NNS Honors 946 Master Shipbuilders Newport News Shipbuilding held the 28th Annual Master Shipbuilder Recognition Ceremony at the Hampton Roads Convention Center May 4. The annual ceremony honored the class of 1976 and all shipbuilders who have served the company for 40 or more continuous years. This year, a total of 946 men and women were recognized. NNS President Matt Mulherin gave opening remarks. "It's my honor to be here tonight to personally congratulate our newest class of Master Shipbuilders... And to thank all of you for your many years

of dedication and service," he said. "... This dinner is one of my favorite events, and while I'm happy to be here, it's also bittersweet, as it will be my last one." Jennifer Boykin, NNS president-elect, served as the keynote speaker. During her remarks, Boykin asked all Master Shipbuilders to stand to be recognized, then took a picture of them from stage and a selfie. "Your knowledge, wisdom and experience is something our shipbuilders rely on. It’s something I’ll rely on too,” Boykin said. ... CONTINUED ON PG 2

Mulherin was named NNS’ president in 2011 and prior to this position, he served as sector vice president and general manager of site operations for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding – Newport News. Mulherin began his career at NNS in 1981 as a nuclear test engineer. Since then, he held increasingly responsible positions, including nuclear project manager for Los Angeles-class submarines, director of Facilities, director of Nuclear Engineering and Refueling, and director of Carrier Refueling and Overhaul Construction. He also served as director and vice president for the next generation of aircraft carriers, the Gerald R. Ford class, and as vice president of all programs, including shipbuilding and repair, Department of Energy, and commercial energy. Mulherin graduated from Virginia Tech in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. “Matt has touched every product built by Newport News Shipbuilding during his very successful tenure,” said HII President and CEO Mike Petters. “He has been a part of seven aircraft carrier deliveries and will ... ... “Collectively, your service spans 40,809 years of shipbuilding... You are the foundation that inspires us, guides us and makes us proud to continue your great legacy." Boykin welcomed Shipbuilder Aurelia Booth on stage to deliver the invocation. Following dinner, Boykin and Susan Jacobs, vice president of Human Resources and Administration, participated in the annual "Jacket Presentation," a presentation showcasing the jacket that all new Master Shipbuilder inductees receive when they are inducted into the prestigious club. Nuclear Quality Inspector Robert Brown Jr. participated in the presentation representing new inductees. Following the presentation, Mulherin joined Boykin and Jacobs on stage for a gift basket drawing. Prior to this year's ceremony, Master Shipbuilders were given the opportunity to enter into a raffle to win one of 10 gift baskets. X42 Foreman Tommie White Jr. was the recipient of the grand prize gift basket featuring dinner and a one night stay at

a Virginia Beach oceanfront hotel. “It was great to have an opportunity to win a gift at the event. I’ve never won anything before in my life – I guess you have to wait until you get old to win something,” White joked. Rosa “Pinky” Perry was one of the new Master Shipbuilder inductees this year. "I really enjoyed myself at this special event, and it was very memorable,” she said. “The years have gone by so fast and it was great seeing a few people I’ve worked with over the years. My son was able to attend the event with me and he told me that he is very proud of me for having a long successful career as a shipbuilder.” Watch a highlights video of the ceremony or watch the 1976 Master Shipbuilder video that was shown during the ceremony. In addition, posters are available outside of the Communications Office in Bldg. 520-1. Turn to p. 5 to view a list of new Master Shipbuilder inductees.

... soon add one more, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), to the list. Matt’s leadership in the design, construction and testing of this first-in-class carrier, with myriad new technologies, has been critical to the success of this program. While the delivery of ships has been a large part of his responsibility and legacy, I believe Matt will be most remembered for his open and engaging style of leadership. It’s obvious that he cares deeply for the shipbuilders at Newport News. HII would not be the successful company it is today if it were not for Matt’s leadership during the spin-off six years ago and since that time.”

Turn to p. 7 or visit MyNNS to read Mulherin's farewell letter to shipbuilders. After Mulherin retires as NNS president, he will assist with the transition and continue to report to Petters until his retirement. Boykin, who will report to Petters effective July 1, currently serves as vice president, Engineering and Design for NNS. Named to this position in 2012, she is responsible for all ship design, planning yard and topside construction and test engineering. “Jennifer is an experienced and

well-respected leader in our industry,” Petters said. “Her style is collaborative, and she is adept at building strong teams that work well together to deliver exceptional results. Her deep understanding of all levels of our business will help create great value for our customers. Jennifer has demonstrated the leadership skills and strategic vision to lead the Newport News Shipbuilding team to success, and I look forward to her joining my team, and I know Newport News Shipbuilding will be in capable hands.” Boykin’s shipbuilding career began in 1987 when she

joined NNS in the Nuclear Engineering Division. She has held progressively responsible positions, including director, facilities and waterfront support; program manager, nuclear engineering division; construction superintendent for the aircraft carrier program during construction of the USS John C. Stennis and USS Harry S. Truman; sector vice president, Process Excellence; and vice president, Mission and Quality Assurance. Boykin's full biography is available on NNS' website.

U.S. Navy License Plate; NNS License Plate Reminder The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) could soon be offering a specialty plate with the official U.S. Navy logo, thanks to retired Navy Captain Roger Hirsh of Chesapeake. Not too long ago, Hirsh who discovered that the Virginia DMV did not offer a specialty license plate for the U.S. Navy, started a personal campaign that, if successful, could add the Navy to Virginia's list of specialty plates as soon as July 2018. Currently, the Navy's Trademark Licensing Office has granted Virginia permission to use the Navy's emblem and Delegate Chris

Jones, R-Suffolk, has signed on to sponsor legislation in the next General Assembly session seeking its approval. The specialty plate needs at least 450 prepaid applications submitted, as required for the DMV's specialty plate authorization. For additional information, search the keywords, "Navy Plate Virginia" on Facebook. As a reminder, a specialty Newport News Shipbuilding license plate is currently available at Virginia DMVs and can also be ordered online.

May 4, 2017 Dear Shipbuilders, After 36 years of service, I will be retiring on July 31. While leaving is bittersweet, the timing feels right. In 1999, I began working on the design for our nation’s next generation aircraft carrier, CVNX. This program evolved into what we know today as the Gerald R. Ford Program. Having just been underway on Ford sea trials and seeing the ship transform from concept to design to reality has been one of the proudest accomplishments in my career, and I can think of no better time than now to retire. From my early days as a test engineer on third shift until today, I can honestly say I lived my dream at Newport News Shipbuilding. Like so many of you, the shipyard has provided me with challenging work, it’s allowed me to raise a family, and it’s made me feel like I’m part of something larger than myself. While the work has always been fulfilling, it’s the people who have really made all the difference. When I came to the shipyard as a “straight-C” student from Virginia Tech, I never imagined I’d become president of this great company. It’s been my honor to serve in this role and to lead the finest of shipbuilders – bar none! I know that the past two years have been challenging with cost reductions and layoffs. Thank you for your patience and perseverance during this time. Thank you for staying focused on safety, quality, cost and schedule. And thank you for remaining committed to our founder’s legacy of “always good ships.” We are almost through the workload valley. Our division’s future will remain steady, and I am very confident in our next president, Jennifer Boykin. During the month of June, Jennifer and I will be holding town hall meetings across the shipyard to discuss in more detail the future of NNS. I look forward to seeing you and to thanking you in person for making this journey something I shall never forget. All my best,

Matt Mulherin President
