Warner Delivered

A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding

Newport News Shipbuilding delivered John Warner (SSN 785) to the U.S. Navy on June 25. Warner, the first Virginia-class submarine to be named for a person, was delivered two and a half months ahead of schedule. “This submarine embodies the spirit of John Warner and symbolizes his unwavering support for the Navy and the shipyard,” said Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support. “It’s truly special to have a boat named after a living person, and we as shipbuilders are proud to deliver John Warner to the Navy because this submarine will continue Senator Warner’s enduring legacy.” Nearly 4,000 shipbuilders have worked on the Warner since construction began in 2010. NNS Breaks Ground for Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility Newport News Shipbuilding broke ground for its new Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF) on Monday, June 22. The new facility will be used to support construction of aircraft carriers and submarines. The first phases of the facility, opening in 2017, will feature production bays to improve construction efficiencies under current contracts for the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier and Virginia-class submarine programs. “We aren’t just breaking ground on a new facility, we’re breaking the mold on how we build aircraft carriers and submarines,” said NNS President Matt Mulherin, explaining how the JMAF will bring work indoors, providing better quality of life for shipbuilders. “The improvements will increase productivity and efficiency, all while driving down overall cost and ensuring schedule performance.”

The facility will feature multiple worksites, advanced technology, automated equipment, heavyweight cranes, large transportation doors and specialty paint bays. The facility will support current and future production work on aircraft carriers and submarines. CONTINUED ON PG 3

SN3 to Continue Disposal Operations at Hanford Site On June 29, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that its Stoller Newport News Nuclear (SN3) subsidiary, together with contract partner Wastren Advantage Inc., was awarded a two-year extension to continue disposal operations at the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington. The total contract, valued at up to $65 million, will expire in September 2017. Washington Closure Hanford (WCH), the awarding agency, operates the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility for the Department of Energy. “We are extremely pleased the WCH has chosen to exercise the first option period of our contract,” said SN3 President Nick Lombardo. “We believe this reflects the value we have provided to the Hanford Site for safe and compliant operations.”

Shipbuilders Volunteer at PrideFest Newport News Shipbuilding was a sponsor of this year’s PrideFest at Town Point Park in Norfolk, Saturday, June 27. At the NNS tent, volunteers handed out NNS tattoos, koozies and information about shipbuilding careers. Festival attendees who stopped by NNS’ tent were also given the opportunity to spin the NNS wheel for a chance to win a prize. “I think that it was great that the company sponsored PrideFest this year because it shows our diversity and excellence to excel as a company,” said Angela Davis (O95), who helped man NNS’ tent. “Many people came to the tent to express their amazement with the company and its support.” Pictured: Pat Travis and Angela Davis (O95) volunteer at NNS’ tent at PrideFest on Saturday. In the 1940s, the Hanford Site was used to produce plutonium for weapons production processes that left solid and liquid wastes, posing a risk to the local environment. In 1989, the Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and Washington State Department of Ecology entered into a legally binding accord, the Tri-Party Agreement, to clean up the Hanford Site. The tournament has been held every year since 2001 and proceeds benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization that raises money to help find a cure for T1 diabetes. “Hannah Speight was diagnosed at the age of 7 with juvenile diabetes,” said Junior Adams (O19). “She is now 17 years old and going into her senior year of high school. Since 2011, the ‘Walk for Hannah’ team has raised over $44,000 for the JDRF. The team started out raising money for the annual Yorktown diabetes walk, but kept the name and continues to use it for the annual golf tournament.”

Relocation of 500 parking spaces will be completed before construction of the facility begins. NNS Planning Bid for Navy LDUUV Contract Inside Defense reported June 22 that Newport News Shipbuilding is planning to bid for the U.S. Navy’s Large Displacement Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (LDUUV) contract. The story cited Ken Mahler, Newport News’ vice president of Navy Programs, who touted the Proteus UUV built by HII’s Undersea Solutions Group subsidiary. “We’re looking to leverage that … with this Large Displacement Unmanned Underwater Vehicle request for proposals that we expect to come out,” he said.
