Top Gun Welders Honored for Outstanding Achievements On May 29, Component Fabrication and Assembly (CFA) leadership held a luncheon to honor “Top Gun” welders for their 2014 achievements. “Top Gun” welders are considered to be the best pipe welders within the CFA organization and are selected based on the number of pipe joints welded as well as the highest pass rate of pipe joints requiring a Radiographic Testing (RT) inspection. Before presenting each welder with a special “Top Gun” denim shirt, General Foreman Rob Lane congratulated the team for achieving more than 3,000 X-ray welds. “This is the largest number of welds our team has stacked up since 2001,” Lane said. “Clearly the number of welds is impressive, but it’s not just the volume, it’s

the quality performance that’s so outstanding and important.” Gary Fuller, director of Welding and Aylin Robertson, director of CFA, were also on hand to celebrate the welder’s accomplishments. Among the elite class of welders, Jake Fiala, Mabel Harris and Michael Taylor received special plaques for achieving “Top Gun” status for five or more consecutive years. Taylor said, “It feels great to receive this recognition. I’m grateful and blessed to have this opportunity.” The 2014 class also included five women and six first-time honorees. Pierrette Swan, one of the six new welders to become a “Top Gun,” said, “It’s an honor to be part of this group.”

The L.E.A.R.N. Program will host its first event of 2015. Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin will speak on the current state of NNS during an after-work event from 4:30-6 p.m. in the James River Room (B520-6) on Thursday, June 4. Prizes and refreshments will follow the presentation. The event is open to all employees and by reservation only. Visit the L.E.A.R.N. Yardnet website to sign up.
