Shipbuilders Complete Crane Milestone Newport News Shipbuilding’s new 315-metric-ton Goliath gantry crane is a step closer to becoming operational, thanks to shipbuilders from the X36 Rigging Shop. Crews recently installed the crane’s wire rope on its four hoist blocks – three main blocks and an auxiliary hoist. Each main hoist holds just under 1 mile of wire rope. Two crews – one on the ground and another 275 feet in the air – worked in unison to accomplish the milestone.
“You have to be focused and committed to the process whenever you work a job like this. Many things can go wrong on a job of this size, so you cannot allow yourself to be distracted,” said X36 Apprentice Craft Instructor Jarrod Burke, who led the machinery space crew. “With a little luck and the grace of God, we were able to make it happen,” he said. X36 Foreman Raymond Faulk led the ground crew. The teams maintained constant communication during the CONTINUED ON PG 2
NNS Kicks Off Advance Construction for Columbia-Class Submarines Newport News Shipbuilding hosted a ceremonial first-cut-of-steel event Thursday, May 23, to mark the start of advance construction for the Columbia Class Submarine Program. With the press of a button, a plasma-burning machine cut the first steel plate that will be used to build Columbia (SSBN 826), the lead ballistic missile submarine. As NNS continues its digital transformation, the event also marked the first class of submarines that will be built using fully digital blueprints. installation of the wire rope. With limited experience in each crew, shipbuilders worked together step by step until each hoist was complete. “We had to pay attention to detail. When you’re running wire rope, you’ve got to expect the unexpected,” said Tilden Purdie (X36).

NNS Kicks Off Advance Construction for ColumbiaClass Submarines CONTINUED FROM PG 1
“Today is a historic day,” said Jason Ward, vice president of Columbia Class Submarine Construction. “It has been a half century since Newport News Shipbuilding has constructed a ballistic submarine. Today, we celebrate the decade-plus effort spent working with Electric Boat on the design of this new class of submarine as we formally transition from design to material procurement and now to construction execution.” NNS is a major contractor and shipbuilding partner in the Columbia-class program and is performing advance construction activities under a contract the shipyard received from General Dynamics Electric Boat. The Columbia-class boats will replace the fleet of Ohioclass nuclear ballistic submarines. NNS is starting its work three weeks ahead of schedule to support its advance construction efforts. “The first cut of steel is a major construction milestone that signifies our shipyard and submarine industrial base are ready to move forward with production,” Ward said. “We have worked to engage the submarine industrial base and leveraged lessons learned from the successful Virginia-class program to building the Columbia-class submarines in the most efficient and affordable manner to provide the best value to the Navy.” Construction of the 12-boat Columbia class will take place in Virginia, Rhode Island and Connecticut, with Electric Boat assembling and delivering all of the submarines. The lead boat is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in 2027. Watch a highlights video of the ceremony on MyNNS, the NNS to Go app or company social media channels.

That attention to detail also allowed both teams to complete their work with no injuries. “Safety is the No. 1 goal. The keys are to follow procedures, communicate and not rush the job,” said Curtis “Sarge” Butler (X36). ASIAN ERG Hosts Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration The Asian Shipbuilders Including All Nationalities (ASIAN) employee resource group hosted an Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration for Newport News Shipbuilding employees May 20. John “Jay” Donnelly, vice president of Advanced Technologies for Huntington Ingalls Industries, was the keynote speaker and provided insights about his time as a Navy admiral in Asia. “I’ve had several tours in the western Pacific so I’ve had a great opportunity to visit many of the countries,” he said. “The prosperity and stability of this region matter to the United States.” Donnelly also discussed some of the ongoing tensions in the area and pointed out that several Huntington Ingallsbuilt ships are forward deployed in the region to protect U.S. and ally interests. Attendees enjoyed a reception and displays representing different Asian cultures. Summer intern Anthony Dai (E81) attended the event and said becoming involved with ERGs like ASIAN can help interns better understand the company and their own personal career goals. “For interns, it’s a brilliant opportunity to be exposed to a more diverse perspective of the company.”

Dede Dolkar (E33/on loan to K49) said it’s important for employees to see representation and that the ERG provides an opportunity to connect with shipbuilders from across the company and learn about their contributions to NNS. “I believe that it’s important to raise awareness of your culture/heritage and at the same time educate those around you,” said Dolkar, who serves on the ERG’s board. ASIAN ERG board members and NNS leaders also recently met with the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers’ executive director and development manager to discuss the company’s burgeoning partnership. “What began solely as a recruiting event will now offer leadership development and recognition opportunities for Asian professionals with a focus on building a network of future company leaders,” said Brent Ruffy (O04), a member of the ASIAN ERG board.
NNS Employees Walk for Suicide Prevention and Awareness Despite light rain, more than 100 community members recently participated in the second annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk for suicide prevention and awareness at Skidmore College.

5 | 28 | 2019 After two years, Webb felt like she had mastered her skills and was looking for other opportunities the shipyard had to offer. After hearing the positive comments from her coworkers about the PEER program, she knew she had to get involved. “It was crazy to hear how much they learned in such a short amount of time. I thought, wow, I really need to do this,” she said. At the same time, Webb was mentored by Brandi Smith, director of Quality Control (O30). Throughout her rotation in the program, Webb was able to meet with her mentor regularly, leaning on her for advice and direction. “Brandi has opened doors for me and presented opportunities to me that I would have never taken before,” she said. As a mentor, Smith sees the program as a way to give back. “I really try to keep that perspective through mentoring. It’s fulfilling because you can pass on lessons learned and watch fellow shipbuilders develop and grow. Some of them have moved on into first levels of leadership, and that to me shows success in the program,” Smith said.

Mentoring Program Opens Doors When Marissa Webb (X51) started at Newport News Shipbuilding seven years ago, she never imagined she would still be here, let alone in management. Looking back, she’s glad she stayed. The Professional Enrichment and Enhancement Rotation (PEER) and the NNS Mentoring programs have helped Webb continue her growth at the shipyard.
Webb was recently promoted to a new role and said she is thankful to have someone to ask questions. “Ultimately, I know we are all in this together. We are a team. The best way to help each other learn and grow is by sharing what you know,” she said. For more information, visit the websites for the PEER and Mentoring programs on MyNNS.
Training the Gerald R. Ford Crew in C-ARTS Just 900 feet away from USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) at the south end of Newport News Shipbuilding, is the Navy’s CarrierAdvanced Reconfigurable Training System (C-ARTS). The self-contained, portable mobile training system provides aircraft carrier crew training within the yard. C-ARTS was funded by NAVSEA and designed and developed through a partnership with Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Technical Solutions division and NNS, along with Cape Henry Associates, CACI and KOVA Global. There are two C-ARTS unit configurations: classroom and laboratory. The classroom unit can be reconfigured into separate smaller classrooms, a larger area with auditorium seating, or as table seating for conferences or meetings. The laboratory unit provides support for hands-on operations and maintenance training. HII is responsible for the development and delivery of over 150 training courses taught inside C-ARTS, including advanced weapons elevator courses. Instructor-led Interactive Media Instruction (IMI) course content has also been developed and includes: familiarization, operation and maintenance training. Students can use the 24-inch touchscreen displays within the trailer to practice and fully understand how to operate the complex systems.
The Navy’s Carrier-Advanced Reconfigurable Training System (C-ARTS) sits just feet away from USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
Later this year, Networks, Communications and Automation (E44) will utilize a newly developed MCMS Onboard Trainer to provide crew watch-station training using realistic system simulations. The partnership has also enhanced course delivery through the use of virtual reality, videos and 3D printing. Once Ford completes its post shakedown availability, both C-ARTS units will be relocated to Naval Station Norfolk. Future units are under construction and will be used at NNS for John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) training. Contact Steve Christie (E92) at 534-4022 or via email for additional details about the C-ARTS training courses.

Reminder: Consistency in Allocating Costs harging similar costs as indirect on one contract but direct on another contract is a C Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) noncompliance. A CAS noncompliance could result in downward contract price adjustments, cash withholds and other detrimental financial impacts to the company. For this reason, it is important to be consistent in charging labor and material costs. Government Finance Relations (O74) can provide assistance in determining the correct way to charge.
