Kennedy’s 21st Superlift Placed Into Dry Dock 12 Last week, a 965-ton superlift for John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) was placed into Dry Dock 12 . This is the 21st superlift that has been placed into the dock since the ship’s keel was laid in August 2015. Comprised of two pump rooms, the section was made with more than twice the amount of outfitting work compared to the same superlift on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). The 80 feet long, by 100 feet wide section is complete with grating, pumps, valves, pipe, electrical panels, equipment mounting studs, lighting and other outfitting components. On Ford, a large number of those components were installed after the superlift was placed in the Dry Dock. “We are continuing to make good progress on the Kennedy with a focus on reducing cost. Not only are we taking the lessons learned from the first ship of the class, the Ford, and applying them to our work on Kennedy, we are also approaching the construction of this ship differently to further bring down the cost,” said Mike Shawcross, vice president of CVN 79 Construction. “By installing most of the outfitting before the section goes into Dry Dock, we are able to significantly reduce manhours, which translates to cost savings for the Navy and the American taxpayer.” Kennedy is now 17 percent complete. The carrier is scheduled to be launched in February 2020 and delivered to the Navy in 2022.
Personal Camera-Enabled Devices to Be Allowed on NNS Property May 2 Last week, Derek Jenkins, director of Security and Emergency Management, sent a letter to all employees regarding the status of the company’s new security plan to allow employees and visitors to bring personal camera-enabled devices inside the shipyard. In the letter, Jenkins noted that nearly 100 percent of employees have completed the mandatory training needed for the policy change to be made effective. “In anticipation of everyone being trained and following the new policy, we expect that employees will be allowed to bring their personal camera-enabled devices on shipyard property starting May 2,” Jenkins wrote. “As soon as the policy changes, employees will be notified. Until we confirm the change, these devices are not allowed on company property.” CONTINUED ON PG 3
