Ford Completes First FullShip Shock Trial Event

USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) successfully completed the first scheduled explosive event as part of full-ship shock trials Friday, June 18. The first-in-class aircraft carrier was designed using advanced computer modeling methods, testing and analysis to ensure the ship is hardened to withstand battle conditions. These shock trials provide data used in validating the shock hardness of the ship. The Navy has conducted full-ship shock trials over several decades, most recently for littoral combat ships USS Jackson (LCS 6) and USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) in 2016. The last aircraft carrier to execute full-ship shock trials was USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in 1987. Ford’s shock trials are being conducted off the East Coast, within a narrow schedule that complies with environmental mitigation requirements, respecting known migration patterns of marine life in the test area. The Navy also has employed extensive protocols throughout full-ship shock trials to ensure the safety of military and civilian personnel participating in the testing evolution. Ford closed out a successful 18-month post-delivery test and trials period in April, during which the crew completed all required testing, accomplished planned improvements and maintenance ahead of schedule, and learned valuable lessons to increase the reliability of... High School Seniors “Sign On” With NNS and The Apprentice School Newport News Shipbuilding Talent Acquisition and The Apprentice School participated in the Good Life Solution Selection Day Ceremony with high school seniors on May 24 at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton. Twenty students accepted full-time entry-level trade position offers at NNS, and seven students accepted offers to attend The Apprentice School.

“Selection Day is a day filled with excitement and promise from students, employers, GLS and community partners. It’s when preparation meets opportunity.” said Xavier Beale, vice president of Trades. “These students have prepared and are eager to begin meaningful careers that will help our nation meet critical workforce demands – which are instrumental in ensuring that the United States maintains our global competiveness and commitment to democracy.” NNS and The Apprentice School have participated in this annual event since 2018.

Amy O’Donnell (O43) lost both of her parents to cancer. Her dad died from pancreatic cancer a few months before she graduated college, and her mom passed away from uterine cancer five years ago.

...Ford-class systems. At the same time, the ship also served as the sole East Coast platform for conducting carrier qualifications.

She described her father, who earned a Bronze Star for combat in Vietnam, as humble, kind and funny. She said her mom had an amazing sense of humor and warm, positive attitude. O’Donnell’s mom once chose a cross-country train trip to see her grandchildren rather than continue treatment after her cancer had returned in an aggressive form. “Try to capture special memories in a diary or video,” O’Donnell said. Cancer can take the lives of loved ones, but it cannot take their memories and legacies. “I am so thankful that I had them as parents, but very sad at how many life events and milestones they missed due to this disease,” she said. Newport News Shipbuilding is a sponsor of the 2021 Peninsula Relay For Life, which will be held from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. on June 26 at Hampton Roads Academy. O’Donnell is participating with the Facilities Cancer Fighters Team. Visit www.RelayForLife.org/NNS or the Relay For Life website on MyNNS to donate, register, or join a team. For more information on registration and donation, contact Amy Prillaman (O93) or Jenn Cherry (O22).

Upon completion of full-ship shock trials later this summer, Ford – built at Newport News Shipbuilding and commissioned in 2017 – will enter a planned incremental availability for six months of modernization, maintenance and repairs prior to its operational employment.

Reminders from the Hazardous Energy Council In the past 24 months, Newport News Shipbuilding has experienced an increase in injuries and near misses related to the unexpected release of stored and potential energy. Because of this upward trend, the Hazardous Energy Council reminds shipbuilders of the potential hazards that often are overlooked. Some recent incidents resulted in injuries that could have been prevented. Shipbuilders should be on the lookout for suspended loads from cranes and JLGs, use caution when plugging and unplugging pneumatic lines and equipment and ensure that items on staging are properly secured. They also should keep an eye out for potential pinch points and always be on the lookout for changing conditions in their work area. Maintain a questioning attitude, never become complacent and always remember to REC (Recognize, Evaluate, Control) your work area for hazards, including those related to stored and potential energy. If you see something that appears to be unsafe, immediately report it to your supervisor or another member of management.

AROUND THE YARD PEER Program Adapts to Challenges Newport News Shipbuilding’s Professional Enhancement & Enrichment Rotation (PEER) Program and its participants continue to successfully navigate through stormy seas. The PEER Program – which allows salaried individual contributors to complete four six-month rotations in departments across NNS – developed its I.C.A.R.E. brand in 2019 to communicate the program’s standards: innovative, collaborative, adaptive, results driven and engaged. “No one could have known how relevant the brand would become prior to 2020’s COVID-19 challenges and 2021’s cost pressures,” said Gary Figg, PEER Program manager. Members of PEER Cohort 12 completed their two-year development journey in December 2020, undaunted by the challenges of COVID-19. The 28 shipbuilders developed a capstone presentation by applying the I.C.A.R.E. attributes and pulling together for greater social awareness and growth. Social distancing, face masks, WebEx meetings and a team spirit to succeed resulted in the first all video PEER Capstone, produced with support from the Training Services Multimedia Team (O36). Watch the video on MyNNS. Members of PEER Cohort 17 will start their journey July 1, as the program adapts to leaner practices. Candidates participated in introductory lunch and learn and open house events during off hours, and PEER resident assistants – PEER Program graduates – supported Cohort 17’s onboarding to the PEER family. “Consistently being innovative, collaborative, adaptive, results driven and engaged has prepared the PEER Program and participants to calmly navigate through stormy seas,” Figg said. “As Franklin Roosevelt once said, ‘A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.’” The PEER Program is available to full-time, salaried individual contributors. For more information about the program, contact Gary Figg via email.

CARES Act Reimbursement Survey Extended Through June 22 Employees who used Paid Time Off (PTO), Annual Leave (AL), Vacation (VAC) or Paid Personal/Sick Time for COVID-19-related reasons from March 15, 2020, through March 28, 2021, could be eligible for reimbursement. Visit the HII CARES Act Paid Leave Survey webpage for more information and frequently asked questions. To allow employees additional time to respond, or to gather and submit documentation, the survey has been extended through Tuesday, June 22.

NNS President Jennifer Boykin talks with summer interns. Photo by Lena Wallace

NNS President Meets With Interns Newport News Shipbuilding’s summer interns met with NNS President Jennifer Boykin June 15. “There is a lot of reverse mentoring going on when we have interns here,” Boykin said. “You are at the forefront of your professional experience no matter where you go from here.” The 25 interns are expected to learn the company’s core values while working in their respective home departments. Boykin encouraged interns to bring fresh ideas to engineering projects and Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS). “I am excited to learn the ins and outs of my department,” said Carlos Lavezzari Torres, a reactor plant planning intern who attends the University of Puerto Rico. “Being at the shipyard makes me want to learn more about how the real world works.” Interns will engage in community outreach activities later this summer.

Myth: I already had COVID-19 and recovered. I don’t need the vaccine. Facts: If you’ve recovered from the virus, doctors aren’t sure how long natural immunity lasts, according to Johns Hopkins. With that in mind, you are potentially at risk of getting COVID-19 again unless you get vaccinated.

Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 Cases reported last week: 3

Total cases at NNS: 3,584

NNS employees medically cleared to return to work: 2,955

NNS employees vaccinated: 51%
