Mulherin Sounds the Shipyard Whistle to Commemorate "Last Shift" On June 30, Matt Mulherin was joined at the Powerhouse by new Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin, representatives from the Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and other shipbuilders for a short ceremony commemorating the end of his last shift as president.

NNS Dedicates 15th Habitat for Humanity House Newport News Shipbuilding joined elected officials and community leaders June 29 to dedicate the 15th house shipyard volunteers have constructed in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg since 2002. The ribbon-cutting welcomed Tanya Johnson and her children—Shane, Sadie and Charles—to their new home. In attendance were State Sen. Mamie Locke; State Del. Marcia Price; Newport News Vice Mayor Tina L. Vick; Newport News City Councilman Bert Bateman; Karen Wilds, executive director, Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority; Janet V. Green, CEO, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg; and Karen Joyner, CEO, Virginia Peninsula Food Bank. “It is so inspiring to have a company like Newport News Shipbuilding not only provide the funds for their 15th Habitat home, but also have their incredible employees actually come out every year to help build the home,” Green said. “We are so grateful for their support... “The idea of having this ceremony and whistle blow is an idea that stemmed from one of our ERGs – the SHIPs Network,” said Boykin. “Ideas from shipbuilders are important, and they make a difference – and this event is proof of that. I’d like to thank Eric Olsen (X51) and the SHIPs team for coming up with such a great idea, and I’d like to thank the Powerhouse team for helping us to make this happen.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

VCS Shipbuilders Tour iDS' Mobile Experience More than 600 shipbuilders in the VirginiaClass Submarine Program got a peek into the future of the shipbuilding industry June 2630, during tours of the company’s integrated Digital Shipbuilding Mobile Experience (MX). The 53-foot trailer, designed for iDS training efforts, spent a week outside the Modular Outfitting Facility (MOF) and Supplemental Modular Outfitting Facility (SMOF). It was the first of many stops planned for the MX inside the yard this year. CONTINUED ON PG 3

...and the positive ripple effects they have made in our communities.”

Before Mulherin sounded the shipyard’s 3:30 p.m. whistle, Boykin presented him with two gifts in honor of his service – a brass ship’s bell with a pulley hand braided by NNS riggers and an engraved steel paperweight, with the number “19” – signifying his term as the 19th president and his 36 years of service; the paperweight was also handcrafted by NNS shipbuilders. Shipbuilders who had a hand in making Mulherin’s gifts said it was an honor. “It was great for us to make the pulley for the bell,” said Curtis Butler (X36). “Making something like this for an outgoing president is something that will always be remembered.” Rigging Apprentice James Woods (X36) added, “I've only been here for a month and a half, so it was exciting to be part of this project. I thought it was cool that they kept the work inside the shipyard instead of outsourcing.” This wasn’t the first presidential gift handcrafted by shipbuilders. Chris Wolford (M53) worked on the engraved paperweight for Mulherin and a similar one that was presented to President Donald Trump when he visited NNS earlier this year. “It feels good to be asked to do something like this,” Wolford said. Bill Bullock (X32), a 43-year NNS employee who also worked on paperweights for both

presidents, said he appreciated Mulherin’s leadership. “He’s been a real fair man. He has treated us well, and he’s helped the yard move forward,” Bullock said. “We wish him the best in retirement and look forward to Ms. Boykin's leadership.” At 3:25 p.m. Master Shipbuilder and Power Plant Operator Ralph Gilley reviewed whistle sounding instructions with Mulherin and promptly at 3:30 p.m., Mulherin sounded the whistle. Prior to the whistle blow, Mulherin thanked everyone for coming. “This is an amazing place. You all do amazing work here and I can’t thank you enough,” he said. “It’s been an incredible ride, and I have loved every minute of it. You’re in great hands – Jennifer will be a wonderful leader.” Watch a highlights video of the ceremony and whistle blow.

Brian Fields, vice president of Integrated Planning and Production Control, spoke on behalf of the shipyard and presented the house keys and a plaque to the Johnson family. The home is about 1,200 square feet with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. “At Newport News Shipbuilding, we pride ourselves on the quality of ships we build, and what you can see here is a quality house,” Fields said. Turning to Johnson, he added, “Building a house is one thing; turning it into a home is something else. Now that’s your job. ...Congratulations.” Johnson works for the Newport News Human Services Department and said she is committed to taking care of her new home after working alongside volunteers for months to build it. “We are truly blessed,” she said while thanking the homebuilders. “There was love behind it. We built this together.” NNS volunteer Jeremy Scicchitano has participated in about 10 Habitat for Humanity projects. He said he is proud to help families experience that “same feeling of connectedness” in the community that he felt when he bought his first home. Watch a highlights video of the ribboncutting ceremony.

New! Raising the Red Flag In the coming weeks, new “Red Flag” badge cards will be handed out that remind and empower shipbuilders to step in, speak up, and take action – even to stop work – for concerns about safety, quality, ethics or other significant issues. This badge replaces the “STOP IT” cards and includes contact information for NNS President Jennifer Boykin. They will be distributed in Take Five meetings and through division leadership. Front and back illustrations of the new badge card are provided on right.

NNS Organizational Changes Announced In a letter sent to employees June 29, Jennifer Boykin announced organizational changes as a result of her transition to president of Newport News Shipbuilding. She also announced changes in the Aircraft Carrier New Construction Division to reflect growth and progress of the company's ship programs. Lucas Hicks was promoted to vice president of John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Carrier Construction, Charles Southall was promoted to vice president of Engineering and Design, and Mike Shawcross, who most recently served as vice president of CVN 79 and CVN 80 (Enterprise) Aircraft Carrier Construction, will lead the Enterprise and CVN 81 programs. Southall will report to Boykin; Hicks and Shawcross will report to Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs. The changes went into effect July 1. VCS Shipbuilders Tour iDS' Mobile Experience (MX) CONTINUED FROM PG 1

Bob Meyer, VCS construction director, said it was important to bring the MX to the VCS campus to allow craftsmen and craftswomen to see the tools the company plans to deploy to improve work life, efficiency and productivity. “I firmly believe the best ideas for how we use these powerful iDS capabilities will come from the shipbuilders on the deckplate building our ships every day,” he said. “The feedback from the VCS craftsmen, foremen, general foremen and construction supervisors has been outstanding. And the energy the iDS team along with some of my own team who have been engaged with iDS projects rubbed off on those attending the presentations. It was a great experience for everyone involved.” The demonstrations allowed shipbuilders to visualize how digital tools such as Visual Work Instructions, Visual Build Management and Augmented Reality might impact the work they do every day. Leaders from the VCS program, including foremen, general foremen, superintendents and construction directors lead the MX tours in conjunction with the iDS team. “It was great to have VCS leaders assist with the tours,” said Linda Carrithers, design engineering manager responsible for MX logistics. “This allowed VCS craftsmen and craftswomen to get a better understanding of how iDS will specifically impact submarine work.”

Machinist Timothy Moore (X43) said the technology will help save time he currently spends reviewing pages of drawings. “Instead of flipping through 96 pages, everything you need is going to be right there in your hands,” he said. “It’s a good step for the future. If we can hold up an iPad and see exactly where something needs to go and who’s supposed to be where at what time, it’s going to be a very good process.” Fellow Machinist Collin Bowden (X43) also looks forward to using the new technology. “It’s got solid potential to make things a lot easier,” he said. Specific dates and locations of MX stops around the shipyard will be communicated in the near future.

June 29, 2017

Dear Shipbuilders, As I transition to president of Newport News Shipbuilding, I am backfilling my previous position as vice president of Engineering and Design. I am also making changes in the Aircraft Carrier New Construction Divisions to reflect growth and progress of our ship programs. The following changes are effective July 1. Charles Southall is being promoted to vice president of Engineering and Design. In this role, he will be responsible for all ship design, planning yard and topside construction, and test engineering. Charles joined NNS in 1988 as an engineer in the Submarine Program and has held several leadership roles, including director of Submarine Engineering. Charles also established our new Columbia-Class Submarine Program Office and most recently served as the company’s chief engineer, where he led engineering efforts across all Navy programs. Charles has the experience, knowledge and technical rigor needed for this position, and I can think of no better successor. Charles will report to me. Mike Shawcross, our current vice president of the CVN 79 and CVN 80 Programs, will be responsible for the CVN 80 and CVN 81 Programs. In this role, he will focus on contracting for CVN 80 construction and future ships, and establishing build plans, material procurement efforts and early construction. This move is critical as we begin to implement our digital shipbuilding transformation. Mike has been a senior leader in the Gerald R. Ford Program since the first ship, CVN 78. His program knowledge, customer relations, and expertise positions us well for aircraft carrier construction today and into the future. Mike will report to Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs. Lucas Hicks is being promoted to vice president of CVN 79 Construction. In this role, he will be responsible for program management, planning and construction for the John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). Lucas is an exceptional leader and has a deep understanding of carrier construction challenges and opportunities. He most recently served as director of Facilities and brings 26 years of shipbuilding experience to his new position. He began his career in Submarine Engineering and has a strong construction background. He has served in leadership positions in the Sealift Conversion Program and new carrier construction, where he was responsible for the construction and integration of CVN 78’s machinery systems and components. Lucas will report to Ken Mahler. Charles, Mike and Lucas will play instrumental roles as we work together to transform our business. They are committed to creating an environment where our shipbuilders can harness their talent, skills and ideas for future success and innovation. Please join me in congratulating and supporting them in their new roles. Additional announcements will be made in the coming weeks regarding the new chief engineer and the new director of Facilities. All the best,

Jennifer Boykin
