NNS Tests Ford’s New AnchorHandling System Newport News Shipbuilding has successfully completed anchor testing on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), bringing the ship closer to its 2016 delivery to the U.S. Navy. Ford’s new anchor system features a lighter anchor and chain, weighing in at half the weight of the previous Nimitz-class carriers’ anchor systems. At 30,000 pounds, Ford’s anchor is significantly lighter than the Nimitz-class anchors, matching the overall lighter weight of the carrier itself. The anchor chain also weighs significantly less than its Nimitz counterpart. The 1,440-foot... CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

NNI Shipbuilders Celebrate a Positive Safety Culture Newport News Industrial shipbuilders working in the Valve and Component Repair Shop held a luncheon on June 26 to celebrate safety successes the crew has had over the past year and to initiate a safety discussion. “This crew takes safety very seriously,” said Operations Superintendent Izaac Pruden. “The employees come to work with a questioning attitude, communicate well and look out for each other on a daily basis. They have built a positive safety culture in the shop that encourages crew members to follow safety guidelines by adhering to procedures, stop when they are unsure of something and alert others when things don’t look right.”

Pruden also spoke about NNI’s Corrective Action Program (CAP). “Our program encourages everyone on the shop floor to submit a condition report documenting any concerns they have — good or bad and submit it,” Pruden said. “Each week the CAP leadership team meets to discuss, track and categorize all reports submitted. I think this system has played a large role in the success of this team.” The team has gone more than 2,400 days without an accident. Pruden said, “I’m proud of this crew and the high-quality work they have performed with zero accidents.”

NNS Tests Ford’s New Anchor-Handling System ...chain consists of links made of high-strength steel, each link weighing about 136 pounds. Newport News shipbuilders recently gathered to test Ford’s anchor windlass system that is used to deploy and retrieve the anchor and chain. Load tests are performed by attaching additional weight to the anchor to simulate both a 180-foot drop and a 360-foot drop. The anchor handling system must be ready to deploy at a moment’s notice in the event of an emergency. “It was through tremendous teamwork across multiple departments that the anchor windlass system was tested satisfactorily on Ford,” said Derek Briggs, the foreman in charge of testing the new anchor’s system. “By testing each system on the ship, we are able to demonstrate to our customer, the U.S. Navy, that the systems perform as designed. Testing on Ford’s anchor windlass system was successful and is a testament to the quality and pride with which our shipbuilders perform their work each day.” Pictured: During a recent visit to the shipyard, Ford’s Ship Sponsor Susan Ford Bales tests out the ship’s cutting-edge anchor-handling system alongside NNS employees Gary Carter (left) and Gary Paden (right). Why is the U.S. Navy Concerned about Piping System Cleanliness? By: Tim Ketten, Propulsion Machinery, SUPSHIPNN

Imagine that the manager of the auto repair shop where your car has just been serviced tells you that his mechanic left dirt and metal shavings inside your engine. He further explains that your car will operate perfectly fine. What questions would go through your mind? These questions should be: will the dirt damage any moving parts, will the metal shavings plug oil paths causing even more damage to moving parts, what will this material do to the performance and longevity of the engine, and do I have confidence in the workmanship of this auto repair shop for future work? The U.S. Navy, as your customer, will ask the same questions when any unauthorized material is discovered in piping systems or components of their ships. The U.S. Navy acknowledges the difficult task shipbuilders face each day to maintain clean piping systems while working within the shipbuilding environment that routinely produces debris detrimental to these systems. Overcoming this challenge is crucial as: • Dirt and debris within a pipe or component may cause harm to our Sailors or cause malfunction of critical ship’s systems. Our Sailors deserve clean air and water. Additionally, the systems you repair need to operate correctly all of the time; especially when the ship is in harm’s way. • Dirt and debris in pipes reduce the system operating efficiency and may cause the need for premature repair of components. We are all aware of the challenges to our nation’s budget. Maintaining clean systems allows them to operate at full capacity for a longer duration without requiring expensive repair. • Recovering from a loss of piping system cleanliness is expensive and delays the ship’s delivery back to the U.S. Navy. Often Engineering does not fully understand how the dirt and debris will affect the operation or performance of a system. Determining the boundary of the problem, the cleanliness recovery actions, and the amount of risk to operate the system can require a large amount of engineering effort and money. I congratulate Newport News Shipbuilding for the recent improvements to your cleanliness program but continued improvements are still necessary. Continue to work with pride, follow your procedures, and know the cleanliness acceptance criteria for the particular system you’re building or repairing. If you have questions, ask your supervision. The U.S. Navy relies on your diligence to build and maintain clean systems at all times to return these vital assets to the Fleet within budget and ready to accomplish their mission.
