Warner Arrives at NNS for Post Shakedown Availability USS John Warner (SSN 785) is back at Newport News Shipbuilding for its Post Shakedown Availability (PSA). The submarine arrived at NNS earlier this month and officially began its PSA work March 7. “Every new construction ship goes through a planned availability shortly after its delivery to the U.S. Navy,” said Justin Byrum, postdelivery superintendent. “Typical scope included in the PSA includes

modernization work and class design changes identified during the warranty period.” Warner is the first VCS submarine to have a PSA contract awarded to NNS as an extension of the existing Block III contract. It is also the first VCS PSA contracted to be complete within six months, due to it being a nondry docking availability. CONTINUED ON PG 5

NNS ERGs Host Expo Newport News Shipbuilding Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) hosted an expo March 22. The event was an opportunity for employees to learn more about each organization and what they have to offer. “The expo provided a lot of information about each ERG,” said Charles Spivey, vice president of United Steelworkers Local 8888. “When you bring people together, it provides an opportunity for them to share their backgrounds and perspectives on things.” NNS currently has six ERGs, including its newest group STRIDE (Shipbuilders Together Realizing Inclusion, Diversity and Equality), which was founded this month. The goal of STRIDE is to create dialogue and visibility on LGBT issues. STRIDE is open to all HII employees. “During the expo we had a lot of employees interested in STRIDE and how they could get involved,” said Jeremy Bustin (O29), acting chair. “In the near future, we will be electing officers. It’s a great leadership... CONTINUED ON PG 2

The groups provide opportunities for personal and professional development, leadership, mentoring, volunteerism, cultural enrichment and community involvement. They also support the company’s recruiting, retention, diversity and corporate citizenship programs. Membership is free and open to all employees. Visit the ERG Yardnet website for more information or contact individual ERG Chairs to learn how you can join or get involved. For general ERG-related questions or questions about starting a new ERG, contact Xavier Beale (O18) at 534-1992 or via email.

WiSE Celebrates Women’s History Month Across HII Divisions On March 10, Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) hosted a Women’s History Month event to celebrate the contributions of the women of Ingalls, past and present. The theme of the event was “Writing Women Back into History.” The event was held at Ingalls Shipbuilding and was broadcast by live video conference to WiSE members at Newport News Shipbuilding. Current Master Shipbuilders were also recognized during the event. Kellye Walker, corporate vice president and general counsel for HII, was the keynote speaker. She delivered a message on the four R’s: Real, Relationships, Resilience and Readiness. “We are writing tomorrow’s history today,” Walker said. “If we do each of these things, not only will we be able to write women back into history, we’ll define it.”

Arlene Easley, president of WiSE at Ingalls, right, presents 100-year-old former shipbuilder, Lorraine Boyd Gray, with a certificate as an honorary member of WiSE. Gray is accompanied by her niece Patty Tallent, WiSE member at Ingalls.

Penny Fairley, Material Handling manager and WiSE member, served as the event’s master of ceremonies (MC).

“We want to ensure that women continue to play key roles in leading and directing our company into the future,” Fairley said. “This event was also an opportunity to celebrate diversity.”

Eight Foremen Complete FQS Process

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

NNS Supports SN3 in New Mexico Newport News Shipbuilding and the Carlsbad SN3 office are working together to support efforts at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). WIPP is the nation’s only nuclear waste repository and is located in the remote Chihuahuan Desert 30 miles from Carlsbad, New Mexico. The plant experienced a fire and radiological release event in February 2014, resulting in the closure of the facility. An overall WIPP recovery plan to resume operations has been developed requiring expedited execution of projects with significantly more engineering deliverables than historically required at WIPP. As a result of SN3’s reach back capability to Newport News Shipbuilding, two NNS employees agreed to temporarily work out west to help with WIPP recovery projects. Mechanical Engineer Vince Gomes (E83) and Modeling and Simulation Systems Engineer Travis Evans (E04) are contributing their skills to the recovery and eventual restart of the WIPP repository. Both are enjoying New Mexico.

In February, eight Newport News Shipbuilding foremen completed the final step in the Foremen Qualification Standards (FQS) process by completing the General Foremen’s Proficiency Board held in the Management Development Center. Implemented in 2012, FQS is a tool used by general foremen to mentor, track progress and establish a framework for successful performance.

Pictured (L to R): David Washburn (X10), Ashley Strand (X73), Ty Battle (X73) and Ben Smail (O22). Not pictured; Matthew Gular (O22), Cory Williams Sr. (X67), Mike Boguess (X82) and Andre Smith (X82).

Upon attaining proficiency on all tasks in the guide, the general foremen recommends their foremen to appear before a board of peer general foremen. The board evaluates the candidate through a series of questions related to how the foreman demonstrates the desired leadership and management behaviors on

the job. The process is rigorous and requires a significant investment in time from all participants. Since the program’s inception, 98 foremen have successfully completed the process. The next FQS proficiency board is scheduled for June 2016.

NNS’ Long Standing History of Serving Meals Newport News Shipbuilding has a long history of serving meals to employees. One of the first records of lunch being served at the shipyard was in the spring of 1893. At that time, Amanda Lipford, wife of a NNS shipbuilder, began bringing hot lunches into the yard for her husband and other employees. She served her first lunches at the old bending shed near Dry Dock 1 and later at the old stable as the demand for her lunches increased. Lipford walked three miles to NNS each day with a basket of lunches on her head and was always on time. Today’s canteens at the shipyard continue to be a vital resource for serving employees a hot meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Currently, NNS has 22 operating canteens. Seven of the canteens are newly established and five have been recently renovated as “blue canteens” for the waterfront. On average, the canteens serve close to 650,000 customers each year which is close to 2,500 meals per day. NNS Food Services Operations and its Vendor Partners are committed to serving employees a wholesome product with the highest level of courtesy and efficiency each day. Visit the Food Services website for canteen locations and menus.

Awareness events equip shipbuilders with the knowledge and empowerment to make positive changes to improve their health and wellbeing.”

Warner Arrives at NNS for Post Shakedown Availability CONTINUED FROM PG 1

“This is a big deal for the company,” said X31 Foreman Josh Flint. “It’s also an opportunity for the VCS Program to showcase what we do best each and every day. Seeing the interaction between the crew of Warner and the men and women from various trades all focused on one end result – getting Warner back to sea. It’s why I’m proud to be a shipbuilder.” Mechanic Troy Williams (X43) added, “Post Shakedown Availability gives Newport News Shipbuilding the opportunity to get back into a business we had years ago. It shows that we are deserving of the challenge, but most of all, it gives the shipyard another way of preserving our future business.” Cmdr. Burt Canfield, commanding officer of SSN 785, considers the PSA a joint effort between NNS and Warner’s crew to return the submarine back to sea, mission-ready as quickly as possible. “With the growing number of missions and no foreseeable increase in the number of submarine platforms, PSAs’ focus is squarely centered on first-time quality,” he said. “The excellent work of Newport News Shipbuilding is directly contributing to our nation’s liberty.” Warner is on schedule to complete its PSA later this year.
