A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding

CVN 72 is Redelivered to U.S. Navy USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) was redelivered back to the U.S. Navy on Friday, May 12. The redelivery took place following successful sea trials that tested the ship’s systems following its refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). Lincoln returned to her homeport at Naval Station Norfolk.

Sea trials test the carrier’s systems and operations at sea, including high-speed operations. The trials team, comprising sailors, shipbuilders and government representatives, puts the ship through a series of tests designed to prove system performance and demonstrate all the carrier’s capabilities at sea.

“The successful completion of sea trials and redelivery of the ship to the Navy is the culmination of over 48 months of teamwork between Newport News shipbuilders, the CVN 72 crew, our government partners and all of our suppliers,” said Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. “The completion of the refueling and complex overhaul returns a fully recapitalized ship to the fleet ready to support any mission and serve our nation for another 25 years.”

“Every sailor, shipyard worker and contractor involved with RCOH and redelivery should be standing tall as we bring this mighty warship back home to Norfolk and put her back into service for the U.S. Navy,” said Capt. Ronald Ravelo, Lincoln’s commanding officer. “Getting Lincoln back into the fight was truly an all-hands effort, and I could not be more proud of the crew who helped make that happen.”

CVN 72 Redelivery CONTINUED FROM PG 1

The RCOH process is performed only once during the ship’s 50-year lifetime and involves upgrades to nearly every space and system on the ship. Tanks, the hull, shafting, propellers, rudders, piping, ventilation, electrical, combat and aviation support systems were repaired, upgraded and modernized. Work also included defueling and refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors and repairs and upgrades to the propulsion plant. Newport News is the only shipyard with the skilled workforce and facilities equipped for this four-year project, which was described in a 2002 Rand Study as one of the most challenging and highly industrial tasks undertaken by any organization. The fifth Nimitz-class carrier to undergo an RCOH, Lincoln has had as many as 4,000 shipbuilders assigned to her at peak manning periods. The next carrier in line for its RCOH is the USS George Washington (CVN 73).

Preparations are underway at Naval Station Norfolk, and the ship is scheduled to arrive at Newport News this summer. Watch a video of CVN 72 returning to Norfolk following sea trials or watch a video message from Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers, congratulating shipbuilders on a successful RCOH and sea trials. A photo slide show from sea trials is also available on MyNNS and the NNS to Go app.

Apprentice School Holds 10th Annual SNAME Boat Races The Apprentice School hosted the 10th Annual SNAME (Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers) Boat Design Competition at The Mariners’ Museum May 6. Despite heavy winds, a lot of spectators showed up to watch the annual event. In this year's competition, students designed landing craft for an invasion at the Lion’s Bridge, which required a balance between payload, speed, and maneuverability. Team "Barracuda," from the Advanced Technology Center, won the competition with 46 jeeps and 192 soldiers. Other finalists included: "Nauti Buoys" (West Springfield High School), "Operation Overboard" (Jamestown High School), and "Pay-Day" (Poquoson High School). In addition, there was a new set of races this year – the "10th Anniversary Championship." The winning teams from the 2015 competition ("Your Worst Anemone" from Jamestown High School) and the 2016 competition ("Monstro" from Poquoson High School) competed in a high-speed race and slalom race. The race was an extremely close competition and "Monstro" was crowned the winner. Special thanks to all competitors, spectators and volunteers who made this year's event possible.

Android Users: Potential Performance Issues Following Nougat System Upgrade Recently, Google’s Android 7 Nougat system update became available for download and installation. The upgrade delivers new features and enhancements, however, some users may experience problems with certain apps including the Google Play Store and/or the NNS to Go app. Users who have upgraded to Nougat and are experiencing performance issues with specific apps, should delete and reinstall those apps on their mobile device. If the Google Play Store consistently crashes, users should restart their device. If restarting the device does not work, then users may need to clear their storage cache. This can easily be done by tapping on “Settings,” then tapping, “Storage,” then “Cached Data.” Connection speeds vary based on cellular service and/or wifi connection

As he was driving to work in February, Noel Lewis (X11) witnessed an accident on the James River Bridge. While waiting for emergency responders to arrive, Lewis assisted the accident victim, who turned out to be a fellow shipbuilder. When responders arrived, Lewis stayed on scene to provide details of what occurred. To recognize Lewis' acts of heroism, Ray Bagley, vice president of Trade Operations, presented Lewis with a Level 1 Ethics Award on April 6. “Dr. King once told a story about a question a priest and a Levite asked which was, 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But a good Samaritan reversed the question and asked, 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?' Noel Lewis is the living example of the good Samaritan and I am honored to recognize him," said Bagley. To nominate a fellow employee for an On-the-Spot Ethics Award, visit the EEO, Ethics and Compliance website on MyNNS or contact Catrina Hagwood (O18) at 688-1907.
