Preparing for Stennis Shipbuilders are finishing Dry Dock 11 preparations before the arrival of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). The aircraft carrier will arrive at Newport News Shipbuilding soon to begin its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH).

“All of our trades are gearing up to make sure we have all the people here that we need at the time that we need them,” said PJ Waller, a construction supervisor who has worked on carrier overhauls for about 40 years. “You think it’s just another carrier, but each carrier is unique. You have some of the same challenges, but you usually have a whole host of new challenges.”

components in the dry dock. The tool maps as he walks. “We’re doing these scans to show where everything is located in the dry dock and then we can use that scan for future overhauls setting up dry dock plans,” he said. The data takes less time to process with the handheld scanners than previously used scanners requiring tripods. “We’re able to scan this dock and get the keel block locations within four hours,” Woods said. “The older scanners would have taken about four or five days to get the same amount of data.”

Working in the dry dock is new for Kaylah Boggs (X42), who usually works aboard aircraft carriers during overhauls. “It’s very impressive,” she said. “It’s a lot more work than I expected it to be. There is always something new I learn every day, whether it’s on my jobsite or the actual job.”

Scaffolding lines the dry dock walls, a proactive approach to give shipbuilders faster access to the ship when it arrives. “We’ll go inside the ship and start tearing things down to start replacing things,” Waller said. “It’s challenging, but a lot of fun. I always feel good when I see the ship floating back out to sea when it leaves.”

New technology plays a role in dry dock preparations. Woody Woods (E63) uses a handheld laser scanning tool to map

Workers’ Memorial Day is April 28 Workers’ Memorial Day is observed every year on April 28 to remember and honor workers around the world who lost their lives, were injured or became ill on the job. It also is an opportunity for all employees to reflect and recommit to making good, safe decisions; looking out for others; and speaking up when they see something unsafe. As Newport News Shipbuilding practices social distancing and other measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, there will not be an in-person ceremony to commemorate Workers’ Memorial Day. “It sounds like a long time when you say 65, but it really doesn’t seem that long,” he said. To put things into perspective, only about 700 of NNS’ more than 25,000 current employees had even been born when Deese began his shipbuilding career in 1956, after a stint in college. “When I came to work here, I had run out of money for school. I was going to work for a while and save some money, but then came along buying a boat and buying a car,” he said. At NNS, Deese joined his mother, father and two brothers, who all were shipbuilders working various shifts. “Between the five of us, we covered the shipyard,” he said. “Somebody from the Deese family was in here 24 hours a day.” Early in his career at NNS, Deese worked in what was known as the Atomic Power Division, helping to design Enterprise (CVN 65), the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. “I saw it launched, went on the first trial trip that it made from the shipyard, and I went on the last trip when it came back to the shipyard from Norfolk,” said Deese, who now works in Commodity Engineering.

Master Shipbuilder Henry Deese Jr. began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1956.

Reflecting on the past 65 years at NNS, Deese said technology has transformed the way work is done at the shipyard. One of the biggest changes was seeing many of his coworkers begin working from home in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I never would’ve dreamed of that happening a few years ago,” he said.

Shipbuilder Celebrates 65 Years at NNS

Retirement may be on the horizon. But for now, Deese – who recently celebrated his 59th wedding anniversary – said he still enjoys his work at NNS.

Last weekend marked a big milestone for Master Shipbuilder Henry Deese Jr. (E68). Newport News Shipbuilding’s longestserving current employee, Deese celebrated his 65th work anniversary on April 24.

“I feel like I’ve picked up a lot of knowledge, made a lot of friends and been part of history in one way or another because I helped to design the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier,” he said. Watch a video featuring Deese and other longtime Master Shipbuilders on MyNNS.

Benefits Annual Enrollment Ends Friday Newport News Shipbuilding employees have until Friday, April 30, to enroll in or make changes to their benefits during the annual enrollment window. During annual enrollment, United Steelworkers, guards and salaried

employees who do not use tobacco must update their status to “tobacco-free” to save $660 on their Huntington Ingalls Industries medical insurance starting July 1. To take action, log in to UPoint through www.hiibenefits.com or by calling the Huntington Ingalls Benefits Center at 1-877-216-3222.

NOTICE: Security Policy Change Effective immediately, but enforceable after Aug. 24, Newport News Shipbuilding department heads must establish, operationalize and fully implement Security Executive Agent Directive (SEAD) 3 reporting requirements for personnel with eligibility for access to classified information. This Security Executive Agent Directive establishes reporting requirements for all individuals who have eligibility for access to classified information along the lines of potential foreign contact or influence. When fully and correctly implemented, this policy shift will help proactively identify and counter exposed risk to both eligible individuals and classified holdings/assets in a proactive manner. Shipbuilders can expect more definitive guidance in the near future. For questions, email NNSSecCompliancePrg@hii-nns.com.

Shipbuilders Judge Science Fair Newport News Shipbuilding employees Antionette Arnold, Janice Boone, Lewis Fisher, Sunny Harvat, Corban Van Ornum and Devon Stanley were judges in the 17th annual Norfolk Public Schools science fair.

Newport News Shipbuilding will undergo a surveillance audit of its Quality Management System (QMS) April 27-29. The American Bureau of Shipbuilding Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct these audits.

The science fair provided students in grades 3-7 the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of scientific concepts through innovative scientific research and investigation as well as show off their investigative skills and creativity. The Science Office of Norfolk Public Schools strives to prepare students to be productive contributors to society through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning opportunities.

Managers, general foremen and supervisors should emphasize to employees the importance of having knowledge of their work procedures and working to authorized procedures and drawings.

Due to COVID-19, projects were judged virtually. Each judge had to go through a training session and judge the students’ work based on a criteria from a rubric.

For more information, see the April 19 edition of Currents or contact Brent Ruffy (O04) at 688-1439.

HRT to Initiate Service Reliability Plan Beginning Sunday, May 9, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will start operating a scaleddown version of its normal bus service to enhance overall transit reliability as the impacts of COVID-19 are still being felt. The Service Reliability Plan will be in place until at least July 1, with bus frequencies ranging from 30 to 60 minutes on most routes. For more information, visit gohrt.com or call 757-222-6100.

Longleaf pine trees at The Mariners’ Museum and Park are named in honor of ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding. Photo by Lena Wallace

Longleaf Pine Trees Honor Shipbuilding Newport News Shipbuilding recently named two longleaf pine trees USS Delaware (SSN 791) and USS Indiana (SSN 789) at The Mariners’ Museum and Park. The trees are part of a longleaf pine grove, dedicated in 2018, that commemorates ships built at NNS. Southeastern Virginia was once home to 1.5 million acres of longleaf pine habitat. However, the trees – which were widely used in early shipbuilding – were pushed to near extinction in the region. The longleaf pine grove at The Mariners’ Museum and Park is part of an effort to repopulate the trees in the area. Other trees in the grove are named Dorothy, SS United States, USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and USS Washington (SSN 787). To see the longleaf pine grove for free, visit Harvey Field at The Mariners’ Museum and Park.
