NNS Delivers First Redesigned VCS Bow 4 l 2 l 2018

Just a few weeks ago, Newport News Shipbuilding shipped the bow section of Vermont (SSN 792) – the first boat of the Virginia-Class Submarine Program’s Block IV – to General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, to be joined with the rest of the hull.

Vermont’s bow – and the rest of Block IV – includes significant design changes aimed at reducing life-cycle maintenance. The design changes, combined with late material availability, created challenges that shipbuilders overcame, according to Construction Superintendent Scott Whitmore.

NNS Commemorating National Welding Month Newport News Shipbuilding is highlighting the importance of first-time quality as it recognizes April as National Welding Month and kicks off an awareness campaign called "Make it Match." Throughout the month, NNS is spotlighting the "Make it Match" process for welders: making sure the base material, filler metal and preheat/interpass temperatures match the authorizing documentation. “Welding at NNS is a core process, and this campaign’s goal is to bring awareness to how critical it is that our process is under control at all times,” said X11/X18/O68 Trades Director Joe Sabol. “Whether you are a tack welder or a pipe or structural welder in the shops or on...

“These design changes resulted in the structural rebuild of the sail – which integrated non-corrosive metals and composite materials that have not been used on prior hulls,” he said. Although this impacted the schedule, Whitmore said there were “extensive lessons learned” from this first bow that have already been applied to future ships. “This will become a great cost reduction for the VCS team and the Navy for the life of the ship,” said General Foreman Vernon Silver. “In the future, the trades will receive a completely outfitted sail cap and be able to land it, install the mechanisms to the alreadyfunctional doors and fit them to their adjacent coamings, dramatically cutting time from the build process of the sail for X11 and X43.” The Block IV bow also includes a redesigned Light-Weight Wide Aperture Array (LWWAA), which allowed for a 36 percent reduction in installation time. “The new LWWAA design allows us to achieve proper alignment the first time. It eliminates...

Shame on us if we don’t take every opportunity to do the very best that we can to leave the strongest legacy possible.” Rochelle Robbins (O62) gave a women’s history spoken word presentation during the event, and WiSE Woman Award winners and female Master Shipbuilders were also honored. Master Shipbuilder Annette Saunders (X76) attended the event and said it was “very informative.” Saunders also said she was thrilled when Boykin was named president last year.

WiSE Hosts Women's History Month Event Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) celebrated Women’s History Month with an event March 27 that featured Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin. Boykin, the first woman to lead the company, participated in a “WiSE Talk,” providing insight into her background as well as her career at NNS. She also gave an overview of the NNSFORWARD Strategy – which she said is intertwined with inclusion and diversity – and talked about the importance of being prepared to take on leadership roles. “We all leave a legacy. Every decision we make is a stone in the wall of our legacy,” Boykin said. “We have to choose to positively impact the people around us, the customers we serve

“We live in a male-dominated world, but women are backbones to a lot and don’t always get recognized for it,” she said. “I really enjoyed the program, and I thought it was great for them to recognize female Master Shipbuilders.” Sarah McDonald (X48) – who won a raffle at the event for a mentoring session with Vice President of Submarine Construction Dave Bolcar – said it was her first time participating in a WiSE activity. “I enjoyed it,” she said. “I’m fairly new to the company so getting a chance to hear the president talk about her mission and goals for the company was nice.”

Shipbuilder Receives Engineering Award Chris Story (O30), the Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) lead for Newport News Shipbuilding’s Quality Division, is this year’s recipient of the Peninsula Engineers Council’s Doug Ensor Young Engineer of the Year Award. He received the award during the council’s annual banquet in February during National Engineers Week. The Doug Ensor Award recognizes contributions to the profession of engineering, significant technical accomplishments and community involvement during the early phase of an individual’s career. “There were several very deserving candidates this year, so I was honored and humbled to be selected as the recipient,” Story said. Story came to NNS in 2008 to work in technology development. Before taking on his current role, Story led Laboratory Services Department’s metallurgy, mechanical test and metals analysis section for about four years. “I have had a lot of opportunities to grow and develop in the shipyard,” he said. “I’ve worked with a lot of great people and my managers have always encouraged and challenged me. The teams that I have been a

the ship, it is vital that everyone – from the foreman assigning the work to the welder striking the arc – gets it right.” It is important to "Make it Match" because failure to do so can lead to violations and result in rework, weld joint failure, loss of customer confidence, schedule delays, negative cost impacts and could endanger lives. The person performing the welding is the last line of defense for preventing a violation. College students learn about career opportunities at Newport News Shipbuilding during a recruiting event in the company's mobile experience (MX) trailer.

Talent Acquisition Wraps Up Spring Recruiting Season Newport News Shipbuilding Talent Acquisition wrapped up university spring recruiting season March 20 at Old Dominion University. At ODU, NNS employees shared information about jobs and the company’s digital shipbuilding capabilities with students during the career fair and tours of the iDS MX trailer. Since January, Talent Acquisition has visited several universities – including Christopher Newport, William & Mary, Penn State, NC State, Auburn, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech, Hampton, North Carolina A&T, Virginia Military Institute, West Virginia, Norfolk State and Old Dominion – meeting more than 700 students. “College recruiting is key for the overall long-term talent pipeline and an important component of the company’s inclusion and diversity initiatives,” said Siyani Blount, manager of Talent Acquisition. “Talent Acquisition partners with hiring departments to attract new talent who can bring innovative thought and outside-of-the-box thinking to keep the company cutting edge and competitive.” 2018 college summer interns will start work with NNS in May. For May college graduates, the company is currently hiring entry-level designers, engineers and planners.

NNS to Observe Workers' Memorial Day Newport News Shipbuilding will hold its second annual Workers’ Memorial Day event on Monday, April 30. Ceremonies will be held at 6:30 a.m., noon and 8 p.m. to accommodate shipbuilders on all shifts. Further details about this year’s memorial services will be communicated in upcoming editions of Currents. Workers' Memorial Day is held annually on April 28 to honor workers who have died on the job, acknowledge the grievous suffering experienced by families and communities, and serve as an opportunity to recommit to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all workers, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

“Being a good welder isn’t just about what you can do with the weld puddle, it’s about knowing what the customer wants you to do with it. You can’t produce quality work without knowing the procedure. That’s why we 'Make it Match,'” said X18 Foreman Scott Markwith. Look for more information about the "Make it Match" campaign in upcoming issues of Currents. In addition, information focusing on the "Make it Match" process will be cascaded in weekly crew talks and on posters, banners and shipyard monitors. “Join us in our recognition of National Welding Month to refocus and commit ourselves to getting it right each and every time,” Sabol said. The American Welding Society released a statement about the importance of welding in the daily lives of Americans. “Every day in thousands of shipyards, automotive assembly plants and construction sites, skilled welding professionals are working to build the structures and products on which the American economy depends. These professionals are behind the scenes welding the very backbone of industry and your world,” according to the statement.

...redundant steps in the process and also reduces the number of crane lifts and staging efforts. Overall, the job is much less stressful and results in a better quality product,” said Shipfitter Donte Scott (X11). Shipbuilders worked to further shorten the construction schedule through innovation. For example, with the help of Dimensional Control (O68) and input from craftsmen, a plan was developed to drill Retractable Bow Plane (RBP) tip seals off of the hull. “On previous boats, this part of the process was performed shipboard after the bow planes were fully installed and operational. By moving this work to the shop floor, the team was able to recover three weeks of schedule, improve cost, and most importantly, reduce the potential for accidents.” said Construction Superintendent Darrick Walker. Vermont is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy at Electric Boat in August 2019.

Honoring Master Shipbuilders Radiological Training and Nuclear Skills Management (O67) recently honored the knowledge and experience of the team’s eight Master Shipbuilders – those with 40 or more years of service to Newport News Shipbuilding – by posting their photos on a wall in Bldg. 907-3. More photos will be added as additional members of the team reach the milestone. Photo by Matt Hildreth

Building Ships With LEGOs Each year, the Virginia Ship Repair Foundation holds a LEGO Competition for local middle school students. Students are challenged to use mathematical, analytical and abstract thinking skills, as well as learning group dynamics and public speaking. Many Newport News Shipbuilding employees volunteer their time as technical advisers and judges. “The competition is very intense. This is my second year as a technical adviser, and I’m very impressed with the efforts of the students and the schools. My team, Blair Middle School, earned third place last year, and we hope to better that this year,” said Mike Varner (O26). This year, approximately 15 schools will compete to take home the coveted banner and prize money that helps raise awareness of the ship repair industry and the careers that come from it. Shipbuilders interested in becoming technical advisers should sign up at virginiashiprepair.org.
