Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Successfully Completes Builder’s Sea Trials Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) returned to Naval Station Norfolk Friday, April 14, after successfully completing builder’s sea trials. During the aircraft carrier’s time at sea, her systems, components and compartments were tested for the first time. The trials also include high-speed runs and demonstrate many of the carrier’s other capabilities. “In my 36 years with Newport News Shipbuilding, I’ve ridden many sea trials,” said NNS President Matt Mulherin. “While they have all been great experiences, this one was especially rewarding. I’ve been with this ship since 2001, when she was still just a design concept. To see her come to life and perform as she was designed and built to do is awe-inspiring and a testament to her shipbuilders and Navy crew.” Newport News shipbuilders partnered with Gerald R. Ford sailors and personnel from Naval Sea Systems Command to perform the sea trials tests. Among the sea trial participants were Adm. James Caldwell, director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, and... CONTINUED ON PG 2

CVN 78 Succesfully Completes Builder's Sea Trials CONTINUED FROM PG 1
...Rear Adm. Brian K. Antonio, program executive officer, aircraft carriers. “Everybody has to work together to really exercise the ship and take it through its final paces,” said Rolf Bartschi, vice president of CVN 78 Carrier Construction. “We work to test the systems and actually operate the ship out here at sea. It’s fantastic to be out and really see this ship come to life.” Susan Ford Bales, ship’s sponsor and President Gerald R. Ford’s daughter, was unable to participate in sea trials but shared in the excitement. “Completion of builder’s sea trials for Dad’s namesake aircraft carrier is the magnificent culmination of years of hard work,” she said. “I’m ecstatic and could not be prouder of the ship’s successful performance. CVN 78 is the mightiest ship ever built, and you can draw a straight line—a very straight line—as to why that is so: The ship is built by the greatest shipbuilders in the world, my fellow Newport News shipbuilders. I’m thrilled to add my congratulations and heartfelt thanks—as Dad most certainly would—to the entire

Newport News Shipbuilding team, and to the remarkable crew of the Ford, for their patriotic commitment to excellence and for a job well done—very well done. As the ship’s sponsor, I look forward with great excitement to commissioning the USS Gerald R. Ford into the fleet very soon.” Prior to delivery, the ship will undergo acceptance trials, conducted by U.S. Navy Board of Inspection and Survey representatives, to do a final test and evaluation of the ship’s systems and performance. Watch a highlights video of CVN 78 builder's sea trials and read a congratulatory message to shipbuilders from Rolf Bartschi, vice president of CVN 78 Carrier Construction. Photos from builder's trials will be available on the NNS to Go app later this week.
Shipbuilders to Be Recognized as Leaders in Manufacturing The Manufacturing Institute will recognize Shipbuilders Taylor Amponin (O41) and Pierrette Swan (K18) with the Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Emerging Leaders Award at a reception in Washington, D.C. Thursday, April 20. The annual award honors women who have demonstrated both excellence and leadership in their careers and who represent at all levels of the manufacturing industry. Amponin, who currently serves as the Lead System Engineer for NNS Dry Docks 1, 2 and 4 is being honored for her volunteer efforts with several professional organizations that introduce students to careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. She currently participates in the shipyard's Engineering and Information
Technology Summer Internship Mentor Program, which partners volunteer mentors with first-year college students who are interning at NNS for the summer. "I have always been passionate about manufacturing because I am fascinated with how so many small parts can come together to create something larger through a manufacturing process," said Amponin. "I love being able to watch something designed on paper come to life with the help of tools and manual labor." Swan, who began her career as a welder in 2011, is being honored for her achievements as a welder, as well as her dedication with the company's Career Pathways Program. Swan currently works with the program to develop soft skills and career readiness in students through job shadowing, mentoring, career

expos, after-school activities, and STEM activities. "Manufacturing is special because you get to see your hard work become a tangible product," said Swan. "You can say, 'I made this. I built this. I added value. It is a quite personal experience that can be shared by everyone involved in the process."

Update: Construction Impacts North Yard Parking; New Parking Spots Added to North Hidens An article regarding parking in the North Yard and additional parking spaces at North Hidens was published in Currents on April 3, 2017. The information below is an update to that communication. Beginning April 24, approximately 408 parking spaces in the North Yard will be affected due to road and infrastructure construction in support of the Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF). The construction will be implemented in phases to minimize the impact to parking. Of the 408 spaces affected, 329 of the affected spaces will be returned as soon as possible; 79 spaces will be permanently lost. In an effort to offset the loss of parking, the company has expanded the North Hidens parking lot, effective April 17, 2017. North Hidens is located off Warwick Blvd. and available to all NNS employees. The company provides a free Park-and-Ride shuttle service to and from the shipyard to this lot. Shuttle service will be expanded as necessary to the Park-and-Ride route to accommodate the increase in riders. The shuttle services operates from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. As a reminder, when the shuttle service is not operating, employees can use the company’s free taxi service, which is available from 7:15 a.m.to 3:10 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. to 1:10 a.m. Monday through Friday and can be scheduled by calling 846-7730. View the map above to see which areas of the North Yard will be affected. For questions regarding the construction in the North Yard Parking area, please contact Paul King (O41) at 380-4605.

Dear Shipbuilders, I was extremely proud to stand on the flight deck of our nation’s newest aircraft carrier, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), as we returned to Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday, April 14, following builder’s sea trials. This sea trial represents CVN 78’s first time at sea, under her own power. While underway, we tested the ship’s various systems and components, and we’re returning with an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment. We have worked millions of man hours to bring this ship to life, and this wouldn’t be possible without the hard work, dedication, and skill of you – the shipbuilders. From our construction trades, to engineers and designers to contracts – to every single division that makes up this great company, we know a project this complex and this challenging requires a huge team, a diverse team that is inclusive, and works together to get the job done. We have also worked side-by-side with our suppliers, NAVSEA, the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and of course, the incredible Gerald R. Ford crew. None of this would be possible without all of us working as one team. I congratulate each and every one of you on the pride and workmanship that helped bring this great aircraft carrier to life.
Thank you,
