Ford Bales Visits NNS for EMALS Testing Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Ship’s Sponsor Susan Ford Bales visited Newport News Shipbuilding June 15-16 to meet with Ford shipbuilders and crew and to watch testing of the aircraft carrier’s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). During the demonstration, several “dead-load” sleds, weighing up to 80,000 pounds to simulate the weight of an actual aircraft, were launched off the carrier’s bow. “The EMALS system on the Ford is truly one of a kind,” said Ford Bales. “There’s a reason this is the most unique and the most powerful catapult system ever built. The reason is straightforward. This catapult - like this mighty aircraft carrier - is built by the finest shipbuilders in the world.” EMALS is capable of launching aircraft weighing up to 100,000 pounds, requires less manning to maintain and operate, and is approximately 10 times more efficient than steam. Shipbuilders Recognized for Ethical Actions The following shipbuilders were recently recognized by their division vice president for their ethical actions in the workplace.
Engineers Steve Dartt (O57), Ranae Staten-Myles (E45) and Tony Spense (E45) discovered the potential write-off of $53,000 of material that supposedly had an expired cure date. After the material was re-inspected, it was discovered that the material had erroneously been tagged as expired when in fact, only $300 worth of the material should have been tagged. This allowed for a cost avoidance of $52,700. Pictured (L to R): Dave Modzelewski (E33), Dartt, Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, Staten-Myles and Spense.

What You Need to Know About HOT WEATHER LIBERAL LEAVE With the recent hot weather, this is a good opportunity to review how decisions are made with regards to the company’s liberal leave policy and what accommodations are made to reduce heat stress and keep employees safe. Q. Why do we have a liberal leave policy for hot weather? A. The reason we have this policy is for the health and safety of our employees. That is always the guiding factor used in making the decision to offer hot-weather liberal leave. Liberal leave is intended to prevent heat stress, illness and injury due to environmental conditions. Q. How does NNS determine if liberal leave will be offered? A. There are two factors that will trigger consideration for liberal leave – the outside heat index and employee working conditions. Based on these factors, a governing council of representatives from each of the programs will make a recommendation for liberal leave. The recommendation is then sent to senior leadership for approval. Q. What conditions are used to determine if liberal leave will be offered? A. If the following conditions are met and no alternative work is available, liberal leave for hot weather may be offered: ➠ Outside heat index in excess of 105 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees in June). ➠ The number of people working in high-heat conditions that are most exposed to the sun’s heat, such as platens, dry docks, and material yards. ➠ Work areas where accommodations cannot be made for employees to move to cooler locations or there is no opportunity to access fans or other ventilation to reduce the effect of heat at the worksite. ➠ There is no opportunity to allow frequent breaks to prevent heat stress. Q. How do you find out if you are eligible for liberal leave? A. Your supervisor should notify you in person. Second shift employees can also call the Employee Information Phone Line (1-877-871-2058). OVER ➠
MORE ON HOT WEATHER LIBERAL LEAVE Q. How does liberal leave affect my work shift? A. During liberal leave, some first shift employees may be released at 12:00 p.m. However, some employees may be released at a time later than 12:00 p.m., depending on their job assignment and work conditions. Second shift start for liberal leave is 5:30 p.m. and shift end is 12:00 a.m. Q. If liberal leave is authorized, do I have to take it? A. When hot weather liberal leave is authorized, there may be some employees who want to stay, despite the heat. Management will make efforts to accommodate employees; however, in no case will employees be allowed to work in unsafe conditions. Q. If I take liberal leave, how do I charge my time? A. Hourly employees who are offered liberal leave have the option of using annual leave or dock time. If an hourly employee takes dock time, supervisors should enter the company Pass-Out Code (13) into TAS so that employee overtime, if any, is not impacted. Salaried employees (non-exempt or exempt) who are approved for liberal leave may use PTO if they have a balance available, borrow PTO, or Flex with their supervisor’s approval. Q. When liberal leave is not offered, what accommodations are made to prevent injuries and illnesses due to heat? A. In order to help reduce heat related injuries and illnesses and to provide for more comfortable working conditions, NNS will continue to offer increased supplies of ice, air amplifiers, cooling apparel for select, high-heat job functions and locations, fans for cooling, and continued education on how to prevent and recognize heat related illnesses will be used as needed. Q. If liberal leave is not offered in my work location and I want to leave, what are my options? A. Hourly employees may request vacation but final right to grant vacation is reserved by the Company in order to ensure the orderly operations of the shipyard. Hourly employees may also take dock time, but Pass-Out Code (13) will not be entered into TAS for overtime purposes. Salaried non-exempt employees and salaried exempt employees must use PTO or flex with their supervisor’s approval. Q. If there is a red or black heat alert flag in my work area, does that mean liberal leave will be offered? A. No. A red flag (heat index is between 91-104.9 degrees) or black flag (heat index is 105 degrees or above) does not mean liberal leave will be offered. Program representatives post flags in work areas to alert employees when high heat conditions are forecasted so that employees can take proper hot weather precautions. Q. What weather forecast are used to determine high-heat conditions? A. While we review many weather reporting systems, we largely rely on the AccuWeather Real Feel Heat Index forecast.
