NNS Shipbuilders Participate in Inaugural One City Marathon More than 200 Newport News Shipbuilding employees became part of history by participating in the inaugural One City Marathon, hosted by the City of Newport News, Sunday, March 15. NNS employees participated in each of the four “One City” events - the marathon, Maritime 8K, marathon relay and nautical mile. Twenty-seven NNS employees ran the 26.2mile marathon, which began at Newport News Park and ended at the Victory Arch downtown.

Daniel Moniak (X18) and Christine Schaffner (T50) were the first male and female shipbuilders to complete the marathon.

which also included NNS shipbuilders Tosha Revere, Daniel De La Cerda and Christian Poblete.

Danielle Martin (X73) also ran the marathon. “I’ve been preparing for the race since last March,” she said. “Running the race with special NNS bibs made me proud to be a shipbuilder. It felt good to know that my company was supporting the community and runners.”

“It was a gorgeous day for running,” said Entrikin, who was the first-leg-runner on the team. “The 7.9 mile route that I ran was very beautiful and everyone was upbeat. I’m looking forward to participating again next year.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

... Amanda Hall (O68) also participated in the relay event. “As a shipbuilder, it was great to be a part of something so big,” she said. “And then to end the race right here at the shipyard was very special.” Many NNS employees who did not participate in the race volunteered at “cheer stations” along the marathon route or at the NNS tent at the One City, One Celebration event. Two ISCVN Shipbuilders Recognized for Ethical Actions in the Community On March 11, Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers, recognized Matt Joyner (X75) and Jerry Faison III (E09) for their prompt actions that saved the lives of two local citizens in February. “Both of the situations that each of you took part in could have ended in tragedy,” said Miner. “But each of you put others first and were able to turn a very bad situation into a positive one. We appreciate what you do every day and how you represent what it means to be a shipbuilder, looking out for others both at work and in our communities.” Miner presented each employee with a special coin and Newport News Shipbuilding gear in honor of their community efforts.

Joyner Saves Woman from Burning Car Joyner was on his way to church with his family on Feb. 4 when he saw a car engulfed in flames on the side of the road in Hampton. “I immediately stopped my van and ran over to the burning vehicle,” he said. “As I approached, I could see a person through the window. Luckily two other people had also stopped to help and one had a hammer, so we were able to break the car window.” Joyner safely pulled the individual out of the

car and carried her away from the burning vehicle. “Emergency personnel arrived on scene shortly after and transferred the woman to the hospital,” he said. “It’s a miracle that she’s alive.”

Faison Takes Action to Rescue Boy During the Feb. 17 snow storm, Faison was home with his family when he and his wife noticed some boys outside playing around the pond behind their house in Virginia Beach. Within minutes, one of the boys fell through the ice. “I immediately went outside and ran to where the boys were,” said Faison. “A few of my neighbors came out to help as well. One of the guys had a rope and we were able to pull the boy from the water.” As emergency personnel arrived on scene, they took the boy to Faison’s home to let him get warm by the fireplace. “It’s great that we were all at home that day and saw the incident” said Faison III. “I’d hope anyone in that situation would do the same for my child.” Faison was recognized by News Channel 3 with a “People Taking Action Award” for his help in saving the boy’s life.

NNS Employees Reminded of Responsibility to Report Suspicious Contacts Have you ever been approached by someone who was extremely interested in your work at Newport News Shipbuilding? Have you ever received a phone call, out of the blue, from someone asking to become a vendor for the company? Have you ever been asked outright for information about your job or our products by someone you barely knew? While these may be innocent or even legitimate business contacts, they are also opportunities for foreign collectors, and are known as suspicious contacts or unsolicited requests for information. If you are approached on the

street, on the phone, on social media, or in an email by someone asking questions about your work, ask yourself, “Why is this person asking me this? Do they have a genuine need-to-know?” All NNS employees should be proud of their work, but part of that work is making sure information given to you to perform your job is kept secure. If someone you barely know has a NEED-TO-KNOW, they would probably have already received this information from a source who is familiar with them and their job. If you think you have encountered a suspicious

contact, don’t provide any information, tell the person you will get back to them. Make note of any information that can be used to identify the person. Need-to-know is a fundamental Operation Security (OPSEC) principle. If you discuss, process or otherwise handle sensitive unclassified or classified information while at NNS, you are responsible for confirming whether someone has a valid need-to-know and proper clearance level if necessary prior to providing access to or disclosing that information. Report violations of this OPSEC principle, and all suspicious contacts, to Security at 380-4031.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading in March. In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.
