MOE Nominations Announced In a letter to shipbuilders July 9, Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin announced that 43 teams and eight individuals have been nominated for the 2014 Model of Excellence (MOE) award in recognition of their extraordinary performance and outstanding contributions to the company. “In these times of tightening defense budgets, I believe that strong performance is critical to our continued success,” Mulherin wrote. “These 424 men and women stand as shining examples for us all. Their strong work ethic, skill, determination and exemplary results are the attributes that will help lead our company to a successful future.” Mulherin plans to announce the 2014 MOE award winners in the near future. The winners will be recognized at a special ceremony in September.

VA Secretary of Education Tours The Apprentice School Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton visited The Apprentice School July 9 for a tour of the new facility. Danny Hunley, vice president of Operations, and Everett Jordan, The Apprentice School’s Education director, led the tour of the 90,000-square-foot facility, which includes eight computer labs, two video teleconferencing classrooms, a physics lab and a 600-seat gymnasium. Holton was also joined by Virginia Deputy Secretary of Education Dietra Trent, Virginia Director of STEM Megan Healy and two summer interns working in

Holton’s office. During the tour, Holton visited several classrooms to receive feedback from apprentices. “I’m so excited to see the phenomenal work going on at The Apprentice School and the level of commitment shown to the employees and this community,” Holton said. “We hope to take these lessons learned to our employers and our constituents across the Commonwealth.” Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com to read the entire news release.

Shipbuilders Recognized for Safety Contributions Sixteen X31 shipbuilders were recently recognized for keeping their work area safe. The crew is responsible for working on Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN 78) electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS). “This crew takes safety very seriously,” said Foreman Jason House. “They look out for each other, pay close attention to detail, follow R.E.C. (recognize, evaluate and control) guidelines, and take turns reading safety message in our daily ‘Take 5’ crew talks.” House believes that full participation in safety activities has played a key role in the team’s success.

Career Development Expo The Career Development Expo on July 18 will feature: informational booths, informational workshops that include sessions on career development process, self-awareness assessments, resumes and interviewing techniques, networking, mentoring, job family and competitive promotions, job application process, and many others. There will also be three sessions to chat with a panel of senior Newport News Shipbuilding leaders about career development concepts, philosophies and challenges. View the flier on Yardnet.

“Everyone participates, which keeps everyone engaged, which leads to better relationships with one another, which ultimately leads to a safer environment,” he said. “The crew has also formed a ‘family-like’ atmosphere. We look out for each other like any family would and no one person is treated more important than the next.” The crew has been accident-free for the past two years. “This entire crew has beaten the odds statistically,” House said. “The entire crew has been at the shipyard for two-and-a-half or less years. I’m extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and am looking forward to continued success.”

The Management Development Center hosted an open house June 25 -26 to help expand understanding of the Common integrated Work Package (CiWP) project. The objective of the CiWP effort is to develop and implement tools and processes that will streamline work instructions, work packages, drawings, procedures and other content, and to deliver them consistently in an easy-to-use format to the deckplate. “Over the next several years, CiWP will impact many engineering, planning, and production management processes across all product lines, with the goal of improving productivity across the shipyard,” said Engineering Director and CiWP Lead Tim Sweitzer. More than 400 NNS leaders attended the event and discussed how to effectively develop and deploy elements of the CiWP project. The event also showcased newer technologies and applications that will decrease the time spent researching information required to do the work assigned. “The level of engagement and enthusiasm was phenomenal,” said Sweitzer. “That’s what we’ll need for an effort as big and broad as CiWP to be successful.” Foreman Chris Spanos (X82) said, “It’s nice to be involved in a project working from the deckplate backwards. It’s more typical to first see a project as it is being rolled out; however, the CiWP team has worked closely with us, and then acts on our behalf bringing ideas and solutions that we produced together back to engineering, IT, planning, and whoever else necessary.” Other CiWP events are being planned for later this year. CiWP attendees learn about tools and processes that will streamline work instructions, work packages, drawings, procedures and other content during the CiWP Open House in June. Photo by John Whalen

Know the Rules to Keep Ship Systems Clean To ensure that ships will operate for decades as designed, shipbuilders must demonstrate extreme care during all aspects of fabrication, assembly and testing to ensure that a wrong material does not end up in the critical systems. E86 procedure owner Dave Cowley said, “New materials being used on CVN 78 and VCS make for a more capable warship, but it also require us to be more diligent. The requirements are captured in our cleanliness procedures used by engineering, trades and test personnel daily.” Foreign and detrimental materials can degrade the strength of steels or alloys, either directly or when combined with other factors. Some detrimental materials are easy to identify and include chemicals such

as sulfur, phosphorous, cadmium or arsenic. Unfortunately, many are found throughout the shipyard including lubricants used in fabrication, marking materials, paints and welding, soldering, or brazing flux. Cleanliness procedures should always be followed to verify the correct material and processes are used to establish the required cleanliness grades. E86 procedure owner Mark Ronquillo added, “We work with our engineering, trades and test personnel every day to ensure they know and execute our procedures. Their vast knowledge and skill helps us build clean to meet first time quality.”

HII Unveils Plan to Offer On-Site Family Health Centers On July 9, HII announced that it will offer on-site family healthcare centers exclusively designed for its Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News Shipbuilding division employees and their families. The centers, scheduled to open in 2015, will offer a variety of services, including primary care, an onsite pharmacy and laboratory services.

Safety Task Team Presents VCS Crew with Safety and Cleanliness Award The Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Safety Task Team has instituted a new “Module of Excellence” award to recognize cleanliness, line control and safety oversight on modules under construction within the VCS Program. Award criteria and a scorecard developed by the Safety Task Team, will be used to determine a winner

each month. “The first winner of the ‘Module of Excellence’ award was presented to the Washington (SSN 787) Weapons Module on June 30,” said Bob Meyer, VCS Construction/Facilities director. “The crew was presented with a banner that will hang

in their work area until the next award is presented in July. This is a continued VCS emphasis on improved safety in the work sites by improving workplace cleanliness.” The winning crew working on Washington’s (SSN 787) Weapons Module was awarded the “Module of Excellence” banner on June 30. “The establishment of these family health centers is another investment in our employees and an important step toward building a culture of health and wellness across our company,” said Bill Ermatinger, HII corporate vice president and chief human resources officer. “These health centers will offer personalized care with a focus on prevention and health maintenance along with full patient confidentiality and privacy.” The health centers, which will be operated by a third-party vendor, will be located near the shipyards to provide employees and their families with a convenient and very affordable healthcare option. The services will be available to non-represented employees and their dependents who are covered by the Anthem consumer-driven or preferred-provider plans. Read a letter sent to employees from Ermatinger regarding the health centers or visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com to read the entire news release.

Employees Celebrate at Harbor Park More than 500 employees, family and friends of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Engineering and Design (E&D) Division tailgated and cheered on the Norfolk Tides during their double-header July 12. Jennifer Boykin, vice president of E&D, who threw out the first pitch of the first game said, “We have a very engaged and dedicated team committed to the mission of the shipyard and the Navy who sail our great ships. This event has been an awesome way to celebrate our employees, their families and friends.” The effort was organized by several volunteers, including Stacey Hammonds (E44), a designer on the Gerald R. Ford’s Automation and

Networks systems. “We were amazed at how many people purchased their own tickets to spend a night with their coworkers,” said Hammonds. “It just demonstrates the camaraderie across our Division, which translates to great team work back in the office.”
