A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding

Washington Completes Initial Sea Trials The newest Virginia-class submarine Washington (SSN 787) successfully completed its sea trials on Sunday, April 2. “The ship and its crew performed exceptionally well,” said Matt Needy, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support. “It was truly an amazing process to see the hundreds of suppliers and the many thousands of shipbuilders from both Newport News and Electric Boat work closely with the ship’s crew to bring this great warship to life.”

All systems, components and compartments were tested during the trials. The submarine submerged for the first time and operated at high speeds on the surface and underwater. Washington will undergo a round of acceptance trials before delivery to the Navy by Newport News. Construction of Washington, which began in September 2011, marked the beginning of the VCS program’s two-submarines-peryear build plan for Newport News. CONTINUED ON PG 2

The following video message from NNS President Matt Mulherin was sent to employees on April 3. Please take a moment to watch the video or read the message below. Dear Shipbuilders, I’d like to take a moment to speak with you about our inclusion and diversity (I&D) efforts. Hopefully you have seen the videos we began publishing last year about what I&D is and what it feels like to be excluded because of things like gender, race, appearance, height, weight and age.

Washington Sea Trials CONTINUED FROM PG 1

I want to thank the shipbuilders who volunteered to share their stories. You have helped all of us to better understand the unintentional biases people have. It’s only through honest conversations that we can move forward on our journey. With that in mind, we will be expanding our focus about why it’s important to be inclusive and to embrace diversity of thought.

Watch a video highlighting Washington sea trials and the VCS shipbuilders who built the ship. The video is available on MyNNS, the NNS to Go app, and the company's external website and social media pages.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a great leader who embodied these beliefs. He once said, “We must live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” April 4 marks the 49th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. I ask each of you to take a moment this week to remember him, to think about his mission, and to reflect on how far – or maybe in some respects how little – we’ve come since his death. From a company perspective, we’ll be conducting more interviews with shipbuilders this year, and you’ll soon be hearing their personal stories about how and why I&D matters. I encourage each of you to consider sharing your stories – either as part of our company-wide campaign or in your work teams. I cannot stress enough the importance of open and honest conversations about this topic. Thank you for your support, your consideration and your willingness to make a difference. Sincerely, Matt Mulherin President, Newport News Shipbuilding

Congratulations FQS Graduates Five new foremen completed the final step in the Foreman Qualification Standards (FQS) by completing the General Foreman's Proficiency Board in February. FQS is a program used by general foremen to mentor, track progress and establish a framework for successful performance. Upon completion of all tasks in the guide, foreman appear before a board of peer general foremen. The candidate is then evaluated through a series of questions related to how the foreman demonstrates the desired leadership and management behaviors on the job. The process is rigorous and requires significant time investment from all participants. Since the program's start in 2012, a total of 128 foremen have successfully completed the process.

North Yard Parking Impacts; 300 Additional Spaces to Be Added to North Hidens In April, approximately 408 parking spaces in the North Yard will be affected due to road and infrastructure construction in support of the Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF). Of the 408 spaces affected, 329 spaces will be returned as soon as possible in the coming months; 79 spaces will be permanently lost. View a map of the affected areas. In an effort to offset the loss of parking, the company will be expanding North Hidens by adding 300 new parking spaces during the month of April. North Hidens is a parking lot located off Warwick Blvd. and is available to all NNS employees. The company provides a free Park-and-Ride shuttle to and from the shipyard to this parking lot. When the new parking spaces are added to North Hidens, additional shuttle buses will be added to the Park-and-Ride route to accommodate the increase of shuttle users. The Park-and-Ride Shuttle operates from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. A Team That Works Together, Learns Together

2017 Earth Day Events

A Surface Preparation and Treatment (X33) crew participated in "Learning Day," March 30. The crew's leadership, Lead General Foremen Robert Patsell, General Foreman Hienz Trulley and Foreman Patti Richardson, lead the activity for the third shift crew. "We spent two hours guiding the crew through a series of interactive activity stations," said Patsell. "The activities were designed to educate crew members on procedural requirements, ethical principles for ensuring quality work, and important work-related facts." Marine Painter Nancy King said, "The activity was a fun way for us to come together to learn about the work requirements and be reminded of who our customers are. It means a lot that our leadership took time to plan this activity for us." Trulley said "Leaning Day" for the crew was very beneficial. "This team has been through a lot of change with foreman turnover, and each time a new foreman comes in, there are new expectations and leadership styles," he said. "This event gives us an opportunity to

Volunteer Cleanup bring them together, to show them that we care, and to encourage them to not lose focus of what needs to be done." The event concluded with Richardson providing a recap of the two hour session and left the crew with words of motivation. "We must all come to work every day with gratitude which can't be taught," she said. "We have to realize that there are a lot of people waiting for our jobs and we can't come in here every day as if someone owes us this job. We need to come in with gratitude and be grateful that we woke up and that we have somewhere to go to be able to provide for our families."

Shipbuilder Steering the Way Recently, while performing surveillance, Quality Analyst Kevin Roberson (K93) noticed a recall date was expired on a wire pendant holding a heavy piece of metal structure. Understanding that there could be potential for severe injury and equipment damage if the wire pendant were to fail, Roberson immediately informed Department X36, who took prompt action to move the structure into a safe condition. To recognize Roberson's attention to detail and swift action, Ron Murray, vice president of Quality, met with Roberson on March 17 to present him with a Level 1 Ethics Award. "Every day, employees in quality are in the field ensuring NNS products and services are meeting customer requirements, said Murray. "At the same time, these same folks are in the field ensuring that shipbuilders stay safe. Kevin's actions proved his

• Owners should document a complete description of their moped or scooter including the serial number and maintain the information in a safe place. • Owners should avoid chaining their mopeds and scooters overnight in areas where they are easily seen. Many of these thefts involve the suspects cutting the chains or locks. Detectives recommend storing them in a garage or other secure facility. • Avoid parking motorcycles out in the open and in poorly lit areas. As with mopeds and scooters, detectives suggest storing motorcycles out of sight in a garage or other out building or otherwise concealed from view as much as possible. If none of these measures are possible, detectives suggest parking motorcycles in brightly lit areas near other vehicles. Shipbuilders are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to *911 or 380-2222.
