Ford Bales Visits NNS for EMALS Testing Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Ship’s Sponsor Susan Ford Bales visited Newport News Shipbuilding June 15-16 to meet with Ford shipbuilders and crew and to watch testing of the aircraft carrier’s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). During the demonstration, several “dead-load” sleds, weighing up to 80,000 pounds to simulate the weight of an actual aircraft, were launched off the carrier’s bow. “The EMALS system on the Ford is truly one of a kind,” said Ford Bales. “There’s a reason this is the most unique and the most powerful catapult system ever built. The reason is straightforward. This catapult - like this mighty aircraft carrier - is built by the finest shipbuilders in the world.” EMALS is capable of launching aircraft weighing up to 100,000 pounds, requires less manning to maintain and operate, and is approximately 10 times more efficient than steam.
