Columbia Program Celebrates New Facility A small group of shipbuilders gathered in the North Yard Service Area’s Large Enclosure facility in early May to acknowledge the initiation of on-site blast and coat production for Columbia-class submarines. “Every major module we build for the Columbia program has to pass through here at some point,” said David McGrain (O52), an engineer in Outsourcing who helped lead the project. Work in the North Yard Service Area – which supports blast and coat for large modules and small parts, as well as tile work – began in April. However, blast and coat work for the Columbia program has been ongoing for the past two years at a contractor’s facility in Hampton. The North Yard Service Area brings that work into the gates at Newport News Shipbuilding and accommodates modules that are too large to be transported off-site by truck. Blast and coat is a major milestone as work on modules transitions from heavy metal manufacturing to outfitting. The North Yard Service Area will allow NNS to support the future planned delivery of one Columbia-class submarine per year.

In addition to O52, McGrain said it was important to acknowledge the contributions of the Columbia Program Office (K07), Plant Engineering (O41), Supply Chain Procurement (O51), Main Industries Inc., and W.M. Jordan Co. for their roles in bringing the project to fruition.

said. “Sure enough, it was the casting crew saying I got selected. I thought it was a prank call from friends at first.” Henry, who has always been into fitness, grew up watching “American Ninja Warrior,” and has competition as his No. 2 CliftonStrength, participated in tough mudder competitions and Spartan races in the past. The decision to apply to the show stemmed from his performance at an Ultimate Backyard Warrior event in North Carolina in 2018.

“I’m the kind of person where I tell myself ‘If I can do it, I’m going to do it,’” said Nyjle Henry, a shipbuilder who competed on “American Ninja Warrior.”

Shipbuilder to Appear on “American Ninja Warrior” Nyjle Henry, a product owner at Newport News Shipbuilding, was selected to appear on NBC’s hit show “American Ninja Warrior,” airing the week of June 6-10. “The deadline was Dec. 15, 2021, and I got a phone call on Jan. 21, 2022,” Henry

“On a whim, I went out there to see how it is, and I did pretty terrible,” Henry said. “I got humbled pretty fast, and that was the moment when I decided to dedicate my fitness for ‘Ninja.’” He trained for about four years in preparation for his audition video, which included building some elements from the show – like the salmon ladder – in his backyard with his father. During the taping of the show, Henry was able to meet all the other competitors. “I know it’s a competition, but when you’re out there, everyone wants everyone to win,” he said. “It was great to be surrounded by people who shared my passion for this sport.”

Henry relates his “American Ninja Warrior” experience to NNS’ Enterprise Agility System (EAS) transformation. “We’re all on agile teams here working toward the same goal, and that’s how it is with Ninja as well,” he said. Every obstacle requires a certain strength, and if you have a weakness in that area, the other competitors were there to give instruction and advice for how to improve your skill. “If there’s an area you’re kind of weak in, you always have someone here at NNS who will help you out, because they want you to do well, too,” said Henry. “It’s always about the people sharing a common goal.” So what’s next? Henry has big plans for future fitness competitions, including the Spartan Trifecta (three races of increasing difficulty performed in a single year), competing again in Ultimate Backyard Warrior’s competitions, as well as possible additional appearances on “American Ninja Warrior.” Tune in to watch Henry compete on season 14 of “American Ninja Warrior” beginning June 6.

ASIAN Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month The Asian Shipbuilders Including All Nationalities (ASIAN) employee resource group hosted a panel discussion titled “Leveraging Asian Values in Your Career” May 12 in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month (AAPIHM). “It was pretty successful for our first in-person event in three years,” said Emmylou Mosley, ASIAN chair. “It was good to have an in-person event for our signature/heritage month event.” The COVID-19 pandemic and corresponding limits on social gatherings led ERGs like ASIAN to host virtual events in recent years. Panelists for this year’s event included E68 Manager Sonia Gopal, X23 Manager Leah Colvin and Radiological Control Director Jon Calma. All three shared information about their background, upbringing and careers at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Brent Ruffy, who serves on ASIAN’s Board, had a number of valuable takeaways from the event. He said it brought to light the importance of continuous learning and development, building relationships, mentorship – both as a mentor and mentee, and situational awareness of one’s environment and strengths and weaknesses. “Despite my cultural upbringing and ethics being very similar to Jon and Leah, the panelists as a whole brought motivational and constructive building blocks to better shape the person/teammate/ leader that I could strive to be,” he said. Mosley said she also related to the panelists background and upbringing that emphasized education. She was glad to hear the panelists talk about learning and growing out of their comfort zones, the importance of mentoring, building relationships and networking – even through ERG events.

Shipbuilders Lead the Way Second-shift X33 shipbuilders focus on creating a better, more efficient work environment for the nuclear trades performing work and mock-up training in Newport News Shipbuilding’s nuclear facilities. A clean and neatly organized facility enables all trades to feel safe while performing radiological work and builds confidence with the U.S. Navy. Each night, the team focuses on continuous improvement by tracking their progress, exchanging ideas and asking the right questions to ensure their performance meets NNS standards. The team understands working in a clean environment sets the

lead trades up for success and enables those teams to also lean in and continue keeping facilities sanitary. “On our team, everyone shares the same vision. Provide the cleanest facilities for nuclear work,” said Timothy Russell (X33). Setting the example in the early stages of job preparation instills the “Build Clean” mentality, which can then be taken and maintained as work progresses. Several nuclear facilities throughout the yard are maintained daily by X33 shipbuilders. “Receiving all of the positive feedback after the NAVSEA audit is a reminder to us that

we play an essential role in the success of the Nuclear Propulsion Division,” said X33 Foreman Lauren Davidson.
