American Heart Walk Team Leaders Needed Interested in being a team leader for this year’s American Heart Walk? Newport News Shipbuilding is looking for dynamic leaders to lead NNS teams in both the Peninsula and Southside Heart Walk events. The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s (AHA) premiere event for raising funds to save lives from this country’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers - heart disease and stroke. Designed to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living, the Heart Walk creates an environment that’s fun and rewarding for the entire family. NNS Named a Fit-Friendly Worksite Newport News Shipbuilding was recently recognized as a gold Fit-Friendly worksite by the American Heart Association (AHA). The award recognizes company initiatives that encourage improved employee health awareness. To receive gold Fit-Friendly status, companies must show that they are taking steps to improve the health of their employees through nutritional changes and physical activity support. HII, AMSEC and Ingalls also receive Fit-Friendly awards. HII and AMSEC received gold status and Ingalls was awarded platinum status. Platinum awards are given to companies that meet all the gold criteria and can also show a positive return on investment due to their health-conscious changes. “We are honored to receive this award from the American Heart Association,” said Bill Ermatinger, HII corporate vice president and chief human resources officer. “We are glad that HII, Newport News, AMSEC and Ingalls are all taking steps to improve employee health. Together, we can learn from one another’s initiatives and have a healthier workforce overall.” Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for additional information. How Does Your Job Affect the “Build Clean” Process? Piping systems cleanliness is a team effort. Engineering, planning, trades, logistics and inspection are all part of the piping systems value stream team, but the job to maintain system cleanliness belongs to every shipbuilder. “The work you do affects others ability to build and maintain system cleanliness throughout construction,” said Loria Mooneyham. “We must all work together to provide a safe and quality ship to our customer and the ship’s crew.” During the construction process, all working documents should be formulated with piping systems cleanliness in mind. Watch the Pipe and Components Cleanliness Awareness video and hear testimonials from fellow shipyard employees on the Build Clean Yardnet website.
