NNS Tests Ford’s New AnchorHandling System Newport News Shipbuilding has successfully completed anchor testing on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), bringing the ship closer to its 2016 delivery to the U.S. Navy. NNI Shipbuilders Celebrate a Positive Safety Culture Newport News Industrial shipbuilders working in the Valve and Component Repair Shop held a luncheon on June 26 to celebrate safety successes the crew has had over the past year and to initiate a safety discussion. “This crew takes safety very seriously,” said Operations Superintendent Izaac Pruden. “The employees come to work with a questioning attitude, communicate well and look out for each other on a daily basis. They have built a positive safety culture in the shop that encourages crew members to follow safety guidelines by adhering to procedures, stop when they are unsure of something and alert others when things don’t look right.”

Pruden also spoke about NNI’s Corrective Action Program (CAP). “Our program encourages everyone on the shop floor to submit a condition report documenting any concerns they have — good or bad and submit it,” Pruden said. “Each week the CAP leadership team meets to discuss, track and categorize all reports submitted. I think this system has played a large role in the success of this team.” The team has gone more than 2,400 days without an accident. Pruden said, “I’m proud of this crew and the high-quality work they have performed with zero accidents.”
