New Vice President Named Brandi Smith has been named vice president of the Columbia-Class Submarine Program at Newport News Shipbuilding. She will succeed Charles Southall, who will retire July 1 after more than 35 years of distinguished service. NNS President Jennifer Boykin announced the news in a May 24 message to employees.

NNS Hosts “Top Gun” Screenings
Smith, an NNS shipbuilder since 2002, currently serves as program director of Columbia-class construction. She will assume her new role leading company-wide management, leadership, cost, schedule and technical performance of the Columbia program June 1. Smith will report to Matt Needy, vice president of Navy Programs.
Newport News Shipbuilding hosted advance screenings of “Top Gun: Maverick” last week for select groups of shipbuilders from all three shifts outside of work hours. The movie includes scenes filmed on NNS-built aircraft carriers USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). In addition to the advance screenings, NNS is providing ticket vouchers for 1,200 employees to view “Top Gun: Maverick” at their convenience while it is still showing in AMC Theatres. Divisions are handling ticket voucher distribution. takes the entire community working together to bring about lasting change. The U.S. Navy commissioned Virginiaclass submarine USS Oregon (SSN 793) Saturday, May 28, at Naval Submarine Base New London. Like all Virginia-class submarines, Oregon – the 20th boat of the class – was built at Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat.
