Indiana (SSN 789) is Christened Newport News Shipbuilding held a christening ceremony for Indiana (SSN 789), the 16th Virginia-class submarine, Saturday, April 29. With a single swing, ship’s sponsor Diane Donald performed the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the submarine's hull. Donald is the wife of Adm. Kirkland Donald (U.S. Navy, Ret.), former director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion. “It’s the honor of a lifetime to be here today,” said Donald. “While the size of the submarine alone is stunning, the complexity inside sets it apart from any other machine ever built. These ships are second to none, made in America by truly remarkable Americans.” Vice President Mike Pence, former governor of Indiana, served as the ceremony’s keynote speaker. “He sent me here today on this historic occasion as a sign of his deep commitment to the Armed Forces of the United States of America, Photo by Ashley Major

and to his commitment to make the strongest fighting force in the world even stronger still,” Pence said of Trump. Speaking to the shipbuilders, he acknowledged their dedication and skill. “You have the gratitude of the commander in chief for your unwavering commitment to your country, your patriotism, your craftsmanship, and rest assured, President Trump will honor your commitment with historic investments in our national defense.” Other ceremony participants included Master Shipbuilder Samuel Brandon, who performed the national anthem; Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.); Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.); Sec. Sean Stackley, acting secretary of the Navy; Vice Adm. Joseph Tofalo, commander, Submarine Forces; Adm. Tom Fargo (U.S. Navy, Ret.), HII chairman of the board; Mike Petters, HII president and CEO; Matt Mulherin, NNS president; and Jeffrey Geiger, president, General Dynamics Electric Boat. Stackley spoke of the U.S. Navy’s important presence around... CONTINUED ON PG 3

NNS Donates Ambulance to Local Volunteer Rescue Squad When it comes to giving back to the community, Newport News Shipbuilding's Security and Emergency Management team is fully engaged. About every 10 years, the team donates a recently retired company ambulance to a local fire and rescue squad. This year, NNS' Chief of Fire and Emergency Services Mark McTheny, began the process of communicating to all local authorities that NNS had a 2006 wheeled coach ambulance with approximately 40K miles available. Shortly after the announcement was sent in February, the team received a request from Melissa Hatfield, president of the Courtland's Volunteer Rescue Squad in Southampton County. Hatfield's request stated that the county had recently lost one of their ambulances due to a traffic accident involving an uninsured motorist. "We're always happy to help out in our surrounding communities, and this is just one way we can help," said McTheny.

Within weeks, McTheny was able to obtain final approvals from company leadership to move forward with the donation. On April 20, the chief of Courtland's Volunteer Rescue Squad, Doug Bailey, and Hatfield met with McTheny and other NNS Emergency Management personnel to receive the official title and keys to the ambulance. "We are a small squad that services all of Southampton County, and when we lost one of our ambulances, we couldn't replace it due to financial constraints," said Hatfield. "The loss severely impacted our level of support and we are beyond grateful to NNS for their kind donation."

Shipbuilders Attend First Annual Workers' Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony More than 200 shipbuilders gathered at the Rock for Newport News Shipbuilding's first annual Workers' Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony on Friday, April 28. The ceremony was held to remember those who have suffered or died on the job, to acknowledge the suffering experienced by families and communities, and to renew efforts to ensure the safety of all workers. Several members of NNS' senior leadership team were present at the event including NNS President Matt Mulherin. "It's very appropriate that we're having this ceremony at the Rock," said Mulherin. "The Rock is an iconic symbol that has always been synonymous with quality. But when you really think about it, what it says is: 'We shall build good ships here – always good ships.' Good ships mean quality ships, but it also means ships that are built safely." Mulherin went on to applaud shipbuilders for 2016 being the safest year on record for the company, but noted that there was still 946 injuries. "For me, that is 946 too many," said Mulherin. "I believe our goal must be zero." Following ceremomy remarks, Mulherin along with Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, Maggie Yarborough (O53), and Vincent Sinclair (O43) laid four wreaths around the Rock representing the “life,” “hard work,” “dedication” and “sacrifice” of shipbuilders.

As wreaths were placed, Shipbuilder Brody Lambaiso (E46) played Amazing Grace on the keyboard. Attendees were then invited to place 142 white roses around the Rock in honor of the 142 NNS shipbuilders who have been lost on the job since the company began in 1886. The ceremony served as a kick-off to a new company-wide campaign focusing on staying vigilant and being aware of potential hazards in the workplace. In the coming weeks, employees will see safety awareness posters and banners hanging around the yard and at the gates as a reminder that safety is the company's top priority.

... the world. “More than a hundred U.S. Navy ships are underway, providing assurance to our alliesmaintaining persistent surveillance in regions of interest, conducting special operations undetected, safeguarding the choke points of the world, standing poised to assure access to strike if necessary, and providing humanitarian relief if needed. And all the while, [Navy ships are] serving as the enduring, reliable deterrent that underpins our nation’s security.” Speaking on behalf of the state of Indiana, Donnelly thanked the shipbuilders for their service to the U.S. Navy and the Indiana crew. “This crew is going to be at the very tip of the spear,” he said, “and you have given them the tools, the equipment, the ability to accomplish everything.” About 4,000 Newport News shipbuilders have participated in Indiana’s construction in partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat. Construction began in September 2012 and is about 90 percent complete. The submarine is on track to deliver to the Navy this year. “It’s hard to describe what it’s like to build one of the most complex machines in the world,” said Mulherin. “For our shipbuilders who do this every day – they can even lose perspective of the contributions they are making to our Navy and to our nation. For them, it’s all part of a day’s work—a long, hard, honest day’s work. However, as you look upon this magnificent vessel, I think you’ll agree, it’s no ordinary job. In fact, it’s pretty extraordinary. Our shipbuilders define what ‘Made in America’ means.”

Onsite Representatives Participate in NNS Workshop Newport News Shipbuilding's Submarine Hull Planning Yard (E18) hosted a local workshop for NNS Planning Yard Onsite Representatives (OSR’s), from around the nation, during the week of April 3. These representatives provide full time support for operational Los Angeles-class, Seawolfclass and Virginia-class submarines around the country and in Guam. The week-long workshop concentrated on functional areas and processes related to engineering, logistics support, and configuration management; as the OSR team provides a forward presence and communication conduit to submarine engineering, technical solutions, and naval activities regarding NNS Submarine Hull Planning Yard products and services. “Our onsite reps are key to our core business as a planning yard for the Navy and directly support the operational readiness of the submarine fleet.” said Mike Hoyt, Planning Yard manager. “Bringing them together for a workshop like this is important in framing our future requirements for submarine fleet support and our presence at each of these sites."

During the visit, the OSRs also toured various shipyard facilities and the integrated Digital Shipbuilding lab to view the latest facilities and technologies being employed by NNS. “This event provided an excellent opportunity for the OSRs to share their knowledge regarding current on-site efforts and provide input to enhance our fleet support processes” said Rob Szukelewicz, director of Submarine Engineering. “Likewise, we provided our vision to introduce certain technologies into their day-to-day work practices to bring further value to our customers; and I look forward to the future state as we continue to support the submarine fleet.”
