Kennedy’s 21st Superlift Placed Into Dry Dock 12 Last week, a 965-ton superlift for John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) was placed into Dry Dock 12 . This is the 21st superlift that has been placed into the dock since the ship’s keel was laid in August 2015. Comprised of two pump rooms, the section was made with more than twice the amount of outfitting work compared to the same superlift on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). The 80 feet long, by 100 feet wide section is complete with grating, pumps, valves, pipe, electrical panels, equipment mounting studs, lighting and other outfitting components. On Ford, a large number of those components were installed after the superlift was placed in the Dry Dock. “We are continuing to make good progress on the Kennedy with a focus on reducing cost. Not only are we taking the lessons learned from the first ship of the class, the Ford, and applying them to our work on Kennedy, we are also approaching the construction of this ship differently to further bring down the cost,” said Mike Shawcross, vice president of CVN 79 Construction. “By installing most of the outfitting before the section goes into Dry Dock, we are able to significantly reduce manhours, which translates to cost savings for the Navy and the American taxpayer.” Kennedy is now 17 percent complete. The carrier is scheduled to be launched in February 2020 and delivered to the Navy in 2022.

Personal Camera-Enabled Devices to Be Allowed on NNS Property May 2 Last week, Derek Jenkins, director of Security and Emergency Management, sent a letter to all employees regarding the status of the company’s new security plan to allow employees and visitors to bring personal camera-enabled devices inside the shipyard. In the letter, Jenkins noted that nearly 100 percent of employees have completed the mandatory training needed for the policy change to be made effective. “In anticipation of everyone being trained and following the new policy, we expect that employees will be allowed to bring their personal camera-enabled devices on shipyard property starting May 2,” Jenkins wrote. “As soon as the policy changes, employees will be notified. Until we confirm the change, these devices are not allowed on company property.” CONTINUED ON PG 3

Apprentice Jaycees Volunteer at WHRO The Apprentice School Jaycees volunteered during a recent telethon at the public broadcasting station WHRO. The Jaycees answered calls from supporters who made donations toward the stations effort in maintaining broadcast variety and toward their community initiatives such as American Graduate, Veterans Coming Home, and SkillsOnline. “It was a bonding experience where we could have a fun time while making a positive impact,” said Apprentice Jaycees Community Development Vice President Sin Yi (X42). The event also challenged the Jaycees to focus on a skillset outside of their craftsmanship.” Apprentice School Association President Angel Counts (E06/E63) also volunteered. “It was cool seeing the station behind the scenes and I learned about the musician Muddy Water,” she said. “I look forward to volunteering at the next telethon.”

Machinery Installation Shipbuilders Reach Hydraulics Testing Milestone on Washington In February, members of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Machinery Installation Team (X43) completed hydraulics strength and tightness testing as well as cleanliness flushing on Washington (SSN 787). The testing was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. “This is the first time a team has completed hydraulic cleanliness flushing before the launch of the ship, and we couldn’t be more proud,” said Construction Supervisor Phillip Ashe (E25/X82). “A special thanks is owed to all employees who helped with the testing, especially the third shift hydraulic testing team for handling a large portion of the rigorous higher pressure testing.” Throughout the submarine’s construction, the team worked closely with NNS pipefitters (X42) and hull mechanical and electrical test engineers (E25). Ashe added, “Although there were challenges throughout the process, the team worked together and persevered to finish testing. It was definitely a team effort.” Washington was launched on March 25 and is on schedule to join the fleet in the fall of 2016.
