Governor Announces Hiring Partnership with NNS Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced June 26 that various state agencies and regional community colleges will work with Newport News Shipbuilding to augment ongoing efforts to hire as many as 7,000 new shipbuilders over the next five years. “Newport News Shipbuilding’s success is important not just for Hampton Roads, but for the entire commonwealth,” Northam said. “Therefore, it is critical that we support growth of this magnitude with an innovative partnership between state agencies that will address the company’s workforce and training needs and ensure a pipeline of skilled talent. To remain competitive in a 21st century economy, it is a priority to provide workforce solutions that connect Virginians to the skills, training and opportunities required to meet companies’ needs in high-demand sectors. I thank Huntington Ingalls Industries and Newport News Shipbuilding for its long-term commitment to the commonwealth and applaud all the state partners involved in this groundbreaking initiative.” The collaboration is expected to bolster NNS’ recruitment of people to meet its anticipated workforce demands in the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier and Virginia-class submarine programs. It also will support production of Columbia-class ballistic submarines, as well as increased submarine fleet support work and the refueling and complex overhaul and defueling of Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. NNS Hiring 175 Engineers this Summer Newport News Shipbuilding’s Engineering and Design (E&D) and Nuclear Propulsion (NPD) divisions are hiring 175 engineers this summer. To be considered, qualified external candidates must apply to engineering job openings in either the Students & New Grad portal or the Professionals portal at www.buildyourcareer.com. Qualified current employees who are interested must apply in the Current Employees portal. E&D has 83 opportunities available for level 1 engineers – including mechanical, electrical, engineer software, system engineers, and structural engineers. The division has 35 opportunities available for level 2 engineers – including mechanical, electrical, engineer software, system engineers, electromechanical, mod sim, and structural engineers. NPD has 42 opportunities available for level 1 engineers and 15 for level 2 engineers – including mechanical and electrical. To meet this need, E&D, NPD and Talent Acquisition are hosting group hiring events for external level 1 engineer candidates. E&D and Talent Acquisition are hosting additional group hiring events for level 2 engineers. These events are by invitation only, and candidates must first apply online for consideration. Current employees will interview onsite and do not need to participate in the group hiring events. Group hiring events will not be held for level 2 engineer opportunities within NPD. As a reminder, NNS is currently offering $1,000 cash bonus awards to employees who refer level 1 or 2 electrical engineers. To refer someone, complete the online form at www.huntingtoningalls.com/careers/refer-a-friend. Cash bonuses are awarded after the referred individuals start work at NNS.

...42nd Street on July 5. Pedestrian control barriers are being constructed this week along the west side of Washington Avenue between 42nd and 39th streets to allow for smooth traffic flow between established crosswalks. The fence at the 40th Street shipyard railroad cut will also be closed this
weekend. Pedestrians and vehicles will be able to access the East Yard via the gate at 40th Street and Warwick Boulevard. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to pay attention to all signage and allow extra time for travel during the project. For more information, see the Distribution A memo or watch a video on MyNNS.
NNS Store Celebrating Upcoming Opening with Giveaways NNS Spear & Gear – the online store for all Newport News Shipbuilding- and Huntington Ingalls Industries-branded products – is celebrating its upcoming opening with giveaways. Free sunglasses with the NNS Spear & Gear logo will be placed around the yard this week for shipbuilders. The glasses will be in plain sight and available to any shipbuilder who sees them. Select sunglasses will have a sticker on the packaging informing the shipbuilder that they have won another giveaway, but must present the sticker to one of the sales associates at the first pop-up at “The Rock” on July 18 to claim their prize. “We are very excited for the grand opening of NNS Spear & Gear and want to share that excitement with our shipbuilders by giving them items that will be available on our website and at the pop-ups,” said Kimberly Zayakosky, public relations and protocol manager. The online store, accessible at www.nnsspearandgear.com, launches July 16.
Parking Updates West Avenue Garage Effective immediately and until further notice, Newport News Shipbuilding employees with any color NNS parking decal can park on the top deck of the West Avenue Garage, located between 30th and 31st streets. Please note this does not include the ramp leading to the top deck. NNS external shuttles pick up and drop off at the 31st Street Gate and transport riders to 50th, 46th, 42nd and 31st streets. Employees are encouraged to download and use the NNXPRESS app to locate company shuttles and get an estimated time of arrival for the shuttles servicing this garage.

The spaces will be close to shipyard gates and employees with any color NNS decal can park in these spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. More information about where these spaces will be located and when signage will be posted will be forthcoming. Please continue to check Currents and NNS to Go for additional information.

NNS Dedicates American Flag in JMAF Shipbuilders and contractors gathered at Newport News Shipbuilding’s Joint Manufacturing and Assembly Facility (JMAF) on Flag Day to dedicate a new 30-foot-by-60-foot American flag permanently hung in the facility. The ceremony stemmed from the “Pride in What We Do” Quality of Life Initiative. “If you think about our flag, the stripes remind us of the 13 colonies that boldly declared independence back in 1776. The stars represent the 50 states. The color red represents valor. The color white represents goodness, and the color blue represents justice,” said Barry Fallon, director of Structural Fabrication and
He encouraged shipbuilders to use the flag as a reminder of the importance of quality. The flag overlooks a state-of-the-art fixture that will be used to build bows and sterns for Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines. Matt Needy, vice president of Operations, and Chandra McCulleyHooker, trade director for the Submarine Program, also spoke during the ceremony. Needy reminded shipbuilders to take pride in delivering freedom. McCulley-Hooker thanked shipbuilders for what they do every day “to build these great, warfighting machines.” At the end of the program, Rochelle Robbins (O62) led attendees in chanting, “We build proud for America.” Welders Andrew Wilson (X18) and Matthew Rymer (X18) attended the flag dedication ceremony and may eventually work in the facility. “It was nice to learn what each color of the flag stands for,” Wilson said.
New Crane Continues to Take Shape Last week, crews conducted a 230-metricton lift to position the north leg of Newport News Shipbuilding's new 315-metric-ton Goliath gantry crane. Additional significant lifts – including the crane’s main girders with trolleys installed – are expected in the coming weeks. Photo by John Whalen
Mechanical Engineer Lisa Campbell (O41) also attended the ceremony. “I’m very proud of my country and what we do, so I appreciate having the flag up there as a reminder of why we’re here,” she said.
Governor Announces Hiring Partnership with NNS CONTINUED FROM PG 1
In addition to this significant hiring initiative, NNS is retraining employees over the next five years to incorporate new digital shipbuilding technology and is continuing to make capital investments in the company’s facilities and technology infrastructure. “As we continue to transform our business, we look forward to recruiting, training and retaining talented men and women who will help meet our workforce needs now and into the future,” said NNS President Jennifer Boykin. “This effort requires strong community leadership. That’s why we are excited about this partnership with the commonwealth. Working with government, business and educational systems ensures we have the additional resources necessary to continue our investment in our greatest resource: our people.” This initiative will be supported by various state agencies, including Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Virginia Community College System, the Virginia Employment Commission, and the Virginia Office of Veterans and Defense Affairs.
State Champion Welder Headed to NNS Apprentice Michael Reed comes to Newport News Shipbuilding as a district and state welding champion through the SkillsUSA program. The recent Gloucester High School graduate excelled in the welding program at New Horizons Regional Education Centers under the direction of former NNS shipbuilder Ed Dupree. Reed placed 12th in the national welding championship, held in Louisville, Kentucky, last week. Watch a video on MyNNS to learn more about Reed.
