company safe. I love going out in the yard to speak with employees and developing relationships. It’s nice to get emails, phone calls or even have people come to the fire house to talk to me about any questions or express concerns they have. Do you interact with NNS’ Fire Wardens? Yes. I feel the fire wardens are an extension of the fire department. They are usually the first ones to let us know if there is a fire-related issue or concern. Our fire wardens are a tremendous asset to the company and have many duties and responsibilities that help keep personnel and property safe in the shipyard. What is the most challenging aspect of your job? Working with the programs to reduce the number of fire-related incidents that occur during hot-work operations. It’s imperative that we as a company continue to work together and become better educated on fire prevention and control. Through education, training, and inspections, we can work together to make the shipyard a much safer place to work, and prevent fires from occurring. If employees see a fire hazard in their building or workspace, what should they do? Employees should notify a fire warden responsible for that area if they believe there is a fire hazard so the fire warden can address any issues. Do you have a message for employees? Work to your procedures. Be familiar with the Fire Prevention and Control Manual for best fire prevention practices. Recognize… Evaluate… Control and report anything that appears to be a fire hazard. If you do not know who your fire warden is, you can find the Fire Warden list on the Health and Safety website on Yardnet.

Pictured (L to R): Dan Chabot (X70) and Bruce Easterson, CVN 72 program director.

Shipbuilder Steering the Way Construction Superintendent, Dan Chabot, was recently recognized by USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Program Director Bruce Easterson, for his display of ethical conduct. In January, after the CVN 72 team celebrated the milestone of turning on steam in the propulsion plant, Chabot noticed steam emitting from the Outfitting Berth 1. He took it upon himself to investigate the cause to discover that the steam was escaping from a flange leak to the temporary steam system. Chabot also noticed the safety concern for other shipbuilders in the area due to the leak being in the vicinity of the ship’s main power source. “Dan could have easily looked the other way, however, he didn’t,” said Easterson. “Dan immediately contacted his management about the issue. Dan’s leadership qualities and high ethical standards prevented what could have resulted in serious injury. His efforts also led to the detection of five additional loose flanges that could have resulted in a major quality issue. Congratulations on a job well done.”

NNS Sponsors 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition Newport News Shipbuilding is a sponsor of the 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition Stronghold at Churchland High School in Portsmouth this weekend, March 19-20. Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, will kick off the event Saturday. There will be more than 20 NNS employees, 16 mentors and two judges participating in the competition. The event is free and open to the public and will bring 35 of the best High School robotic teams together from across the country. This competition is designed to simulate real world engineering and design challenges by making teams work together to problem solve, design and purchase material quickly and efficiently. The theme this year is a castle tower defense game, where teams of three will compete with robots to cross defenses, shoot boulders and scale the tower to earn points. Visit FIRST Robotics Yardnet website for additional information.

Sub Shop Team Comes Together in a Time of Need Sub Shop Welder Dallas Simmons (X18) received news just before Thanksgiving that his son Malcolm, and cousin Deandre, both in their early 20’s were involved in a tragic car accident leaving them both paralyzed. While Simmons’ son spent the last 14 weeks recovering in a rehabilitation facility, Simmons and his fellow co-workers jumped into action. Collectively the team donated their time and carpentry skills to upgrade the existing deck and add a handicap accessible ramp to Simmons’ Surry home. “After I went out to assess the house to have a better understanding of support and materials needed, it wasn’t hard to pull a team of coworkers together to help,” said X11 General Forman Charles Wilson, who spearheaded the initiative. “We all felt compelled as his work family to help him in his time of need.” Along with Simmons and Wilson, X11 Foreman Kenneth Bell, X11 Foreman Rickey Jones,

Pictured (L to R): Darrell Dildy (X11), Ricky Jones (X11), Charles Wilson (X11), Kenneth Bell (X11) and Travius Haskett (X18). Not pictured Dallas Simmons (X18).

X11 Fitter Darryl Dildy and X18 Welder Travius Haskett worked together to complete the projects within five hours on a Saturday, leaving plenty of time for Malcom’s homecoming. All materials for the project were donated by Eugenia Potts (X18) and Alonzo Harris (X18), along with the help of other co-workers.

...both work at the shipyard and are committed shipbuilders – we wanted to support the company and the race.”

Sailors Begin Moving Aboard Lincoln ... getting ready to sit down and eat the first meal on board with our shipmates,” said Capt. Ronald Ravelo, Lincoln’s commanding officer. “I’m immensely proud of the hard work our sailors have put into getting us to this point. I’m also proud of our teammates from Newport News Shipbuilding and the various other contractors that have made this day possible. None of us could have done it on our own; today is a true testament to the enduring partnership between the U.S. Navy and our shipbuilder partners.”

“It is all about taking back our spaces and getting back to work as if we were at sea again,” said Ship’s Serviceman Seaman Temarcus Jones, who provided the barbershop’s first haircut to the command master chief. “I am looking forward to sailors coming in for a trim and getting closer to the normal living and working routine aboard the ship.” Watch a highlights video on Yardnet.

Fred Bowers (E44) participated in the relay with co-workers. “Participating in the race is fun for me because I get to experience it with my co-workers,” he said. “Leading up to the race, we trained together and got to spend more time with each other outside of work. It’s really nice to be able to motivate each other to run and to be healthy.” Welding Engineer Sujin Kim (O37) also took part in the relay with co-workers. “It’s nice to be part of something bigger than the shipyard and to be a part of the community,” she said. At the end of the race, the shipyard had a tent with a prize wheel and giveaways. Watch a highlights video of the One City Marathon on Yardnet. Visit www.onecitymarathon.com to view race results.
