performed and look forward to continuing our testing program before we deliver the boat to the U.S. Navy later this year.”

The initial round of sea trials, known as alpha trials, provides an opportunity to test all systems and components. It includes submerging for the first time and high-speed maneuvers while on the surface and submerged.

Construction of Indiana began in 2012. The boat – the 16th Virginiaclass submarine built as part of the teaming partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat – was christened in April 2017.

“Sea trials is a significant milestone and the first major test of submarines' capabilities at sea,” said Dave Bolcar, vice president of Submarine Construction. “We are pleased with how Indiana

5 | 29 | 2018 challenge in engineering, design or on the waterfront, shipbuilders are constantly creating new solutions to make their work safer, faster and smarter. Many of NNS’ most successful innovations began as challenges that were solved with simplicity. Shipbuilders encountered a challenge during the removal of gas service valves on “A-frame” gas manifolds in the North Gas Yard No. 6. Due to the manifold design, refurbishing or replacing valves required an awkward hand grip that resulted in hand and finger injuries.

A shipbuilder uses a new T-handle device.

Innovation on the Deckplate Each day, on every deckplate and in every shop, innovation happens across Newport News Shipbuilding. Whether solving a

In addition, removing the gas service manifold valves required strenuous manipulation, traditionally performed using a hand-tool with cramped access and poor ergonomics. With an increase in repetitive motion injuries occurring as shipbuilders pull and replace the gas service valves, O46 Foreman Michele Affolter and the O46 Ergo Task Team decided something needed to be

done. Affolter challenged one craftsman to improve the situation. In just a few days, Piperfitter Rufus “Buck” Sipple (O46) developed a prototype "T-handle" device that allows easier handwheel rotation using a wrench affixed to a slip-on hand-wheel-cover. Shipbuilders welcomed the new tool. “It has greatly reduced strain on the upper body,” said Pipefitter Aaron Johnson (O46). “The gas service valve tool reduces the risk for hand injury and also makes the process of refurbishing ‘A-frames’ more efficient,” said Pipefitter Reggie Moore (O46). This simple, yet effective solution went through months of modifications and testing for strength and replication and is now available and in use within Plant Operations (O46). The department is currently working to make the gas farm T-handles available for check out in the tool room.

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month: Paula Young May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. The theme for this year’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) monthly recognition campaign is "Unite Our Voices by Speaking Together." As part of the campaign, four employees will be featured during each recognition month – two from within the featured demographic and two outside of it. Employees will share personal stories, insight and perspectives on what the month means to them. Features will be published in Currents, the NNS to Go app, MyNNS and HII social media channels. As the nation celebrates Asian-Pacific Heritage Month in May, Paula Young (O68) reflects on her experience as a member of the Asian Shipbuilders Including All Nationalities (ASIAN) employee resource group (ERG) at Newport News Shipbuilding. “As a member of the ASIAN employee resource group, I have learned a great deal about the customs and traditions of Asian cultures. I’ve also made many new friends who have given me even more insight. Inclusion and diversity are so important because they take away prejudices and allow us to get to know – and learn from

– one another. You ultimately realize how different, but similar we all are, no matter our background,” she said. In her three decades at NNS, Young has witnessed a lot of positive change – especially in terms of inclusion and diversity. One change in particular that stands out is the development of various ERGs, which help connect and engage employees from across the company. In fact, Young – a planner in Dimensional Control at NNS – is such a believer in the company’s ERGs that she joined them all. Participating in events with ASIAN provides opportunities to learn, network with fellow shipbuilders and NNS leaders and perform community service work. “I’ve had so many opportunities here in the shipyard, and that’s why I do all of the things that I do. ERGs like ASIAN give you a broader view of the shipyard and your coworkers, while also allowing you to give back,” Young said. She encourages all shipbuilders to explore ERGs and take the time to learn about different cultures. “We should all be

willing to open our minds and learn new things.” Young said. “It is a truly rewarding experience.” View Young's poster on MyNNS. Employees interested in participating in this year’s I&D campaign should visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/id-campaign-2018.

CURRENTS 3 which operates the huge furnaces that heat the metal alloy to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and subsequently pours it into the mold. The complex manufacturing process involves engineers, patternmakers, mold builders, melters, grinders, welders and inspectors. "We made a modification to the pattern based on input from the engineers to reduce time spent grinding," said Patternmaker Chris Perry (M71). The melt crew also made operational improvements. "Our processes are more repeatable and consistent," said Melt Crew Foreman Donald Thacker.

Foundry Sets New Record Shipbuilders in Newport News Shipbuilding's Foundry recently shattered a record when they shipped a huge casting for John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) after only 97 days of manufacturing. That's a substantial improvement from the previous standard of 400 days to manufacture the 22-ton elevator guide rail casting. The time and cost savings are the result of process modifications and attention to detail by shipbuilders at every phase of development. "I am proud of the entire team's focus on providing a quality product," said Foundry General Foreman Kevin Forrest. "It's all about preparation," said Marvin Major (A572), a member of the mold crew. "I make sure all my material is in line, because there are strict time limits on using the sand. Once we start, we can't stop." Elevator guide rails play an important role in moving aircraft to and from the flight deck. They are among the largest items cast in the Foundry and are key to keeping ship construction on schedule. "Teamwork brings success," said Kenny Sykes (A572), a member of the melt crew,

Addressing dimensional corrections during heat treatment eliminated the need for separate straightening operations and netted additional time and cost savings. Because of improvements in the molding, melting and heating stages, less grinding and welding was required compared with previous guide rails. "The oven operators, inspectors, X36 riggers and the engineering team worked together to carefully position and support the guide rail during heat treatment resulting in the casting passing the tough flatness requirement the first time through the process. It was an outstanding achievement for the team," said Foundry Engineering Manager Jason Binns. The Foundry continues to implement improvements to reduce time and cost. "We are committed to further improvements," Forrest said. "The entire team is dedicated to providing a quality product on time to the CVN 79 team. We want to set them up for success."

Parking and Transportation Updates Huntington Bridge Project to Begin June 4 The city of Newport News will begin a project to replace the Huntington Avenue bridge June 4, with completion of the project anticipated in June 2019. Though the start date for the project is next Monday, the bridge will likely not close until mid-June as preparation work (such as installing detours, signage, traffic signals, etc.) needs to be completed before construction can begin. Employees should pay close attention to signage, detours and markings. As additional information becomes available, it will be communicated to employees. For additional information, view the Distribution A memo or watch a video on MyNNS. Motorcycle Parking Beside Dorothy Expanded Due to an increased number of employees utilizing the motorcycle parking lot located beside Dorothy, the company has increased the number of parking spaces from 32 to 50. Facilities completed the repainting work last week, and the lot is currently available for motorcyclists.

NNS Helps Thomas Nelson Community College Celebrate 50th Anniversary Among Newport News Shipbuilding’s employees are more than 1,000 Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) alumni. The college – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary – and NNS have shared a close relationship for decades. “For years, we have drawn from each other’s resources and strengths to accomplish more than any of us can do on our own,” said Ray Bagley, vice president for Trades Operations and a TNCC alumnus. “Together, we have identified educational challenges facing our community and worked to address them. We have developed programs that enhance the skills of our existing

Southall encouraged fellow alumni to continue to support TNCC and its students. “For the next 50 years, let’s all wrap our heads around how we – the shipbuilders who came from Thomas Nelson – can give back and help the shipbuilders who will come from Thomas Nelson,” he said. Angel Harris-Holley (M32) said she has completed three leadership programs through TNCC and is working toward a business degree. “I’ve been going since I got hired here, and I’m not stopping,” she said after the alumni reception. “I try to encourage everyone else as well. When you continue to learn, you continue to do better in life.” Harris-Holley said she started college several years ago and wasn’t able to finish. But now that she’s put her four daughters through college, it’s her turn. “It is great to have the educational opportunities that the shipyard offers through Thomas Nelson,” she said.

Shipbuilders Present NNS FAME Project Tom Bales (O41), Aaron Zurfluh (O41) and Steve Kortz of Huntington Ingalls Industries' division of the Facilities Asset Mobile Environment (FAME) Team, recently presented the NNS FAME project at two conferences. Bales presented “From Old-School to World-Class: Newport News Shipbuilding’s Asset Management Optimization” at the 2018 Waste Management Symposia in Phoenix, Arizona. The conference focuses on best practices in the nuclear waste management industry. Kortz and Zurfluh presented “Out of the Desk Drawer and Onto a Tablet: Our Story of Asset Master Data Renewal” at the 2018 SAP Centric EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) Conference in Austin, Texas. “This conference focuses on SAP users, with emphasis on the Plant Maintenance and Materials Management modules of SAP. It’s a lot of thought sharing by the actual users,” Kortz said. In addition, Bales participated as one of three experts on the closing panel who fielded questions from the audience about their asset management issues. The presentations shared that the company combines mobile hardware, information about equipment and improved processes in order to better maintain production assets. Both presentations generated follow-up questions and discussions from attendees who represented organizations such as Marathon Oil, Hallmark Cards, Dominion

Building a Culture of Engagement Last year, a Culture and Engagement Team was established in the Human Resources and Administration Division at Newport News Shipbuilding in support of the NNSFORWARD Strategy. Check MyNNS and the NNS to Go app for information about engagement and to learn about engaged leaders at NNS.

Everyone has their story as to how they have been affected by cancer. My story begins with my Grandma Millie, who had been diagnosed with multiple types of cancer. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, it made me aware of the things I needed to do for myself – monthly self-breast exams, early mammograms, eating healthier, exercise, etc. I knew I wasn’t able to entirely prevent it, but with education and early detection, I could be a step ahead if it did happen. I found a lot of valuable information through the American Cancer Society. My grandmother passed away in 2000 after a valiant battle. I attended my first Relay that next year, and I’ve been attending and participating ever since. In January 2013, I went for my annual well woman’s physical and everything checked out fine. Two days later, I went for my mammogram, and that didn’t turn out quite so well. I ended up being diagnosed with Stage IIB breast cancer. That was alright. I pulled up my big girl panties, developed my plan and started kicking butt. I had a 14-year-old daughter at home, and I was going to be there for her. I dyed my hair pink, shaved it into a Mohawk and practically dared everyone to ask me why. I wanted people to become educated. I wanted them to learn their bodies so that they would know when something was wrong and be able to become their own self advocates. Relay For Life 2013 was tough. I had a chemo treatment that morning and was exhausted, but I wasn’t going to miss it. People were Relaying for me and I was going to Relay for them. Walking my first Survivor Lap was very emotional. Having all of these people I didn’t know clapping and cheering me on and people I did know, stepping out on to the track to hug me as I made my way around, made me remember why I was there. I was there to fight, to keep Relaying for a cure, to keep Relaying for hope. I Relay for me. I Relay for my daughter, Katelynn. I Relay for you. Join me in Relaying for everyone. Come experience Relay for yourself. Jenn Cherry (O22)
