Washington Successfully Delivered to Navy On May 26, Newport News Shipbuilding successfully delivered Washington (SSN 787) to the U.S. Navy after successfully completing its final round of sea trials. The boat earned the highest Figure of Merit score to date of any new construction Virginia-class submarine. Figure of Merit is the scoring method used by the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV), a Navy organization whose purpose is to inspect and assess material condition of Navy vessels. “We are very proud of the ship and its great crew,” said Matt Needy, vice president of Virginia-Class Submarine Program and Fleet Services. “The score is a reflection of our commitment to quality and follows in the Newport News tradition of ‘always good ships.’ We absolutely recognize our Navy’s increasing need for mission-ready submarines, and we are committed to doing everything we can to support that demand.” Washington’s construction, which began in September 2011 under a teaming arrangement between Newport News and General Dynamics... Material Logistics Team Develops Training Program Nine craftsmen and craftswomen in the Material Logistics Department recently developed and deployed an on-the-job training program for forklift operators. The new program offers forklift operators additional training to the company’s required three hour forklift operator course. The team developed a step-by-step training handbook that includes: a qualification preparation quiz, a trainer/trainee tracking system, a trainee feedback card, a management guide on how to utilize the program, an employee acknowledgment form, and a certificate of completion. Trainers of this new program can work directly with trainees in their work centers to build operator confidence and ensure that the main focus is on safety. Thus far, this program has significantly reduced forklift accidents and is improving the length of time it takes for forklift operators to get certified. “I couldn’t be more proud of this team who committed their time to developing and ensuring that this new training program was a

success,” said Logistics Director Terry Voltz. “They built the program around the importance of keeping our forklift operators safe and efficient with their time. We are now approaching the programs one year anniversary and the teams trainees have had zero accidents, and the program has expanded to provide training for re-qualification's and retraining as needed.” After graduation from the program, forklift operators are recognized during their shift huddle by their supervisor or their trainer, who presents them with a framed certificate of completion. To learn more about the Logistics forklift training program, contact Valerie Smith (O53) at 380-4928.

Stop by NNS' Booth at Patriotic Festival This Weekend The Virginia Beach Patriotic Festival is this weekend, June 2-4. Enjoy concerts and a military expo right on the beach. Newport News Shipbuilding's booth will be located on the boardwalk between 15th and 16th street. Stop by and spin the wheel for great prizes such as beach towels, christening memorabilia and more. Be sure to mention to booth volunteers that you are an NNS employee for a chance to win concert tickets to one of the festival shows.

ISO 9001 Audit Planned: May 30 - June 2 Newport News Shipbuilding will undergo a certification audit of its Quality Management System (QMS) May 30 through June 2. The international standard ISO 9001, Quality Management Systems - Requirements, was revised in 2015, and NNS is certifying to the new revision. The American Bureau of Shipbuilding Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct this audit. Quality Management System Audit: The audit team will review work documents associated with many of the areas of the shipyard, including records for equipment

calibration, training, production control, product testing, internal audits, and corrective and preventive actions. Auditors may also request to randomly interview employees in both nuclear and non-nuclear work areas about work procedures to evaluate their work practices, overall awareness of Newport News' quality management policies and the knowledge of the impact their work has. Employees should answer questions about how they normally accomplish their work. During the last audit, several people and departments were asked about their work

processes. Managers, general foremen and supervisors should emphasize to employees the importance of having knowledge of their work procedures and working to authorized procedures and drawings. A successful audit will certify the shipyard's ISO 9001 certificate for the Quality Management System for another three years. NNS was first certified to ISO 9001 in 1993 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For more information, contact Tony Burger (O06) at 534-3222.

VCS Program Recognizes Shipbuilders for Successful Ship Out of AMR Unit The Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program held luncheons for approximately 350 craftsmen and craftswomen to recognize them for their hard work in successfully shipping out the auxiliary machinery room (AMR) unit for Oregon (SSN 793). VCS leadership was in attendance at each of the three sessions that were held on each shift at the Covered Modular Assembly Facility (CMAF), to thank the shipbuilders for their teamwork in uniting together to make the SSN 793 one step closer to delivery. When Oregon’s AMR unit was shipped to General Dynamics Electric Boat, Newport News Shipbuilding’s VCS build partner in Connecticut at the beginning of the month, the unit was 99.4 percent complete – the second best AMR unit complete rate on record for the program. CMAF Superintendent Gerald Johnson (X82) congratulated the team, “I appreciate all that you have done to get this unit shipped out successfully. You have overcome challenges, met and exceeded goals, and worked together

to help make our program one step closer to delivering freedom of SSN 793. As you leave here today, I encourage you to continue working hard so that we can experience this type of success on every module.”

Shipbuilder Recognized for Safety Accomplishment On May 23, Shipbuilder Cecil Eley (X42) was recognized with a Certificate of Recognition from the OSHA, Area Director Stanley J. Dutko, Jr., and Newport News Shipbuilding leadership for 41 years of "accident-free" service to the company and dedication to the health and safety of his peers. To recognize his accomplishment, NNS President Matt Mulherin and Vice President of Supply Chain Management Rob Hogan presented Eley with a congratulatory letter and commemorative coin. Update: North Yard Excavation Project An article regarding parking in the North Yard and additional parking spaces at North Hidens was published in Currents on April 17, 2017. The information below is an update to that communication. To support construction of the Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF), Facilities has begun its planned excavation project in the North Yard parking area. As previously communicated, the project will be executed in eight phases, as shown on the map. The phases are expected to last through November 2017. The first two phases of construction are currently ongoing. As a result, approximately 300 parking spots are affected during these two phases of the project. As the phases are completed, updates will be provided and parking will gradually be reinstated. As of May 19, Facilities is gradually opening back affected parking from Phase 1. To accommodate the loss of parking, the company has expanded the North Hidens parking lot, located off Warwick Blvd. With the lot expansion, there are now more than 850 parking spaces at North Hidens. The lot is available to all employees. Employees who park in the lot can utilize the FREE Park-and-Ride shuttle service from this lot to and from the shipyard. The shuttle service operates from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. As a reminder, when the shuttle service is not operating, employees can use the company’s free taxi service, which is available from 7:15 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. to 1:10 a.m. Monday through Friday and can be scheduled by calling 846-7730. * The May Long Sevice Insert will be published in the June 5 edition of Currents

Dear Shipbuilders, This is my first yard-wide communication since it was announced that I’d be serving as your next president of Newport News Shipbuilding. Although my new position doesn’t officially begin until July 1, Matt Mulherin and I have begun our transition, and as you have hopefully heard, we’ll be holding town hall meetings across the shipyard, starting on June 1. I wanted to take this opportunity to personally invite you to attend. In these sessions, I’ll be discussing my vision for our future, and your role in it. The sessions will stretch out over a couple of weeks to reach every shipbuilder – all 20,000 of you. For those of you on second and third shifts, you’ll be one of our first visits. We intentionally scheduled you on “Day One”– or rather “Night One” – of these meetings. For those of you working offsite, we will be scheduling your meetings very soon, so please be on the lookout for those details. Open and candid communications is extremely important to all of us, and I commit to you that it will be a priority during my tenure. This means two-way communications, where your voice can also be heard. The town hall meetings will kick everything off, and I will continue to meet in person with groups of shipbuilders on an ongoing basis. I will also use other formats such as social media to help in this effort, and I am currently in the process of setting up ways for you to provide feedback directly to me. Thank you for your support during this transition, and for your great work each day. Serving as the 20th president of Newport News Shipbuilding, and the first woman to hold this position, is a responsibility that I am humbled, honored and ready to take on. I look forward to starting this new journey with all of you, and in building a very bright future together. So, let’s get started!

All the best,

Jennifer Boykin
