Employee Shares Weight Watchers Testimonial The company has teamed with Weight Watchers to offer healthy lifestyle guidance. Newport News Shipbuilding employee Thomas Carbaugh (E81) shares his experience with Weight Watchers (WW). “Over the past three years, I watched my weight increase over 200 pounds and my health decrease. I constantly had a sore back, sore knees and very little stamina for daily routines. I also developed severe sleep apnea and began using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine nightly. I looked into ways to decrease my weight including buying a home gym and dumb-bells, which were rarely used. I also looked into various weight loss plans including regimens to increase my metabolism and burn fat, and also plans that required me to buy $300 of their food each month. None of them appealed to me. In September of 2013 when a co-worker who hadn’t seen me in more than two years said,
‘Good to see you, how’re you doing, looks like you’ve put on some weight.’ I decided that something needed to be done. My doctor recomended WW because of its proven track record.
pounds. I’ve also gone from a 40 – 42 inch waist to a 36-inch waist. My back and knees have stopped hurting and I have more stamina and energy. My doctor has told me I can stop taking one of my blood pressure medications.
I looked into WW and was surprised to find out it was for men too. My first impression was, ‘Oh great! This is the one that counts points – just what I need.’ I then found out I could eat anything I wanted to including red meat and tremendous amounts of exercise were not required.
After six weeks of maintaining my target weight I became a lifetime member of WW. I continue going to meetings to learn more about maintaining my weight, and to encourage others. WW is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle change for a better and healthier you. Consider joining WW– what do you have to lose?”
After attending the open house, I wanted to join. One thing that helped me was the question about the points. The answer; ‘If you have 40 points a day consider it like you have $40 a day to spend on food and when that $40 is gone you have no more money to buy food.’ The encouragement and support from WW has been very helpful. After five months, I celebrated hitting my target weight of 173 pounds; losing 59.2
Weight Watchers will host at Open House event at NNS on Wednesday, May 6 from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in Bldg. 903-2 (room 214). Employees that register as a new member by May 8 will receive a FREE Weight Watchers starter kit including a cookbook, portion plates, and more. For more information contact Becky Johnson (O28) at 380-7380 or via email.
