Police, NNS Security to Increase Patrols 6 l 4 l 2018
In the May 21 edition of Currents, an article was published about increased patrols in the vicinity of the North Yard due to complaints received from residents in the area. The city of Newport News and Newport News Shipbuilding continue to receive reports regarding the following:
A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
• Illegally parked vehicles and oversized vehicles parked outside of barriers and blocking roadways • Excessive speeding and reckless driving on main roadways and side streets • Trespassing and littering on homeowners’ property • Pedestrians attempting to cross main roadways with oncoming traffic To address concerns, NNS Security and the Newport News Police Department will... Safety Shoe Fridays in the North Yard Shipbuilders working in the North Yard now have a more convenient option to purchase safety shoes and insoles. Tidewater Safety Shoes stages its mobile vendor truck outside of the 60th Street gate, next to the Welding School, from 6:30 until 8 a.m. and from 2:30 until 4 p.m. on the third Friday of each month. "I always try to make time to get down to the storefront, but sometimes that is challenging,” said Fitter Branden Taliaferro (X11), who visited the truck in May. “It was very convenient just to walk out of the gate and have the store right there to sell me a pair of steel-toe shoes." Huntington Avenue Bridge Replacement Project to Begin The city of Newport News' project to replace the Huntington Avenue bridge is scheduled to begin today, June 4, with completion anticipated in June 2019. However, the bridge will likely not close until mid-June as preparation work (such as installing detours, signage, traffic signals, etc.) must be completed before construction can begin. Employees should pay close attention to signage, detours and markings. As additional information becomes available, it will be communicated to employees. To learn more, view the Distribution A memo.

Safety Shoe Fridays in the North Yard CONTINUED FROM PG 1
The idea for the partnership with Tidewater Safety Shoes came earlier this year, when John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Safety Task teams began a quest to make purchasing safety shoes and insoles easier for employees. “When our teams learned that the majority of our craftsmen and craftswomen needed additional comfort for their feet, we decided to approach the Program Office. This new service is one step forward to making it more convenient and easy for employees to get what they need,” said Dry Dock 12 Safety Task Team Lead Willie Clark (X11). The new service – which will continue through the end of the year – supports shipbuilders who work all three shifts with five different types of shoe insoles and a variety of safety shoes available for
purchase via cash, credit card or payroll deduction. Insoles start at $12 per pair. “This is a great example of effective communication between employees and management and it is another step toward improving the quality of life for our employees. I’d like to thank our Safety Task Teams for being proactive about safety every day,” said Lucas Hicks, vice president of CVN 79 Aircraft Carrier Construction. Shipbuilders who want to take advantage of the service are encouraged to visit Tidewater Safety Shoes' website to view the store's inventory. Employees can call 240-4225 to preorder items from the website.
LGBT Pride Month: Michele Ray-Bannon June is LGBT Pride Month. The theme for this year’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) monthly recognition campaign is "Unite Our Voices by Speaking Together." As part of the campaign, four employees will be featured during each recognition month – two from within the featured demographic and two outside of it. Employees will share personal stories, insight and perspectives on what the month means to them. Features will be published in Currents, the NNS to Go app, MyNNS and HII social media channels. When Michele Ray-Bannon came to Newport News Shipbuilding in 1990, she was reluctant to talk about her personal life at work – particularly the fact that she was gay. “I didn’t tell anybody. I didn’t want to be ostracized,” she said. Ray-Bannon knew people made assumptions about her sexual orientation, but it was a few years into her career at NNS when a fellow shipbuilder asked directly. She answered truthfully and was surprised by the response. “It turned out no one had a problem with it at all,” Ray-Bannon said. Currently a supervisor of Test Inspection in the Supplier Inspection Department (O58), Ray-Bannon leads a crew of 14 that is responsible for inspecting materials that come into the yard. “We inspect nuts, bolts, valve assemblies – you name it,” she said. “I love my job and making sure that we’re
sending quality work to the waterfront.” Ray-Bannon applauds the company’s inclusion and diversity efforts, which she said make it a more attractive employer. “There’s not a stigma that holds people back just because of who they are or who they love,” she said. “Everybody is different, and if you aren’t accepting, you will lose a lot of very talented people.” Now, Ray-Bannon doesn’t hesitate to engage in small talk with coworkers about she and her wife’s weekend plans, for instance. She has even had shipbuilders come to her for advice when they find out a family member is gay. “To me, Pride Month is a time to reflect on how far we’ve come. Years ago, members of the LGBT community felt like we had to hide at home, and then we came to work and hid. It’s nice to come to work and be able to talk about your life outside of the shipyard. You’re not hiding, and you’re respected for who you are. It’s a great thing,” Ray-Bannon said. View Ray-Bannon's poster on MyNNS. Employees interested in participating in this year’s I&D campaign should visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/id-campaign-2018.

CURRENTS 3 The completed RCF module was sent to Norfolk Naval Shipyard in April for incorporation into USS San Francisco (SSN 711), which will become one of two training submarines moored in Charleston, South Carolina. Despite the fact that this was NNS’ first time doing this type of work, the project was finished on time and under budget. “I am incredibly proud and humbled by what our Virginia-class team can do,” said VCS Construction Superintendent Stewart Welch.

Shipbuilders Complete Module Outfitting A team of Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program shipbuilders recently completed outfitting the Reactor Compartment Forward (RCF) module for a Los Angeles-class submarine that is undergoing conversion into a moored training ship. The conversion involves inserting brand new modules into the existing ship structure. The RCF module – built at General Dynamics Electric Boat – arrived at Newport News Shipbuilding for outfitting last fall. The project was estimated to take 13 months, but NNS shipbuilders evaluated and executed the schedule in seven months. Work included welding the side passageway to the hull, installing an upper-level walkway, loading lead ballast, fitting nine piping systems and ventilation and electrical work. “It was a great experience,” said Nortasha Richardson (X31), who worked on the project. “This was a first-time project, and everybody came together and did a good job working together.”
Shipbuilders also dealt with an abbreviated planning window. “I just think the team was eager to accept a new challenge and wanted to show people that we could do it,” said Cody Connell (X36), who worked on the project. Construction Supervisor Malik Whitaker said the project’s success was the result of great teamwork. “It took multiple shifts – and a lot of communication among the trades – to allow us to finish this job on time,” he said. “It wouldn’t have happened without people being dedicated to the project and focused on the goal.” Unlike the normal VCS workflow, this was a one-time project, said X31 General Foreman Scott Spangler. “There was only one chance to make it happen, and this team did it,” he said. Asked why the project was so successful, the team provided two consistent responses – teamwork and material availability.
Manufacturing and Material Logistics' Golf Outing Supports Service Members, Families The Manufacturing and Material Logistics Division raised $3,200 to support Hope For The Warriors during its annual golf outing April 21 at the Cypress Creek Golf Course in Smithfield. “It’s always a pleasure to sponsor this annual event. I appreciate the work of all the volunteers and the turnout of players to support such a great organization,” said Rob Hogan, vice president of Manufacturing and Material Distribution. Hope For The Warriors works to enhance the quality of life for post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty. Hope For The Warriors is dedicated to restoring a sense of self, restoring the family unit and restoring hope for service members and military families.

Shipbuilders Overcome Challenges to Finish Project on Time Structural Fabrication and Assembly’s Platen 17 Strut Assembly team has earned a reputation for producing quality industrial strut assemblies for multiple product lines at Newport News Shipbuilding and beyond.
Determined to meet Ingalls’ requested delivery date, shipbuilders mapped out a plan across shift operations and support needs and were able to complete the project on time without impacting cost, safety or quality.
“Excellent job by Superintendent Rusty Johnson and the team. They all leaned in to do everything possible to meet Ingalls’ schedule date,” said Component Fabrication and Assembly Director Bob Schatzel.
During the first quarter of 2018, the team completed eight strut assemblies, comprising 13 feet of weld of varying material thickness with a 100 percent ultrasonic testing pass rate and no injuries.
“We were at work anywhere from 14 to 16 hours a day. It felt great to see all the different trades come together to get such a project done in a timely manner,” said Christopher Vassura (X11). “They came to us with a challenge and we tackled it head on.”
The project team included Rusty Johnson; fitters: Michael Arden, Herman Batts Jr., Allen Cathey, David Christian, Paul Evans, Steven Harrell, Robert Morris III, Christopher Vassura and Anthony Williams Sr.; welders: Frank Arquette, Michael Bryson, William Burkes, Robert Gallant, Chance Petrie and Darnell Prigmore; foremen: Kenneth Bedio, Jason Dillingham, Craig Fillmore, Andrew Fletcher, Ray Lane, Roy McDaniel and Travis Robinson; and general foremen: Austin Glover, Duke Mitchell and Danny Narron.
Just a few months ago, the team went to work producing strut assemblies for guidedmissile destroyer Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG 121), currently under construction at Ingalls Shipbuilding. However, challenges such as limited resources and lost time due to inclement weather, made meeting the early February delivery date difficult.
The team of dedicated shipbuilders worked through the holidays, attempted concurrent activities where possible and focused on firsttime quality. “Teamwork, knowledge of your craft, continued focus and first-time quality are just a few major factors that played a role in completing this major job in the time that we did,” said Michael Bryson (X18).
Service Desk Launching Chat Portal A new chat capability will be added to the IT Service Desk in the coming weeks. The new service will be an addition to the current web portal and the 688-HELP phone line and will: • Support the company's digital transformation • Increase productivity through multitasking • Remove language barriers • Broaden communication channels • Support real-time convenience for employees Look for additional information about the portal in future editions of Currents.

11th Annual SNAME Boat Design Competition Held The Apprentice School Student Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) hosted race day for its annual Boat Design Competition for high school students in May at The Mariners’ Museum. During race day, the final four teams of high school students raced boats they designed that were built by shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding. This year’s winning team – Cruise Control from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland – topped nearly 50 entrants to become the first out-of-state winner in the competition’s history. Please be respectful and think about duty-of-care for all. As shipbuilders, it’s our responsibility.” As a reminder, employees who have ideas to improve parking, company transportation and/or pedestrian safety at NNS should send an email to ParkingSolutions@hii-nns.com.
Miner Speaks at L.E.A.R.N. Event L.E.A.R.N hosted an after-work presentation with Chris Miner, vice president of InService Aircraft Carrier Programs, in April. Miner discussed the importance of inclusion and diversity at Newport News Shipbuilding. During the talk, Miner shared company statistics and talking points from the February 2018 Take 5 for Inclusion and Diversity. Approximately 100 shipbuilders attended the presentation, along with remote employees from New York. “All discussions on the importance of embracing and fostering inclusion and diversity are good discussions. I am happy to see the steps NNS is taking both to raise awareness to the importance of inclusion and diversity efforts and start the conversations. As Mr. Miner stated, we still have a lot of work to do, but we’re moving in the right direction,” said Carole Sterling (T55). To view Miner’s presentation, visit the L.E.A.R.N website.
