CVN 78 Delivered to Navy Newport News Shipbuilding delivered Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) to the U.S. Navy on Wednesday, May 31. The announcement came after the carrier returned to its homeport in Norfolk following acceptance trials. “Today is a historic day for Newport News Shipbuilding and one that is personally rewarding for me,” said NNS President Matt Mulherin. “I’ve had the pleasure of watching our shipbuilders bring this great warship to life. From her first cut of steel to her final round of testing, Ford is proof of our shipbuilders’ exceptional skills and talents. I am proud of their innovation, perseverance and unwavering commitment that has built the most advanced aircraft carrier in the world. We are honored to deliver Gerald R. Ford to the... ...Navy, and we do so with full confidence in her unmatched power and ability to sail the seas in protection of our freedom for the next half century.” Ford is the product of years of construction, planning and design. More than 5,000 shipbuilders in Newport News and thousands of suppliers across the United States contributed to the first-of-class ship. “On behalf of our shipbuilders, I can say we are all proud to have
been a part of the Gerald R. Ford construction program,” said Rolf Bartschi, vice president of CVN 78 Carrier Construction. “This great ship will serve our nation for the next 50 years, and it will offer our Navy and sailors the most technologically advanced platform to carry out their missions.” Watch a video highlighting CVN 78 milestones. Congratulations to all shipbuilders who had a part in the planning, construction, and delivery of this great ship.
LGBT Pride Month Feature: Carl Prendergast Newport News Shipbuilding will recognize LGBT Pride Month throughout the month of June. This year's theme is, “Our Pride is Building” and four versions of an awareness poster have been distributed to worksites across the shipyard; each poster features one NNS shipbuilder. For the remainder of June, a question and answer feature highlighting each shipbuilder will be published in Currents and on the NNS to Go app.
What does being inclusive mean to you? It means being open and giving everyone the opportunity to participate and contribute.
This week’s spotlight is on Shipfitter and Make-Up Foreman Carl Prendergast (X11). Prendergast has worked at NNS for seven years.
Why is it important that our company is inclusive and diverse? Because we can’t keep building the world’s greatest ships if we can’t keep improving them. There are so many talented people that work here that can benefit the shipyard – we need everyone’s help. In addition, the more inclusive and diverse we are as a company, the better chance we have of attracting talent.
Why do you think it's important for the company to spread awareness about LGBT Pride Month? It shows current employees, future employees, and communities that the shipyard cares about its people and their struggles.
In your opinion, is the company moving in a positive direction in terms of employees being more inclusive of others? Yes, it has for a lot of things. I think people are getting opportunities to prove themselves that wouldn’t have been allowed 10 to 20 years ago.
Also, hourly and salaried shipbuilders are not as divided as they used to be – but there is still room for improvement. View Prendergast’s poster on MyNNS.

Shipbuilder Steering the Way Recently, Nuclear Engineer James Davis (E81) discovered a cleanliness violation with a vendor product and developed an action plan to correct the violation. Davis could have easily ignored the issue to avoid additional work, but chose to formally report it to correct appropriate personnel. To recognize Davis’ honesty and integrity, Mary Cullen, vice president of Nuclear Propulsion, presented Davis with a Level 1 Ethics Award on May 23. "James did what he thought was right, knowing that it would be more work," said Cullen. "Regardless of the schedule pressures we have to get the work done on time, we all have the obligation to stop and ask ourselves what is the right thing to do. I’m proud of James for setting this example amongst his peers.” Want to nominate a fellow employee for an On-the-Spot Ethics Award? If so, visit the EEO, Ethics and Compliance website on MyNNS or contact Catrina Hagwood (O18) at 688-1907.

Dear Shipbuilders, After 36 years of dedicated service, Rolf Bartschi, vice president of CVN 78 Construction, has announced his intention to retire on June 30. Rolf has served at the helm of the CVN 78 program since 2010, and his retirement follows the successful sea trials and delivery of our nation’s newest aircraft carrier, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Rolf began his shipbuilding career in 1981 as a test engineer in the submarine construction program. I am fortunate to have worked with him since those early days, and can definitively say that throughout his career – no matter what program he was supporting – he has always demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Newport News Shipbuilding. Having spent most of his career supporting nuclear construction, test and engineering, Rolf has made significant contributions not only to our company, but also to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Please join me in congratulating Rolf on his retirement, and in thanking him for more than three decades of distinguished service. With this change and now that the Ford has been delivered to the Navy, responsibility for the ship’s post-delivery work and Post Shakedown Availability will fall under Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Carrier Programs. Dave Batdorf, CVN 78 program director, will support this work and will report to Chris. These changes become effective July 1.
Sincerely,
Matt Mulherin President
