Gerald R. Ford Officially Joins the Navy's Fleet The U.S. Navy commissioned Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) in front of a crowd of more than 10,000 at Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday, July 22. President Donald J. Trump – who landed in Marine One on Ford's flight deck for the ceremony – was joined by Navy, federal and state officials, as well as employees of Newport News Shipbuilding, for the commissioning of the most technologically advanced aircraft carrier in the world. "American hands and American steel have constructed a 100,000-ton message to the world," Trump said. "Wherever this vessel cuts through the horizon, our allies will rest easy and our enemies will shake with fear because everyone... CONTINUED ON PG 2

...will know that America is coming and America is coming strong." Former NNS President Matt Mulherin also spoke during the ceremony, representing the thousands of shipbuilders who have worked on the vessel since construction began more than a decade ago. "Being a shipbuilder isn't easy work – and it's not for everyone. Yet, I am proud to say that we have 20,000 of America's finest shipbuilders right across the water in Newport News. These women and men proudly build the aircraft carriers and submarines that serve and protect our great nation," he said. "They come to work each day to do their best, and to be their best." Mulherin said building Ford was "an exciting journey." "I can confidently say that this aircraft carrier represents the very best of American manufacturing, innovation and experience," he said.

Susan Ford Bales – the ship's sponsor, an honorary shipbuilder and President Gerald R. Ford's daughter – gave the traditional command to "man our ship and bring her to life," prompting Ford sailors to run up the brows and man the rails as the band played "Anchors Aweigh." CVN 78 is the lead ship of the Ford-class, the newest class of aircraft carriers in more than 40 years. It marks the beginning of the phased replacement of Nimitz-class carriers. NNS Presents Ford's Crew with Handcrafted Ship's Wheel Ahead of Commissioning Ceremony Newport News Shipbuilding delivered Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) to the U.S. Navy in late May, but one final – and symbolic – touch was presented to the ship at an event prior to the commissioning ceremony. Rolf Bartschi, former vice president of Ford Carrier Construction, presented the ship's commanding officer, Capt. Richard McCormack, with a custom-made ship's wheel. It's a tradition for NNS to present a handcrafted wheel to the crew of a newly constructed aircraft carrier to commemorate the partnership between the Navy and shipbuilders. "On behalf of the shipbuilders of Newport News Shipbuilding, congratulations on this historic milestone in the life of the USS Gerald R. Ford," Bartschi told McCormack. "It's been our honor to work side by side with you and your crew, and

with our ship's sponsor Susan Ford Bales, to bring this magnificent ship to life." The wooden portion of the wheel was handcrafted by shipbuilders in the Pattern Shop. Shipbuilders in E24 and in the Machine Shop designed and machined the stainless steel hub in the center, which features the Ford's compass logo and the words "USS Gerald R. Ford, Integrity at the Helm." The stainless steel hub was created using the most advanced 3-D metal printing process to date. "I think it's fitting that the ship's motto – integrity at the helm – is actually at the helm of Ford," said Pattern Shop Supervisor Zachary Hudgins. "It is incredible to think that the spokes of the wheel will be what steers all 100,000 tons of diplomacy." The wheel can be used for display, but it is

also functional and can be installed and used in the bridge to steer the ship. Janelle Wilson (M71) said it was rewarding to take part in building Ford's wheel. "It just feels good to know that this shop helped produce an iconic part of the ship," she said.

Shipbuilders Think Outside the Box to Recycle and Reuse Michele Affolter (O46) and her team in the Material Recycling Facility (MRF) are always looking for ways to recycle and reuse. "A few years ago we got about 300 blue plastic drums that had aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) in them. Because we can't wash them out, we were looking for something to do with them besides send them to the landfill," Affolter said. "We ended up cutting off the tops and using them throughout the shipyard for recycling cans and plastic bottles." The latest shipments of AFFF have arrived in 300-gallon plastic totes enclosed in aluminum baskets. Affolter immediately considered reuse potential, and the MRF team has repurposed and distributed across the shipyard more than 100 of the baskets to be used as cardboard recycling bins. "The metal baskets are working great and should hold up better than the wood boxes that we are currently using," she said. The MRF expects to receive additional AFFF totes with metal cages, so contact

EAP Counselors Offer Free Assistance to NNS Employees and Families For Heather Smith (X44/K74), counseling was more than help, it was an avenue to understand her experience with grief. In 2010, Smith lost her mother to suicide. She had always been an advocate for therapy, so when she needed it most, she turned to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). “I knew my healing process came with talking about my mother’s death, so meeting with a counselor offered a safe place to share my feelings,” Smith said.

“Utilizing EAP gave me a chance to start healing in a constructive manner rather than destructive.”

confidential counselors can assist with marital and family issues, stress and anxiety, grief, work pressures and more.

Through EAP, all employees and dependents can receive up to eight free counseling sessions per year per issue, and licensed counselors are available at the HII Family Health Center or in town.

Want to speak to someone? Call the counselors at the health center or contact EAP 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-855-400-9185 to get started.

“Speak up if you need help and know that you are not alone,” Smith said. Licensed,

AROUND THE YARD VCS Program on Track to Have Safest Year Ever he Virginia-Class Submarine Program at T Newport News Shipbuilding is on track to have its safest year ever – for the second time in two years.

NNS to Kickoff School Tools Drive Newport News Shipbuilding's 2017 "School Tools Drive" box collection will run Aug. 7-18. To make giving easier, employees can shop online at YouGiveGoods starting July 31. Desired donations include: • Notebooks and notebook paper • Report covers • No. 2 pencils, erasers, pens, markers, highlighters, colored pencils and crayons • Glue/glue sticks, child-safe scissors, compasses and protractors • Backpacks Don't forget to take advantage of Virginia's sales tax holiday, Aug. 4-6, during which qualified school supplies, clothing and footwear will not be subject to sales tax. Countless students across our area have benefited from school supplies donated by shipbuilders in past years. The same will be true this year with your help.

In a safety and engagement video message to VCS shipbuilders, Matt Needy, vice president for the Virginia-class Submarine Program and Fleet Services Division, said 2016 had been the safest year in the history of the program. And the first half of 2017 trended even safer, with 30 percent fewer injuries reported than at the same point last year. The program has experienced twice as many accident-free weeks in 2017. "Delivering freedom is what we have the privilege to do every day. To make this possible and support the country's need for more submarines, we must look for ways to improve our safety, quality, cost and schedule performance every day," Needy said. "Your ideas and focused improvement actions will allow us to reach our full potential as a team." Watch the video on MyNNS and the NNS to Go app.

Ron Murray, vice president of Quality, met with Taylor on July 18 to present him with the ethics award. "We are grateful that our shipbuilders care so deeply about the work they do and about each other," Murray said. "Delbert is a wonderful example and truly deserving of this honor. His quick thinking and action made all the difference that day." Want to nominate a fellow employee? Contact Catrina Hagwood (O18) at 688-1907
